Molecular and Nano Electronics: Analysis, Design and Simulation, Volume 17 (Hardcover): Jorge M. Seminario Molecular and Nano Electronics: Analysis, Design and Simulation, Volume 17 (Hardcover)
Jorge M. Seminario
R4,718 Discovery Miles 47 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The aim of Molecular and Nano Electronics: Analysis, Design and Simulation is to draw together contributions from some of the most active researchers in this new field in order to illustrate a theory guided-approach to the design of molecular and nano-electronics. The field of molecular and nano-electronics has driven solutions for a post microelectronics era, where microelectronics dominate through the use of silicon as the preferred material and photo-lithography as the fabrication technique to build binary devices (transistors). The construction of such devices yields gates that are able to perform Boolean operations and can be combined with computational systems, capable of storing, processing, and transmitting digital signals encoded as electron currents and charges. Since the invention of the integrated circuits, microelectronics has reached increasing performances by decreasing strategically the size of its devices and systems, an approach known as scaling-down, which simultaneously allow the devices to operate at higher speeds.
* Provides a theory-guided approach to the design of molecular and nano-electronics
* Includes solutions for researchers working in this area
* Contributions from some of the most active researchers in the field of nano-electronics

Numerical Methods for Metamaterial Design (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Kenneth Diest Numerical Methods for Metamaterial Design (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Kenneth Diest
R4,941 Discovery Miles 49 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book describes a relatively new approach for the design of electromagnetic metamaterials. Numerical optimization routines are combined with electromagnetic simulations to tailor the broadband optical properties of a metamaterial to have predetermined responses at predetermined wavelengths. After a review of both the major efforts within the field of metamaterials and the field of mathematical optimization, chapters covering both gradient-based and derivative-free design methods are considered. Selected topics including surrogate-base optimization, adaptive mesh search, and genetic algorithms are shown to be effective, gradient-free optimization strategies. Additionally, new techniques for representing dielectric distributions in two dimensions, including level sets, are demonstrated as effective methods for gradient-based optimization. Each chapter begins with a rigorous review of the optimization strategy used, and is followed by numerous examples that combine the strategy with either electromagnetic simulations or analytical solutions of the scattering problem. Throughout the text, we address the strengths and limitations of each method, as well as which numerical methods are best suited for different types of metamaterial designs. This book is intended to provide a detailed enough treatment of the mathematical methods used, along with sufficient examples and additional references, that senior level undergraduates or graduate students who are new to the fields of plasmonics, metamaterials, or optimization methods; have an understanding of which approaches are best-suited for their work and how to implement the methods themselves.

Metasurface Electromagnetics - The Cagniard-DeHoop time-domain approach (Hardcover): Martin Stumpf Metasurface Electromagnetics - The Cagniard-DeHoop time-domain approach (Hardcover)
Martin Stumpf
R3,624 R3,267 Discovery Miles 32 670 Save R357 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book is entirely dedicated to the exploration of time-domain electromagnetic fields in the presence of thin, high contrast sheets, with an emphasis on metasurfaces combining magnetic and dielectric properties. Since the number of problems that are amenable to exact solutions in terms of analytic functions is limited, the book's analysis is not restricted to analytical methods only, attention is paid to the development of computational and approximate techniques too. All the solution methodologies presented in the book heavily rely on the Cagniard-DeHoop technique. Regrettably, perhaps because of its origins in seismology, this powerful mathematical tool is still not fully appreciated in the electromagnetics and antenna community. It is hoped that this book will demonstrate the truly broad applicability of the Cagniard-DeHoop technique to achieving both analytical and numerical time-domain solutions. The book is for advanced researchers in computational electromagnetics and those looking for new approaches to modelling of metasurfaces. The book also includes a foreword from Professor Adrianus T. de Hoop, the originator of the Cagniard-DeHoop technique, who ingeniously simplified a joint transform initially put forward by the French geophysicist Cagniard.

