This book will be an essential resource for clinicians seeking a clear, concise resource to identifying, treating, and managing celiac disease in both adults and children.

ADHD as a Model of Brain-Behavior Relationships (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Leonard F. Koziol, Deborah Ely Budding, Dana Chidekel ADHD as a Model of Brain-Behavior Relationships (Paperback, 2013 ed.)

R2,075 Discovery Miles 20 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

ADHD as a Model of Brain-Behavior Relationships Leonard F. Koziol, Deborah Ely Budding, and Dana Chidekel Series Title: Springer Briefs in Neuroscience Subseries: The Vertically Organized Brain in Theory and Practice It's been a basic neurological given: the brain does our thinking, and has evolved to do the thinking, as controlled by the neocortex. In this schema, all dysfunction can be traced to problems in the brain's lateral interactions. But in scientific reality, is this really true? Challenging this traditional cortico-centric view is a body of research emphasizing the role of the structures that control movement-the brain's vertical organization-in behavioral symptoms. Using a well-known, widely studied disorder as a test case, ADHD as a Model of Brain-Behavior Relationships offers an innovative framework for integrating neuroscience and behavioral research to refine diagnostic process and advance the understanding of disorders.Identifying a profound disconnect between current neuropsychological testing and the way the brain actually functions, this revision of the paradigm critiques the DSM and ICD in terms of the connectedness of brain structures regarding cognition and behavior. The authors argue for a large-scale brain network approach to pathology instead of the localizing that is so common historically, and for an alternate set of diagnostic criteria proposed by the NIMH. Included in the coverage: * The diagnosis of ADHD: history and context.* ADHD and neuropsychological nomenclature* Research Domain Criteria: a dimensional approach to evaluating disorder* The development of motor skills, executive function, and a relation to ADHD* The role of the cerebellum in cognition, emotion, motivation, and dysfunction* How large-scale brain networks interact Heralding a more accurate future of assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders, ADHD as a Model of Brain-Behavior Relationships represents a major step forward for neuropsychologists, child psychologists, and psychiatrists, or any related profession interested in a neuroscientific understanding of brain function.

The PMLD Ambiguity - Articulating the Life-Worlds of Children with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (Paperback): Ben... The PMLD Ambiguity - Articulating the Life-Worlds of Children with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (Paperback)
Ben Simmons, Debbie Watson
R986 Discovery Miles 9 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book challenges the ways we experience, think about, and interact with children described as having profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Contrary to received wisdom, the book starts from the premise that traditional psychological approaches operating in the PMLD field are overly reductive and constrain our abilities to listen to and learn from children with PMLD. This in turn runs the risk of maintaining exclusionary practices such as segregated education, where such practices are predicated upon the notion that some children are too disabled to participate in mainstream life.To address the situation the authors explore new terrain in three areas: theory, research and practice. The authors draw from phenomenological notions of embodied consciousness and introduce how this gives rise to novel ways of understanding the agency of children with PMLD. This critique leads to examination of interpersonal methodology as a means to access the experiences of children with PMLD, which in turn culminates in a research project examining how inclusive education could support learning for a young boy with PMLD. What becomes apparent through this story is that children with PMLD engage with the world in ways far more complex than existing approaches can take account of.

Integrating Neuropsychological and Psychological Evaluations - Assessing and Helping the Whole Child (Paperback): Daniel K.... Integrating Neuropsychological and Psychological Evaluations - Assessing and Helping the Whole Child (Paperback)
Daniel K. Reinstein, Dawn E. Burau
R1,630 Discovery Miles 16 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Integrating Neuropsychological and Psychological Assessments is a resource for neuropsychologists, psychologists, teachers and parents who wish to address both the neurologically- and emotionally-based difficulties with which their children are presenting. In addition to a thorough description of neuropsychological and psychological assessment tools, this book also provides professionals with a unified approach to using the results from assessments to understand and integrate cognitive, behavioral, social and emotional functioning in school-age children. It posits that to educate and treat children who are struggling in school due to unique cognitive or emotional vulnerabilities, the whole child must be considered to decipher their needs and implement interventions. Cultivating a therapeutic relationship that integrates the emotional and relational functioning of the child enhances both their learning and ability to successfully navigate the world.

Childhood Epilepsy - Language, Learning and Behavioural Complications (Paperback): William B. Svoboda Childhood Epilepsy - Language, Learning and Behavioural Complications (Paperback)
William B. Svoboda
R2,318 Discovery Miles 23 180 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

More than half the numbers of children with epilepsy have interrelated language, learning and/or behavior complications. By adulthood, these problems can interfere with socialization and employment. The seizures may be controlled but the developmental distortions can continue to present problems for health and education systems and carers. In this comprehensive and fully referenced book, William Svoboda distils a lifetime of clinical experience with childhood epilepsy into three areas which address each of the main areas of difficulty. In each he looks at why the problems arise and assesses diagnostic and remediative approaches. The focus is on the whole care of the child rather than on diagnosis, classification and medication alone. Clinicians, mental health practitioners, educators and speech-language pathologists will find this book invaluable.

