This book presents selected contributions to the Pan-American Congress of Naval Engineering, Maritime Transport and Port Engineering (COPINAVAL), which is in its twenty-fifth edition and has become a reference event for the global maritime and port sector, attracting more and more participants from different countries. The 2017 congress was held in Panama City, Panama, bringing together a select group of scientists, entrepreneurs, academics and professionals to discuss the latest technological advances in the maritime industry.
This book is the fourth volume of the proceedings of the 4th GeoShanghai International Conference that was held on May 27 - 30, 2018. This volume, entitled "Transportation Geotechnics and Pavement Engineering", represents the recent advances and technologies in transportation geotechnics and pavement engineering. This book covers a wide range of topics, from transportation geotechnics, to geomechanics at various length scales, to pavement materials and structures. The book offers a unique mix of numerical modeling studies, experimental studies, and case studies from industry. It may be of interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of transportation engineering and pavement engineering. Each of the papers included in this book received at least two positive peer reviews. This volume contains forty of the papers presented at the International Conference on Mathematics in Transport Planning and Control which was held at Cardiff University from 1-3 April, 1998. This was the third such conference run under the auspices of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications, the first being held at the University of Surrey in 1979, and the second at Cardiff University in 1989. In the past ten years there was a worldwide trend towards increased use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM's). This trend covers a broad variety of applications ranging both from small diameters for sewers and other utilities to large diameters for double track railway and even three-lane highway tunnels. The response to this has been the development of both hard rock machines in the direction for application in soft ground, and soft ground TBM's to be used in soft rock. Parallel to the technical development of TBM's towards applications for longer tunnels, running through changing geological conditions, there are needs for the development of lining methods. This book describes an effective decision-making and planning architecture for enhancing the navigation capabilities of automated vehicles in the presence of non-detailed, open-source maps. The system involves dynamically obtaining road corridors from map information and utilizing a camera-based lane detection system to update and enhance the navigable space in order to address the issues of intrinsic uncertainty and low-fidelity. An efficient and human-like local planner then determines, within a probabilistic framework, a safe motion trajectory, ensuring the continuity of the path curvature and limiting longitudinal and lateral accelerations. LiDAR-based perception is then used to identify the driving scenario, and subsequently re-plan the trajectory, leading in some cases to adjustment of the high-level route to reach the given destination. The method has been validated through extensive theoretical and experimental analyses, which are reported here in detail.

This book gathers contributions to the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project INDIMO (Inclusive Digital Mobility Solutions), its sister projects DIGNITY (Digital Transport in and for Society) and TRIPS (Transport Innovation for Persons with Disabilities Needs Satisfaction), which have been focusing on making transport systems inclusive and accessible for all. Digitalization has enabled the emergence and proliferation of novel, 'disruptive' transport and delivery services. These services are often exclusively only available through digital channels such as a smartphone app or website. Yet a substantial segment of the population is at risk of being excluded from these services for a variety of reasons. Therefore, it is strongly necessary to integrate inclusivity and accessibility into the design and operation of mobility services. This book aims at discussing cases of and reasons for digital exclusion in transport. It also investigates the role of participatory and user-centric planning and design methods in making digital mobility more inclusive and accessible. Further, it discusses tools and technologies that could help policy makers to develop digital mobility as a more inclusive and accessible service. This is an open access book.
In recent years, the application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) has steadily expanded, and has become a hot spot of common interest to universities, scientific research institutes, enterprises and institutions in the transportation field. ITS is the product of the deep integration of modern high-tech in the transportation industry, and its development has accompanied that of modern high-tech. ITS is now also becoming part of the Internet of Things (IoT), and is expected to contribute significantly to making our cities smarter and connecting with other infrastructure. Although there are many monographs and textbooks on intelligent transportation, with the advancement of technology and changes in demand, the key technologies of ITS are also rapidly changing. This book chiefly focuses on the main technologies of ITS, examining them from four perspectives: "sense" (perception and management of traffic information, chapters 2 & 3), "transmission" (interaction of traffic information, chapter 4), "prediction" (prediction of traffic states, chapter 6) and "application" (intelligent transportation applications, chapters 6 through 10). Given its scope, the book can be used as a textbook for undergraduates or graduates, as well as a reference book for research institutes and enterprises. This book emphasizes the use of basis traffic engineering principles and state-of-art methodologies to develop functional designs. It largely reflects the authors' own experience in adapting these methodologies to ITS design. This book addresses the reader interested in vehicular traffic phenomena, who have not learned about them before. It presents traffic phenomena like traffic breakdown and the emergence of moving traffic jams by showcasing empirical traffic data measured in real-world traffic. The author explains how these empirical traffic studies have led to the three-phase traffic theory and why this new theory is in conflict with standard traffic theories developed before. Moreover, he presents the reason for the failure of applications of standard traffic theories in real-world traffic and discusses why understanding real traffic has caused a paradigm shift in traffic and transportation science.
