Surrogate Terrorists - Iran's Formula for Success (Paperback): Stephen Kramer Surrogate Terrorists - Iran's Formula for Success (Paperback)
Stephen Kramer
R1,032 Discovery Miles 10 320 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Today, National Security is embroiled in the unknown, the uncertain, the unseen, and the unexpected. In the twenty-first century, failed states, rogue states, ethnic militias, and radical extremists produce transnational actors involved in global conflicts. During the 1980s, Iran used Hizballah as a surrogate terrorist organization. This was an excellent example of the transition from the traditional state-centered paradigm ordered around conventional strength between rival states to a new type of warfare practiced today. The model created from this research shows many of the conditions, activities, and events necessary to create a state-sponsored terrorist group and provides the reader with indicators that such a group is being formed. Surrogate Terrorists explores some of the analytic methodology used to understand terrorism, insurgency, asymmetric warfare, and state practice of denial and deception. It closes with examples of state-sponsored surrogate terrorist groups' centers of gravity that can be exploited.

Peacebuilding in Northern Ireland, Israel and South Africa - Transition, Transformation and Reconciliation (Hardcover): C.... Peacebuilding in Northern Ireland, Israel and South Africa - Transition, Transformation and Reconciliation (Hardcover)
C. Knox, P. Quirk
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Political accommodation in Northern Ireland, Israel and South Africa at the macro level may not, by itself, be sufficient to achieve the long term goals of building peace and reconciliation. This book uses Lederach's peace building model to explore issues which may provide a basis for transformation and a lasting peace in the three countries.

The Costs of Conflict - Prevention and Cure in the Global Arena (Hardcover, New): Michael E. Brown, Richard N. Rosecrance The Costs of Conflict - Prevention and Cure in the Global Arena (Hardcover, New)

R3,876 Discovery Miles 38 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

When it comes to conflict resolution, is an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure? Leading scholars lay out an analytical and methodological framework for evaluating this question, and case studies on global hotspots from Bosnia to Somalia, Rwanda, Cambodia, and El Salvador (among others) put it to the test.

Two Stars for Peace - The Case for Using U.S. Statehood to Achieve Lasting Peace in the Middle East (Hardcover): Martine... Two Stars for Peace - The Case for Using U.S. Statehood to Achieve Lasting Peace in the Middle East (Hardcover)
Martine Rothblatt
R626 R570 Discovery Miles 5 700 Save R56 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Two Stars for Peace" makes a compelling case for merging Israel and Palestine into the United States. Dozens of possible objections are addressed using clear logic, historical precedent, and current statistics. This bold new strategy is also shown to be essential to removing the kindling wood of terrorism from Middle East politics.

"Two Stars for Peace" is the natural successor to "The Jewish State, " Theodore Herzl's hundred-year old booklet that created Zionism. Author Martine Rothblatt persuasively demonstrates that "two-state" solutions, such as the current Middle East Roadmap, are doomed to failure, as is unbridled Zionism. However, there is a "two-star" solution that is consistent with the true spirit of Zionism, as well as with complete satisfaction of Palestinian aspirations. America is asked to rise to one of its greatest challenges by welcoming "Two Stars for Peace."

How to Prevent Genocide - A Guide for Policymakers, Scholars, and the Concerned Citizen (Hardcover, New): John G. Heidenrich How to Prevent Genocide - A Guide for Policymakers, Scholars, and the Concerned Citizen (Hardcover, New)
John G. Heidenrich
R2,794 Discovery Miles 27 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Genocide--the deliberate destruction, usually through mass murder, of an ethnic, racial or religious group--is the ultimate crime against humanity. Drawing upon a wide variety of disciplines, this study assesses ways to prevent this crime. While most books about genocide focus on the history of a particular event, such as the Holocaust, or compare case studies to derive empirical theories, this book outlines many practical aspects of genocide prevention.

