Childhood allergies are booming, but what if there was a way to
prevent allergies in the first place? What if simple lifestyle
changes in the critical first 1000 days could change your baby's
life? For families across the world, eczema, asthma, hay fever and
food allergies are constant anxieties, sometimes with devastating
consequences. Leading gastroenterologist Dr Vincent Ho has taken a
deep dive into the exploding medical field of gut health and
explains that from conception to birth, and from breastfeeding to
the introduction of solid foods, small steps go a long way in
preventing allergies and fortifying your baby's immune system. Dr
Ho cuts through the scientific jargon to provide strategies for
allergy management and treatment, and shows you how to strengthen
your child's gut health for the long term - all before they begin
to walk. The Healthy Baby Gut Guide is packed with sensible advice,
surprising scientific discoveries and even a nutritionist-approved
nine-week infant meal plan to help parents navigate the
introduction of common allergenic foods. Practical, easy-to-follow
and utterly eye-opening, this book is essential reading for every
parent and parent-to-be. 'Essential reading for every parent and
parent-to-be.' - Dr Rupy Aujla, Author & Founder, The Doctor's
Kitchen 'This is a really useful guide. Dr Vincent Ho has put
together an easy to read and understand book on how to reduce
allergies in children. I highly recommend this book in your list of
baby books to read.' - Dr Sonny Chong, Consultant Paediatrician and
Gastroenterologist, Queen Mary's Hospital for Children 'A terrific
evidence-based guide to help parents foster the optimum gut health
for their babies. As a mother and scientist, I will turn to this
book time and time again. Dr Ho is clearly and expert in his field,
navigating a tricky subject with admirable ease and dexterity.' -

Aromatherapy is increasingly incorporated into midwifery practice,
particularly in midwife-led units. It is the most commonly used
therapy by midwives and birthing practitioners but access to
up-to-date safety information is limited. Almost 90% of women may
be using complementary therapies during pregnancy and birth and so
it is very important that midwives are aware of safe and
appropriate use based on contemporary evidence. This book covers
safety, effectiveness, evidence, benefits and risks, and legal,
ethical and professional issues related to incorporating
aromatherapy into maternity care. Useful charts and tables are
included for quick reference in clinical practice, making this is
the ultimate handbook for using aromatherapy in midwifery practice.
The scientific basis behind aromatherapy, including relevant
anatomy and physiology, chemistry and pharmacology are covered, as
well as a critical appraisal of the contemporary research evidence
supporting the use of aromatherapy in maternity care. Essential oil
profiles of the oils that can be safely used in pregnancy, birth
and postnatally are also included.
Humanity, argues Michel Odent, stands at a crossroads in the
history of childbirth - and the direction we choose to take will
have critical consequences. Until recently a woman could not have
had a baby without releasing a complex cocktail of 'love hormones'.
In many societies today, most women give birth without relying on
the release of such a flow of hormones. Some give birth via
caesarean section, while others use drugs that not only block the
release of these natural substances, but do not have their
beneficial behavioural effects. 'This unprecedented situation must
be considered in terms of civilization', says Odent, and gives us
urgent new reasons to rediscover the basic needs of women in
labour. At a time when pleas for the 'humanization' of childbirth
are fashionable, the author suggests, rather, that we should first
accept our 'mammalian' condition and give priority to the woman's
need for privacy and to feel secure. The activity of the intellect,
the use of language, and many cultural beliefs and rituals - which
are all special to humans - are handicaps in the period surrounding
birth. Says Odent: 'To give birth to her baby, the mother needs
privacy. She needs to feel unobserved. The newborn baby needs the
skin of the mother, the smell of the mother, her breast. These are
all needs that we hold in common with the other mammals, but which
humans have learned to neglect, to ignore or even deny.' Expectant
parents, midwives, doulas, childbirth educators, those involved in
public health, and all those interested in the future of humanity,
will find this a provocative and visionary book.
Breastfeeding mums, and expectant mothers who are deciding whether
to breastfeed, share a common concern: Will I make enough milk? In

supply, and what to do if it happens, including: breastfeeding
basics--preparing to nurse, latching techniques, and scheduling
feedings; the causes of low milk supply and milk slumps; in-depth
information on nursing mothers' nutritional needs; and 75 recipes
that make the most of lactogenic, or milkboosting, ingredients.

Get both mama and baby on track for a healthy, happy, and delicious
life! More and more studies show that the human body is not meant
to digest the amount of processed wheat we've grown accustomed to.
Whether you have Celiac disease or are simply trying to reduce your
gluten intake, you are guaranteed to benefit from this insightful
book. We all know that "you are what you eat." And once you
conceive, your baby is what you eat as well-prenatal health and
nutrition during pregnancy is so imperative! The US is one of only
eight countries in the world where the rate of mortality for
pregnant women is on the rise, and obesity is one of the primary
causes of this phenomenon-half of all pregnant women are considered
overweight (not due to baby weight gained during pregnancy, which
is completely natural and expected). Widely accepted, doctor- and
dietitian-prescribed nutrition guidelines actually may be
contributing to the growing obesity and gestational diabetes
epidemics. Newly expectant mothers receive a packet of health
information from their doctors, including a nutrition pamphlet,
which proscribes a daily food regimen with 100 grams of sugar per
day-the amount of sugar in 10 glazed donuts! Aimee has developed a
comprehensive nutrition guide that helps expecting and postpartum
women achieve ideal health and weight during pregnancy and beyond.
Implementing philosophies of current, highly-effective gluten-free
nutrition trends that have not been fully introduced to the
prenatal and postpartum populations, The Whole Pregnancy offers a
detailed dietary regimen that is based on whole and unprocessed
foods, low-glycemic carbohydrates, quality proteins, and essential
fats. Developed by a certified nutritionist, the meal-planning
system presents a variety of simple, delicious recipes to benefit
mother and baby. It also provides special instruction for each
stage of pregnancy, including the first, second, and third
trimesters, as well as the "fourth trimester" of postpartum weight
loss and nursing.

a few pointers--a road map of what lies ahead. That's what this
book is for.
From Dude to Dad gives you the need-to-know essentials on
pregnancy, birthing, and parenthood, and how it's okay to be scared
out of your mind. You'll learn what the expecting mom is going
through during each trimester, how you can be the best partner and
dad-to-be, and how to immediately start bonding with baby.
Be prepared for the arrival that will ultimately change your life
in the best way possible.
Many women know, and research confirms, that having an experienced
female birth companion, who is neither a health professional nor a
part of their social circle, can have a tangible positive effect on
their experience of childbirth. Why Doulas Matter is a
comprehensive discussion of how a doula can offer expectant and new
parents information and practical and emotional support to improve
their experience of birth and early parenting.
Women are over four times more likely to have a caesarean birth now
than they were thirty years ago and eight times more likely than
they were fifty years ago. However, as this book explains, many of
these caesareans are not necessary and are often carried out for
non-medical reasons, of no benefit to mother or baby. Written for
expectant mothers and health professionals How to Avoid an
Unnecessary Caesarean provides information to help women give birth
in the way they want to. The book provides suggestions for
constructive ways to achieve a natural childbirth, when this is the
right option for mother and baby. As well as detailed explanations
of all the pros and cons of caesarean birth, the book contains
several real-life birth stories, a comprehensive glossary of terms
and essential information for parents-to-be.
