Decision-making Strategies for Automated Driving in Urban Environments (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Antonio Artunedo Decision-making Strategies for Automated Driving in Urban Environments (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Antonio Artunedo
R2,660 Discovery Miles 26 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book describes an effective decision-making and planning architecture for enhancing the navigation capabilities of automated vehicles in the presence of non-detailed, open-source maps. The system involves dynamically obtaining road corridors from map information and utilizing a camera-based lane detection system to update and enhance the navigable space in order to address the issues of intrinsic uncertainty and low-fidelity. An efficient and human-like local planner then determines, within a probabilistic framework, a safe motion trajectory, ensuring the continuity of the path curvature and limiting longitudinal and lateral accelerations. LiDAR-based perception is then used to identify the driving scenario, and subsequently re-plan the trajectory, leading in some cases to adjustment of the high-level route to reach the given destination. The method has been validated through extensive theoretical and experimental analyses, which are reported here in detail.

Dynamics of Pavement Structures (Hardcover): Gustav Martincek Dynamics of Pavement Structures (Hardcover)
Gustav Martincek
R14,968 Discovery Miles 149 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a rigorous treatment of the fundamental mathematical behaviour of pavement structures under dynamic loading. The subject is of importance in design of economic highway pavements and aircraft runways for increasingly arduous performance requirements. The author and his team have worked for many years on developing dynamic testing methods of road surfaces and materials using vibration techniques with low excitation energy. Their experimental work on test tracks has led to the development and refinement of models of the behaviour of pavement structures, which can be used for practical applications. The book contains many numerical examples of pavement evaluation and design using this approach. The book should be valuable for researchers and graduate students in the field of highway engineering, structural dynamics and soil mechanics, and also for professional highway engineers concerned with dynamic behaviour of pavements.

Guide to Highway Law for Architects, Engineers, Surveyors and Contractors (Hardcover): R.A O'Hara Guide to Highway Law for Architects, Engineers, Surveyors and Contractors (Hardcover)
R.A O'Hara
R6,745 Discovery Miles 67 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As a consequence of so much construction work being carried out on or near highways, contractors ignore at their peril the law of highways and the influence it has, or should have, on their working methods and practices. Some knowledge of the law relating to highways is essential to anyone involved in the construction process, including the architect, engineer or surveyor advising a client as to what is possible and the contractor actually carrying out the contract works. By avoiding legal language, this book aims to provide practical guidance from maintenance and improvements to activities related to construction work on or near highways.

Rocco Papa, Romano Fistola, Carmela Gargiulo
R3,159 Discovery Miles 31 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book offers an overview of sustainability and urban mobility in the context of urban planning - topics that are of considerable interest in the development of smart cities. Environmental sustainability is universally recognized as a fundamental condition for any urban policy or urban management activity, while mobility is essential for the survival of complex urban systems. The new opportunities offered by innovations in the mobility of people, goods and information, as well as radically changing interactions and activities are transforming cities. Including contributions by urban planning scholars, the book provides an up-to-date picture of the latest studies and innovative policies and practices in Italy, of particular interest due to its spatial, functional and social peculiarities. Sustainability and mobility must form the basis of "smart planning" - a new dimension of urban planning linked to two main innovations: procedural innovation in the management of territorial transformations and the technological innovation of the generation, processing and distribution of data (big data) for the creation of new "digital environments" such as GIS, BIM, models of augmented and mixed reality, useful for describing changes in human settlement in real time.

People may question the hegemony of cars, but reimagining public streets is a major conceptual and technical challenge. Drawing from "new mobilities" and transport studies, Prytherch addresses how streets are structured by policy standards; what it means to have a right to the street; and how a more just street would look-in both theory and practice. He summarizes key traffic statutes, case laws, and engineering manuals, and interprets these in relation to mobility rights and justice. At its core, the book moves beyond criticism to highlight emerging movements which aim to develop more complete and livable streets for everyone.

The Agile Safety Case (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Thor Myklebust, Tor Stalhane The Agile Safety Case (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Thor Myklebust, Tor Stalhane
R1,327 Discovery Miles 13 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The safety case (SC) is one of the railway industry's most important deliverables for creating confidence in their systems. This is the first book on how to write an SC, based on the standard EN 50129:2003. Experience has shown that preparing and understanding an SC is difficult and time consuming, and as such the book provides insights that enhance the training for writing an SC. The book discusses both "regular" safety cases and agile safety cases, which avoid too much documentation, improve communication between the stakeholders, allow quicker approval of the system, and which are important in the light of rapidly changing technology. In addition, it discusses the necessity of frequently updating software due to market requirements, changes in requirements and increased cyber-security threats. After a general introduction to SCs and agile thinking in chapter 1, chapter 2 describes the majority of the roles that are relevant when developing railway-signaling systems. Next, chapter 3 provides information related to the assessment of signaling systems, to certifications based on IEC 61508 and to the authorization of signaling systems. Chapter 4 then explains how an agile safety plan satisfying the requirements given in EN 50126-1:1999 can be developed, while chapter 5 provides a brief introduction to safety case patterns and notations. Lastly, chapter 6 combines all this and describes how an (agile) SC can be developed and what it should include. To ensure that infrastructure managers, suppliers, consultants and others can take full advantage of the agile mind-set, the book includes concrete examples and presents relevant agile practices. Although the scope of the book is limited to signaling systems, the basic foundations for (agile) SCs are clearly described so that they can also be applied in other cases.

Christina Kayoza
R2,031 Discovery Miles 20 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study, conducted in the capital city of Tanzania - Dar es Salaam, investigated the impact of urban infrastructure interaction on movement and safety on arterial roads. By studying characteristics of urban infrastructure interconnections the effects of urban infrastructure interactions on movement and safety were investigated strategies for ensuring sustainable improvement of movement and safety in the road corridors are recommended. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Data are collected through condition survey, questionnaires, interviews, documentary review, and observation using surveillance cameras. The results that infrastructure within the road corridor exist in inevitable interdependencies, which significantly causes deterioration of each other while impairing movement and safety. Impairment is seriously escalated by mismatches in standards and lack of coordination of operators in planning, designing, installation including operational approaches. It is being suggested that in order to attain sustainable improvement of movement and safety, integrated high performance infrastructure has to be adopted; and for enhancing safety, a model has been developed for planners and engineers for evaluating safety compliance for existing and proposed infrastructure within the road corridors. This book will be of inerest to policy makers, engineers, and researchers in transportation engineering.

Bridge Traffic Loading - From Research to Practice (Hardcover): Eugene O'Brien, Andrzej Nowak, Colin Caprani Bridge Traffic Loading - From Research to Practice (Hardcover)
Eugene O'Brien, Andrzej Nowak, Colin Caprani
R3,652 Discovery Miles 36 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There is considerable uncertainty about what level of traffic loading bridges should be designed for. Codes specify notional load models, generally to represent extreme levels of normal traffic, but these are often crude and have inconsistent levels of safety for different load effects. Over the past few decades, increasing quantities of reliable truck weight data has become available and it is now possible to calculate appropriate levels of bridge traffic loading, both for specific bridges and for a road network. Bridge Traffic Loading brings together experts from all over the world to deliver not just the state-of-the-art of vertical loading, but also to provide recommendations of best-practice for all the major challenges in the field - short-span, single and multi-lane bridge loading, dynamic allowance and long-span bridges. It reviews issues that continue to be debated, such as which statistical distribution is most appropriate, whether free-flowing or congested traffic governs and dealing with future traffic growth. Specialist consultants and bridge owners should find this invaluable, as will regulators.