Heidenrich covers a broad spectrum of expert opinions, from Stanley Hoffmann to Henry Kissinger, as well as political opinions regarding genocide that range from Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton. Topics include international law, humanitarian intervention, early warning measures, and the effectiveness of such methods as diplomacy, economic pressure, and nonviolent resistance. Preventing genocide in a tense socio-political environment is no easy task, but such prevention is easier and more cost-effective than trying to put an end to genocide once it is already occurring.

The Power of Memory and Violence in Central America (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Rachel Hatcher The Power of Memory and Violence in Central America (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Rachel Hatcher
R2,875 Discovery Miles 28 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the power of words in post-Peace El Salvador and Guatemala-their violent and equally liberating power. The volume explores the entire post-Peace Accords era in both Central American countries. In "post-conflict" settings, denying or forgetting the repressive past and its many victims does violence to those victims, while remembering and giving testimony about the past can be cathartic for survivors, relatives, and even for perpetrators. This project will appeal to readers interested in development, societies in transition, global peace studies, and Central American studies.

Conflict Resolution in Asia - Mediation and Other Cultural Models (Hardcover): Stephanie P. Stobbe Conflict Resolution in Asia - Mediation and Other Cultural Models (Hardcover)
Stephanie P. Stobbe; Foreword by Paul Redekop; Contributions by Nadja Alexander, Dale Bagshaw, Bruce E. Barnes, …
R2,781 Discovery Miles 27 810 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Conflict Resolution in Asia: Mediation and Other Cultural Models is an exploration of human interaction, conflict, and conflict resolution in the incredibly diverse region that consists of South, East, and Southeast Asia. It examines how traditional, indigenous, and culturally based conflict resolution processes interact with more formal legal systems to build infrastructures that address conflicts at the interpersonal to international levels in ways that maintain social harmony. This book provides insight into situations where unique cultures come together to create a larger cultural identity, and how constructive and appropriate conflict resolution systems can work every day to establish positive relationships and overall peace in these complex communities. It demonstrates the importance of culture in addressing conflict and conflict resolution, and validates the significance of culturally appropriate processes in building and sustaining peace. From Southeast Asia, a survey of Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam highlights their rich cultures and conflict resolution processes. From East Asia, Mainland China and Hong Kong show the history of traditional models and the incorporation of mediation within a more formal legal system. Finally, a section on South Asia examines customary methods of dispute resolution working alongside a judiciary structure in India. These nine countries represent very different cultural groups with complex national histories, and varying degrees of influence from Western powers. Using select Asian nations as case studies of conflict resolution systems, this edited book examines the power of mediation and other cultural conflict resolution models as a tool for addressing conflicts and social justice.

Ecology of War & Peace - Counting Costs of Conflict (Paperback): Tom H. Hastings Ecology of War & Peace - Counting Costs of Conflict (Paperback)
Tom H. Hastings
R1,522 Discovery Miles 15 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How do mobilization for war and the actual war effort affect the environment? How do ecological conditions encourage war? What are possible, non-violent solutions to the ecological- conflict dynamic? Ecology of War & Peace attempts to answer these questions in readable prose with an unapologetic bias toward non-violence.

Peacebuilding through Women's Community Development - Wee Women's Work in Northern Ireland (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017):... Peacebuilding through Women's Community Development - Wee Women's Work in Northern Ireland (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Amanda E. Donahoe
R3,475 Discovery Miles 34 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book explores the gendered history of the Troubles, the rise of the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition, and the role of community development as a new field in Northern Ireland. Nearly twenty years after the Belfast or Good Friday Agreement that ended the Troubles in Northern Ireland, tensions persist and society is still deeply divided. The book addresses the ways in which women navigate these tensions and contribute to peacebuilding through community development, described dismissively by many in Northern Ireland as the work of "wee women." Women navigate this gendered space to build peace strategically through "Wee Women's Work." The author focuses in particular on the Women's Sector and draws on feminist theory to examine the distinction between formal and informal politics.