Growth Hormone Related Diseases and Therapy - A Molecular and Physiological Perspective for the Clinician (Paperback, 2011... Growth Hormone Related Diseases and Therapy - A Molecular and Physiological Perspective for the Clinician (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Ken Ho
R6,186 Discovery Miles 61 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The molecular era ushered in the cloning of the growth hormone (GH) gene and the production of unlimited amounts of GH through recombinant technology. The continuing momentum of research from basic science to clinical evaluation has brought unprecedented advances to the understanding of GH biology for the clinical endocrinologist. Growth Hormone Related Diseases and Therapy: A Molecular and Physiological Perspective for the Clinician distills all the new information of relevance to the endocrinologist over the last 20 years by offering five sections: physiology, molecular genetics, GH deficiency, acromegaly and pharmacotherapy. The first section on physiology focuses on GH action.

A review on the structure and function of the GH receptor is followed by a perspective on the regulatory role of ghrelin on GH secretion. The second section on genetics covers pituitary function and adenomas, including new and fascinating information on familial pituitary adenomas, their genotype and phenotype. The adult GH deficiency section spans the epidemiology and diagnosis of GH deficiency with a strong reminder for the clinician that the transition period represents a critical time of somatic maturation, which continues for years after cessation of liner growth. The section on acromegaly focuses on management, giving practical guides to the value of GH and IGF-1 measurements, the place of somatostatin analogues and of radiotherapy while reminding the reader as to why evaluating quality of life is an important part of management. Finally, the section on GH pharmacology takes the reader through innovative developments of long-acting GH formulations with some products on the threshold of clinical use. This section provides a balanced evidence based review of the effects of GH supplementation in aging and in sports where recent data indicates an enhancing effect on a selective aspect of performance. Growth Hormone Related Diseases and Therapy: A Molecular and Physiological Perspective for the Clinician integrates a wealth of information and will prove an invaluable reference for pediatric endocrinologists, adult endocrinologists, endocrine scientists and internists interested in the human biology of GH."

Theory and Research in Behavioral Pediatrics - Volume 2 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984): Hiram E.... Theory and Research in Behavioral Pediatrics - Volume 2 (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984)
Hiram E. Fitzgerald, Barry M. Lester, Michael W. Yogman
R2,790 Discovery Miles 27 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Volume I of Theory and Research in Behavioral Pediatrics focused on issues of early human development, with special emphasis given to assessment of the preterm infant and to factors inftuencing the organization of the caregiver infant relationship. Chapters in Volume 2 cover a broader range of topics and encompass a wider age span. Chapter I provides a historical review of the relationship between developmental psychology and pediatrics. The authors, Barbara R. Tinsley and Ross D. Parke, discuss differences between behavioral pediatrics and pediatric psychology and note that interdiscipli nary collaboration in research and application has increased steadily in re cent years. However, if similar collaborative efforts are to occur in education and training of pediatricians and developmental psychologists, it will be necessary to determine just what each discipline hopes to gain from such collaborative efforts. Tinsley and Parke report the results of anational survey designed to determine the areas of developmental psychology that pediatricians perceive to be of potential benefit to them in their delivery of pediatric care. Results of the survey suggest that there are many ways in which developmental psychology could be in corpora ted into the pediatric curriculum. In many respects, Chapter 2 sets the stage for the remaining chapters. Nancy A. Carlson and Thomas Z.

Pediatric Rheumatology for the Practitioner (Paperback, 2nd ed. 1993. Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 1993): Jerry C... Pediatric Rheumatology for the Practitioner (Paperback, 2nd ed. 1993. Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 1993)
Jerry C Jacobs
R1,661 Discovery Miles 16 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the founders of the field of pediatric rheumatology, Dr. Jerry C. Jacobs, comprehensively discusses the care of children with rheumatic diseases and musculoskeletal disorders in this clinical reference. The author has completely revised and updated the text and references. A significant portion of the book is devoted to differential diagnosis; in fact, one of the book's strongest points is the detailed, illustrated description of the physical examination of joints in children. From the reviews of the first edition: "The section on the differential diagnosis of arthritis is the most comprehensive treatise of the subject that I have seen." #New England Journal of Medicine#1 "This is a book that one can pick up and read sections of and go back to again and again, and as such should be readily available wherever people are caring for children with joint complaints." #British Medical Journal#2 "Photographs, both clinical and pathological, radiographs, tables and graphs appear on almost every page and the layout is good so that the text is attractive as well as readable." #British Journal of Rheumatology#3 "...deals with all the facets of rheumatism or arthritis likely to be met with in the clinic. ...Above all the book is user friendly: very comprehensive index sections facilitate access to material, and the provision of many lists and summary tables helps in the location and clarification of information. ...The whole results in a book that is pleasant and surprisingly easy to read ...it would form an ideal library copy, both for selective reading and reference, and should be read by all paediatric rheumatologists." #The Lancet#4

