"comprehensive, accurate, complete and scholarly, and contains sufficient reading matter to enable the student to handle the language for himself." Oxford Magazine
This work, a companion to Professor Lambton’s Persian Grammar (also available in a Students’ Edition), is intended mainly for the student of contemporary Persian. It will, however, also be a useful handbook for those who wish to read classical Persian literature. The Persian-English and English-Persian sections contain a wide range of the more common words and phrases.
Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary by Conceptual Categories by J. David
Pleins with Jonathan Homrighausen is an innovative study reference
intended for both introductory and advanced students of the Hebrew
language to help them understand and remember vocabulary based on
logical categories of related words. Since our minds acquire and
recall language by making associations between related words it is
only natural that we would study language in this way. By
organizing Hebrew vocabulary into logical categories, as opposed to
frequency, students can quickly begin to familiarize themselves
with entire groups of terms and more readily acquaint themselves
with the ranges of meaning of particular Hebrew words. This
reference tool focuses on nouns in the Old Testament, and includes
over 175 word grouping categories including pottery, ships, birds,
jewelry, seasons, and many more. For each Hebrew term a definition
is given and a reference in the Hebrew Bible appears so readers can
see the word in context. For many words additional lexical
references are indicated where students can look for further study.
Words that hapax legomena (words appearing only once in the Hebrew
Bible) are marked with an "H" and words that are rare and appear
less than 10 times are marked with an "R." Two helpful appendices
equip students for further study, these include 1) a Guide for
Further Reading where recommendations are given for helpful
resources for studying the larger macro categories and 2) Lists of
"cluster verses" where several words in a given category appear
together, giving students the ability to see how these words
function together in context. Biblical Hebrew Vocabulary by
Conceptual Categories is intended to move students beyond rote
memorization to a more dynamic grasp of Hebrew vocabulary,
ultimately equipping them to read with more fluidity and with a
deeper and more intuitive grasp of the biblical text.
This title helps you master French grammar without tedious drills
or obscure technical jargon. Mastering French grammar can be a
daunting challenge. Unfortunately, most references on the subject
only make matters worse by removing French grammar entirely from
any real-world context and presenting it as a collection of
puzzling technical terms and arbitrary rules. In "French Grammar: A
Complete Reference Guide, Second Edition", Professor Daniel J.
Calvez departs from the standard method of indoctrinating learners
into the mysteries of French grammar to provide you with a
systematic, easy-to-understand presentation anchored in real-life
usage. An ideal guide for learners at all levels, "French Grammar"
is the quickest and easiest way to acquire the knowledge and skills
you need to write and speak French with confidence. It avoids
tedious memorization drills typical of most references, focusing
instead on patterns commonly found in contemporary French speech
and literature. A model of clarity and simplicity, it defines
puzzling grammatical jargon in straightforward English, leaving no
room for doubt as to what, for instance, a relative pronoun or
reflexive verb might be. This revised and expanded second edition
of the popular guide to French grammar: lets you learn French
grammar in context, as it's used in everyday speech and writing;
simplifies presentations of difficult structures within a clearly
organized system; and, features loads of helpful at-a-glance
reference lists, tables, and charts. It now includes more than 130
exercises that supplement all topic areas and an answer key.
"French Grammar: A Complete Reference Guide, Second Edition", is
the ultimate reference for anyone grappling with the intricacies of
the French language.
The Greek language has a written history of more than 3,000 years.
While the classical, Hellenistic and modern periods of the language
are well researched, the intermediate stages are much less well
known, but of great interest to those curious to know how a
language changes over time. The geographical area where Greek has
been spoken stretches from the Aegean Islands to the Black Sea and
from Southern Italy and Sicily to the Middle East, largely
corresponding to former territories of the Byzantine Empire and its
successor states. This Grammar draws on a comprehensive corpus of
literary and non-literary texts written in various forms of the
vernacular to document the processes of change between the eleventh
and eighteenth centuries, processes which can be seen as broadly
comparable to the emergence of the Romance languages from Medieval
Latin. Regional and dialectal variation in phonology and morphology
are treated in detail.

Now in its fifth edition, French Grammar in Context presents a
unique and exciting approach to learning grammar. Authentic texts
from a rich variety of sources, literary and journalistic, are used
as the starting point for the illustration and explanation of key
areas of French grammar. Each point is consolidated with a wide
range of written and spoken exercises. Grammar is presented not as
an end in itself, but as a tool essential to enjoying French,
understanding native speakers, and communicating effectively with
them. Literary texts and poems are taken from renowned French
authors such as Albert Camus, Emile Zola, Andre Malraux, Alain
Robbe-Grillet, Stendhal, and Jacques Prevert. News sources include
Liberation, Le Point, Marianne, and Le Monde Diplomatique, in
addition to articles from regional papers such as Ouest-France and
La Voix du Nord. Lifestyle articles are included from magazines
such as Elle. This fifth edition has been updated to include new
texts for Chapters 24 and 25 and two new revision texts. In
addition, this new edition is supported by a revised and extended
companion website that offers a wealth of additional interactive
exercises to practise and reinforce the material covered. French
Grammar in Context is aimed at intermediate and advanced students
