The Analysis of Matter (Hardcover): Bertrand Russell The Analysis of Matter (Hardcover)
Bertrand Russell; Introduction by John G. Slater
R4,353 Discovery Miles 43 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Analysis of Matter is the product of thirty years of thinking by one of the twentieth century's best-known philosophers. An inquiry into the philosophical foundations of physics, it was written against the background of stunning new developments in physics earlier in the century, above all relativity, as well as the excitement around quantum theory, which was just being developed. Concerned to place physics on a stable footing at a time of great theoretical change, Russell argues that the concept of matter itself can be replaced by a logical construction whose basic foundations are events. He is careful to point out that this does not prove that matter does not exist, but it does show that physicists can get on with their work without assuming that matter does exist. Russell argues that fundamental bits of ''matter'', such as electrons and protons, are simply groups of events connected in a certain way and their properties are all that are required for physics. This Routledge Classics edition includes the 1992 Introduction by John G. Slater.

The Guattari Reader (Hardcover): G Genosko The Guattari Reader (Hardcover)
G Genosko
R4,344 Discovery Miles 43 440 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Felix Guattari (1930-1992) was a radical analyst, social theorist and activist-intellectual. Best known for his collaborations with the philosopher Gilles Deleuze on "Anti-Oedipus, A Thousand Plateaus" and "What is Philosophy?, The Guattari Reader" makes available for the first time the broad canvas of Guattari's formidable theoretical and activist writings, many previously untranslated, to provide an indispensable companion to the existing literature.

Aside from illustrating the salience of Guattari's collaborative work with Deleuze and other European intellectuals, this volume charts Guattari's own solo writing career - from his tenure as Lacan's analysand in the 1950s and his prominent role in the international anti-psychiatry movement of the 1960s through his participation in queer politics, outlaw radio, and the formation of subversive collective organizations. This volume provides an important register of Guattari's more political side, documenting his interventions in particular political conflicts in contemporary Europe.

Guattari's ideas and projects defy disciplinary boundaries and escape compartmentalization. They will appeal to those working in and between politics, philosophy, semiotics, psychoanalysis, sociology, and cultural studies.

The Afterlife of Texts in Translation - Understanding the Messianic in Literature (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Edmund Chapman The Afterlife of Texts in Translation - Understanding the Messianic in Literature (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Edmund Chapman
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Afterlife of Texts in Translation: Understanding the Messianic in Literature reads Walter Benjamin's and Jacques Derrida's writings on translation as suggesting that texts exist within a process of continual translation. Understanding Benjamin's and Derrida's concept of 'afterlife' as 'overliving', this book proposes that reading Benjamin's and Derrida's writings on translation in terms of their wider thought on language and history suggests that textuality itself possesses a 'messianic' quality. Developing this idea in relation to the many rewritings and translations of Don Quijote, particularly the multiple rewritings by Jorge Luis Borges, Edmund Chapman asserts that texts consist of a structure of potential for endless translation that continually promises the overcoming of language, history and textuality itself.

Idea of Pure Critique (Hardcover): Iain Mackenzie Idea of Pure Critique (Hardcover)
Iain Mackenzie
R5,594 Discovery Miles 55 940 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Idea of Pure Critique will be invaluable to students of Kant as well as those interested in Deleuze and Guattari's contribution to philosophies of difference. More fundamentally, the book presents a series of stimulating political and philosophical challenges to the apathy and indifference that pervade modern life. What is required of critique if it is to overcome indifference? This question addresses core themes in modern, post-Kantian and European philosophy, challenging theory's resignation in the face of contemporary political and economic formations. In this book, Iain Mackenzie argues eloquently that if such indifference is to be overcome, critique must first be demarcated in its purity, as an idea of critique in and of itself. Moreover, for the idea of critique to become pure we must view it as being essentially the construction of difference. Only in this pure form, understood as the construction of difference, can critique hope to overcome the crushing indifference of our current age.

Deleuze and the Map-Image - Aesthetics, Information, Code, and Digital Art (Hardcover): Jakub Zdebik Deleuze and the Map-Image - Aesthetics, Information, Code, and Digital Art (Hardcover)
Jakub Zdebik
R3,892 Discovery Miles 38 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The map, as it appears in Gilles Deleuze's writings, is a concept guiding the exploration of new territories, no matter how abstract. With the advent of new media and digital technologies, contemporary artists have imagined a panoply of new spaces that put Deleuze's concept to the test. Deleuze's concept of the map bridges the gap between the analog and the digital, information and representation, virtual and actual, canvas and screen and is therefore best suited for the contemporary artistic landscape. Deleuze and the Map-Image explores cartography from philosophical and aesthetic perspectives and argues that the concept of the map is a critical touchstone for contemporary multidisciplinary art. This book is an overview of Deleuze's cartographic thought read through the theories of Sloterdijk, Heidegger, and Virilio and the art criticism of Laura U. Marks, Carolyn L. Kane, and Alexander Galloway, shaping it into a critical tool through which to view the works of cutting edge artists such as Janice Kerbel and Hajra Waheed, who work with digital and analog art. After all, Deleuze did write that a map can be conceived as a work of art, and so herein art is critiqued through cartographic strategies.

