Aluminum Matrix Composites Reinforced with Alumina Nanoparticles (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016): Riccardo Casati Aluminum Matrix Composites Reinforced with Alumina Nanoparticles (Paperback, 1st ed. 2016)
Riccardo Casati
R1,871 Discovery Miles 18 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes the latest efforts to develop aluminum nanocomposites with enhanced damping and mechanical properties and good workability. The nanocomposites exhibited high strength, improved damping behavior and good ductility, making them suitable for use as wires. Since the production of metal matrix nanocomposites by conventional melting processes is considered extremely problematic (because of the poor wettability of the nanoparticles), different powder metallurgy routes were investigated, including high-energy ball milling and unconventional compaction methods. Special attention was paid to the structural characterization at the micro- and nanoscale, as uniform nanoparticle dispersion in metal matrix is of prime importance. The aluminum nanocomposites displayed an ultrafine microstructure reinforced with alumina nanoparticles produced in situ or added ex situ. The physical, mechanical and functional characteristics of the materials produced were evaluated using different mechanical tests and microstructure investigation techniques. The book presents and discusses the experimental results in detail, and offers suggestions for future research directions.

George Eastman - A Biography (Paperback): Elizabeth Brayer George Eastman - A Biography (Paperback)
Elizabeth Brayer
R1,027 Discovery Miles 10 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Now back in print, this life of George Eastman is the first biography since 1930 of the man who transformed the world of photography. In this revealing and informative work, Brayer shows us how such key innovations as roll film and the light, hand-held camera helped the Eastman Kodak Company dominate the world market. More importantly, Brayer draws a vivid portrait of the man behind the money. Eastman worked hard at staying out of the limelight and even insisted that his donations be kept anonymous, prompting the Boston Globe to call him "America's most modest and least-known millionaire." Despite his retirement in 1925, Eastman showed little sign of slowing down. Making money had been interesting, but putting money to work became more so. In the 1920s he designed a special camera for use in orthodontia and established elaborate dental clinics for needy children around the world. He oversaw the building of the Eastman theatre and the Eastman School of Music. His contributions built a new campus for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a new medical school for the University of Rochester. Finally, he became the largest contributor to the education of African Americans during the 1920s and the Tuskegee Institute's most important benefactor. Elizabeth Brayer lives in Rochester, NY. For the past 18 years she has served on both the George Eastman Legacy and the Landscape committees at the George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography and Film. She writes about the history of central and Western New York State. George Eastman: A Biography was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1996.

Photon Absorption Models in Nanostructured Semiconductor Solar Cells and Devices (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Antonio Luque,... Photon Absorption Models in Nanostructured Semiconductor Solar Cells and Devices (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Antonio Luque, Alexander Virgil Mellor
R2,090 Discovery Miles 20 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is intended to be used by materials and device physicists and also solar cells researchers. It models the performance characteristics of nanostructured solar cells and resolves the dynamics of transitions between several levels of these devices. An outstanding insight into the physical behaviour of these devices is provided, which complements experimental work. This therefore allows a better understanding of the results, enabling the development of new experiments and optimization of new devices. It is intended to be accessible to researchers, but also to provide engineering tools which are often only accessible to quantum physicists. Photon Absorption Models in Nanostructured Semiconductor Solar Cells and Devices is intended to provide an easy-to-handle means to calculate the light absorption in nanostructures, the final goal being the ability to model operational behaviour of nanostructured solar cells. It allows researchers to design new experiments and improve solar cell performances, and offers a means for the easy approximate calculation of the energy spectrum and photon absorption coefficients of nanostructures. This calculation is based on the effective mass model and uses a new Hamiltonian called the Empirical kp Hamiltonian, which is based on a four band kp model.