Pierre Lambert
R4,377 Discovery Miles 43 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Capillary Forces in Microassembly discusses the use of capillary forces as a gripping principle in microscale assembly. Clearly written and well-organized, this text brings together physical concepts at the microscale with practical applications in micromanipulation. Throughout this work, the reader will find a review of the existing gripping principles, elements to model capillary forces as well as descriptions of the simulation and experimental test bench developed to study the design parameters. Using well-known concepts from surface science (such as surface tension, capillary effects, wettability, and contact angles) as inputs to mechanical models, the amount of effort required to handle micro-components is then predicted.

Researchers and engineers involved in micromanipulation and precision assembly will find this a highly useful reference for microassembly system design and analysis.

Design Patterns for e-Science (Mixed media product, 2007 ed.): Henry Gardner, Gabriele Manduchi Design Patterns for e-Science (Mixed media product, 2007 ed.)
Henry Gardner, Gabriele Manduchi
R1,586 Discovery Miles 15 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a book about a code and about coding. The code is a case study which has been used to teachcourses in e-Science atthe Australian NationalUniv- sity since 2001. Students learn advanced programming skills and techniques TM in the Java language. Above all, they learn to apply useful object-oriented design patterns as they progressively refactor and enhance the software. We think our case study,EScope, is as close to real life as you can get! It is a smaller version of a networked, graphical, waveform browser which is used in the control rooms of fusion energy experiments around the world. It is quintessential "e-Science" in the sense of e-Science being "computer science and information technology in the service of science". It is not, speci?cally, "Grid-enabled", but we develop it in a way that will facilitate its deployment onto the Grid. The standard version ofEScope interfaces with a specialised database for waveforms, and related data, known asMDSplus. On the acc- panying CD, we have provided you with software which will enable you to installMDSplus,EScope and sample data ?les onto Windows or Linux c- puters. There is much additional software including many versions of the case study as it gets built up and progressively refactored using design patterns. There will be a home web-site for this book which will contain up-to-date information about the software and other aspects of the case study.

R5,697 Discovery Miles 56 970 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Discovered in 1880, piezoelectric materials play a key role in an innovative market of several billions of dollars. Recent advances in applications derive from new materials and their development, as well as to new market requirements. With the exception of quartz, ferroelectric materials are used for they offer both high efficiency and sufficient versatility to meet adequately the multidimensional requirements for application. Consequently, strong emphasis is placed on tailoring materials and technology, whether one deals with single crystals, ceramics or plastic materials. Tailoring requires a basic understanding of both physical principles and technical possibilities and limitations. This report elucidates these developments by a broad spectrum of examples, comprising ultrasound in medicine and defence industry, frequency control, signal processing by SAW-devices, sensors, actuators, including novel valves for modern motor management. It delivers a mutual fertilization of technology push and market pull that should be of interest not only to materials scientists or engineers but also to managers who dedicate themselves to a sound future-oriented R&D policy.

Mobility Management in Wireless Networks - Data Replication Strategies and Applications (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Karen Q. Tian,... Mobility Management in Wireless Networks - Data Replication Strategies and Applications (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Karen Q. Tian, Donald C. Cox
R2,971 Discovery Miles 29 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This timely book is a comprehensive treatment of managing mobility in wireless networks. Significant new insight is also provided into solutions to file allocation problems, specifically data replication, faced in distributed database systems by Computer Scientists. Some of the solutions are applications from the general facility location problems in Operations Research.
The authors thoroughly investigate replication for hierarchical mobility management where the underlying network forms a tree-like structure. Various problem formulations are considered that provide new insight into more comprehensive solutions. The off-line replication problem is reduced to problems in discrete location theory for which efficient dynamic programming solutions exist for tree networks. To solve the on-line replication problem, a unified framework is established that provides unique visual representation of the overall solution structure. This framework not only demonstrates the correspondence between two previously proposed on-line algorithms but also provides the basis for new algorithms and expands the applicability of the original problem formulation. All algorithms derived in this book have been implemented and simulated using realistic traffic models. Their performance is compared with previously proposed algorithms.
Mobility Management In Wireless Networks: Data Replication Strategies and Applications is an excellent reference for engineers, computer scientists, operations researchers and others working in mobility management as well as in related fields including distributed database systems, data management and facility location.