Music and Coexistence - A Journey across the World in Search of Musicians Making a Difference (Hardcover): Osseily Hanna Music and Coexistence - A Journey across the World in Search of Musicians Making a Difference (Hardcover)
Osseily Hanna
R1,349 Discovery Miles 13 490 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Music and Coexistence: A Journey across the World in Search of Musicians Making a Difference is both study and travelogue, as author Osseily Hanna explores the courageous work of musicians who compose and perform with their ostensible enemies or in extraordinary social situations. He documents the political and economic constraints faced by musicians, from the wall that encloses a refugee camp in Jerusalem, to the tensions among KFOR and Carabinieri peacekeepers who keep Serbs and Kosovar Albanians apart, to the cultural and linguistic suppression that afflicts minority communities in Turkey. A multilingual musician, Hanna examines the lives of the individuals and groups at the forefront of the effort to bridge ethnic, cultural, and religious divisions. Featuring musicians from thirteen different countries and territories across five continents, Hanna's story includes a remarkable cadre of performers, such as the musicians who comprise Heartbeat, a group of Israeli and Palestinian youth, who compose, record, and perform music together; the Albino musicians of Tanzania, who regularly combat persecution by local shamans; the multiracial and thriving samba musicians in Sao Paolo; and a former child soldier from Cambodia who seeks to revive traditional music following the genocide in the 1970s. With photos taken by the author during his travels, this work is a unique contribution for those interested in world music and peace studies. This unique and remarkable work will open the eyes and the hearts of every musician and music lover who recognizes music as a universal language.

Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity (Hardcover): Mohamed Rabie Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity (Hardcover)
Mohamed Rabie
R2,776 Discovery Miles 27 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book follows an approach that combines the viewpoints of both the realists and the idealists in dealing with the issues of conflict and peace. The ideas, models, and peace processes it proposes take into consideration the imperatives of real life without abandoning the dreams of a more peaceful and just world. The shared homeland model, as developed here, provides hope that ethnic conflict can be resolved in a manner that satisfies a group's need for recognition and cultural particularism, as well as its need for economic development, security, and regional activity. The book also defines and integrates steps of political conflict resolution into one theory that produces one of the first textbooks on the subject.

Peter Wallensteen
R3,507 Discovery Miles 35 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a broad overview of what peace research is all about by an author who has been involved in the field for more than half a century. Among other things it gives a unique review of how peace research emerged in Sweden as the author was a key actor in the most crucial events during this formative period. The book also portrays how the discipline has grown from an initial focus on "alternatives to war" to the comprehensive study of the many dimensions of a "lasting and positive peace". The author's own work covers causes of war, sanctions, conflict resolution, conflict data, mediation, and quality peace. They demonstrate the range of topics that have to be understood for a peace with quality. This is exemplified by some of the author's writings specifically selected for this volume plus a few ones original to it. Some accounts of the author's involvements in actual peace processes in the 1990s are also included. This publication offers a substantial contribution to understanding the evolution of peace research as a field and is an important reading for scholars, policy makers, journalists, students and any aspiring peace researcher as well as for the public at large. * Peter Wallensteen is a global pioneer of peace research due to his involvement in the creation of the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University - a major center in the field. He served as Head of Department from 1972 to 1999. * Peter Wallensteen set up and directed the well-known Uppsala Conflict Data Program, UCDP, the global resource for the study of armed conflicts and peace negotiations, 1978-2015. * Peter Wallensteen was the first holder of the Dag Hammarskjoeld Chair in Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, 1985-2012. * He was also the first holder of the position as the Richard G. Starmann Sr. Research Professor of Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame, USA, 2006-2018.

Religion, Civilization, and Civil War - 1945 through the New Millennium (Paperback, New edition): Jonathan Fox Religion, Civilization, and Civil War - 1945 through the New Millennium (Paperback, New edition)
Jonathan Fox
R1,190 Discovery Miles 11 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In Religion, Civilization, and Civil War author Jonathan Fox carves out a new space of research and interrogation in conflict studies. As a preeminent observer of religious trends on domestic conflicts, Fox utilizes new statistical analysis in the Minorities at Risk (MAR) dataset - which tracks several hundred politically active ethnic groups across the globe, to examine the impact of religion and religious practice on rebellion, protest, discrimination, and international intervention. Fox also employs the State Failure (SF) dataset, which tracks internal wars and failed governances. Fox expertly uses this information to analyze ethnic wars, mass killings, and civil wars between 1948 and 2001. Covering over five decades, this study provides the most comprehensive and detailed empirical analysis of the impact of religion and civilization on domestic conflict to date and will become a critical resource for both international relations and political science scholars. Like his first book, Ethnoreligious Conflict in the Late 20th Century: A General Theory, which was touted as closing gaps in the concept of ethnoreligious conflict, Religion, Civilization, and Civil War provides the data to substantiate, expand, and transform the way scholars understand global conflict since World War Two.

