Ball & Roller Bearings - Theory, Design & Application 3e (Hardcover, 3rd Edition): J. Brandlein Ball & Roller Bearings - Theory, Design & Application 3e (Hardcover, 3rd Edition)
J. Brandlein
R7,932 Discovery Miles 79 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is the third edition of the standard work for all engineers concerned with rolling bearings — in design and development; in production and operation; in maintenance and repair; in purchasing and materials management. Fully revised, features new to this edition include:

  • coverage of the new ‘adjusted life’ calculation, which takes into account the endurance strength of rolling bearings in relation to factors such as the cleanliness of the lubricant and the design of the bearing housing using the flow of force
  • expanded chapter on lubrication
The information in this book will help bearing engineers make real-life improvements to the capacity and operational reliability of bearings in vehicles, machines, equipment and plants, saving on both time and costs. This book is an essential reference to the fundamental correlations of bearing engineering, and to all aspects of bearing design and technology.

Martin Oberlack, Joachim Peinke, Alessandro Talamelli, Luciano Castillo, Michael Hoelling
R5,178 Discovery Miles 51 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This fourth issue on "progress in turbulence" is based on the fourth ITI conference (ITI interdisciplinary turbulence initiative), which took place in Bertinoro, North Italy. Leading researchers from the engineering and physical sciences presented latest results in turbulence research. Basic as well as applied research is driven by the rather notorious difficult and essentially unsolved problem of turbulence. In this collection of contributions clear progress can be seen in different aspects, ranging from new quality of numerical simulations to new concepts of experimental investigations and new theoretical developments. The importance of turbulence is shown for a wide range of applications including: combustion, energy, flow control, urban flows, are few examples found in this volume. A motivation was to bring fundamentals of turbulence in connection with renewable energy. This lead us to add a special topic relevant to the impact of turbulence on the wind energy conversion. The structure of the present book is as such that contributions have been bundled according to covering topics i.e. I Basic Turbulence Aspects, II Particle Laden Flows, III Modeling and Simulations, IV, Experimental Methods, V Special Flows, VI Atmospheric Boundary Layer, VII Boundary Layer, VIII Wind Energy and IX Convection. This book is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Tim Nickels. Shortly after giving an invited lecture at the 4th ITI conference, the turbulence community lost a world-class scientist, a friend and devoted family man.

Hyperbolic Conservation Laws in Continuum Physics (Hardcover, 4th ed. 2016): Constantine M. Dafermos Hyperbolic Conservation Laws in Continuum Physics (Hardcover, 4th ed. 2016)
Constantine M. Dafermos
R6,004 Discovery Miles 60 040 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a masterly exposition and an encyclopedic presentation of the theory of hyperbolic conservation laws. It illustrates the essential role of continuum thermodynamics in providing motivation and direction for the development of the mathematical theory while also serving as the principal source of applications. The reader is expected to have a certain mathematical sophistication and to be familiar with (at least) the rudiments of analysis and the qualitative theory of partial differential equations, whereas prior exposure to continuum physics is not required. The target group of readers would consist of (a) experts in the mathematical theory of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws who wish to learn about the connection with classical physics; (b) specialists in continuum mechanics who may need analytical tools; (c) experts in numerical analysis who wish to learn the underlying mathematical theory; and (d) analysts and graduate students who seek introduction to the theory of hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. This new edition places increased emphasis on hyperbolic systems of balance laws with dissipative source, modeling relaxation phenomena. It also presents an account of recent developments on the Euler equations of compressible gas dynamics. Furthermore, the presentation of a number of topics in the previous edition has been revised, expanded and brought up to date, and has been enriched with new applications to elasticity and differential geometry. The bibliography, also expanded and updated, now comprises close to two thousand titles. From the reviews of the 3rd edition: "This is the third edition of the famous book by C.M. Dafermos. His masterly written book is, surely, the most complete exposition in the subject." Evgeniy Panov, Zentralblatt MATH "A monumental book encompassing all aspects of the mathematical theory of hyperbolic conservation laws, widely recognized as the "Bible" on the subject." Philippe G. LeFloch, Math. Reviews

