Information Technology Law (Paperback, 5th edition): Uta Kohl, Andrew Charlesworth Information Technology Law (Paperback, 5th edition)
Uta Kohl, Andrew Charlesworth
R1,788 Discovery Miles 17 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The fifth edition of Information Technology Law continues to be dedicated to a detailed analysis of and commentary on the latest developments within this burgeoning field of law. It provides an essential read for all those interested in the interface between law and technology and the effect of new technological developments on the law. The contents have been restructured and the reordering of the chapters provides a coherent flow to the subject matter. Criminal law issues are now dealt with in two separate chapters to enable a more focused approach to content crime. The new edition contains both a significant amount of incremental change as well as substantial new material and, where possible, case studies have been used to illustrate significant issues. In particular, new additions include: * Social media and the criminal law; * The impact of the decision in Google Spain and the 'right to be forgotten'; * The Schrems case and the demise of the Safe Harbour agreement; * The judicial reassessment of the proportionality of ICT surveillance powers within the UK and EU post the Madrid bombings; * The expansion of the ICANN gTLDs and the redesigned domain name registration and dispute resolution processes.

Science, Entertainment and Television Documentary (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Vincent Campbell Science, Entertainment and Television Documentary (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Vincent Campbell
R3,741 Discovery Miles 37 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The shift from traditional documentary to "factual entertainment" television has been the subject of much debate and criticism, particularly with regard to the representation of science. New types of factual programming that combine documentary techniques with those of entertainment formats (such as drama, game-shows and reality TV) have come in for strident criticism. Often featuring spectacular visual effects produced by Computer Generated Imagery these programmes blur the boundaries between mainstream science and popular beliefs. Through close analysis of programmes across a range of sciences, this book explores these issues to see if criticisms of such hybrid programmes as representing the "rotting carcass of science TV" really are valid. Campbell considers if in fact; when considered in relation to the principles, practices and communication strategies of different sciences; these shows can be seen to offer more complex and rich representations that construct sciences as objects of wonder, awe and the sublime.

Interdisciplinary Knowledge Organization (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Rick Szostak, Claudio Gnoli, Maria Lopez-Huertas Interdisciplinary Knowledge Organization (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Rick Szostak, Claudio Gnoli, Maria Lopez-Huertas
R3,485 Discovery Miles 34 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book proposes a novel approach to classification, discusses its myriad advantages, and outlines how such an approach to classification can best be pursued. It encourages a collaborative effort toward the detailed development of such a classification. This book is motivated by the increased importance of interdisciplinary scholarship in the academy, and the widely perceived shortcomings of existing knowledge organization schemes in serving interdisciplinary scholarship. It is designed for scholars of classification research, knowledge organization, the digital environment, and interdisciplinarity itself. The approach recommended blends a general classification with domain-specific classification practices. The book reaches a set of very strong conclusions: -Existing classification systems serve interdisciplinary research and teaching poorly. -A novel approach to classification, grounded in the phenomena studied rather than disciplines, would serve interdisciplinary scholarship much better. It would also have advantages for disciplinary scholarship. The productivity of scholarship would thus be increased. -This novel approach is entirely feasible. Various concerns that might be raised can each be addressed. The broad outlines of what a new classification would look like are developed. -This new approach might serve as a complement to or a substitute for existing classification systems. -Domain analysis can and should be employed in the pursuit of a general classification. This will be particularly important with respect to interdisciplinary domains. -Though the impetus for this novel approach comes from interdisciplinarity, it is also better suited to the needs of the Semantic Web, and a digital environment more generally. Though the primary focus of the book is on classification systems, most chapters also address how the analysis could be extended to thesauri and ontologies. The possibility of a universal thesaurus is explored. The classification proposed has many of the advantages sought in ontologies for the Semantic Web. The book is therefore of interest to scholars working in these areas as well.

Theories of Informetrics and Scholarly Communication (Hardcover, Digital original): Cassidy R. Sugimoto Theories of Informetrics and Scholarly Communication (Hardcover, Digital original)
Cassidy R. Sugimoto
R4,042 Discovery Miles 40 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Scientometrics have become an essential element in the practice and evaluation of science and research, including both the evaluation of individuals and national assessment exercises. Yet, researchers and practitioners in this field have lacked clear theories to guide their work. As early as 1981, then doctoral student Blaise Cronin published "The need for a theory of citing" -a call to arms for the fledgling scientometric community to produce foundational theories upon which the work of the field could be based. More than three decades later, the time has come to reach out the field again and ask how they have responded to this call. This book compiles the foundational theories that guide informetrics and scholarly communication research. It is a much needed compilation by leading scholars in the field that gathers together the theories that guide our understanding of authorship, citing, and impact.

Edward D. Garten, Delmus E. Williams
R3,634 Discovery Miles 36 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This monograph offers writing that is both professional and academic. Volume 18 continues to be characterized by a focused eclecticism, informed by theory and reflection, and stretching the boundaries of practice. Among the 11 contributions here are forward-thinking pieces on professional stress resulting from the impact of virtual libraries, an integrated approach to the development of an information resources strategic plan, an international perspective on quality assurance in library support of distance learning, and a research study that offers a methodology to determine and measure gender-based salary disparities in academic libraries. Additionally, this volume includes papers presented at a symposium at the University of Michigan in honour of the career of Richard Dougherty, one of America's most well-regarded library administrators. These papers note some of the obstacles and challenges that those working in today's academic libraries face in their attempts to clear the way for fresh visions of library leadership suited for the years ahead.

