The collective volume brings together the linguistic and didactic
findings on the structure and acquisition of the German writing
system. Based on current research on the German written language it
is shown that its structures can be systematically described in the
core area. The book discusses whether these insights can be used
for didactic conceptions on written language acquisition. Concrete
examples from German instruction illustrate the acquisition
problems and discuss effective learning measures based on learning
by discovery.
The verb is, in any language, the motor of all communication: no
verb, no action. In Greek, verb forms change not only with person,
number, tense, and voice, but in four possible moods as well.
Available now in a special reprint for the North American market,
"The Syntax and Semantics of the Verb in Classical Greek" is an
incomparable resource to students and scholars charged with the
considerable task of untangling the Greek language's many
complexities. With clear, concise instruction, Albert Rijksbaron
shows how the various verb forms contribute to the richness of the
Greek literature as we know it, in this essential guide for both
novices and experienced practitioners. "[This study] belongs in the
library of any Hellenist and any linguist interested in ancient
Greek."--"Classics Newsletter" ("Anzeiger fur die
Altertumswissenschaft") "Every use is described with concision and
clarity."--"Kratylos" "The book offers an example of how the
empirical thoroughness of traditional Classical scholarship can be
brought into contact with general linguistic theory."--"Language"""
This introduction centres mainly around a discussion of the theory,
methods and work-fields of research into grammaticalization and its
application to selected problems of German. The following
theoretical aspects are dealt with: distinctive features of
grammatical signs, the structure of grammatical categories, degrees
of grammaticalization, grammaticalization scales, cognitive and
communicative strategies, grammaticalization cycles, and the links
between grammaticalization theory and research into language
change. Four extensive case studies on the German language revolve
around grammaticalization phenomena in connection with modal verbs,
the passive with bekommen, prepositions, and modal particles.

during her years of coaching clients and speaking to self-help
audiences throughout the world. Part mentor, part friend, she picks
up where Take Time for Your Life and Life Makeovers left off in

wordsmith Jane Smith lays out the timeless and universal science of
language, studied in antiquity in the three parts of logic,
rhetoric and grammar. Learn to persuade, convince, and see through

This volume intervenes in the perennial discussion of tense with an
attempt to broaden its scope by taking a searching look at the
situation in connection with spoken German. As the differences
between written and spoken language cannot be generalized upon,
analysis concentrates on two specific text varieties from each
medium (live football commentary and talk-show versus letter and
review). Following a discussion on the theoretical bearings of the
approach used, broad-ranging corpus analyses are used to identify
the differences displayed by the text varieties in question with
regard to the use of tense and other linguistic devices expressing
temporality.
Research shows that vocabulary is the best support for students’
comprehension of narrative and information texts. Often, vocabulary
instruction focuses on a few target words in specific texts.
However, to understand the many new words in complex texts students
need to know how words work. This book, written by an award-winning
authority on reading instruction, shows teachers how to make small
changes to teach more words and also how words work. Many of these
small changes involve enrichments to existing vocabulary practices,
such as word walls and conversations with students. Each chapter
includes descriptions of teachers’ implementation of small
changes to support big gains in students’ vocabulary. This book,
which has sufficient depth in research and theory for graduate and
undergraduate courses in vocabulary instruction, also offers
practical steps that K–8 teachers can use in any reading program
to help all students grow their vocabulary. Teaching Words and How
They Work shows teachers how to: Identify the most important word
families to teach. Teach students to use opening text as background
knowledge for comprehending the rest of the text. Use word walls
with more purpose and greater student engagement. Select the right
words to teach from new information texts. Better understand
limitations of leveled texts and how to adjust. Use assets and
address challenges to support English learners. Access free mentor
and teacher resources online at textproject.org.