Advances in Computational Multibody Systems (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Jorge A.C. Ambrosio Advances in Computational Multibody Systems (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Jorge A.C. Ambrosio
R4,212 Discovery Miles 42 120 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Among all the fields in solid mechanics the methodologies associated to multibody dynamics are probably those that provide a better framework to aggregate different disciplines. This idea is clearly reflected in the multidisciplinary applications in biomechanics that use multibody dynamics to describe the motion of the biological entities, or in finite elements where the multibody dynamics provides powerful tools to describe large motion and kinematic restrictions between system components, or in system control for which multibody dynamics are the prime form of describing the systems under analysis, or even in applications with fluid-structures interaction or aeroelasticity. This book contains revised and enlarged versions of selected communications presented at the ECCOMAS Thematic Conference in Multibody Dynamics 2003 that took place in Lisbon, Portugal, which have been enhanced in their self-containment and tutorial aspects by the authors. The result is a comprehensive text that constitutes a valuable reference for researchers and design engineers and helps to appraise the potential of application of multibody dynamics to a wide range of scientific and engineering areas of relevance.

International Symposium on History of Machines and MechanismsProceedings HMM 2000 (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Marco Ceccarelli International Symposium on History of Machines and MechanismsProceedings HMM 2000 (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Marco Ceccarelli
R5,358 Discovery Miles 53 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The International Symposium on History of Machines and Mechanisms is a new initiative to promote explicitly researches and publications in the field of the History of TMM (Theory of Machines and Mechanisms). It was held at the University of Cassino, Italy, from 11 to 13 May 2000. The Symposium was devoted mainly to the technical aspects of historical developments and therefore it has been addressed mainly to the IFToMM Community. In fact, most the authors of the contributed papers are experts in TMM and related topics. This has been, indeed, a challenge: convincing technical experts to go further in-depth into the background of their topics of expertise. We have received a very positive response, as can be seen by the fact that these Proceedings contain contributions by authors from all around the world. We received about 50 papers, and after review about 40 papers were accepted for both presentation and publishing in the Proceedings. This means also that the History of TMM is of interest everywhere and, indeed, an in-depth knowledge of the past can be of great help in working on the present and in shaping the future with new ideas. I believe that a reader will take advantage of the papers in these Proceedings with further satisfaction and motivation for her or his work (historical or not). These papers cover the wide field of the History of Mechanical Engineering and particularly the History of TMM.

Simulation and Experiments of Material-Oriented Ultra-Precision Machining (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Junjie Zhang, Bing Guo,... Simulation and Experiments of Material-Oriented Ultra-Precision Machining (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Junjie Zhang, Bing Guo, Jianguo Zhang
R2,686 Discovery Miles 26 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Ultra-precision machining is a promising solution for achieving excellent machined surface quality and sophisticated micro/nano-structures that influence the applications of components and devices. Further, given the ultrathin layer of material removed, it is a highly coupled process between cutting tool and material. In this book, scientists in the fields of mechanical engineering and materials science from China, Ukraine, Japan, Singapore present their latest research findings regarding the simulation and experiment of material-oriented ultra-precision machining. Covering various machining methods (cutting, grinding, polishing, ion beam and laser machining) and materials (metal, semiconductor and hard-brittle ceramics), it mainly focuses on the evaluation of the fundamental mechanisms and their implementation in processing optimization for different materials. It is of significant theoretical and practical value for guiding the fabrication of ultra-smooth and functional surfaces using ultra-precision machining.

Elastic Multibody Dynamics - A Direct Ritz Approach (Hardcover, 2008 ed.): Hartmut Bremer Elastic Multibody Dynamics - A Direct Ritz Approach (Hardcover, 2008 ed.)
Hartmut Bremer
R4,259 Discovery Miles 42 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

1. Background This textbook is an introduction to and exploration of a number of core topics in the ?eld of applied mechanics. Mechanics, in both its theoretical and applied contexts, is, like all scienti?c endeavors, a human construct. It re?ects the personalities, thoughts, errors, and successes of its creators. We therefore provide some personal information about each of these individuals when their names arise for the ?rst time in this book. This should enable the reader to piece together a cultural-historical picture of the ?eld s origins and development. This does not mean that we are writing history. Nevertheless, some remarks putting individuals and ideas in context are necessary in order to make clear what we are speaking about - and what we are not speaking about. At the end of the 19th century, technical universities were established eve- where in Europe in an almost euphoric manner. But the practice of technical mechanics itself, as one of the basics of technical development, was in a desolate state, due largely to the refusal of its practitioners to recognize the in?uence of kinetics on motion. They were correct to the extend that then current mechanical systems moved with small velocities where kinetics does not play a signi?cant role. But they had failed to keep up with developments in the science underlying their craft and were unable to keep pace with the speeds of such systems as the steam engine.