Bichitra: The Making of an Online Tagore Variorum (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Sukanta Chaudhuri Bichitra: The Making of an Online Tagore Variorum (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Sukanta Chaudhuri
R2,290 Discovery Miles 22 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book documents the creation of the Bichitra Online Tagore Variorum, a publicly accessible database of Rabindranath Tagore's complete works in Bengali and English totaling some 140,000 pages of primary material. Chapters cover innovative aspects of the site, all replicable in other projects: a hyperbibliography; a search engine and hyperconcordance working across the database; and a unique collation program comparing variant texts at three levels. There are also chapters on the special problems of processing manuscripts, and on planning the website. Early chapters take readers through the history of the project, an overview of Tagore's works, and the Bengali writing system with the challenges of adapting it to electronic form. The name Bichitra, meaning "various" in Bengali, alludes both to the great variety of Tagore's works and to their various stages of composition. Beyond their literary excellence, they are notable for their sheer quantity, the number of variant forms of a great many items, and their afterlife in translation, often the poet's own. Seldom if ever has the same writer revised his material and recast it across genres on such a scale. Tagore won the Nobel Prize in 1913. By its value-added presentation of this range of material, Bichitra can be a model for future databases covering an author's complete works or other major corpus of texts. It offers vastly expanded access to Tagore's writings, and enables new kinds of research including computational text analysis. The "book of the website" shows in technical and human terms how researchers with interests in art, literature and technology can collaborate on cultural informatics projects.

It provides a opportunity to assess whether the construction and design of the building has indeed met the library's and users' requirements and how effectively the building functions.

Library User Metaphors and Services - How Librarians look at their Users (Hardcover, Digital original): Carl Gustav Johannsen Library User Metaphors and Services - How Librarians look at their Users (Hardcover, Digital original)
Carl Gustav Johannsen
R4,416 Discovery Miles 44 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How do library professionals talk about and refer to library users, and how is this significant? In recent decades, the library profession has conceived of users in at least five different ways, viewing them alternatively as citizens, clients, customers, guests, or partners. This book argues that these user metaphors crucially inform librarians' interactions with the public, and, by extension, determine the quality and content of the services received. The ultimate aim of this book is to provide library professionals with insights and tools for avoiding common pitfalls associated with false or professionally inadequate conceptions of library users.

Historic Newspapers in the Digital Age - Search All About It! (Hardcover): Paul Gooding Historic Newspapers in the Digital Age - Search All About It! (Hardcover)
Paul Gooding
R4,591 Discovery Miles 45 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years, cultural institutions and commercial providers have created extensive digitised newspaper collections. This book asks the timely question: what can the large-scale digitisation of newspapers tell us about the wider cultural phenomenon of mass digitisation? The unique form and materiality of newspapers, and their grounding in a particular time and place, provide challenges for researchers and digital resource creators alike. At the same time, the wider context in which digitisation of cultural heritage occurs shapes the impact of digital resources in ways which fall short of the grand ambitions of the wider theoretical discourse. Drawing on case studies from leading digitised newspaper collections, the book aims to provide a bridge between the theory and practice of how these digitised collections are being used. Beginning with an exploration of the hyperbolic nature of technological discourses, the author explores how web interfaces, funding models and the realities of contemporary user behaviour contrast with the hyperbolic discourse surrounding mass digitisation. This book will be of particular interest to those who want to investigate how user studies can inform our understanding of technological phenomena, including digital resource creators, information professionals, students and researchers in universities, libraries, museums and archives.

Advances in Library Administration and Organization (Hardcover): Edward D. Garten, Delmus E. Williams Advances in Library Administration and Organization (Hardcover)
Edward D. Garten, Delmus E. Williams
R3,520 Discovery Miles 35 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume addresses an eclectic mix of topics that adapt theoretical concepts relating to the management of libraries to stretch the boundary of practice. The nine contributions include a definition of knowledge management and an outline of a curriculum designed to train knowledge managers developed in Australia, a case study of the application of change management at SMU, and a discussion of how ebooks fit into collection management policies. It also includes two pieces on research on the Internet, one that focuses on student use of this tool and the other on the ethical implications of Internet research. Other contributions include a study of how effective managers work and a discussion of quality assessment in libraries and in American higher education. The volume concludes with discussions of consortia that are developing in Ohio and in Taiwan. While each of these articles are quite different in focus, each deals with an issue that we who are charged with leading libraries must address, and each contributes to the discussions that are likely to clarify our visions of where libraries are going and how we might adapt them to meet the future needs of our clientele. As a result, this volume should take its place beside others in the series as a significant contribution to the literature of management within librarianship.

How does information (documents, pieces of knowledge) have to be organized in order to be retrievable? What role does metadata play? What are search engines on the Web, or in corporate intranets, and how do they work? How must one deal with natural language processing and tools of knowledge organization, such as thesauri, classification systems, and ontologies? How useful is social tagging? How valuable are intellectually created abstracts and automatically prepared extracts? Which empirical methods allow for user research and which for the evaluation of information systems? This Handbook is a basic work of information science, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of information retrieval and knowledge representation. It addresses readers from all professions and scientific disciplines, but particularly scholars, practitioners and students of Information Science, Library Science, Computer Science, Information Management, and Knowledge Management.
