Husband-and-wife design team Vicky Jacob-Ebbinghaus and Juarez
Rodrigues set up their hugely popular website
eatingfortwocookbook.com when they started interviewing pregnant
women on their strangest cravings. They 'cooked', tasted, rated and
photographed each discovery, giving it the look of haute cuisine
and a similarly fancy-sounding name. When they posted these
creations on their blog, the crowd went wild with reposts and tags.
More and more pregnant women submitted their cravings for the
'Vicki and Juarez treatment' and soon media pundits were raving.
Pickles and Ice Cream feature 75 almost- never-before-seen recipes,
uniquely beautiful (even if their appeal as food might be
questionable) photographs of the recipes, along with the stories of
the pregnant women who dreamed them up.
In this guide to consciously exploring the shamanic journey of
pregnancy and parenthood, Anna Cariad-Barrett offers techniques and
ceremonies to honor the transformation of becoming a parent and
engage the sacred wisdom-keeper within. She provides tools and
meditations to create personal shamanic medicine to support you and
your family on this journey as well as connect with the wisdom of
nature, expand your intuition, and explore altered states of
consciousness. Restoring honour to the shadow side of parenthood,
the author discusses the shamanic perspective on miscarriage,
fertility, sexuality, postpartum stress and depression, blended
families, and adoption as a form of birthing through the heart. She
explains how to heal any deep psychic wounds from your birth family
and transform negative beliefs you may hold about parenthood. She
provides chapters on each trimester of pregnancy, offering specific
teachings and techniques appropriate to each stage as well as
conception, birth, and the postpartum period.
Even after reading countless pregnancy books I still didn't
understand what my labour would be like. All I really knew was it
would be painful and scary. Then my obstetrician suggested I take
Juju Sundin's birth skills classes. Juju gave me the knowledge to
understand my body during labour and taught me about the physiology
of pain and how to use her techniques to deal with it. - Sarah
MurdochIf you're like most women, you'll go into labour with little
knowledge of exactly what your body is doing and why, and how you
can actively manage the pain and stay in control while helping your
body do what it's designed to.That's where Birth Skills comes in, a
step-by-step guide packed with information plus easy-to-learn,
proven pain management skills. In Birth Skills, obstetric
physiotherapist Juju Sundin shares the techniques she has pioneered
over her 30-year career, while Sarah Murdoch takes you on a
personal journey of her own labour and birth, describing how she
learned the skills in the class then applied them on the big
day.Whether it's your first baby or lucky last, you will learn:*
how your body works in labour and why* how to turn fear into
positive action so you stay in control* how to use movement,
breathing, vocalisation, visualisation, keywords and other handy
techniques* what to wear, what to take, and what questions to ask*
how your partner can help, and working as a team* other women's
experiences using Juju's techniques. Birth is all about the bigger
picture -- educating and empowering yourself, giving it a try,
doing it your way, and a healthy mother and baby. - Juju Sundin

The First Year Is Survival is the literary equivalent of a hug and
a hot cup of tea after a bad day. Being a parent for the first-time
is tough but the workload is doubled, or tripled, with multiple
babies! Through personal reflections and interviews with parents
from around the world, Leonie Huie guides parents of twins and
multiples through the first year of life in the new role, openly
addressing challenges such as anxiety, post-natal depression,
returning to work, behavioural and emotional changes, and offers
advice about how to get a good night's sleep, keep communicating
with your partner, maintain a healthy relationship with your
friends and family, and how to avoid shutting down and shutting up.
By the end of the book, the aim is that you'll have more practical
and realistic ideas of what to do to help you and your new family
throughout that first year. You never know, you may even find that
you've not just survived but thrived over those 12 months! Leonie,
who lives in London, now works part-time as a teacher whilst
running Empower Me and uses her 17 years' experience in education
to coach and deliver training to mothers wanting to make positive
changes in their lives to improve work-life balance for themselves
and their family. She is also a female empowerment coach, public
speaker and her first book, 'The First Year is Survival,' is
written to help parents of twins and multiple children survive
their first year of parenthood. Leonie's daughters are still young
so she manages her time effectively to ensure she can take them to
their favourite place - the park - as well as play games and watch
Mr Tumble..
It's as easy as waving bye-bye!Babies have a lot to say, even before they can actually speak. Baby Signs are simple gestures that allow babies and toddlers to communicate what they see, what they need, and even how they feel. Research has shown that Baby Signs decrease frustration and tantrums and help your baby talk sooner. When to begin: When your child starts to wave bye-bye.How to do it: Show your baby the sign and point to the picture. Always say the word as you make the sign. Improvise: Make up your own signs -- your baby probably will too!
Expertise can explain the science of what's happening to a fetus or
a baby throughout development, but all the science in the world
can't tell you what it feels like to have a baby: the pang of
morning sickness, the pain of labor, the excitement of birth, and
the joy that comes from seeing your baby's first smile. This book
is about pregnancy and first-time parenthood, and what we actually
experience in the nine months of pregnancy and the nine months that
follow. As a professor of infant and child development, author
Vanessa LoBue had certain expectations about how pregnancy and
motherhood would go. Experiencing it was a different story. As she
learned, the first few months of parenthood are much harder than
anyone tells you. Written month-to-month in real time as LoBue
proceeded through pregnancy and first-time parenthood, 9 Months In,
9 Months Out integrates science and infant development with the
personal journey involved in becoming a parent. LoBue also takes a
researcher's lens to issues that are top of mind for new parents:
breastfeeding, the sleep training controversy, gender development,
the science (or lack thereof) behind the link between vaccinations
and autism, and at length, the debate over screen time.
Aromatherapy is increasingly incorporated into midwifery practice,
particularly in midwife-led units. It is the most commonly used
therapy by midwives and birthing practitioners but access to
up-to-date safety information is limited. Almost 90% of women may
be using complementary therapies during pregnancy and birth and so
it is very important that midwives are aware of safe and
appropriate use based on contemporary evidence. This book covers
safety, effectiveness, evidence, benefits and risks, and legal,
ethical and professional issues related to incorporating
aromatherapy into maternity care. Useful charts and tables are
included for quick reference in clinical practice, making this is
the ultimate handbook for using aromatherapy in midwifery practice.
The scientific basis behind aromatherapy, including relevant
anatomy and physiology, chemistry and pharmacology are covered, as
well as a critical appraisal of the contemporary research evidence
supporting the use of aromatherapy in maternity care. Essential oil
profiles of the oils that can be safely used in pregnancy, birth
and postnatally are also included.

Epigenetics, the study of heritable changes in gene expression, has
been heralded as one of the most promising new fields of scientific
inquiry. Current large-scale studies selectively draw on
epigenetics to connect behavioral choices made by pregnant people,
such as diet and exercise, to health risks for future generations.
As the first ethnography of its kind, Weighing the Future examines
the sociopolitical implications of ongoing pregnancy trials in the
United States and the United Kingdom, illuminating how processes of
scientific knowledge production are linked to capitalism,
surveillance, and environmental reproduction. Natali Valdez argues
that a focus on individual behavior rather than social environments
ignores the vital impacts of systemic racism. The environments we
imagine to shape our genes, bodies, and future health are
intimately tied to race, gender, and structures of inequality. This
groundbreaking book makes the case that science, and how we
translate it, is a reproductive project that requires feminist
vigilance. Instead of fixating on a future at risk, this book
brings attention to the present at stake.