Semiotics and Pragmatism - Theoretical Interfaces (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Ivo Assad Ibri Semiotics and Pragmatism - Theoretical Interfaces (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Ivo Assad Ibri
R2,929 Discovery Miles 29 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of essays brings together a selection of some of the most important studies of Professor Ivo Assad Ibri about the work of Charles Sanders Peirce. In the last decades, Prof. Ibri made important contributions to Peirce studies by showing that the various individual aspects of Peirce's work actually form a coherent philosophical system, a metaphysical architecture, as he describes it in his previous book Kosmos Noetos (Springer, 2017). Now this new book brings together a selection of 24 articles and book chapters originally published in both Portuguese and English on different topics and aspects of Peirce's work, such as philosophy of art, heuristic logic, theories of beliefs and habits, objective idealism, pragmatism and pragmaticism. By bringing together this collection of essays in a single publication, Semiotics and Pragmatism: Theoretical Interfaces will be a valuable source for scholars interested in Prof. Ibri's unique contributions to the study of the philosophy of Charles Sanders Peirce. "In recognizing Ivo Assad Ibri as one the leading exponents of qualitative interpretations of Peirce in the world today, I refer especially to Ibri's concentration on Peirce's later-phase metaphysical writings. Ibri's expertise will be seen to consist in his precise reformulations of Peirce's full-fledged philosophy, not just pursuing specialized minor topics." David A. Dilworth Professor of Philosophy, Stonybrook University "Ivo Ibri's collected essays brims with clarifying insights from beginning to end. He manages to reveal plenty of aspects of Peirce's thought from angles the traditional scholarship has not been equipped to notice. How not to miss such kairotic theoretical opportunities and how to exploit them to heuristic advantage is a lesson well taught in this outstanding book." Andre De Tienne Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Peirce Edition Project, Indiana University

The Future of Human Nature (Hardcover): J Habermas The Future of Human Nature (Hardcover)
J Habermas
R1,477 Discovery Miles 14 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Recent developments in biotechnology and genetic research are raising complex ethical questions concerning the legitimate scope and limits of genetic intervention. As we begin to contemplate the possibility of intervening in the human genome to prevent diseases, we cannot help but feel that the human species might soon take biological evolution into its own hands. In this important new book, Jurgen Habermas--the most influential philosopher and social thinker in Germany today--takes up the question of genetic engineering and its ethical implications and subjects it to careful philosophical scrutiny. Habermas's analysis is guided by the view that genetic manipulation is closely tied to the identity and self-understanding of the species. Habermas is particularly concerned with the question of how the biotechnological blurring of the distinction between the "grown" and the "made" may change our ethical self-understanding both as members of the species and as individuals. We cannot rule out the possibility that knowledge of one's own heredity will restrict individual freedom and undermine the symmetrical relations between free and equal human beings. In the concluding chapter--which was delivered as a lecture on receiving the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade for 2001--Habermas broadens the discussion to examine the tension between science and religion in the modern world, a tension that exploded with tragic violence on September 11, 2001.

Deleuze and the Diagram - Aesthetic Threads in Visual Organization (Hardcover, New): Jakub Zdebik Deleuze and the Diagram - Aesthetic Threads in Visual Organization (Hardcover, New)
Jakub Zdebik
R3,158 Discovery Miles 31 580 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Deleuze and the Diagram charts Deleuze's corpus according to aesthetic concepts such as the map, the sketch and the drawing to bring out a comprehensive concept of the diagram. In his interrogation of Deleuze's visualaesthetic theory, Jakub Zdebik focuses on artists that hold an important place in Deleuze's system. The art of Paul Klee and Francis Bacon is presented as the visual manifestation of Deleuze's philosophy and yields novel ways of assessing visual culture. Zdebik goes on to compare Deleuze's philosophy with the visual theories of Foucault, Lyotard and Simondon, as well as the aesthetic philosophy of Heidegger and Kant. He shows how the visual and aesthetic elements of the diagram shed new light on Deleuze's writings.Deleuze conceptualized his theory as a form of painting, saying that, like art, it needed to shift from figuration to abstraction. This book focuses on the visual devices in Deleuze's work and uses the concept of the diagram to describe the relationship between philosophy and art and to formulate a way to think about philosophy through art.

