R4,359 Discovery Miles 43 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control bridges the gap between the theory of protection and control and the practical applications of protection equipment. Understanding how protection functions is crucial not only for equipment developers and manufacturers, but also for their users who need to install, set and operate the protection devices in an appropriate manner. After introductory chapters related to protection technology and functions, Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control presents the digital algorithms for signal filtering, followed by measurement algorithms of the most commonly-used protection criteria values and decision-making methods in protective relays. A large part of the book is devoted to the basic theory and applications of artificial intelligence techniques for protection and control. Fuzzy logic based schemes, artificial neural networks, expert systems and genetic algorithms with their advantages and drawbacks are discussed. AI techniques are compared and it is also shown how they can be combined to eliminate the disadvantages and magnify the useful features of particular techniques. The information provided in Digital Signal Processing in Power System Protection and Control can be useful for protection engineers working in utilities at various levels of the electricity network, as well as for students of electrical engineering, especially electrical power engineering. It may also be helpful for other readers who want to get acquainted with and to apply the filtering, measuring and decision-making algorithms for purposes other than protection and control, everywhere fast and on-line signal analysis is needed for proper functioning of the apparatus.

HD Chiang
R4,403 Discovery Miles 44 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Learn how to implement BCU methods for fast direct stability assessments of electric power systems

Electric power providers around the world rely on stability analysis programs to help ensure uninterrupted service to their customers. These programs are typically based on step-by-step numerical integrations of power system stability models to simulate system dynamic behaviors. Unfortunately, this offline practice is inadequate to deal with current operating environments. For years, direct methods have held the promise of providing real-time stability assessments; however, these methods have presented several challenges and limitations.

This book addresses these challenges and limitations with the BCU methods developed by author Hsiao-Dong Chiang. To date, BCU methods have been adopted by twelve major utility companies in Asia and North America. In addition, BCU methods are the only direct methods adopted by the Electric Power Research Institute in its latest version of DIRECT 4.0.

Everything you need to take full advantage of BCU methods is provided, including:

Theoretical foundations of direct methods

Theoretical foundations of energy functions

BCU methods and their theoretical foundations

Group-based BCU method and its applications

Numerical studies on industrial models and data

Armed with a solid foundation in the underlying theory of direct methods, energy functions, and BCU methods, you'll discover how to efficiently solve complex practical problems in stability analysis. Most chapters begin with an introduction and end with concluding remarks, making it easy for you to implement these tested and proven methods that will help you avoid costly and dangerous power outages.

Environmental Control in Thermal Power Plants (Hardcover): T.M. Aggarwal Environmental Control in Thermal Power Plants (Hardcover)
T.M. Aggarwal
R5,125 Discovery Miles 51 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

From wood and coal to predominantly oil and natural gas. Thermal Power Plants use fuels for power generation. Water is used for process, cooling, as well as for service/drinking requirement. Chemicals are used for conditioning of water, corrosion-control and sometimes for conditioning of fuel as well. Lubricants are used for machinery. These inputs generate waste products. Human related wastes (sewage etc.) are also generated along with the processed waste. These pollutants/wastes need to be treated before their disposal from the plants. The treated effluents are required to meet the limits set by Central / State Pollution Control Boards. The regulations, issued by these agencies, specify the maximum allowable limits applicable to the pollutants discharge from the Power Plants. This book is a serious effort that deals in detail with all the above issues and we are sure that scientists, academicians, researchers and professionals who are constantly facing these issues and are striving to move towards a zero emission regime, will find this monograph a very useful reference tool on the topic. Note: T&F does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Smart Grids are the future of energy. By creating networks from power plant to home, utility companies will be able to regulate power consumption making sure that consumers are receiving the amount that is needed, no more or less. While this new use of networking technology and unique applications such as smart meters will help to conserve energy it also opens up a pipeline, that was regulated manually, into the computer world of interconnected networks. The infrastructure that is being built will need to have robust security as an attack on this network could create chaos to tens of thousands of power consumers, stop a utility company in its tracks, or be used in a cyberwar.

