Help adolescents learn and use the academic words that will assist them in school and beyond. The author argues that "words worth using" must matter to adolescents' authentic work in the disciplines and connect to their lived experiences. Rather than using a model of vocabulary instruction that positions students as passive recipients who must simply memorize definitions, Townsend outlines a metalinguistic approach that shows students how to learn words by using them in ways that are meaningful to their identity, language background, and individual interests. The book provides research-based instructional routines to support adolescents as they learn and use new words in their disciplinary learning. It explores how academic vocabulary can position students as "insiders" or "outsiders," and how culturally sustaining instruction can welcome all students into discovering and using language. Words Worth Using will be a popular resource for teachers who feel stymied by the sheer volume of words they are expected to teach.Book Features: An engaging exploration of adolescents and the kinds of powerful word learning that endure. Metalinguistic awareness as an underleveraged approach to helping adolescents develop word knowledge in engaging ways. A culturally sustaining pedagogy framework with specific attention to emergent bilinguals. "Words Worth Using" boxes that share the etymology and morphology of many important words throughout the text. A careful review and explanation of research accompanied by classroom anecdotes, real-world examples, and templates for teachers and instructional leaders to use in their own contexts.
The Deonomasticon Italicum provides a systematic historical treatment of, and commentary on, the lexemes of Italian derived from proper names. It covers both derivations from geographical names (including those from ethnic roots, which are of especial interest both for the history of vocabulary and for cultural history) and from the names of persons. The first part of the Dictionary (4 volumes) is devoted to derivations from geographical names, the second (2 volumes) to the names of persons. The Deonomasticon Italicum will be published in complete volumes and no longer in the form of single fascicles.
This book offers a comprehensive investigation into advanced students' knowledge of vocabulary in their L1 and L2. As a cross-sectional study, it examines the quantitative aspects of students' vocabulary knowledge through parallel tests of upper secondary level vocabulary, specialised vocabulary, and advanced vocabulary in both their L1 and L2. It also, primarily in qualitative terms, investigates students' L1 and L2 knowledge of polysemous words, lexical fields of near synonyms and false friends. Knowledge of derivative forms, idioms, proverbs, idiomatically used prepositions and multi-word verbs offer insights into both the breadth and depth of students' L1 and L2 vocabulary knowledge. Finally, it considers the extent to which students' results can be attributed to differences between inferencing skills in their L1 and L2. In each subfield, the pedagogical implications of the findings are discussed. This book will be of interest to teachers and researchers focusing on the teaching and learning of vocabulary.
Originally published in 1907, as the revised edition of an 1893 original, this informative and engaging textbook sets out to contain and explicate all of the elements of English grammar. Primarily aimed at secondary school students, this book condenses and synthesizes the most important information, recognising and demonstrating throughout 'how much the half is greater than the whole'. Notably, 'a good supply of sentences for correction has been added to the concluding chapters on syntax' and questions appear at the end of each chapter to reinforce learning. Most questions have been chosen from Cambridge and Oxford Local Examination Papers and papers from the Royal College of Preceptors. Chapters are broad in scope; chapter headings include, 'Inflexion of nouns', 'Auxiliary and defective verbs' and 'Syntax of verbs'. This book will be of considerable value to anyone with an interest in the history of the English language and the history of education.
The Reading Biblical Greek Workbook is a companion resource to Reading Biblical Greek: A Grammar for Students. The student will have read and translated the whole of Mark 1-4 by the time they complete the workbook
Originally published in 1922, this book contains a series of passages in English intended for translation into French. The text was created as an additional tool for teachers who had worked through the translation passages in Cambridge's Manual of French Composition. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in the French language, translation and the history of education.
