In March 1900, Dr. Joseph James Kinyoun, a surgeon with the Marine Hospital Service and the founder of the Hygienic Laboratory, which became the National Institutes of Health, discovered bubonic plague in San Francisco. His finding led to an immediate outcry from the governor, local and state politicians, and the city's commercial interests. In the hyper-sensationalized journalism of San Francisco's newspapers, Kinyoun was ridiculed, leading to death threats and a $50,000 bounty on his head. Eventually, California's quarantine caused an enormous uproar. By the time a special federal commission produced a report (initially withheld from the public, leading to charges of a coverup) that vindicated Kinyoun, a deal had been brokered wherein the pioneering doctor was removed from his post. This book tells a timely story about yellow journalism, coverup, corruption, the struggle between science and politics, and the consequences of blind denial of the truth.

This book is a pan-India study that examines social media's impact on Indian journalism, highlights emerging challenges, and discusses the way forward for India's newsrooms. A result of three years of field work, the project uses mixed-methods research - a survey of nearly 300 journalists from 15 Indian cities, followed by in-depth interviews with 25 senior editors - to analyze and explain journalists' perceptions about social media's usefulness and credibility, factors that influence their online news sourcing and sharing decisions, resultant challenges for newsrooms, and ways to address those challenges. The findings offer unique insights into how newer forces are influencing journalistic practices in an online-first era. Key differences emerge in perceptions between Indian journalists and their Western compatriots about who or what influence their actions. The findings also raise questions about Gatekeeping as a term to describe journalistic work in 21st Century India's newsrooms. The findings and the conclusions will hopefully help journalists, educators, and anyone interested in Indian journalism gain a deeper, more meaningful understanding about social media's impact on Indian journalism, and the way ahead for India's newsrooms.

Since the election of President Hugo Chavez in 1998, Venezuela has become an important news item. Western coverage is shaped by the cultural milieu of its journalists, with news written from New York or London by non-specialists or by those staying inside wealthy guarded enclaves in an intensely segregated Caracas. Journalists mainly work with English-speaking elites and have little contact with the poor majority. Therefore, they reproduce ideas largely attuned to a Western, neoliberal understanding of Venezuela. Through extensive analysis of media coverage from Chavez's election to the present day, as well as detailed interviews with journalists and academics covering the country, Bad News from Venezuela highlights the factors contributing to reportage in Venezuela and why those factors exist in the first place. This book expands on and complements the burgeoning Brexit literature by placing the UK's vote to leave the EU in its longer historical and discursive contexts. It examines the embedded Euroscepticism, which has dominated British political discourse on the European project and the role of the UK within it for at least the last three decades. Brexit was the consequence of a consistent denigration of the European integration project in the public sphere in which the terrain, and the conceptual vocabulary, of debate were set by a dominant, right-wing Eurosceptic discourse. This framed the EU as inherently heterogeneous and antagonistic to the UK. The book examines how ideas of British exceptionalism, which underpin Eurosceptic discourses, are sustained and reproduced and offers an account of their enduring, affective power amongst the British population. It is in this context that it was possible for pro-Brexit campaigners to assemble and enthuse a new coalition of voters sufficient to deliver a 'leave' majority on 23 June 2016.