How Do I Save My Honor? - War, Moral Integrity, and Principled Resignation (Paperback): William F. Felice How Do I Save My Honor? - War, Moral Integrity, and Principled Resignation (Paperback)
William F. Felice
R1,262 Discovery Miles 12 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How Do I Save My Honor? is a powerful exploration of individual moral responsibility in a time of war. When people decide that the actions of their government have violated basic norms of ethics and justice, what are they to do? Are there degrees of moral responsibility that public officials, soldiers, and private citizens bear for unethical actions of their leaders and government? William F. Felice considers these central ethical questions through the compelling stories of individuals in the U.S. and British government and military who struggled to protect their moral integrity during the Iraq war and occupation. Some came to the difficult conclusion that resignation from their post was necessary to maintain their responsibility to the truth and to uphold their honor. Others decided to work from within to try to correct what they perceived as misguided policies. Examining the struggles of these contemporary men and women, as well as of historical figures facing similar dilemmas, William Felice weighs the profound difficulties of overcoming the intense pressures of misguided loyalty, patriotism, and groupthink that predominate during war.

Through a Glass Darkly - Looking at Conflict Prevention, Management, and Termination (Hardcover, New): Stephen J Cimbala Through a Glass Darkly - Looking at Conflict Prevention, Management, and Termination (Hardcover, New)
Stephen J Cimbala
R2,772 Discovery Miles 27 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cimbala shows why the prevention, management, and concluding of war all require an understanding of the subjective aspects of decision making as well as the hardware and tactics of military operations. A review of past cases of U.S. security policy decision making and a preview of some future problems are combined to distill important lessons about coping with conflict in the post-Cold War world.

These lessons include the awareness that some conflicts are unnecessarily provoked or prolonged on account of the gap between the perspectives and experiences of civilian policy makers and the views of the armed forces leadership. Another important lesson is that, in resolving or managing conflicts, perceptions, and expectations of leaders filter out alternatives that might have led to preferred solutions had they been attempted in good time. Of particular interest to policy makers, military professionals, and researchers involved with contemporary military issues.

The Forgotten Years of Kurdish Nationalism in Iran (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Abbas Vali The Forgotten Years of Kurdish Nationalism in Iran (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Abbas Vali
R2,260 Discovery Miles 22 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the forgotten years of Kurdish nationalism in Iran, from the fall of the Kurdish republic to the advent of the Iranian revolution. An original and path-breaking investigation of the period, it sheds light not only on the historical specificity of the phenomenon of nationalism in exile, but also on the political processes and practices defining the development of Kurdish nationalism in the post-revolutionary era. Although nationalist landmarks such as the Kurdish republic in 1946 and the resurgence of the movement in the revolutionary conjuncture of 1978-79 have attracted the attention of historians and social scientists in recent years, little is known about the three decades of Kurdish nationalism in exile between these two events. This analysis draws on contemporary poststructuralist theory to question the concept of the minority in democratic and constitutional theory, arguing that it is an effect of the discursive linkage between sovereign power and the dominant ethnic-linguistic identity in the nation-state. This text will appeal to a wide academic audience ranging from the fields of Kurdish, Iranian and Middle East Studies to ethnicity, nationalism, government, and political science.