The essays in this volume address a core question regarding the structure of linguistic systems: how much access do the grammatical components - syntax, morphology and phonology - have to each other? The book's fifteen essays make a powerful argument in favor of a particular view of the interaction of these various components, shedding light on the nature of locality domains for allomorph selection, the morphosyntactic properties of the targets of phonological exponence, and adjudicating between competing theories of morphosyntaxphonology interaction. These words incorporate insights from recent theoretical developments such as Optimality Theory and Distributed Morphology, and insights made available to us by contemporary empirical methodologies, including field work and experimental and corpus-based quantitative work.
This pioneering piece of research on the situated study of language issues in the context of forced migration provides interdisciplinary insights into language as learned, used and lived by 12 Congolese refugees in Norway. It offers an innovative contribution to the field of SLA by bringing together structural, cognitive, social and critical approaches to data collected among the same individuals, these individuals being underrepresented within the field of SLA research as both refugees and learners whose experiences with language stem from the Global South. Their histories of mobility and their learning contexts are rarely reflected in theories and concepts from the Global North and this book thus makes a much-needed contribution to the field.
Learning a foreign language is much easier when it is approached with a knowledge of language structure ('grammar'), but many students find grammar mystifying. This text explains points of grammar straightforwardly using examples from several widely-studied languages, including English, so that students can see how the same principles work across different languages, and how the structures of different languages correspond both formally and functionally. The use of concrete examples makes grammar less abstract and easier to grasp, allowing students to relate what they are learning to knowledge that they already possess unconsciously; it simultaneously brings that knowledge up to a conscious level.
Korean Reader for Chinese Characters will help students of Korean master basic Chinese characters that are frequently encountered in everyday situations. More than five hundred characters are targeted in exercises that aid in the efficient study of the forms, meanings, and sounds of individual characters and their compounds. Although the primary goal of the Reader is recognition of basic Chinese characters, students are encouraged to learn to write them properly by inclusion of a section on stroke order. The Reader is also designed to reinforce skills in reading and writing in Korean while studying Chinese characters. Forty lessons are preceded by an introductory chapter on the principles of Chinese character formation and reading and writing characters and followed by appendices on stroke order, English translations of the main reading text of each lesson, and an index of characters. The lessons are organized into seven parts: new characters, reading text, glossary, notes, new words in characters, more words in characters, and exercises. After every fifth lesson, there is a section reviewing all the characters introduced in the preceding five lessons.
Updated and revised with more examples and expanded discussions, this second edition continues the aim of providing teachers with a solid understanding of the use and function of grammatical structures in American English. The book avoids jargon and presents essential grammatical structures clearly and concisely. Dr. DeCapua approaches grammar from a descriptive rather than a prescriptive standpoint, discussing differences between formal and informal language, and spoken and written English. The text draws examples from a wide variety of authentic materials to illustrate grammatical concepts. The many activities throughout the book engage users in exploring the different elements of grammar and in considering how these elements work together to form meaning. Users are encouraged to tap into their own, often subconscious, knowledge of grammar to consciously apply their knowledge to their own varied teaching settings. The text also emphasizes the importance of understanding grammar from the perspective of English language learners, an approach that allows teachers to better appreciate the difficulties these learners face. Specific areas of difficulties for learners of English are highlighted throughout.

The Church Slavonic (Slavic) language was devised in the ninth century. Based on Old Bulgarian, it was created by the Greek missionary brothers Cyril and Methodius. As the first written Slavic language it has become the mother of all modern Slavic languages and continues in daily use in the services of the Slavic Orthodox Churches. (Russian, Bulgarian, Polish etc.) This is a comprehensive grammar of the Church Slavonic language, covering etymology, parts of speech, and syntax. This English edition was translated from the Russian and includes an explanation of grammatical points that would be taken for granted by a native Russian speaker. Long used as a seminary textbook both in North America and Russia, Archbishop Alypy's work is an absolutely unique publication in English and is essential for anyone desiring to study Church Slavonic, from beginning learner to advanced scholar. Texts for practice are largely drawn from the Gospels. This is both a unique and authoritative work. |
