Every parent has pondered "nature vs. nurture" questions. How much
of my child's personality and behavior is inborn? How much is
learned? This important new book written by behavioral scientists
who are also mothers has answers. This book offers the best
parenting practices to foster resilience by encouraging children's
social-emotional development and adaptive stress-regulation
strategies. The authors translate scientific research into
concrete, actionable tips and recommendations to help promote the
emotional wellbeing of both child and parent. Authors Stacey N.
Doan and Jessica Borelli offer a science-based framework to help
show parents and guardians how biology and parenting work together.
Although genetics are significant, DNA is not destiny--the die is
not cast at birth. Parenting still matters, deeply. Cutting-edge
epigenetics research and other recent scientific insights are
explained to show that biology and parenting behavior are
integrally intertwined. Increasingly competitive schools, looming
threats of climate change, and the Covid-19 pandemic have sent many
parents' anxiety spiraling out of control. This affects their kids,
creating a recurring cycle of stress and worry. This book is here
to help.
This practical, effective guide for parents introduces proven
principles for overcoming the anxieties and stresses of parenting
and setting new patterns of connection and cooperation in order to
give kids what they need to grow into caring, self-directed adults.
Why do I have to repeat everything? Why does every conversation end
in an argument? Communicating with our children. Conversing.
Connecting. When did it become so difficult? And how do we begin to
change it for the better? This book was designed to help parents
answer these important questions, and it is based on two
fundamental ideas: The first is that there are no bad children, and
no deliberately bad parents -- but that sometimes, despite the best
of intentions on both sides, there can be bad relationships between
parents and children. The second is that, as parents, we must do
everything we can to save those relationships, to reach out and
really communicate with our children, because it is only through
talking to them that we can create an environment for inspiration
and change. In this compelling book, Shmuley Boteach, passionate
social commentator and outspoken relationship guru, walks you
through the critical conversations, including: cherishing
childhood; developing intellectual curiosity; knowing who you are
and what you want to become; learning to forgive; realizing the
importance of family and tradition; being fearless and courageous.
As a father of eight, Rabbi Shmuley speaks from a wealth of
experience. He has written a book for parents of children of all
ages, from toddlers, who are just beginning to become aware of the
world around them, to adolescents, who must learn to navigate all
sorts of tricky social and academic pressures. 10 Conversations
will help you stay connected to your children so that they develop
the kind of strong moral character that leads to rich, meaningful
lives.

Often described as "social phobia's cousin" and misdiagnosed as
autism, selective mutism is a debilitating fear of speaking in some
situations experienced by some children. The disorder usually
presents in children before the age of five, but it may not be
recognized until the child starts school. When requested to speak,
children with selective mutism often look down, blush, or otherwise
express anxiety that disrupts their engagement with people and
activities. Selective mutism is related to social anxiety and
social phobia, and more than 90 percent of children with selective
mutism also manifest symptoms of one of these problems.
This book is the first available for parents of children with
selective mutism. It offers a broad overview of the condition and
reviews the diagnostic criteria for the disorder. The book details
a plan you can use to coordinate professional treatment of your
child's disorder. It also explains the steps you can take on your
own to encourage your child to speak comfortably in school and in
his or her peer group. All of the book's strategies employ a
gradual, "stepladder" approach. The techniques gently encourage
children to speak more, while at the same time helping them feel
safe and supported.
Angela E. McHolm, Ph.D., is director of the Selective Mutism
Service at McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, ON. The
Selective Mutism Service offers outpatient psychiatric consultation
to families and professionals such as school personnel, speech and
language pathologists, and mental health clinicians who support
children with selective mutism. She is assistant professor in the
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences in the
Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton,
ON.