Principles of Clinical Practice - An Introductory Textbook (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991): Mark B.... Principles of Clinical Practice - An Introductory Textbook (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1991)
Mark B. Mengel
R2,864 Discovery Miles 28 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As we move into the 21st century it is becoming increasingly difficult to offer appropriate introductory clinical experiences for medical students. Many schools offer clinical experiences in the first year of medical school, when the learner has little background in the traditions and origins of the doctor-patient interaction. Others begin this process in the second year, after a professional language base has been established, but concise educational materials are scarce that integrate the meaning of the privileged clinical encounter with the process and content of interviewing and examining patients. In the tertiary hospitals, where most medical schools are based, the educators must provide an orienta tion to the clinical encounter, an intensely personal experience, in the midst of glittering technological marvels that easily distract both the novice physician and the wizened teacher. Understanding the context and historical basis for the privilege of interviewing and examining another person about intimate matters relating to health and disease is essential to this process. Considering these factors, this textbook is written to assist medical educators and medical students involved in early clinical training. As the demand for "high-tech" medicine has accelerated, so has the public concern over the loss of "high-touch" or compassionate, humane interactions with physicians. Physicians are perceived as more concerned with readouts from machines and fiberoptic views of the patient than with understanding and car ing about the people we have labeled as patients."

Reproductive Immunology (Paperback, 1997): Lars B. Olding Reproductive Immunology (Paperback, 1997)
Lars B. Olding
R2,773 Discovery Miles 27 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Discrimination of self from nonself is the major function of the immune system and understanding the mechanism(s) involved a main employer of immunologists. Hence, the age-old puzzle of why a fetus that contains a panel of major histocompatibility (MHC) antigens derived from its mother and its father is not rejected (spontaneously aborted) by lymphocytes from its mother who should theoretically recognize foreign MHC molecules from the father has remained of great interest. This dilemma has enticed immunologists and developmental biologists for many years. This volume was created to present the information currently on hand in this subject to the scientific public. The guest editor, Professor Lars Olding, has a long and distinguished history of contributions in this field, having been one of the main propo nents of the argument that lymphocytes from the fetus play an active role in this process by suppressing lymphocytes from the mother from proliferating and thereby acting as killer cells. His work has defined the phenomenon and identified suppressor molecules (factors) involved in the process. In a different but related chapter, Margareta Unander extends such observations to the clinical study of women with repeated "habitual" mIS carriages."

Human Lactation 3 - The Effects of Human Milk on the Recipient Infant (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Human Lactation 3 - The Effects of Human Milk on the Recipient Infant (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1987)
A.S. Goldman, S.A. Atkinson, L.A. Hanson
R4,263 Discovery Miles 42 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Four years ago the National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) brought together a group of scientists to Belmont, Maryland to examine the status of human milk banking. During those deliberations, the idea was generated to organize a series of research conferences concerning human lactation and the composition and biological effects of human milk. The first one, organized by Robert G. Jensen from the University of Connecticut and Margaret C. Neville from the University of Colorado, dealt with methodologic issues. An additional meeting to explore the effects of maternal and environmental factors upon human lactation and the composition of human milk was organized by Margit Hamosh from Georgetown University and me, and was held in January, 1986 in Oaxaca, Mexico. Those meetings provided the foundation for the design of the present conference, 'The Effects of Human Milk Upon the Recipient Infant'. In addition to a grant from the NICHD, the conference was generously supported by Milupa AG from the Federal Republic of Germany; Wyeth Limited and Mead Johnson of Canada; and Ross Laboratories, Heinz USA, the Mead Johnson Nutritional Group, Wyeth International Limited, Gerber Products Company, the La Leche League International, Glaxo Incorporated and Sandoz Pharmaceutical Corporation from the United States.

Neonatal Jaundice - New Trends in Phototherapy (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984): Firmino F.... Neonatal Jaundice - New Trends in Phototherapy (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984)
Firmino F. Rubaltelli
R2,825 Discovery Miles 28 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hyperbilirubinemia of the neonate and the related risk of brain damage with conseguent important alterations in motor development, particularly in sick preterm babies, remains a major problem in nurseries throughout the world. Since its introduction in the 1950's phototherapy has been used for reducing serum bilirubin concentrations in the newborn with hyperbilirubinemia; however, only recently the photoprocesses invoked by light on various substrates including bilirubin have been clari fied in sufficient detail. Light treatment actually exemplifies the intimate relationship between the clinical and basic sciences: the better understanding of the mechanism of phototherapy as a result of investigations initiated in the laboratory has been extended to the bedside as new types of lamps or new schedules of treatment. As a consequence, phototherapy of hyperbilirubinemia has emerged as a well-established branch of photomedicine, based on molecular photo biology, scientific method, and creative use of physics and sophis ticated electrooptical capabilities. The collaboration and exchange of information between workers in different basic and clinical di sciplines is likely to stimulate a further optimization of photo therapy. The purpose of this monograph is to discuss some of the new aspects of bilirubin metabolism and phototherapeutic treatment. Bilirubin conjugation in the fetal and early neonatal life, the mechanism of bilirubin entry into the brain, the measurements of bilirubin concentration in the skin and serum bilirubin binding capacity are discussed by a number of prominent neonatologists."
