This book is a biblical approach to the recovery from obsessions. The obsessions can be as minor as fishing too often or as major as full blown addictions to drugs. The point is that Jesus Christ gave us guidelines on how to moderate and on how to be healed when necessary from these obsessions. The outline from Matthew in the New Testament is where Jesus teaches us the format for recovery. It is why he starts with being "poor in spirit" and ends in being persecuted for your beliefs. This simple outline from Matthew 5: 1-12 is where basically all recovery programs have their origin, and I have included in the back of the book a chapter titled "The beatitudes and their correlation to the twelve steps." It is the premise of this work to bring clarity to the truth that has always been in God's Word. It is a work that reads well and was a pleasant task to write. In contrast to these busy first few weeks of establishing back-to-school routines, as well as the uncertainty of medical tests for Kjrsten, I reflected back on the quiet respite we'd had over the past summer.

One of our favorite summer activities was to sit on the long, covered front porch of our home and watch the storms as they rolled in from the west across Clear Creek. We'd listen for the thunder and see the lightning striking at the bottom of the hill as the storm climbed upward and through the cornfield to the edge of our yard. We were relieved as it rumbled noisily over the top of our house without leaving any damage as it continued its steady march to the east.

Little did we know what kind of storm was brewing for our perfect little family.

When I was in my early forties, I began writing a regular column for the newspaper sent to Episcopalians in the diocese of Chicago. In Faithwalk, I tried to describe my struggles as a believing Christian set against my background as a lawyer, single parent, son of aging parents, and sinner. This venture in self-analysis continued a process of trying to square my life with God's call to a Christian begun many years earlier, but the writing was, I believe, an insight into how God works in all lives. Though written from a Christian perspective, these essays should appeal to anyone struggling with his or her faith in a world that seems spinning out of control. And I believe that God uses nonbelievers as a fulcrum to test our own belief.

Now in my early sixties, after the columns collected dust, I reread them, and I think they stand the test of time. So, I have decided to publish them in a book, adding a bit of commentary to provide the context. They have been arranged, not in the order they were written, but rather according to topic, topics suggested by the biblical narrative by which the Creator of the universe loved us so much that he sent his only Son to die for us.