"Securing the Smart Grid" takes a look at grid security today, how it is developing and being deployed into now over 10 million households in the US alone. Direct attacks to smart meters as well as attacks via the networks will be detailed along with suggestions for defense against them. A framework for how security should be implemented throughout this growing system will be included directing security consultants, and system and network architects on how to keep the grid strong against attackers big and small.
Details how old and new hacking techniques can be used against the grid and how to defend against themDiscusses current security initiatives and how they fall short of what is neededFind out how hackers can use the new infrastructure against itself

Power System Transients - Theory and Applications, Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition): Akihiro Ametani, Naoto Nagaoka,... Power System Transients - Theory and Applications, Second Edition (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Akihiro Ametani, Naoto Nagaoka, Yoshihiro Baba, Teruo Ohno, Koichi Yamabuki
R2,718 Discovery Miles 27 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This new edition covers a wide area from transients in power systems-including the basic theory, analytical calculations, EMTP simulations, computations by numerical electromagnetic analysis methods, and field test results-to electromagnetic disturbances in the field on EMC and control engineering. Not only does it show how a transient on a single-phase line can be explained from a physical viewpoint, but it then explains how it can be solved analytically by an electric circuit theory. Approximate formulas, which can be calculated by a pocket calculator, are presented so that a transient can be analytically evaluated by a simple hand calculation. Since a real power line is three-phase, this book includes a theory that deals with a multi-phase line for practical application. In addition, methods for tackling a real transient in a power system are introduced. This new edition contains three completely revised and updated chapters, as well as two new chapters on grounding and numerical methods.

Three-phase AC-AC Power Converters Based on Matrix Converter Topology - Matrix-reactance frequency converters concept... Three-phase AC-AC Power Converters Based on Matrix Converter Topology - Matrix-reactance frequency converters concept (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)

AC voltage frequency changes is one of the most important functions of solid state power converters. The most desirable features in frequency converters are the ability to generate load voltages with arbitrary amplitude and frequency, sinusoidal currents and voltages waveforms; the possibility of providing unity power factor for any load; and, finally, a simple and compact power circuit. Over the past decades, a number of different frequency converter topologies have appeared in the literature, but only the converters with either a voltage or current DC link are commonly used in industrial applications. Improvements in power semiconductor switches over recent years have resulted in the development of many structures of AC-AC converters without DC electric energy storage. Such converters are an alternative solution for frequently recommended systems with DC energy storage and are characterized by a lower price, smaller size and longer lifetime. Most of the these topologies are based on the structure of the matrix converter.

"Three-Phase AC-AC Power Converters Based On Matrix Converter Topology: Matrix-reactance frequency converters concept" presents a review of power frequency converters, with special attention paid to converters without DC energy storage. Particular attention is paid to nine new converters named matrix-reactance frequency converters which have been developed by the author and the team of researchers from Institute of Electrical Engineering at the University of Zielona Gora. The topologies of the presented matrix-reactance frequency converters are based on a three-phase unipolar buck-boost matrix-reactance chopper with source or load switches arranged as in a matrix converter. This kind of approach makes it possible to obtain an output voltage greater than the input one (similar to that in a matrix-reactance chopper) and a frequency conversion (similar to that in a matrix converter).

Written for researchers and Ph.D. students working in the field of power electronics converters and drive systems, "Three-Phase AC-AC Power Converters Based On Matrix Converter Topology: Matrix-reactance frequency converters concept "will also be valuable to" "power electronics converter designers and users; R&D centers; and readers needing industry solutions in variable speed drive systems, such as automation and aviation.

A microgrid is a small network of electricity users with a local source of supply that is usually attached to a larger grid but can function independently. The interconnection of small scale generating units, such as PV and wind turbines, and energy storage systems, such as batteries, to a low voltage distribution grid involves three major challenges: variability, scalability, and stability. It must keep delivering reliable and stable power also when changing, or repairing, any component, or under varying wind and solar conditions. It also must be able to accept additional units, i.e. be scalable. This reference discusses these three challenges facing engineers and researchers in the field of power systems, covering topics such as demand side energy management, transactive energy, optimizing and sizing of microgrid components. Case studies and results provide illustrative examples in each chapter.

Energy has been an inevitable component of human lives for decades. Recent rapid developments in the area require analyzing energy systems not as independent components but rather as connected interdependent networks. The Handbook of Networks in Power Systems includes the state-of-the-art developments that occurred in the power systems networks, in particular gas, electricity, liquid fuels, freight networks, as well as their interactions. The book is separated into two volumes with three sections, where one scientific paper or more are included to cover most important areas of networks in power systems. The first volume covers topics arising in electricity network, in particular electricity markets, smart grid, network expansion, as well as risk management. The second volume presents problems arising in gas networks; such as scheduling and planning of natural gas systems, pricing, as well as optimal location of gas supply units. In addition, the second volume covers the topics of interactions between energy networks. Each subject is identified following the activity on the domain and the recognition of each subject as an area of research. The scientific papers are authored by world specialists on the domain and present either state-of-the-arts reviews or scientific developments.
