This book offers a comprehensive introduction to fuzzy methods for solving flow tasks in both transportation and networks. It analyzes the problems of minimum cost and maximum flow finding with fuzzy nonzero lower flow bounds, and describes solutions to minimum cost flow finding in a network with fuzzy arc capacities and transmission costs. After a concise introduction to flow theory and tasks, the book analyzes two important problems. The first is related to determining the maximum volume for cargo transportation in the presence of uncertain network parameters, such as environmental changes, measurement errors and repair work on the roads. These parameters are represented here as fuzzy triangular, trapezoidal numbers and intervals. The second problem concerns static and dynamic flow finding in networks under fuzzy conditions, and an effective method that takes into account the network's transit parameters is presented here. All in all, the book provides readers with a practical reference guide to state-of-the art fuzzy methods for solving flow tasks and offers a valuable resource for all researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of network theory, fuzzy models and decision-making.

Design and Construction of Pavements and Rail Tracks - Geotechnical Aspects and Processed Materials is a compilation of selected contributions produced between 2002 and 2005 by the International Committee TC3 - Geotechnics of Pavements of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), a committee dedicated to gathering current knowledge of geotechnical aspects relating to pavements and rail tracks. The volume presents advanced procedures for laboratory and field materials characterization, including processed materials (non-conventional road construction materials), novel tests for field stiffness evaluation, a pre-standard for roller integrated continuous compaction control and new theories for evaluation of the long term performance of materials, including environmental aspects. These contributions represent the latest developments relating to the design, construction and long term performance of pavements, rail tracks and earth structures, with emphasis on the geotechnical and environmental background.

In the past ten years there was a worldwide trend towards increased use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM's). This trend covers a broad variety of applications ranging both from small diameters for sewers and other utilities to large diameters for double track railway and even three-lane highway tunnels. The response to this has been the development of both hard rock machines in the direction for application in soft ground, and soft ground TBM's to be used in soft rock. Parallel to the technical development of TBM's towards applications for longer tunnels, running through changing geological conditions, there are needs for the development of lining methods. This book describes an effective decision-making and planning architecture for enhancing the navigation capabilities of automated vehicles in the presence of non-detailed, open-source maps. The system involves dynamically obtaining road corridors from map information and utilizing a camera-based lane detection system to update and enhance the navigable space in order to address the issues of intrinsic uncertainty and low-fidelity. An efficient and human-like local planner then determines, within a probabilistic framework, a safe motion trajectory, ensuring the continuity of the path curvature and limiting longitudinal and lateral accelerations. LiDAR-based perception is then used to identify the driving scenario, and subsequently re-plan the trajectory, leading in some cases to adjustment of the high-level route to reach the given destination. The method has been validated through extensive theoretical and experimental analyses, which are reported here in detail.
Roads that are safe in all weathers are a prerequisite of modern society, and large amounts of money have to be spent, especially in winter, by highway authorities to make travel safe. Climatic factors like fog frequency have to be taken into account in planning the route that a road will follow. The operation and maintenance of the road network requires that weather information be taken into account if measures like preventative salting and top dressing are to be successfully carried out. Particularly in the field of winter maintenance of highways a range of new technology has recently become available that is revolutionizing the work of the highway engineer. Ice detection systems, thermal mapping and weather radars are being introduced or considered by many authorities, in the UK, Europe and North America. There is an interest in the performance, reliability and cost-benefits to be gained from employing the new technology.