IRA Man - Talking with the Rebels (Hardcover, New): Douglass McFerran IRA Man - Talking with the Rebels (Hardcover, New)
Douglass McFerran
R2,221 Discovery Miles 22 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the compelling story of a former Jesuit who traveled to Ireland in order to better understand the IRA, its widespread support among Irish Catholics, and the country's continuing civil unrest. Author Douglass McFerran, an American, made many key contacts in Northern Ireland, enabling him to gain unprecedented access to republican groups. He met with members of the Orange Lodge and the heavily armed Royal Ulster Constabulary; he had tea with leaders of Sinn Fein; and he participated in the annual Internment March on the streets of Belfast. In this book he provides a history of the conflict in Northern Ireland and goes beyond the propaganda on both sides to understand the causes of today's violence and explore what would be necessary to end it.

McFerran wrote this book at the suggestion of individuals within the Irish republican community. During its writing he had the cooperation of several Sinn Fein leaders and past and present members of the IRA. McFerran came to believe that the violent situation in Northern Ireland can best be explained by considering the manner in which the English government, through genocide and civil repression, attempted to eliminate Irish resistance to English rule. The failure of the Anglo-Irish War to achieve a united Irish government brought on a republican movement with a political expression in Sinn Fein and a military expression in the guerrilla activities of the Irish Republican Army. The continued failure of the English government to negotiate with Irish nationalists can be attributed to a desire to maintain the political support of predominantly Protestant unionists, who since 1913 have pledged armed resistance to any effort to allow a Catholic-led government to rule over them.

Gandhi and Bin Laden - Religion at the Extremes (Paperback, New): James L Rowell Gandhi and Bin Laden - Religion at the Extremes (Paperback, New)
James L Rowell
R1,119 Discovery Miles 11 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

No two figures could seem further removed than Mohandas K. Gandhi and Osama bin Laden. Gandhi advocated an inclusive religious perspective, and believed that the highest ideals in religion led to the path of absolute nonviolence. In contrast, Bin Laden has concocted a militant and exclusive interpretation of Islam, and tried to justify some of the most barbarous acts of terrorism witnessed at the turn of the century. Can both men be equally 'religious' figures? As leaders of movements of political protest, do they have any points of similarity? Moreover, how can the religious philosophy of nonviolence respond to its nemesis, which takes life so easily and casually? These and other important questions are explored in this work that examines the lives and ideas of Mohandas K. Gandhi and Osama bin Laden, as well as that of Abdul Ghaffar Khan, a refreshing, nonviolent representative of Islam.

Managing Transitional Justice - Expectations of International Criminal Trials (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Ray Nickson, Alice... Managing Transitional Justice - Expectations of International Criminal Trials (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Ray Nickson, Alice Neikirk
R3,618 Discovery Miles 36 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines expectations for justice in transitional societies and how stakeholder expectations are ignored, marginalized and co-opted by institutions in the wake of conflict. Focusing on institutions that have adopted international criminal trials, the authors encourage us to ask not only whether expectations are appropriate to institutions, but whether institutions are appropriate expectations. Drawing upon a wide variety of sources, this volume demonstrates that a profound 'expectation gap' - the gap between anticipated and likely outcomes of justice - exists in transitional justice systems and processes. This 'expectation gap' requires that the justice goals of local communities be managed accordingly. In proposing a perspective of enhanced engagement, the authors argue for greater compromise in the expectations, goals and design of transitional justice. This book will constitute an important and valuable resource for students of scholars of transitional justice as well as practitioners, particularly with regards to the design of transitional justice responses.

Renee Jeffery
R4,910 Discovery Miles 49 100 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book examines the practice of transitional justice in the Solomon Islands from the period of the 'The Tensions' to the present. In late 1998, the Solomon Islands were plunged into a period of violent civil conflict precipitated by a complex web of grievances, injustices, ethnic tensions, and economic insecurities. This conflict dragged on until the middle of 2003, leaving an estimated 200 people dead and more than 20 000 displaced from their homes. In the time that has elapsed since the end of The Tensions, numerous-at times incompatible-approaches to transitional justice have been implemented in the Solomon Islands. The contributors to this volume examine how key global trends and debates about transitional justice were played out in the Solomon Islands, how its key mechanisms were adapted to meet the specific demands of post-conflict justice in this local context, and how well its practices and processes fulfilled their perceived functions.