Castoriadis and Autonomy in the Twenty-first Century (Hardcover): Alexandros Schismenos, Nikos Ioannou, Chris Spannos Castoriadis and Autonomy in the Twenty-first Century (Hardcover)
Alexandros Schismenos, Nikos Ioannou, Chris Spannos
R3,380 Discovery Miles 33 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

To what degree can the philosophy of Cornelius Castoriadis help analyze and evaluate our current social reality in relation to the project of autonomy? How meaningful is his political proposition for direct democracy in the 21st century? What significance do the concepts of social time and social space have in the determination of political freedom? Castoriadis and Autonomy in the 21st Century presents basic concepts of Castoriadian philosophy, including the social-historical plane, ontological creativity, and social and individual time that provide the theoretical tools to evaluate the historical phenomena of our era. Drawing from Greece's own turbulent past and the current global crisis to reveal new significances of social freedom, global solidarity and movements of direct democracy, this book explores social autonomy and human freedom today through critical dialogue with Castoriadis' ideas.

Castoriadis, Foucault, and Autonomy - New Approaches to Subjectivity, Society, and Social Change (Hardcover, New): Marcela... Castoriadis, Foucault, and Autonomy - New Approaches to Subjectivity, Society, and Social Change (Hardcover, New)
Marcela Tovar Restrepo
R5,259 Discovery Miles 52 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"This book examines Cornelius Castoriadis' thought and the radical alternative it presents to the legacy of Michel Foucault, focusing on three key notions that are central in both scholars' theories: the subject, the production of social meaning and representation, and social/cultural change. Castoriadis and Foucault faced similar theoretical and political challenges and tackled common questions, yet their conclusions diverged significantly. This important book establishes, for the first time, a critical dialogue between these two bodies of thought. Through a detailed exploration of the Castoridian perspective, Marcela Tovar-Restrepo addresses the limitations of Foucault's poststructuralist thought; exploring and comparing what those three central notions mean in each framework. In so doing, Tovar-Restrepo elucidates a greater understanding of their differences and the resulting consequences for the social sciences and the role of social theory. Ultimately, this book presents Castoriadis' philosophical and theoretical position as an alternative to unresolved poststructuralist problems and to what Castoriadis saw as a deterministic ontology embedded in political relativism; paving the way for an invigorating debate about autonomy and social change. "

Rethinking Joseph Conrad's Concepts of Community - Strange Fraternity (Hardcover): Kaoru Yamamoto Rethinking Joseph Conrad's Concepts of Community - Strange Fraternity (Hardcover)
Kaoru Yamamoto
R4,233 Discovery Miles 42 330 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Rethinking Joseph Conrad's Concepts of Community uses Conrad's phrase 'strange fraternity' from The Rover as a starting point for an exploration of the concept of community in his writing, including his neglected vignettes and later stories. Drawing on the work of continental thinkers including Jacques Derrida, Jean Luc-Nancy and Hannah Arendt, Yamamoto offers original readings of Heart of Darkness, The Nigger of the 'Narcissus', The Rover and Suspense and the short stories "The Secret Sharer", "The Warrior's Soul" and "The Duel". Working at the intersection between literature and philosophy, this is a unique and interdisciplinary engagement with Conrad's work.

The Routledge Handbook of Linguistic Reference (Paperback): Stephen Biggs, Heimir Geirsson The Routledge Handbook of Linguistic Reference (Paperback)
Stephen Biggs, Heimir Geirsson
R1,570 Discovery Miles 15 700 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This Handbook offers students and more advanced readers a valuable resource for understanding linguistic reference; the relation between an expression (word, phrase, sentence) and what that expression is about. The volume's forty-one original chapters, written by many of today's leading philosophers of language, are organized into ten parts: I Early Descriptive Theories II Causal Theories of Reference III Causal Theories and Cognitive Significance IV Alternate Theories V Two-Dimensional Semantics VI Natural Kind Terms and Rigidity VII The Empty Case VIII Singular (De Re) Thoughts IX Indexicals X Epistemology of Reference Contributions consider what kinds of expressions actually refer (names, general terms, indexicals, empty terms, sentences), what referring expressions refer to, what makes an expression refer to whatever it does, connections between meaning and reference, and how we know facts about reference. Many contributions also develop connections between linguistic reference and issues in metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science.