The Book of Sun-Dials (Paperback): Margaret Gatty The Book of Sun-Dials (Paperback)
Margaret Gatty
R776 Discovery Miles 7 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Margaret Gatty (1809 1873) was an English writer best known for her researches on sundials and British seaweeds. After marrying the Rev. Alfred Gatty in 1839, she moved to Ecclesfield, Yorkshire, where she pursued her literary and scientific studies. This volume, first published in 1872, contains detailed descriptions of various styles of sundials, many taken from Gatty's own collection. Over 350 sundials from across Britain and Europe are described, and each sundial's location is noted in this work, which was one of the first popular books on the subject. Examples included range from portable sundials to early Saxon sundials, as well as the more familiar church sundials. This volume is one of Gatty's best known works, and remains a valuable reference for the various types of sundials and the variations and similarities in their mottoes. The Pendulum - A Case Study in Physics (Paperback): Gregory L. Baker, James A. Blackburn The Pendulum - A Case Study in Physics (Paperback)
Gregory L. Baker, James A. Blackburn
R1,629 Discovery Miles 16 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The pendulum: a case study in physics is a unique book in several ways. Firstly, it is a comprehensive quantitative study of one physical system, the pendulum, from the viewpoint of elementary and more advanced classical physics, modern chaotic dynamics, and quantum mechanics. In addition, coupled pendulums and pendulum analogs of superconducting devices are also discussed. Secondly, this book treats the physics of the pendulum within a historical and cultural context, showing, for example, that the pendulum has been intimately connected with studies of the earth's density, the earth's motion, and timekeeping. While primarily a physics book, the work provides significant added interest through the use of relevant cultural and historical vignettes. This approach offers an alternative to the usual modern physics courses. The text is amply illustrated and augmented by exercises at the end of each chapter.

The Trail of Time - Time Measurement with Incense in East Asia (Paperback, Revised): Silvio A. Bedini The Trail of Time - Time Measurement with Incense in East Asia (Paperback, Revised)
Silvio A. Bedini
R1,547 R1,023 Discovery Miles 10 230 Save R524 (34%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a scholarly study of a virtually unknown aspect of the history of horology (timekeeping), compiled from Chinese and Japanese historical and literary records, some of which are translated and published here for the first time. Incense timekeepers played an important role in early Chinese social and technological history, in addition to their use for time measurement. They were used in temples for religious rites, in agricultural regions for regulating water for irrigation, in palaces and government offices, and in the studies of scholars. A fascinating compendium of knowledge about a neglected aspect of Oriental culture, this book will appeal not only to historians of China and Japan, but to the growing number of collectors and museum curators who are interested in incense clocks. It is illustrated with black and white halftones of a large number of the clocks, which are renowned for their beauty of design and quality of workmanship. The book also includes a catalogue of incense clocks which have appeared in auction houses and museums.

Short Pulse Laser Systems for Biomedical Applications (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017): Kunal Mitra, Stephanie Miller Short Pulse Laser Systems for Biomedical Applications (Paperback, 1st ed. 2017)
Kunal Mitra, Stephanie Miller
R1,642 Discovery Miles 16 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents practical information on the clinical applications of short pulse laser systems and the techniques for optimizing these applications in a manner that will be relevant to a broad audience, including engineering and medical students as well as researchers, clinicians, and technicians. Short pulse laser systems are useful for both subsurface tissue imaging and laser induced thermal therapy (LITT), which hold great promise in cancer diagnostics and treatment. Such laser systems may be used alone or in combination with optically active nanoparticles specifically administered to the tissues of interest for enhanced contrast in imaging and precise heating during LITT. Mathematical and computational models of short pulse laser-tissue interactions that consider the transient radiative transport equation coupled with a bio-heat equation considering the initial transients of laser heating were developed to analyze the laser-tissue interaction during imaging and therapy. Experiments were first performed to characterize the tissue optical properties needed to optimize the dose for thermal therapy. Experiments were then performed on animal models to characterize the heat affected zone for LITT. The experimental measurements were also validated using the computational models.

