This book profiles twentieth-century India through the life and times of Ramananda Chatterjee - journalist, influencer, nationalist. Through a reconstruction of his history, the book highlights the oft-forgotten role of media in the making of the idea of India. It shows how early twentieth-century colonial India was a curious melee of ideas and people - a time of rising nationalism, as well as an influx of Western ideas; of unprecedented violence and compelling non-violence; of press censorship and defiant journalism. It shows how Ramananda Chatterjee navigated this world and went beyond the traditional definition of the nation as an entity with fixed boundaries to anticipate Benedict Anderson and Ernest Gellner. This book approaches the Scottish women's suffrage campaign from the point of view of the popular press. It investigates how the press engaged with the women's suffrage movement; how suffragettes were portrayed in newspapers; and how different groups attempted to use the press to get their message into the public sphere. Scottish suffrage campaigners acknowledged the need for press coverage from the start of the campaign in the 1870s, but the arrival of the militant suffragettes completely transformed newspaper coverage. The book examines the birth, development, and mode of operation of the Hebrew popular press that progressed in Ottoman Palestine between 1884 and the eruption of World War I in 1914. This book develops a corpus-assisted approach to the study of self-reflexivity in journalism and examines the ways in which news workers and subsequently, news organizations, choose to promote an identity for themselves and the ideologies that accompany them. Using The Guardian as a case study, the volume draws on its Corpus Assisted Discourse Studies (CADS) to explore ways in which a newspaper can reflect upon itself, including how newspapers conceptualize the role of the media, how they define good vs. bad journalism, what they see as professional values, how they attempt to cement community membership amongst their readers, how they construct and project their overall identity and role as newspapers and also how they see their position within the larger community. A chapter on the book's methodological framework reflects on critical aspects of CADS, including triangulation, objectivity and subjectivity, total accountability, and replicability. CADS methods are applied in the analysis chapters, with accompanying reflections on what we learn about the strengths and also maybe about some of the limitations of corpus methodology. Truth qualities of journalism are under intense scrutiny in today's world. Journalistic scandals have eroded public confidence in mainstream media while pioneering news media compete to satisfy the public's appetite for news. Still worse is the specter of "fake news" that looms over media and political systems that underpin everything from social stability to global governance. This volume aims to illuminate the contentious media landscape to help journalism students, scholars, and professionals understand contemporary conditions and arm them to deal with a spectrum of new developments ranging from technology and politics to best practices. Fake news is among the greatest of these concerns, and can encompass everything from sarcastic or ironic humor to bot-generated, made-up stories. It can also include the pernicious transmission of selected, biased facts, the use of incomplete or misleadingly selective framing of stories, and photographs that editorially convey certain characteristics.
