Geotechnics of Roads 2-Volume Set (Hardcover): Bernardo Caicedo Geotechnics of Roads 2-Volume Set (Hardcover)
Bernardo Caicedo
R9,991 Discovery Miles 99 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At first glance, roads seem like the simplest possible geotechnical structures. However, analysis of these structures runs up against complexities related to the intense stresses experienced by road surfaces, their intense interaction with climate, and the complicated behavior of the materials used in road construction. Modern mechanistic approaches to road design provide the tools capable of developing new technical solutions. However, use of these approaches requires deep understanding of the behavior of constituent materials and their interaction with water and heat which has recently been acquired thanks to advances in geotechnical engineering. The author comprehensively describes and explains these advances and their use in road engineering in the two-volume set Geotechnics of Roads, compiling information that had hitherto only been available in numerous research papers. Geotechnics of Roads: Fundamentals presents stresses and strains in road structures, water and heat migration within and between layers of road materials, and the effects of water on the strength and stiffness of those materials. It includes a deep analysis of soil compaction, one of the most important issues in road construction. Compaction accounts for only a small proportion of a construction budget but its effects on the long-term performance of a road are decisive. In addition, the book describes methodologies for nondestructive road evaluation including analysis of continuous compaction control, a powerful technique for real-time quality control of road structures. Geotechnics of Roads: Advanced Analysis and Modeling develops 23 extended examples that cover most of the theoretical aspects presented in the book Geotechnics of Roads, Fundamentals. Moreover, for most examples, Volume 2 describes algorithms for solving complex problems and provides Matlab (R) scripts for their solution. Consequently, Volume 2 is a natural complement of the book Geotechnics of roads: Fundamentals. This unique set will be of value to civil, structural and geotechnical engineers worldwide.

Alexandre Bayen, Maria Laura Delle Monache, Mauro Garavello, Paola Goatin, Benedetto Piccoli
R974 R653 Discovery Miles 6 530 Save R321 (33%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Conservation and balance laws on networks have been the subject of much research interest given their wide range of applications to real-world processes, particularly traffic flow. This open access monograph is the first to investigate different types of control problems for conservation laws that arise in the modeling of vehicular traffic. Four types of control problems are discussed - boundary, decentralized, distributed, and Lagrangian control - corresponding to, respectively, entrance points and tolls, traffic signals at junctions, variable speed limits, and the use of autonomy and communication. Because conservation laws are strictly connected to Hamilton-Jacobi equations, control of the latter is also considered. An appendix reviewing the general theory of initial-boundary value problems for balance laws is included, as well as an appendix illustrating the main concepts in the theory of conservation laws on networks.

Imre Keseru, Annette Randhahn
R1,272 Discovery Miles 12 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book gathers contributions to the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project INDIMO (Inclusive Digital Mobility Solutions), its sister projects DIGNITY (Digital Transport in and for Society) and TRIPS (Transport Innovation for Persons with Disabilities Needs Satisfaction), which have been focusing on making transport systems inclusive and accessible for all. Digitalization has enabled the emergence and proliferation of novel, 'disruptive' transport and delivery services. These services are often exclusively only available through digital channels such as a smartphone app or website. Yet a substantial segment of the population is at risk of being excluded from these services for a variety of reasons. Therefore, it is strongly necessary to integrate inclusivity and accessibility into the design and operation of mobility services. This book aims at discussing cases of and reasons for digital exclusion in transport. It also investigates the role of participatory and user-centric planning and design methods in making digital mobility more inclusive and accessible. Further, it discusses tools and technologies that could help policy makers to develop digital mobility as a more inclusive and accessible service. This is an open access book.