Collective Plasmon-Modes in Gain Media - Quantum Emitters and Plasmonic Nanostructures (Paperback, 2015 ed.): V.A.G. Rivera,... Collective Plasmon-Modes in Gain Media - Quantum Emitters and Plasmonic Nanostructures (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
V.A.G. Rivera, O.B. Silva, Y. Ledemi, Y. Messaddeq, E. Marega Jr.
R1,960 Discovery Miles 19 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book represents the first detailed description, including both theoretical aspects and experimental methods, of the interaction of rare-earth ions with surface plasmon polariton from the point of view of collective plasmon-photon interactions via resonance modes (metal nanoparticles or nanostructure arrays) with quantum emitters (rare-earth ions). These interactions are of particular interest for applications to optical telecommunications, optical displays, and laser solid state technologies. Thus, our main goal is to give a more precise overview of the rapidly emerging field of nanophotonics by means of the study of the quantum properties of light interaction with matter at the nanoscale. In this way, collective plasmon-modes in a gain medium result from the interaction/coupling between a quantum emitter (created by rare-earth ions) with a metallic surface, inducing different effects such as the polarization of the metal electrons (so-called surface plasmon polariton - SPP), a field enhancement sustained by resonance coupling, or transfer of energy due to non-resonant coupling between the metallic nanostructure and the optically active surrounding medium. These effects counteract the absorption losses in the metal to enhance luminescence properties or even to control the polarization and phase of quantum emitters. The engineering of plasmons/SPP in gain media constitutes a new field in nanophotonics science with a tremendous technological potential in integrated optics/photonics at the nanoscale based on the control of quantum effects. This book will be an essential tool for scientists, engineers, and graduate and undergraduate students interested not only in a new frontier of fundamental physics, but also in the realization of nanophotonic devices for optical telecommunication.

Gigaseal Formation in Patch Clamping - With Applications of Nanotechnology (Paperback, 2014 ed.): Majid Malboubi, Kyle Jiang Gigaseal Formation in Patch Clamping - With Applications of Nanotechnology (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Majid Malboubi, Kyle Jiang
R1,779 Discovery Miles 17 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents an investigation of gigaseal formation using micro/nanotechnology. The aims of the book are twofold. First, it explains the mechanisms of gigaseal formation using the latest discoveries. Second, it provides practical techniques for frequent formation of high resistance seals. The formation of a high-resistance electrical seal, also known as a gigaseal, between a cell membrane and a glass micropipette tip is essential in patch-clamp experiments. Even though four decades have passed since the introduction of the patch-clamping technique by Neher and Sakmann, gigaseal formation remains an obstacle in developing the high-throughput ion channel screening systems required by the pharmaceutical industry. Here the authors share their latest methods for achieving gigaseal formation and describe techniques that are highly desirable at both research and industrial levels. Nanotechnology has been found to be a powerful tool for studying and modifying glass micropipettes and in tackling the problem of gigaseal formation.

Harrison Decoded - Towards A Perfect Pendulum Clock (Hardcover): Rory McEvoy, Jonathan Betts Harrison Decoded - Towards A Perfect Pendulum Clock (Hardcover)
Rory McEvoy, Jonathan Betts
R2,636 Discovery Miles 26 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Brings together the output of a forty-year collaborative research project that unpicked and put into practice the fine details of John Harrison's extraordinary pendulum clock system. Harrison predicted that his unique method of making pendulum clocks could provide as much as one-hundred-times the stability of those made by his contemporaries. However, his final publication, which promised to describe the system, was a chaotic jumble of information, much of which had nothing to do with clockwork. One contemporary reviewer of Harrison's book could only suggest that the end result was a product of Harrison's 'superannuated dotage.' The focus of this book centres on the making, adjusting, and testing of Clock B which was the subject of various trials at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. The modern history of Clock B is accompanied by scientific analysis of the clock system, Clock B's performance, the methods of data-gathering alongside historical perspectives on Harrison's clockmaking, that of his contemporaries, and some evaluation of the possible influence of early 18th century scientific thought.