R7,812 Discovery Miles 78 120 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume presents the Proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Vibration Problems, 2011, Prague, Czech Republic. ICOVP 2011 brings together again scientists from different backgrounds who are actively working on vibration-related problems of engineering both in theoretical and applied fields, thus facilitating a lively exchange of ideas, methods and results between the many different research areas. The aim is that reciprocal intellectual fertilization will take place and ensure a broad interdisciplinary research field. The topics, indeed, cover a wide variety of vibration-related subjects, from wave problems in solid mechanics to vibration problems related to biomechanics. The first ICOVP conference was held in 1990 at A.C. College, Jalpaiguri, India, under the co-chairmanship of Professor M.M. Banerjee and Professor P. Biswas. Since then it has been held every 2 years at various venues across the World.

Machine Tools for High Performance Machining (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Norberto Lopez de Lacalle, Aitzol Lamikiz Mentxaka Machine Tools for High Performance Machining (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Norberto Lopez de Lacalle, Aitzol Lamikiz Mentxaka
R4,917 Discovery Miles 49 170 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Machine tools are the main production factor for many industrial applications, in important sectors such as the automotive and aeronautical industry, precision parts, human implants, and mechanical construction. Recent developments in new motion devices and numerical control have lead to considerable technological improvements in machine tools. The use of five-axis machining centres has also spread, resulting in reductions in set-up and lead times. As a consequence, feed rates, cutting speed and chip section increased, whilst accuracy and precision have improved as well. Additionally, new cutting tools have been developed, combining tough substrates, optimal geometries and wear resistant coatings. Today s machines and machining processes are clearly very different to those of the past.

Machine Tools for High Performance Machining describes in depth several aspects of machine structures, machine elements and control, and application. The basics, models and functions of each aspect are explained by experts from both academia and industry. Postgraduates, researchers and end users will all find this book an essential reference.

Rotors: Stress Analysis and Design (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Vincenzo Vullo, Francesco Vivio Rotors: Stress Analysis and Design (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Vincenzo Vullo, Francesco Vivio
R5,897 R4,765 Discovery Miles 47 650 Save R1,132 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Stress and strain analysis of rotors subjected to surface and body loads, as well as to thermal loads deriving from temperature variation along the radius, constitutes a classic subject of machine design. Nevertheless attention is limited to rotor profiles for which governing equations are solvable in closed form. Furthermore very few actual engineering issues may relate to structures for which stress and strain analysis in the linear elastic field and, even more, under non-linear conditions (i.e. plastic or viscoelastic conditions) produces equations to be solved in closed form. Moreover, when a product is still in its design stage, an analytical formulation with closed-form solution is of course simpler and more versatile than numerical methods, and it allows to quickly define a general configuration, which may then be fine-tuned using such numerical methods.
In this view, all subjects are based on analytical-methodological approach, and some new solutions in closed form are presented. The analytical formulation of problems is always carried out considering actual engineering applications. Moreover, in order to make the use of analytical models even more friendly at the product design stage, a function is introduced whereby it is possible to define a fourfold infinity of disk profiles, solid or annular, concave or convex, converging or diverging. Such subjects, even derived from scientific authors contributions, are always aimed at designing rotors at the concept stage, i.e. in what precedes detailed design. Among the many contributions, a special mention is due for the following: linear elastic analysis of conical disks and disks with variable profile along its radius according to a power of a linear function, also subjected to thermal load and with variable density; analysis of a variable-profile disk subjected to centrifugal load beyond the material's yield point, introducing the completely general law expressed by a an n-grade polynomial; linear elastic analysis of hyperbolic disk, subjected to thermal load along its radius; linear elastic analysis of a variable-thickness disk according to a power of a linear function, subjected to angular acceleration; etc."

Handbook of Viscoelastic Vibration Damping (Hardcover): D.I.G. Jones Handbook of Viscoelastic Vibration Damping (Hardcover)
D.I.G. Jones
R5,048 Discovery Miles 50 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Viscoelastic damping is becoming widely applied for vibration and noise control in various industries, the most notable examples being aerospace, automotive, computer peripherals and propulsion. A recent review of the literature shows that many engineers are still applying the technology without having a good understanding of the basic underlying principles or the means of describing and measuring the damping parameters.

The comprehensive book introduces simple and effective approaches for describing the damping related properties of viscoelastic materials, with emphasis on the effects of frequency and temperature, and proceeds to illustrate simple techniques for measuring the desired properties and for selecting and applying the materials. In all cases, the need for simplicity in practical applications is emphasized.

