When my father was first diagnosed with Alzheimer's, I read
everything I could get my hands on about the disease. Right off the
bat I could tell if it was written by a physician, pharmaceutical
company or even a nursing home. When caregivers are looking for
help, the last thing they need is medical text so complex they
already forgot what they read by the time it's laid back down. This
is what got me started on writing about common sense caregiving,
which turned into a weekly column and now into this book. My goal
is to make this book as "caregiver friendly" as possible. Sharing
my triumphs and hardships from my plus three-thousand day campaign
in dealing with the disease of Alzheimer's and the world of
memory-impairment.
What should you do when you know that the solution to a problem is
right in front of you, but you just can't see it? Working through
problems needn't be hard work - in fact, trying too hard can trap
you in rigid thought patterns and blind you to unexpected but
brilliant solutions. This brain-training puzzle book will help you
to see and think in new ways, and allow you to channel your
thoughts in a fresh direction. Includes an extended introduction
with pointers on how to think outside the box, as well as How to
Think tips to improve your problem-solving skills as you work
through 50 thought-provoking puzzles.
As you age, you may find yourself worrying about your memory. Where
did I put those car keys? What time was my appointment? What was
her name again? With more than 41 million Americans over the age of
65 in the United States, the question becomes how much (or,
perhaps, what type) of memory loss is to be expected as one gets
older and what should trigger a visit to the doctor. Seven Steps to
Managing Your Memory addresses these key concerns and more, such
as... * What are the signs that suggest your memory problems are
more than just part of normal aging? * Is it normal to have
concerns about your memory? * What are the markers of mild
cognitive impairment, dementia, Alzheimer's, and other
neurodegenerative diseases? * How should you convey your memory
concerns to your doctor? * What can your doctor do to evaluate your
memory? * Which healthcare professional(s) should you see? * What
medicines, alternative therapies, diets, and exercises are
available to improve your memory? * Can crossword puzzles, computer
brain-training games, memory aids, and strategies help strengthen
your memory? * What other resources are available when dealing with
memory loss? Seven Steps to Managing Your Memory is written in an
easy-to-read yet comprehensive style, featuring clinical vignettes
and character-based stories that provide real-life examples of how
to successfully manage age-related memory loss.
This book provides an interdisciplinary focus on music, memory, and
ageing by examining how they intersect outside of a formal
therapeutic context or framework and by offering a
counter-narrative to age as decline. It contributes to the
development of qualitative research methodologies by utilizing and
reflecting on methods for studying music, memory, and ageing across
diverse and interconnected contexts. Using the notion of
inheritance to trouble its core themes of music, memory, ageing,
and methodology, it examines different ways in which the concept of
inheritance is understood but also how it commonly refers to the
practice of passing on, and the connections this establishes across
time and space. It confronts the ageist discourses that associate
popular music predominantly with youth and that focus narrowly, and
almost exclusively, on music's therapeutic function for older
adults. By presenting research which examines various intersections
of music and ageing outside of a therapeutic context or framework,
the book brings a much-needed intervention.
Robert Collier (1885-1950) was an author of self-help and
metaphysical books. "The Secret of the Ages" sold over 300,000
copies during his life. He wrote about the practical psychology of
abundance, desire, faith, visualization, confident action, and
becoming your best.
An exciting new science-driven guide to protecting your mind from
decline. 'Fascinating' Daily Mail Throughout our lives, we are
always looking for ways to keep our mind sharp and effortlessly
productive. In this book, globetrotting neurosurgeon Dr Sanjay
Gupta offers insights from top scientists all over the world, whose
cutting edge research can help you heighten and protect brain
function and maintain cognitive health at any age. Keep Sharp
debunks common myths about ageing and cognitive decline, explores
whether there's a 'best' diet or exercise regimen for the brain,
and explains whether it's healthier to play video games that test
memory and processing speed, or to engage in more social
interaction. Discover what we can learn from 'super-brained' people
who are in their eighties and nineties but showing no signs of
slowing down - and whether there are truly any benefits to drugs,
supplements and vitamins. Dr Gupta also addresses brain disease,
particularly Alzheimer's, answers all your questions about signs
and symptoms, and shows you both how to ward against it and how to
care for a partner in cognitive decline. The book also provides
readers with a personalized twelve-week programme featuring
practical strategies to strengthen your brain every day. Keep Sharp
is the only owner's manual you'll need to keep your brain young and
healthy at any age!
According to the Limca books of record 2003, Chowdhury memorised a
thoroughly shuffled pack of playing cards in 1 minute, 54 second.
Since the last few decades of the 20th century many psychologists
have encouraged the view that constantly analysing and expressing
our emotions is a good thing. Dr Susan Nolen-Hoeksema challenges
this assumption in this book on conquering negative thinking.
Encouraged by a fast-paced, self analytical culture, women often
spend countless hours dwelling on negative ideas, feelings and
experiences. Dr Nolen-Hoeksema calls this "overthinking" and her
research shows that an increasing number of women are doing this
too much and too often, hindering their ability to effectively deal
with problems and lead a satisfying life. She discusses: what
"overthinking" is and what causes it; why women are particularly
prone to negative thinking; techniques for overcoming overthinking
and finding real solutions to problems; and problem areas which
cause us to think negatively - and what to do about them.

Design Innovation and Integration is more than just a toolkit; it
is a guidebook for the industry leaders of tomorrow, providing a
holistic understanding of the approaches, practices and tools
required to integrate design strategically within an organisation.
Novel solutions are required to meet complex problems, yet how to
make these solutions a reality is rarely addressed. This book
expands on existing design toolkits to provide an understanding of
the principles and methods that underpin such tools and align them
with organisational strategy. The aim is not to equip readers with
a stocktake list of design tools, but to assist them to learn how
to apply, adapt and re-mould tools to best suit their needs. It
also demonstrates the more complex process of design integration,
highlighting common pitfalls and opportunities. Drawing on over 10
years of independent research, authors Straker, Wrigley, and Nusem
share experiences and outcomes (along with personal repartees) from
their research, teaching and pet projects. The two key parts of
this book, Design Innovation and Design Integration, equip the
reader with an understanding of the theory encompassing these two
areas. This book can be leveraged by readers seeking to develop
their own design approach and to implement design in their
organisation. If you are looking to grow your influence and create
an environment in which design innovation can flourish, then this
book is for you.
