Dynamics of Pavement Structures (Hardcover): Gustav Martincek Dynamics of Pavement Structures (Hardcover)
Gustav Martincek
R15,167 Discovery Miles 151 670 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book presents a rigorous treatment of the fundamental mathematical behaviour of pavement structures under dynamic loading. The subject is of importance in design of economic highway pavements and aircraft runways for increasingly arduous performance requirements. The author and his team have worked for many years on developing dynamic testing methods of road surfaces and materials using vibration techniques with low excitation energy. Their experimental work on test tracks has led to the development and refinement of models of the behaviour of pavement structures, which can be used for practical applications. The book contains many numerical examples of pavement evaluation and design using this approach. The book should be valuable for researchers and graduate students in the field of highway engineering, structural dynamics and soil mechanics, and also for professional highway engineers concerned with dynamic behaviour of pavements.

Transport For Humans - Are We Nearly There Yet? (Paperback): Pete Dyson, Rory Sutherland Transport For Humans - Are We Nearly There Yet? (Paperback)
Pete Dyson, Rory Sutherland
R498 Discovery Miles 4 980 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Engineers plan transport systems, people use them. But the ways in which an engineer measures success - speed, journey time, efficiency - are often not the way that passengers think about a good trip. We are not cargo. We choose how and when to travel, influenced not only by speed and time but by habit, status, comfort, variety - and many other factors that engineering equations don't capture at all. As we near the practical, physical limits of speed, capacity and punctuality, the greatest hope for a brighter future lies in adapting transport to more human wants and needs. Behavioural science has immense potential to improve the design of roads, railways, planes and pavements - as well as the ways in which we use them - but only when we embrace the messier reality of transport for humans. This is the moment. Climate change, the coronavirus pandemic and changing work-life priorities have shaken up long-held assumptions. There is a new way forward. This book maps out how to design transport for humans.

Bhaswati Mondal, Gopa Samanta
R3,586 Discovery Miles 35 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents commuting as a new paradigm in mobility studies in the context of global south. It delves into suburban train commuting in Eastern India. The book interprets commuting not only as a means to attend work but also as a process producing kinetic event-space infused with different mobile practices, which is not determined by their locational fixity, rather can be cognized. It analyses the role of suburban train commuting in the metropolitan expansion of Kolkata, and the transformation of rural space into urban. The significant contribution of the book lies in explaining commuters' experiencescape and the production of spatial fluidity in time capsule through commuting. It also explores the subjective reality of gendered commuting. The book uses a trans-disciplinary research design, blending quantitative and ethnographic research methods. The area selected for the empirical research is the Howrah-Bardhaman Main Railway Line (108 km), the first suburban railway line in Eastern India. Commuters originating from three adjacent districts of Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Howrah took part in this research. Besides the commuters, non-commuting passengers and hawkers in the train were also interviewed to understand the diverse perceptions of the process of commuting. This book may be considered as a reference book for mobility studies, transport studies, urban geography and regional planning.

Michal Suchanek
R4,345 Discovery Miles 43 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This proceedings present current trends in the transport growth. It presents transport solutions both at a micro-level, such as that of a single city or a single company, as well as at a macro-level of a whole transportation system. The transport decisions made by an individual in regards to the transport mode and route, add up to the structure and efficiency of the whole system. Transport systems cannot grow extensively anymore, due to lack of space or the amount of additional costs, so the authors presents new solutions, ones which are innovative and sustainable, while also increasing the efficiency of transport operations. These solutions are analyzed for performance at a scale of individual cities or companies, as well as whole transport systems. The researchers, who are often also practitioners in the field of transport, provide not only the theoretical background for the transport analysis but also empirical data and practical experience.
