Reading Biblical Greek introduces first-year Greek students to the
essential information needed to optimize their grasp of the
fundamentals of the Greek language-no more and no less-enabling
them to read and translate the Greek of the New Testament as soon
as possible. The learning approach in Reading Biblical Greek
revolves around three core elements: grammar, vocabulary, and
reading & translation. Grammar. The grammar consists of
micro-lessons, which break up information in small, digestible
chunks. Each micro-lesson addresses a single point. This
arrangement makes for easy comprehension and review. It also allows
the teacher to pace the material based on its difficulty and
ability of their students. New learning is incremental and
recursive-each new piece builds on and reinforces prior learning.
Lessons are structured in three columns: 1) Introducing new topic;
2) Material to be memorized; and 3) Examples and exercises.
Vocabulary. As an essential complement to grammar, vocabulary is
introduced at strategic points and is arranged first by what the
student has been learning in grammar, and then by frequency. The
vocabulary lists are collated at the back of the book for easy
access. The first 13 vocabulary lists are keyed to Mark 1-4 to help
students to integrate their vocabulary learning with a "real" Greek
text. Reading & Translation. The goal of this grammar is to
enable students to read and translate the Greek of the New
Testament. Thus, the content is structured and tied to a specific
Greek text to enable reading as soon as possible. The student will
have read and translated the whole of Mark 1-4 by the end of the
course. The accompanying Reading Biblical Greek Workbook is a vital
part of the approach. It breaks up the text of Mark 1-4 into
manageable portions and provides vocabulary and grammatical
assistance as required. While Reading Biblical Greek only
introduces students to information that is essential to grasp of
the fundamentals of the Greek language, it is informed by the
latest and best of Greek and linguistic scholarship, enabling
students to move seamlessly to further study.
The Idiom Book was written for high-intermediate/advanced young
adult and adult learners of English. The language used is very
colloquial and is intended to represent the authentic linguistic
expression of native speakers interacting socially in informal
personal and professional contexts. Each lesson features 10 idioms.
The book is divided into 101 lessons, with each lesson having four
sections: - Section A introduces the idioms in the context of an
idiomatic conversation. - Section B presents the same idioms in a
different format, most in the form of written messages. The
messages are gapped. Section C uses a matching exercise to increase
the learning challenge. Section D has the students using the idioms
in a given sentence substituting the idiom for a non-idiomatic
phrase. The topics are varied and interesting. There is a list of
idioms and an answer key available for download at
ProLinguaLearning.com. An optional downloadable audio program for
this book is also available.

Updated and revised with more examples and expanded discussions,
this second edition continues the aim of providing teachers with a
solid understanding of the use and function of grammatical
structures in American English. The book avoids jargon and presents
essential grammatical structures clearly and concisely. Dr. DeCapua
approaches grammar from a descriptive rather than a prescriptive
standpoint, discussing differences between formal and informal
language, and spoken and written English. The text draws examples
from a wide variety of authentic materials to illustrate
grammatical concepts. The many activities throughout the book
engage users in exploring the different elements of grammar and in
considering how these elements work together to form meaning. Users
are encouraged to tap into their own, often subconscious, knowledge
of grammar to consciously apply their knowledge to their own varied
teaching settings. The text also emphasizes the importance of
understanding grammar from the perspective of English language
learners, an approach that allows teachers to better appreciate the
difficulties these learners face. Specific areas of difficulties
for learners of English are highlighted throughout.
In the last part of the twentieth century, the human sciences
witnessed three paradigmatic turns' that made it possible to
comprehend each individual discipline in the light of a unitary
object of study, the text: the pragmatic turn within linguistics,
the linguistic turn within historical and cultural studies, and the
cultural turn within literary studies. Combined with the more
comprehensive nature of the texts studied (the mass media,
postcolonial studies, etc.), reflection on the theoretical approach
is more important today than ever as a means of interdisciplinary
practice across both disciplines and languages. Most of the
contributions in this book were originally presented at a
conference on Disciplines and Interdisciplinarity in Foreign
Language Studies. The conference took place at the University of
Aarhus, Denmark, 19-20 September 2003 and was organised by The
Language and Culture Network. Founded in 2002, the network promotes
interdisciplinary collaboration between the traditional branches of
Foreign Language Studies.
