Fang Li, Huahui Li
R2,400 Discovery Miles 24 000 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The rapid development of China's transportation system brings huge challenges to fire safety issues. Fire Protection Engineering Applications for Large Transportation Systems in Chinaanalyzes key fire issues for large transportation systems in rail, airport, tunnels, etc. and offers solutions and best practices for similar projects throughout the world. The first monograph to look at transportation hub fire issues in China looks at architecture features, occupancy and area classification, fire hazard and design difficulties based on local code design. The book then provides case studies to identity the common problems and introduces possible solutions in order to develop a best practice for future design and improvement. The authors worked directly on the case studies provided, which include the Hongqiao airport transportation hub, Beijing and Pudoing airport PBD study, subways in different cities and the high speed train system Cross China. They use their research and investigation to form the theoretical basis for the fire design of urban large transportation hubs and the establishment of corresponding fire codes. The cutting-edge technologies discussed include: Smoke control strategy in complicated multiple function space, assistant evacuation performance based study new technology on fire separation new fire products for smoke detection and intelligent guiding system for evacuation BIM and internet of things used to improve fire management

Transit-Oriented Development - Learning from International Case Studies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Ren Thomas, Luca Bertolini Transit-Oriented Development - Learning from International Case Studies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Ren Thomas, Luca Bertolini
R1,582 Discovery Miles 15 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book uses international case studies to present insights on the policies, actors, and institutions that are critical to successful transit-oriented development (TOD). TOD has many potential benefits for cities and regions, and is considered a critical element in reshaping sprawling car-dependent urban regions into denser regions built around transit corridors. However, it is not a magic bullet solution for metropolitan transportation problems: challenges persist, such as displacement of local residents and regulatory barriers. How has TOD been successfully implemented? How can we integrate the positive aspects of TOD while minimizing its negative impacts? This book presents a study conducted at the University of Amsterdam, exploring 11 international case studies, including a meta-analysis, rough set analysis and policy transfer workshops. The authors discuss the findings and present solutions to persistent challenges to transit-oriented development. Additional literature on eTOD (equitable TOD) strategies, as a fundamental component of planning for regional transportation, shows that these approaches can result in more collaborative processes, community-led development that minimizes the negative impacts of transportation infrastructure. As our Dutch colleagues stated, TOD can be considered a policy concept that can be used as a story to unite people.

Vehicular Networking for Road Safety (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Feng Lyu, Minglu Li, Xuemin Shen Vehicular Networking for Road Safety (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Feng Lyu, Minglu Li, Xuemin Shen
R2,621 Discovery Miles 26 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The topics addressed in this book are crucial for both the academic community and industry, since the vehicular network has become an essential building block for intelligent transportation systems. The systematic principle of this book provides valuable guidance on the deployment and implementation of V2X-enabled road-safety applications. In addition, this book carries out structured technologies from the MAC layer to the link and network layer, which can provide a general introduction for interested readers with a comprehensive understanding of applying vehicular networks in enhancing road safety, and offers a systematized view for researchers and practitioners in the field of vehicular networks to help them optimize and improve the desired vehicular communication systems. Road safety has always been the first priority for daily commuters on the road. Vehicular networks can be an effective solution to enhance road safety, via which vehicles can exchange cooperative awareness messages rapidly, contributing to better situation awareness and maneuvering cooperation. However, with the fast-changing network topology, intermittent wireless link, and dynamic traffic density, it is challenging to achieve satisfying network performance. This book introduces the background of vehicular networks, provides a comprehensive overview of networking techniques in supporting road-safety applications, states the technical motivations per the MAC, link, and network layer, and proposes/designs vehicular networking technologies at the corresponding layer respectively to guarantee low-latency and reliable V2X communications for road-safety applications. By extending the proposed networking technologies to support all types of vehicular services, this book also outlines open issues and research directions in future 5G and beyond vehicular networks.

It presents state-of-the-art methods for processing, managing, detecting and predicting trajectories and important events related to moving entities, together with advanced visual analytics methods, over multiple heterogeneous, voluminous, fluctuating and noisy data streams from moving entities, correlating them with data from archived data sources expressing e.g. entities' characteristics, geographical information, mobility patterns, mobility regulations and intentional data. The book is divided into six parts: Part I discusses the motivation and background of mobility forecasting supported by trajectory-oriented analytics, and includes specific problems and challenges in the aviation (air-traffic management) and the maritime domains. Part II focuses on big data quality assessment and processing, and presents novel technologies suitable for mobility analytics components. Next, Part III describes solutions toward processing and managing big spatio-temporal data, particularly enriching data streams and integrating streamed and archival data to provide coherent views of mobility, and storing of integrated mobility data in large distributed knowledge graphs for efficient query-answering. Part IV focuses on mobility analytics methods exploiting (online) processed, synopsized and enriched data streams as well as (offline) integrated, archived mobility data, and highlights future location and trajectory prediction methods, distinguishing between short-term and more challenging long-term predictions. Part V examines how methods addressing data management, data processing and mobility analytics are integrated in big data architectures with distinctive characteristics compared to other known big data paradigmatic architectures. Lastly, Part VI covers important ethical issues that research on mobility analytics should address. Providing novel approaches and methodologies related to mobility detection and forecasting needs based on big data exploration, processing, storage, and analysis, this book will appeal to computer scientists and stakeholders in various application domains.
