Timpani Tone and the Interpretation of Baroque and Classical Music
explores the nature, production, and evolution of timpani tone and
provides insights into how to interpret the music of J. S. Bach,
Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. In drawing on 31 years of experience,
Steven L. Schweizer focuses on the components of timpani tone and
methods for producing it. In so doing, he discusses the importance
of timpani bowl type; mallets; playing style; physical gestures;
choice of drums; mallet grip; legato, marcato, and staccato
strokes; playing different parts of the timpano head; and
psychological openness to the music in effectively shaping and
coloring timpani parts.

This work examines the spread of the steelpan art form within U.S. music education, specifically in schools and universities. This research includes 'family trees' that illustrate the impact of various programs on the spread of the art form and includes information on one of the earliest U.S. school steel band programs in the concluding case study chapter. The work includes numerous resources for steel band directors and music educators interested in this topic.

"What singles this book out is the sheer diversity of instruments covered this is a very welcome book. It is fair to say that the science of percussion instruments would not have advanced anywhere near so far without the tireless enthusiasm and passion of Rossing and his students."Nature, 2001"It forms a very nice survey work on an entire class of musical instruments I recommend it to anyone interested in acoustics and the physics of musical instruments."American Journal of Physics, Sept 2001

In 1942, drummer Viola Smith sent shock waves through the jazz world by claiming in Down Beat magazine that “hep girls” could sit in on any jam session and hold their own. In Women Drummers: A History from Rock and Jazz to Blues and Country, Angela Smith takes Viola at her word, offering a comprehensive look at the world of professional drumming and the women who had the courage and chops to break the barriers of this all-too-male field. Combining archival research with personal interviews of more than fifty female drummers representing more than eight decades in music history, Smith paints a vivid picture of their struggles to overcome discrimination—not only as professional musicians but in other parts of their lives. Women Drummers outlines the evolution of female drumming from pre-biblical times when women held important leadership roles to their silencing by the church during the Middle Ages to spearheading the fight for women’s rights in the modern era. The stories and personal accounts of female drummers who bucked tradition and societal norms are told against the backdrop of the times in which they performed and the genres they represented, from rock and jazz to blues and country. Although women have proven time and time again that they can more than hold their own against their male counterparts, female drummers not only remain a minority, but their contributions have been obscured by the traditional chauvinistic attitudes in the music business and gender stereotypes that surround the drum itself as a “male” instrument. Women Drummers takes a major step forward in undoing this misconception by acknowledging the talent, contribution, and growing power of women drummers in today’s music environment.

years ago. This text presents an effective method of dealing with
the mastery of drum set coordination by breaking it down into four
sections: 1) Ride Cymbal - Right hand; 2) Snare Drum - Left foot;
3) Bass Drum - Right foot; 4) High hat - Left foot.

Talent, energy, dedication, discipline, passion, innovation, education, drive, mind, body, spirit, vision, honor, truth, and drums make the man: Kenny Aronoff. Voted by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the greatest drummers of all time, Aronoff is arguably the most sought-after recording and touring beat master ever. Ignited by the Beatles' appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, Aronoff's passion for drumming fervently grew and carried him from the kit in his childhood living room in the Berkshires to Bernstein at Tanglewood to Mellencamp, Etheridge, Forgerty, Smashing Pumpkins, the Rolling Stones, the Beatles-his heroes-and beyond. But none of this would have been possible without his fierce work ethic and unique approach to drumming-an integration of all parts of his being, along with meticulous attention to note-for-note detail, feel, and what the song needs. Both a leader and a team player in the mission to realize a greater good-an unforgettable recording, a riveting show-Aronoff brings it every time. His tale of what is possible with unrelenting dedication to one's bliss is an inspiration to all. In addition to his work as a world-famous recording and touring drummer, Aronoff finds time to be a dedicated teacher and has shared his expertise with students all over the world, teaching clinics for Tama and Zildjian. Featuring rare photos, testimonials from major artists and from those who know him best, a chronology of live performances, a discography, and a foreword by Neil Peart, this book is the story of one of the greatest musicians of all time.
In Modern Etudes and Studies for the Total Percussionist, band director and percussionist Chris Colaneri lays out a comprehensive system of total percussion education. The lessons are gleaned from interviews, research, and the nearly two decades he has spent directing middle school band and percussion ensembles. Where the first edition of the book addressed total percussion education for the seventh-grade student and included simple audio examples and practice tracks, this expanded second edition meets needs of sixth- through eighth-grade percussion students, helping them develop intermediate skills for future participation in a high school or extracurricular band setting. Music examples throughout are carefully sized for easy reading, and students will find more information about equipment they should own, world percussion techniques, and famous percussionists. Developed with the practical needs of percussion teachers in mind, Modern Etudes has been extensively classroom tested and provides key teaching aids that will be welcomed by every band director. These include a curriculum guide and practice assignment sheets for all three grades; practice tips; and exercises and etudes for snare, mallet, set, and timpani. Recordings and practice tracks are available on the book's companion website.
