Sport, Leisure and Tourism is a practical guide to finding information, encouraging readers to make active use of libraries in their research. This book provides readers with an understanding of the major information search tools which are available. It is a starting point in the search for information which offers advice and indicates some of the major sources which are available. Sport, Leisure and Tourism Information Sources is aimed primarily at final year undergraduate and postgraduate students who are preparing a dissertation in the area of sport and leisure studies who need access to information sources. As in the previous volume, the predominant theme of Volume 26 of
Advances in Librarianship is the advance of technology in
libraries. This volume focuses, in eight of its ten papers, on how
libraries have been changed by electronic communication of
information and knowledge. From the approach of SPARC (the
Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) that is
creating new scholarship venues electronically, to an in-depth
treatment of the limitations of the Digital Millennium Copyright
Act for electronic publishing, the volume examines how technology
is affecting libraries. Use of technology has resulted in new
collaboration and cooperation by libraries and museums in the USA
in providing electronic access to the American cultural heritage
and technology has allowed a similar approach in Sweden for
combining services of all libraries to offer electronic access to
their cultural resources. Another technology paper presents a
comprehensive examination of steps required to involve Humanities
faculty and the Library collaboratively in producing, distributing,
and accessing scholarship in machine-readable form. Two more
technology papers by authors from the de fact American national
library, the Library of Congress (LC), examine issues of importance
to libraries in the Digital Age. The first paper from LC looks at
the development of MARC 21 in providing electronic access to
collections, and how it is being increasingly used internationally.
Finally, the second paper describes the newest experiment in
reference taking place at LC, the Collaborative Digital Reference
Service (CDRS) that brings reference and information services to
patrons via the Internet wherever they live.
Formerly, a library was viewed as a place for information storage
and information was viewed as simply bits of data. Furthermore,
many wielded information as a tool of power, in that those who had
more information had more authority. It is becoming increasingly
clear that shared collective knowledge of an organization is of far
greater value than that of each individual's privately held data.
In view of the librarian's changing profession, it has also become

The promotion of library services in European countries requires co-ordinated use of new technologies and co-operation. To implement this the European Commission has devised a plan of action for libraries. This plan and questions relating to the use of new technologies in libraries were presented at this European conference. The Vinland Map, dated to about A.D. 1440 - at least fifty years before Columbus landed in the Americas - is a unique map of the world that shows an outline of the northeast American coast and a legend describing its discovery in about 1000 by Leif Eiriksson, the Norseman from Greenland. The map was published by Yale University Press in 1965 and generated an enormous amount of debate. Chemical analysis of the ink later suggested that the map might be a forgery, but recent appraisals of both scientific and humanist evidence argue that it is indeed authentic. Now, on the thirtieth anniversary of its original publication, here is this classic of historical cartography in a new edition. It reprints unaltered the original text on the Vinland Map and an account of Friar John of Plano Carpini's mission to the Mongols from 1245 to 1247 (the Tartar Relation), with which the map had at some stage been bound. To this have been added a new introduction by George D. Painter, sole survivor of the original team of editors, who discusses the verification of the map's authenticity; a new essay by Wilcomb E. Washburn, director of the Smithsonian's American Studies Program, on the map's provenance and scientific testing; and a new discussion of the map's compositional and structural aspects by Thomas A. Cahill and Bruce H. Kusko, of the Crocker Historical and Archaeological Projects at the University of California, Davis. There is also an account by the rare-book dealer Laurence C.