Intelligent Computing and Communication for the Internet of Vehicles (Paperback, 1st ed. 2023): Mushu Li, Jie Gao, Xuemin... Intelligent Computing and Communication for the Internet of Vehicles (Paperback, 1st ed. 2023)
Mushu Li, Jie Gao, Xuemin (Sherman) Shen, Lian Zhao
R1,248 Discovery Miles 12 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book investigates intelligent network resource management for IoV, with the objective of maximizing the communication and computing performance of vehicle users. Focusing on two representative use cases in IoV, i.e., safety message broadcast and autonomous driving, the authors propose link-layer protocol design and application-layer computing task scheduling to achieve the objective given the unique characteristics and requirements of IoV. In particular, this book illustrates the challenges of resource management for IoV due to network dynamics, such as time-varying traffic intensity and vehicle mobility, and presents intelligent resource management solutions to adapt to the network dynamics. The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) enables vehicle-to-everything connectivity and supports a variety of applications for vehicles on the road. Intelligent resource management is critical for satisfying demanding communication and computing requirements on IoV, while the highly dynamic network environments pose challenges to the design of resource management schemes. This book provides insights into the significance of adaptive resource management in improving the performance of IoV. The customized communication protocol and computing scheduling scheme are designed accordingly by taking the network dynamics information as an integral design factor. Moreover, the decentralized designs of the proposed solutions guarantee low signaling overhead and high scalability. A comprehensive literature review summarizing recent resource management schemes in IoV, followed by the customized design of communication and computing solutions for the two IoV use cases is included which can serve as a useful reference for professionals from both academia and industry in the area of IoV and resource management. Researchers working within this field and computer science and electrical engineering students will find this book useful as well.

Margarita Martinez Diaz
R4,014 Discovery Miles 40 140 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book deals with the estimation of travel time in a very comprehensive and exhaustive way. Travel time information is and will continue to be one key indicator of the quality of service of a road network and a highly valued knowledge for drivers. Moreover, travel times are key inputs for comprehensive traffic management systems. All the above-mentioned aspects are covered in this book. The first chapters expound on the different types of travel time information that traffic management centers work with, their estimation, their utility and their dissemination. They also remark those aspects in which this information should be improved, especially considering future cooperative driving environments.Next, the book introduces and validates two new methodologies designed to improve current travel time information systems, which additionally have a high degree of applicability: since they use data from widely disseminated sources, they could be immediately implemented by many administrations without the need for large investments. Finally, travel times are addressed in the context of dynamic traffic management systems. The evolution of these systems in parallel with technological and communication advancements is thoroughly discussed. Special attention is paid to data analytics and models, including data-driven approaches, aimed at understanding and predicting travel patterns in urban scenarios. Additionally, the role of dynamic origin-to-destination matrices in these schemes is analyzed in detail.

Engineered Cementitious Composites for Electrified Roadway in Megacities - A Comprehensive Study on Functional Performance... Engineered Cementitious Composites for Electrified Roadway in Megacities - A Comprehensive Study on Functional Performance (Paperback, 1st ed. 2022)
Ali Aryo Bawono
R4,010 Discovery Miles 40 100 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book describes the development of an innovative solution for electrified roadway pavements based on engineered cementitious composites, which are exhibiting an extreme tensile strain capacity that is much higher than conventional concrete. This enables the pavement to work without steel reinforcement and to embed a dynamic wireless power transfer technology for charging electric vehicles. At first, the book presents a modified performance-driven design approach to improve the composites to achieve the optimum pavement design in terms of functional and structural performance. It shows that the modified composites can be used to fulfil the safety and comfort factors without neglecting the characteristics of conventional ones. Further, 3D finite element and fluid dynamics models are used to analyse the pavement properties. The validated models can predict the functional performance, including skid resistance, surface water drainage, and noise. In the remaining part of the thesis, an environmentally-friendly photocatalytic function for pavement made of engineered cementitious composites is investigated. In turn, a multi-criteria design analysis is proposed to identify the optimum functional performance of the pavements. All in all, this book reports on a comprehensive approach to design, analyse and optimize engineered cementitious composites for electrified road pavement application. A special emphasis is given on applications in Singapore and other tropical megacities.