The dearth of suitable introductory texts presents a serious obstacle to the study of the Egyptian language, so this practical grammar answers a longstanding need. Its well-known and highly respected author, a Keeper of the Egyptian and Assyrian Antiquities at the British Museum, has written many other popular Dover books on Egyptology. Contents include lists of frequently used signs and determinatives, a short vocabulary of about 500 words, a series of 31 texts and extracts (with interlinear transliteration and word-for-word translation), and a few untransliterated and untranslated texts (with glossary), to be worked out independently. This is a valuable book for archaeologists, anthropologists, and anyone with a professional or amateur interest in Ancient Egypt. Unabridged republication of the edition published by Kegan Paul, Trench, Truebner, & Co., Ltd., London, 1895.
This collection provides an overview of present-day research on
copulative clauses and copulative verbs. They center on the
classification of copulative clauses, the various meanings and the
diachronic development of copulative verbs, and quasi-copulative
constructions in German and their equivalents in English,
Hungarian, German sign language, Alemmanic dialects, Romance
languages, and old Indo-Germanic languages. The detailed analyses
produce insights into the realization potentials listed for
copulative clauses in one-language grammars.
With its unique month-by-month organisation, this is the most
structured grammar revision and practice book on the market. One
book covers AS and A2, and covers all topics in the Student Book in
the order they are taught. Students can see at a glance what they
have to learn and when. This book provides an ideal way of ensuring
students keep up with the essential grammar they need for AS and A
Level.
This text looks at what all language learners need to know and do
in order to move from their mother tongue into another language.
Part of this is in anticipating and then counteracting some
assumptions that learners can make about other languages. These
assumptions can be revealed by looking at the mistakes pupils can
make. There are many suggestions for activities that should lead
pupils to a better understanding - either implicitly or explicitly
- of the language they are learning. The book starts with getting
pupils accustomed to the sound of language. There is an emphasis on
developing the inner abilities of the mind which are needed to
recall both the sight and sound of the language. The book covers
how much understanding of language in general and of their own
language in particular the pupil should have before they can make
real progress. It also stresses the need for the constant
practising of new patterns of language.
Over the past few decades, the book series Linguistische Arbeiten
[Linguistic Studies], comprising over 500 volumes, has made a
significant contribution to the development of linguistic theory
both in Germany and internationally. The series will continue to
deliver new impulses for research and maintain the central insight
of linguistics that progress can only be made in acquiring new
knowledge about human languages both synchronically and
diachronically by closely combining empirical and theoretical
analyses. To this end, we invite submission of high-quality
linguistic studies from all the central areas of general
linguistics and the linguistics of individual languages which
address topical questions, discuss new data and advance the
development of linguistic theory.
A charming compendium of Latin words and English derivatives,
encompassing over 365 words required for Latin GCSE, one for each
day of the year. Each Latin entry is accompanied by key notes on
grammar, translations and some playful and memorable derivatives. A
concise introduction and a glossary of Latin in common usage
combine to make this a vade-mecum (essential companion) for all
learners of Latin as well as cruciverbalists. The text is
imaginatively punctuated by 20 full-colour illustrations by Amanda
Short.
Susie Dent, bestselling author, broadcaster and word expert, is on
a mission to find light in the deepest, darkest corners of our
language. It takes just a short browse through the dictionary to
spot how it is filled with negative words. But Susie has searched
far and wide to unearth happy and uplifting words and phrases that,
in some cases, are long forgotten, while others have only just been
discovered. Paired with beautiful illustrations, this is the
perfect book to lift you out of your mubble fubbles (a slightly sad
mood), make you grin like a gigglemug (someone who never stops
smiling), and have you feeling forblissed (extremely happy) in no
time. This joyous collection of 100 positive words and their
origins will show readers young and old just how wonderful language
can be - and how you can use your words to make the world a happier
place.
The volume on word formation is the third part of a comprehensive
new grammar of Middle High German. It is the first study to process
and present MHG word formation from the systematic foundation of a
comprehensive structured corpus of MHG manuscripts (1070a "1350).
Thus the volume closes a gap between the approaches to presenting
OHG word formation and the various studies of word formation in
Early New High German. The account of MHG word formation mainly
follows a semantic approach and presents word formation from
semasiological and onomasiological perspectives. The presentation
combines modern linguistic methods with traditional philological
approaches and should be of use both to linguistics and
medievalists from different disciplines.
