Routledge Handbook of Media Geographies (Hardcover): Barney Warf, Paul C. Adams Routledge Handbook of Media Geographies (Hardcover)
Barney Warf, Paul C. Adams
R6,622 Discovery Miles 66 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This Handbook offers a comprehensive overview of media geography, focusing on a range of different media viewed through the lenses of human geography and media theory. It addresses the spatial practices and processes associated with both old and new media, considering "media" not just as technologies and infrastructures, but also as networks, systems and assemblages of things that come together to enable communication in the real world. With contributions from academics specializing in geography and media studies, the Routledge Handbook of Media Geographies summarizes the recent developments in the field and explores key questions and challenges affecting various groups, such as women, minorities, and persons with visual impairment. It considers geographical aspects of disruptive media uses such as hacking, fake news, and racism. Written in an approachable style, chapters consider geographies of users, norms, rules, laws, values, attitudes, routines, customs, markets, and power relations. They shed light on how mobile media make users vulnerable to tracking and surveillance but also facilitate innovative forms of mobility, space perception and placemaking. Structured in four distinct sections centered around "control and access to digital media," "mass media," "mobile media and surveillance" and "media and the politics of knowledge," the Handbook explores digital divides and other manifestations of the uneven geographies of power. It also includes an overview of the alternative social media universe created by the Chinese government. Media geography is a burgeoning field of study that lies at the intersections of various social sciences, including human geography, political science, sociology, anthropology, communication/media studies, urban studies, and women and gender studies. Academics and students across these fields will greatly benefit from this Handbook.

Disrupting Journalism Ethics - Radical Change on the Frontier of Digital Media (Paperback): Stephen J. A Ward Disrupting Journalism Ethics - Radical Change on the Frontier of Digital Media (Paperback)
Stephen J. A Ward
R777 Discovery Miles 7 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Disrupting Journalism Ethics sets out to disrupt and change how we think about journalism and its ethics. The book contends that long-established ways of thinking, which have come down to us from the history of journalism, need radical conceptual reform, with alternate conceptions of the role of journalism and fresh principles to evaluate practice. Through a series of disruptions, the book undermines the traditional principles of journalistic neutrality and "just the facts" reporting. It proposes an alternate philosophy of journalism as engagement for democracy. The aim is a journalism ethic better suited to an age of digital and global media. As a philosophical pragmatist, Stephen J. A. Ward critiques traditional conceptions of accuracy, neutrality, detachment and patriotism, evaluating their capacity to respond to ethical dilemmas for journalists in the 21st century. The book proposes a holistic mindset for doing journalism ethics, a theory of journalism as advocacy for egalitarian democracy, and a global redefinition of basic journalistic norms. The book concludes by outlining the shape of a future journalism ethics, employing these alternative notions. Disrupting Journalism Ethics is an important intervention into the role of journalism today. It asks: what new role journalists should play in today's digital media world? And what new mind-set, new aims, and new standards ought jounalists to embrace? The book aims to persuade-and provoke-ethicists, journalists, students, and members of the public to disrupt and invent.

Bad News from Venezuela - Twenty years of fake news and misreporting (Paperback): Alan MacLeod Bad News from Venezuela - Twenty years of fake news and misreporting (Paperback)
Alan MacLeod
R781 Discovery Miles 7 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the election of President Hugo Chavez in 1998, Venezuela has become an important news item. Western coverage is shaped by the cultural milieu of its journalists, with news written from New York or London by non-specialists or by those staying inside wealthy guarded enclaves in an intensely segregated Caracas. Journalists mainly work with English-speaking elites and have little contact with the poor majority. Therefore, they reproduce ideas largely attuned to a Western, neoliberal understanding of Venezuela. Through extensive analysis of media coverage from Chavez's election to the present day, as well as detailed interviews with journalists and academics covering the country, Bad News from Venezuela highlights the factors contributing to reportage in Venezuela and why those factors exist in the first place. From this examination of a single Latin American country, the book furthers the discussion of contemporary media in the West, and how, with the rise of 'fake news', their operations have a significant impact on the wider representation of global affairs. Bad News from Venezuela is comprehensive and enlightening for undergraduate students and research academics in media and Latin American studies.