Particular topics addressed in some detail include:

  • the complex modulus model of viscoelastic behaviour
  • effects of frequency and temperature on stiffness and damping of viscoelastic materials
  • combination of frequency and temperature into a single variable
  • analysis and evaluation of the quality of available test data by means of the Wicket Plot
  • simple means of meauring stiffness and damping of viscoelastic materials
  • simple approaches for design of treatments for practical structural applications
Practical examples will illustrate the approaches taken. The technical level is as simple as can be achieved without losing clarity, in order that newcomers to the technology can quickly learn the essentials and apply viscoelastic damping in their workplace. This is particularly a handbook for practising eingeers confronted daily by vibration problems, who are nevertheless beginners in the specific area of viscoelastic damping.

Tandem Cold Metal Rolling Mill Control - Using Practical Advanced Methods (Hardcover, 2011): John Pittner, Marwan A. Simaan Tandem Cold Metal Rolling Mill Control - Using Practical Advanced Methods (Hardcover, 2011)
John Pittner, Marwan A. Simaan
R4,808 Discovery Miles 48 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book deals with a novel and practical advanced method for control of tandem cold metal rolling processes based on the emerging state-dependent Riccati equation technique. After a short history of tandem cold rolling, various types of cold rolling processes are described. A basic mathematical model of the process is discussed, and the diverse conventional control methods are compared. A detailed treatment of the theoretical and practical aspects of the state-dependent algebraic Riccati equation technique is given, with specific details of the new procedure described and results of simulations performed to verify the control model and overall system performance with the new controller coupled to the process model included. These results and data derived from actual operating mills are compared showing the improvements in performance using the new method. Material is included which shows how the new technique can be extended to the control of a broad range of large-scale complex nonlinear processes.

Peter Eberhard
R4,057 Discovery Miles 40 570 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The investigation of multiscale problems in multibody system contacts is a most interesting and timely topic which has been the subject of intensive research for more than one decade. While many questions have been answered and the mechanically sound description and simulation is increasingly applied in practical engineering problems, this IUTAM Symposium facilitated discussions between researchers active in the field and enabled us to review the state-of-the-art and to identify for the years to come the hot topics which require further efforts.

It was especially useful to bring together scientists from closely related but traditionally distinct fields such as multibody system contact, molecular dynamics, finite element contact, collision detection or the mathematics of unilateral contact. It is observed that the once clear boundaries between these fields are blurring and an exchange of ideas will accelerate the development with mutual benefits.

Multiscale problems occur very naturally in contact mechanics. Typically the contact forces and stresses are very high and they are transmitted within a very short period of time. This leads to questions, e.g. how the slow rigid body motion and the fast motion changes can be considered simultaneously or how interface effects couple to wave propagation and the large-scale motion.

The purpose of the symposium was be to provide a basis for discussion and exchange of new concepts and ideas to scientists from all over Europe and the world. This proceedings volume summarizes contributions of many authors active in the field and gives insight in very different areas of this fascinating research.

Viscosity of Liquids - Theory, Estimation, Experiment, and Data (Hardcover, 2007 ed.): Dabir S. Viswanath, Tushar K. Ghosh,... Viscosity of Liquids - Theory, Estimation, Experiment, and Data (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Dabir S. Viswanath, Tushar K. Ghosh, Dasika. H. L. Prasad, Nidamarty V. K. Dutt, Kalipatnapu Y Rani
R5,268 Discovery Miles 52 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The need for properties is ever increasing to make processes more economical. A good survey of the viscosity data, its critical evaluation and correlation would help design engineers, scientists and technologists in their areas of interest. This type of work assumes more importance as the amount of experimental work in collection and correlation of properties such as viscosity, thermal conductivity, heat capacities, etc has reduced drastically both at the industry, universities, and national laboratories. One of the c o-authors, Professor Viswanath, co-authored a book jointly with Dr. Natarajan Data Book on the Viscosity of Liquids in 1989 which mainly presented collected and evaluated liquid viscosity data from the literature. Although it is one of its kinds in the field, Prof. Viswanath recognized that the design engineers, scientists and technologists should have a better understanding of theories, experimental procedures, and operational aspects of viscometers. Also, rarely the data are readily available at the conditions that are necessary for design of the equipment or for other calculations. Therefore, the data must be interpolated or extrapolated using the existing literature data and using appropriate correlations or models. We have tried to address these issues in this book."
