from Tchaikovsky's original score. It is Christmas Eve at Clara's
house. Scents of ginger, chocolate and peppermint waft through the
air. Clara's parents are having a party, and her little brother
Fritz is decorating the Christmas tree. Clara's godfather, a
toymaker, arrives with gifts, including a very special one for her
- a wooden nutcracker carved in the shape of a little man. After
Fritz breaks it, the children are sent to bed. The story follows
Clara in her dreams as she battles and defeats a mouse king, then
travels with her nutcracker-turned-prince to the Land of Sweets
where she watches its enchanting inhabitants perform beautiful
dances. As you and your little one journey through the magical
scenes, you will press the buttons to hear 10 excerpts from the

excerpts and, for each of them, read a discussion of the
instruments, rhythms and musical techniques that make them so
powerful. A glossary defines musical terms. The Story Orchestra
series brings classical music to life for children through
gorgeously illustrated retellings of classic ballet, opera and

melodies themselves with the sound of a real grand piano. Also
available from the Story Orchestra series: The Magic Flute, I Can
Play (vol 1), Carnival of the Animals, Swan Lake, The Sleeping
Beauty and Four Seasons in One Day. Manufacturer's note: please
pull the white tab out of the back of the book before use. Sound
buttons require a firm push in exact location to work, which may be

Over the last two decades drama pedagogy has helped to lay the
foundations for a new teaching and learning culture, one that
accentuates physicality and centres on performative experience.
Signs of this 'performative turn' in education are especially
strong in the field of foreign/second language teaching. This
volume introduces scholars, language teachers, student teachers and
drama practitioners to the concept of a performative foreign
language didactics. Approaching the subject from a wide variety of
contexts, the contributors explore the extent to which performative
approaches, emphasising the role of the body as a learning medium,
can achieve deep intercultural learning. Drama activities such as
improvisation, hot seating and tableaux are shown to create rich
opportunities for intercultural encounters that transport students
beyond the parameters of conventional language, literature and
culture education.

Scores of women feel excluded from Shakespeare Studies because the
sound of this field (whether it is academics giving papers at
conferences or actors sharing performance insights) is
predominantly male. In contrast, women are well represented in
Shakespeare podcasts. Noting this trend, this Element envisions and
urges a feminist podagogy which entails utilizing podcasts for
feminism in Shakespeare pedagogy. Through detailed case studies of
teaching women characters in Hamlet, A Winter's Tale, The Merchant
of Venice, and As You Like It, and through road-tested assignments
and activities, this Element explains how educators can harness the
functionalities of podcasts, such as amplification, archiving, and
community building to shape a Shakespeare pedagogy that is
empowering for women. More broadly, it advocates paying greater
attention to the intersection of Digital Humanities and anti-racist
feminism in Shakespeare Studies.