Fake News - Falsehood, Fabrication and Fantasy in Journalism (Paperback): Brian McNair Fake News - Falsehood, Fabrication and Fantasy in Journalism (Paperback)
Brian McNair
R771 Discovery Miles 7 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Fake News: Falsehood, fabrication and fantasy in journalism examines the causes and consequences of the 'fake news' phenomenon now sweeping the world's media and political debates. Drawing on three decades of research and writing on journalism and news media, the author engages with the fake news phenomenon in accessible, insightful language designed to bring clarity and context to a complex and fast-moving debate. The author presents fake news not as a cultural issue in isolation but rather as arising from, and contributing to, significant political and social trends in twenty-first century societies. Chapters identify the factors which have laid the groundwork for fake news' explosive appearance at this moment in our globalised public sphere. These include the rise of relativism and the crisis of objectivity, the role of digital media platforms in the production and consumption of news, and the growing drive to produce online content which attracts users and generates revenue.

Hyperlocal Journalism and Digital Disruptions - The journalism change agents in Australia and New Zealand (Paperback): Scott... Hyperlocal Journalism and Digital Disruptions - The journalism change agents in Australia and New Zealand (Paperback)
Scott Downman, Richard Murray
R773 Discovery Miles 7 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At a time when digital technologies are impacting on the success and sustainability of traditional models of journalism, hyperlocal journalism seeks to restore journalistic integrity, build community, incite change and engage audiences. This book argues for the increased importance of these new forms of localized reporting in the digital age. Hyperlocal Journalism and Digital Disruptions begins with the fundamental question of what hyperlocal journalism is, then focuses on three case studies which illustrate its potential to thrive when the right balance is struck between audience engagement, investment and respect. Each case study examines a different start-up in Australia and New Zealand. Although the notion of hyperlocal journalism is not new, the ways in which these regionalized stories are now being told has evolved. This book demonstrates the increased necessity for tailored approaches to creating and providing hyperlocal journalism in order to engage targeted audiences, meet their needs for news and reclaim authenticity and credibility for journalism. This is a valuable resource for researchers, academics, students and practitioners in the areas of Digital Journalism and Media Studies generally.

Geographies of Journalism - The Imaginative Power of Place in Making Digital News (Paperback): Kristy Hess, Robert E. Gutsche,... Geographies of Journalism - The Imaginative Power of Place in Making Digital News (Paperback)
Kristy Hess, Robert E. Gutsche, Jr.
R777 Discovery Miles 7 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Geographies of Journalism connects theoretical and practical discussions of the role of geotechnologies, social media, and boots-on-the-ground journalism in a digital age to underline the complications and challenges that place-making in the press brings to institutions and ideologies. By introducing and applying approaches to geography, cultural resistance, and power as it relates to discussions of space and place, this book takes a critical look at how online news media shapes perceptions of locales. Through verisimilitude, storytelling methods, and journalistic evidence shaped by sources and news processes, the press play a critical role in how audiences shape interpretations of social conditions "here" and "there", and place responsibility for socio-political issues that appear in everyday life. Issues of proximity, place, territory, news myth, placemaking, and power align in this book of innovative and new assessments of journalism in the digital age. This is a valuable resource for scholars across the fields of human geography, journalism, and mass media.

Indian Journalism and the Impact of Social Media (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Dhiman Chattopadhyay Indian Journalism and the Impact of Social Media (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Dhiman Chattopadhyay
R2,661 Discovery Miles 26 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is a pan-India study that examines social media's impact on Indian journalism, highlights emerging challenges, and discusses the way forward for India's newsrooms. A result of three years of field work, the project uses mixed-methods research - a survey of nearly 300 journalists from 15 Indian cities, followed by in-depth interviews with 25 senior editors - to analyze and explain journalists' perceptions about social media's usefulness and credibility, factors that influence their online news sourcing and sharing decisions, resultant challenges for newsrooms, and ways to address those challenges. The findings offer unique insights into how newer forces are influencing journalistic practices in an online-first era. Key differences emerge in perceptions between Indian journalists and their Western compatriots about who or what influence their actions. The findings also raise questions about Gatekeeping as a term to describe journalistic work in 21st Century India's newsrooms. The findings and the conclusions will hopefully help journalists, educators, and anyone interested in Indian journalism gain a deeper, more meaningful understanding about social media's impact on Indian journalism, and the way ahead for India's newsrooms.
