Handbook of Vehicle-Road Interaction (Hardcover): David Cebon Handbook of Vehicle-Road Interaction (Hardcover)
David Cebon
R7,090 Discovery Miles 70 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This handbook dicussess tyre-road contact forces generated by heavy vehicles covering their influence on road surface and bridge response and damage, as well as ways of regulating and improving vehicles so as to minimize road damage.;The main incentive for understanding vehicle-road interaction is the possibility of reducing the road damage caused by heavy vehicles and the very high associated costs. This may be achieved by highway authorities, through improved design and construction of roads; by government agencies, through regulations intended to encourage the use of more "road-friendly" vehicles; or by vehicle engineers, through design of improved vehicle configurations and suspensions, which minimize road damage.;The book provides a unified mechanistic approach to the entire subject, covering vehicle dynamics; dynamic tyre forces; weigh-in-motion; pavement and bridge response; damage mechanisms of paving materials; vehicle-guideway interaction; suspension design to minimize road damage; and assessing road damaging potential of vehicles for regulatory purposes. It includes 25 literature reviews, covering topics from asphalt deformation to weigh-in-motion, and citing over 500 references. In addition, it discusses both the fundamental mechanics of the mechanical and civil engineering systems, as well as practical and implementation issues.

Hanhua Zhu, Mengchong Chen, Yu Zhao, Fusheng Niu
R3,528 R3,268 Discovery Miles 32 680 Save R260 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines how the state of underground structures can be determined with the assistance of force, deformation and energy. It then analyzes mechanized shield methods, the New Austrian tunneling method (NATM) and conventional methods from this new perspective. The book gathers a wealth of cases reflecting the experiences of practitioners and administrators alike. Based on statistical and engineering studies of these cases, as well as lab and field experiments, it develops a stability assessment approach incorporating a stable equilibrium, which enables engineers to keep the structure and surrounding rocks safe as long as the stable equilibrium and deformation compliance are maintained. The book illustrates the implementation of the method in various tunneling contexts, including soil-rock mixed strata, tunneling beneath operating roads, underwater tunnels, and tunnel pit excavation. It offers a valuable guide for researchers, designers and engineers, especially those who are seeking to understand the underlying principles of underground excavation.

Parallel to the technical development of TBM's towards applications for longer tunnels, running through changing geological conditions, there are needs for the development of lining methods. 'TBM Tunnel Trends' an international lecture serie collection, aims to present the latest scientific and practical state of the art of TBM tunnelling, taking into consideration interactions between machinery and lining. 26 international highly recognized papers.

Ethics of Driving Automation - Artificial Agency and Human Values (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Fabio Fossa Ethics of Driving Automation - Artificial Agency and Human Values (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Fabio Fossa
R2,845 Discovery Miles 28 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book offers a systematic and thorough philosophical analysis of the ways in which driving automation crosses path with ethical values. Upon introducing the different forms of driving automation and examining their relation to human autonomy, it provides readers with in-depth reflections on safety, privacy, moral judgment, control, responsibility, sustainability, and other ethical issues. Driving is undoubtedly a moral activity as a human act. Transferring it to artificial agents such as connected and automated vehicles necessarily raises many philosophical questions. When driving is automated, what happens to its ethical dimensions? Could artificial agents accomplish ethical objectives on our behalf, take moral decisions in our place, and drive us into a more ethical transportation future? In doing so, would they be "moral" as we are or in a way that is similar to, but also remarkably different from, our own? And what role is yet to be played by human responsibility and commitment? The book addresses these questions with the aim of stimulating an interdisciplinary dialogue between different stakeholders. They include automotive engineers, computer scientists, and moral philosophers, as well as industry representatives, policymakers, regulators, transportation experts, and the general public. Indeed, connected and automated vehicles will not take the high road for us . We must drive them there.

Towards Innovative Transport Systems - Evolution and Ground-Breaking Developments (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023): Stephan Muller Towards Innovative Transport Systems - Evolution and Ground-Breaking Developments (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Stephan Muller
R2,667 Discovery Miles 26 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book supports companies in the transport sector, political decision-makers, transport engineers, planners and scientists doing fundamental research who are confronted by growing challenges in transport. These challenges arise from a number of powerful socio-technical trends, including: digitalisation, globalisation, urbanisation, and the requirements of individual users and the increased need to reduce environmental impact of transport. Providing the innovations required to cope with these challenges is not a simple matter. Towards Innovative Transport Systems structures and compiles theoretical foundations from evolutionary economics, the sociology of technology and innovation research in a way that provides a broad understanding of innovation processes without demanding prior knowledge. Using the Concept of Transport System Evolution (CTSE), it explains in depth the economics of innovation in the transport sector, thus contextualising processes, drivers and obstacles at work in current practice; among such processes are the changeover to electric mobility, the realization of autonomous cars, the revival of railway by innovations and dealing with disruptive innovations in transport. The CTSE is an approach to making concrete the multi-level perspective for the transport sector introduced by Frank Geels. On the basis of the CTSE, the author proposes principles for a novel innovation policy in transport that can serve the reader as a guide when making strategic decisions.

Intelligent Road Transport Systems - An Introduction to Key Technologies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Yunpeng Wang, Xinping Yan,... Intelligent Road Transport Systems - An Introduction to Key Technologies (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Yunpeng Wang, Xinping Yan, Guangquan Lu, Chaozhong Wu
R4,675 Discovery Miles 46 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In recent years, the application of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) has steadily expanded, and has become a hot spot of common interest to universities, scientific research institutes, enterprises and institutions in the transportation field. ITS is the product of the deep integration of modern high-tech in the transportation industry, and its development has accompanied that of modern high-tech. ITS is now also becoming part of the Internet of Things (IoT), and is expected to contribute significantly to making our cities smarter and connecting with other infrastructure. Although there are many monographs and textbooks on intelligent transportation, with the advancement of technology and changes in demand, the key technologies of ITS are also rapidly changing. This book chiefly focuses on the main technologies of ITS, examining them from four perspectives: "sense" (perception and management of traffic information, chapters 2 & 3), "transmission" (interaction of traffic information, chapter 4), "prediction" (prediction of traffic states, chapter 6) and "application" (intelligent transportation applications, chapters 6 through 10). Given its scope, the book can be used as a textbook for undergraduates or graduates, as well as a reference book for research institutes and enterprises. This book emphasizes the use of basis traffic engineering principles and state-of-art methodologies to develop functional designs. It largely reflects the authors' own experience in adapting these methodologies to ITS design. For example, the book addresses various forms of data collection, models used to predict and evaluate traffic states, comprehensive description in connected vehicles, applications for users and traffic managers, etc. The knowledge gained here will allow designers to estimate the performance differences among alternatives and gauge their potential benefits for functional design purposes. To gain the most from the book, readers should be somewhat familiar with the field of traffic engineering and interested in ITS.