Big Picture Perspectives on Planetary Flourishing - Metatheory for the Anthropocene Volume 1 (Hardcover): Nicholas Hedlund,... Big Picture Perspectives on Planetary Flourishing - Metatheory for the Anthropocene Volume 1 (Hardcover)
Nicholas Hedlund, Sean Esbjoern-Hargens
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book, split across two volumes, is a follow-up and companion to Metatheory for the Twenty-First Century (Routledge, 2016). All three of these volumes are the dialogical outcome of a multi-year symposia series wherein critical realists and integral theorists deeply engaged each other and their distinct but complementary approaches to integrative metatheory. Whereas Metatheory for the Twenty-First Century is primarily theoretical in its focus, Big Picture Perspectives for Planetary Flourishing: Metatheory for the Anthropocene aims to more concretely and practically address the complex planetary crises of a new era that many scholars now refer to as 'the Anthropocene.' In this first of two new volumes, participants of the symposia series articulate a variety of 'big picture perspectives' and transformative interventions in the domains of society and economics, social psychology, and education. Together, these chapters demonstrate how integrative metatheory and its application can make powerful contributions to planetary flourishing in the Anthropocene. With one of the defining characteristics of the Anthropocene being the sheer complexity and multi-valent nature of our interconnected global challenges, these volumes crucially present new forms of scholarship that can adequately weave together insights from multiple disciplines into new forms of metapraxis. As such, this book will be of interest to students, scholars, and practitioners in the areas of philosophy, social theory, critical realism, integral studies, metamodernism, and current affairs generally.

Deleuze at the End of the World - Latin American Perspectives (Hardcover): Dorothea E Olkowski, Julian Ferreyra Deleuze at the End of the World - Latin American Perspectives (Hardcover)
Dorothea E Olkowski, Julian Ferreyra
R3,256 Discovery Miles 32 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The philosophy of Deleuze is as relevant to contemporary thought as it is obscure and complex. Deleuze at the End of the World guides readers through this maze by exploring the raw material that Deleuze took from various fields of knowledge to construct his own concepts, some of them well known (such as Hegel, Kant, Husserl, Balibar and Blanchot) and some widely unexplored (Selme, Guillaume, Bakhtine and Dalcq). At the same time, readers will gain access to South American perspectives on contemporary philosophy. Contextualized with an Introduction by one of the pioneers of the Deleuzian Studies at a global level, Dorothea Olkowski, this book provides both a unique tool for comprehending the philosophy of Deleuze, but also insight into to the way it has been read in the periphery of the American and European scholarship -where "the end of the world" means not only a geographical contingency, but the encounter of thought with its own limits. This collection is both a refreshing approach to Deleuzian philosophy, as well as a continuous and innovative experience of thinking.

Badiou and Hegel - Infinity, Dialectics, Subjectivity (Paperback): Jim Vernon, Antonio Calcagno Badiou and Hegel - Infinity, Dialectics, Subjectivity (Paperback)
Jim Vernon, Antonio Calcagno; Contributions by Alberto Toscano, Gabriel Riera, Frank Ruda, …
R1,261 Discovery Miles 12 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Badiou and Hegel: Infinity, Dialectics, Subjectivity offers critical appraisals of two of the dominant figures of the Continental tradition of philosophy, Alain Badiou and G.W.F. Hegel. Jim Vernon and Antonio Calcagno bring together established and emerging authors in Continental philosophy to discuss the relationship between the thinkers, creating a multifarious collection of essays by Hegelians, Badiouans, and those sympathetic to both. The text privileges neither thinker, nor any particular topic shared between them; rather, this book lays a broad and sound foundation for future scholarship on arguably two of the greatest thinkers of infinity, universality, subjectivity, and the enduring value of philosophy in the modern Western canon. Assuredly overdue, this volume will attract Hegel and Badiou scholars, as well as those interested in post-structuralism, political philosophy, cultural studies, ontology, philosophy of mathematics, and psychoanalysis.

Jacques Derrida and the Challenge of History (Hardcover): Sean Gaston Jacques Derrida and the Challenge of History (Hardcover)
Sean Gaston
R3,161 Discovery Miles 31 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This important new book argues that Jacques Derrida's work can be treated as the basis for a distinctive historiography. The possibility of seeing Derrida not as a philosopher of language but as a philosopher of history has become more apparent with the recent publication of Derrida's 1964-1965 seminar Heidegger: The Question of Being and History. We now know that the problem of history was at the heart of Derrida's writing in the mid-1960s, prior to the publication of his best-known work, Of Grammatology (1967). Arguing that Derrida's scholarship in the 1960s and early 1970s on historicism, historicity and the problem of history can be treated as the basis for a philosophy of history, Sean Gaston focuses on Derrida's work from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s and his relentless questioning of context, memory and narrative as the delineation of a deconstructive historiography. The book raises a challenge for historians to think about both deconstruction and historiography, arguing that contemporary philosophy can provide a basis for thinking about history in the name of a deconstructive historiography that is not incompatible with rigorous historical scholarship.
