The Theory of Horticulture - Or, An Attempt to Explain the Principal Operations of Gardening upon Physiological Principles... The Theory of Horticulture - Or, An Attempt to Explain the Principal Operations of Gardening upon Physiological Principles (Paperback)
John Lindley
R1,133 Discovery Miles 11 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

John Lindley (1799-1865) was an English horticulturalist who worked for Sir Joseph Banks and was later instrumental in saving the Royal Horticultural Society from financial disaster. His earlier books on British plants were well received and he was influential in the realm of botanical nomenclature, especially in orchidology. He was a prolific author and many of his books were aimed at a non-specialist readership. His aim in this work, published in 1840, was to provide 'the intelligent gardener, and the scientific amateur ... with the rationalia of the more important operations of horticulture'. Beginning with a chapter on seeds, the first part of the book describes the life and structure of a plant - the root, the stem, the leaves, the flowers and the fruit. The second part moves on to practical topics, such as ventilation and seed-saving, as well as pruning and potting, explaining many basic concepts of plant cultivation.

Glasshouse Greenhouse - Haarkon's World Tour of Amazing Botanical Spaces (Hardcover): India Hobson, Magnus Edmondson Glasshouse Greenhouse - Haarkon's World Tour of Amazing Botanical Spaces (Hardcover)
India Hobson, Magnus Edmondson 1
R802 R571 Discovery Miles 5 710 Save R231 (29%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Greenhouses fuse together cultures and countries under one glass roof. In their debut book, photographers India Hobson and Magnus Edmondson take you on a worldwide journey through their favourite botanical spaces.

The Haarkon Greenhouse Tour began as a self-initiated adventure in Oxford s botanic garden four years ago. Since then, Magnus and India have visited countless locations in the UK, Europe, America, Asia and beyond in search of dream glasshouses and greenhouses, capturing dramatic palm houses, tropical hothouses and private potting sheds along the way.

Divided into seven thematic chapters History, Specimen, Community, Research, Pleasure, Hobbyist and Architecture the featured spaces in Glasshouse / Greenhouse are depicted via a series of photo-essays that draw out the style, plant collections and character of each space.

Abiotic Stress Physiology of Horticultural Crops (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): N.K. Srinivasa Rao, K.S. Shivashankara, R. H. Laxman Abiotic Stress Physiology of Horticultural Crops (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
N.K. Srinivasa Rao, K.S. Shivashankara, R. H. Laxman
R5,829 Discovery Miles 58 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book brings together recent advances in the area of abiotic stress tolerance in various vegetables, fruit crops, plantation crops and tuber crops. The main challenges to improving the productivity of horticultural crops are the different types of abiotic stresses generally caused by climate change at the regional and global level. Heat, drought, cold and salinity are the major abiotic stresses that adversely affect growth and productivity and can trigger a series of morphological, physiological, biochemical and molecular changes in various horticultural crops. To date, there are no books covering horticultural crop-specific abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms and their management. Addressing that gap, the book is divided into 2 sections, the first of which highlights recent advances in the general aspects of abiotic stress tolerance like the role of hormones, reactive oxygen species, seed treatments, molecular mechanisms of heat tolerance and heavy metal toxicity, while the second focuses on the abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms of various vegetables, fruit crops, plantation crops and tuber crops. It includes comprehensive discussions of fruit crops like mango, grapes, banana, litchi and arid zone fruits; vegetables crops like tomato, capsicum, onion and tuber crops; and plantation crops like coconut, areca nut, oil palm and black pepper. Among the strategies for plant stress survival, examples of both avoidance and tolerance relevant to particular crops are examined in detail, supported by selected comprehensive case studies of progress. As such, the book offers a valuable resource suited for scientists and graduate students working in the fields of crop improvement, genetic engineering, and the abiotic stress tolerance of horticultural crops.

Get Plants - How to bring green into your life (Hardcover): Katherine Price Get Plants - How to bring green into your life (Hardcover)
Katherine Price 1
R797 Discovery Miles 7 970 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

It's official, plants are cool. They conjure up exotic places, bring nature indoors and make you feel better. Who wouldn't choose to share a space with them - but where do you start? The good news is there's a plant for every windowsill or shelf, for every shady yard or front door step. And whatever your style - from urban sleek to shabby chic to retro - there are plants that will fit into your life and make it brighter and more interesting. Get Plants picks up on this trend by putting plants front and centre of a new book for a wide general audience, especially those that don't see themselves as gardeners. It shows that with a little know-how you can find a plant that will flourish in the many different "ecological niches" available in and around your home from shady basement stairwell to south-facing windowsill. Exciting contemporary photography shows how they pep up your living space and give a taste of the satisfaction you get in looking after them. This is an opportunity to showcase intriguing sundews and lithops, grow large majestic trees from seed to keep on your front step (for a while) and find out a bit of plant science along the way - why do orchid flowers last so long, why must you keep water topped up in the funnel of a bromeliad? The book draws on the work of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew - its scientific work, plant hunting and fieldwork, plant collections and horticultural knowledge. Throughout the book author Katherine Price weaves in the expert advice of Kew's gardeners and scientists, distilling the essence of Kew's expertise into practical use. This no-nonsense, beautiful book is a practical guide guaranteed to inspire any reader.
