The Anthropocene in Global Media - Neutralizing the Risk (Paperback): Leslie Sklair The Anthropocene in Global Media - Neutralizing the Risk (Paperback)
Leslie Sklair
R1,364 Discovery Miles 13 640 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This book offers the first systematic study of how the 'Anthropocene' is reported in mass media globally, drawing parallels between the use (or misuse) of the term and the media's attitude towards the associated issues of climate change and global warming. Identifying the potential dangers of the Anthropocene provides a useful path into a variety of issues that are often ignored, misrepresented, or sidelined by the media. These dangers are widely discussed in the social sciences, environmental humanities, and creative arts, and this book includes chapters on how the contributions of these disciplines are reported by the media. Our results suggest that the natural science and mass media establishments, and the business and political interests which underpin them, tend to lean towards optimistic reassurance (the 'good' Anthropocene), rather than pessimistic alarmist stories, in reporting the Anthropocene. In this volume, contributors explore how dangerous this 'neutralizing' of the Anthropocene is in undermining serious global action in the face of the potential existential risks confronting humanity. The book presents results from media in more than 100 countries in all major languages across the globe. It covers the reporting of key environmental issues, such as the impact of climate change and global warming on oceans, forests, soil, biodiversity, and the biosphere. We offer explanations for differences and similarities in how the media report the Anthropocene in different regions of the world. In doing so, the book argues that, though it is still controversial, the idea of the Anthropocene helps to concentrate minds and behaviour in confronting ongoing ecological (and Coronavirus) crises. The Anthropocene in Global Media will be of interest to students and scholars of environmental studies, media and communication studies, and the environmental humanities, and all those who are concerned about the survival of humans on planet Earth.

Social Media and Genre Studies - An Investigation of Facebook and Twitter Higher Education Web Pages (Hardcover): Thomas Kenny Social Media and Genre Studies - An Investigation of Facebook and Twitter Higher Education Web Pages (Hardcover)
Thomas Kenny
R2,686 Discovery Miles 26 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates whether Facebook and Twitter have become a genre of media for higher education institutions. Thomas Kenny has conducted a mixed-methods study using a combination of content analysis and interviews with social media employees to explore the purpose, form, and functionality of these web pages. Ultimately, Kenny argues that while institutional web pages on Facebook and Twitter do constitute a genre, each is a separate and distinct platform that works differently with varying goals, structure, and effectiveness associated with them. Scholars of communication, information studies, media studies, journalism, and higher education will find this book of particular interest.

News Media and the Financial Crisis - How Elite Journalism Undermined the Case for a Paradigm Shift (Hardcover): Adam Cox News Media and the Financial Crisis - How Elite Journalism Undermined the Case for a Paradigm Shift (Hardcover)
Adam Cox
R1,649 Discovery Miles 16 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores how leading news media responded to the 2008 financial crisis and its aftermath, showing how journalists regularly framed discussions about post-crisis regulatory reform in ways that reinforced the same market liberal policy paradigm that had ushered in the crisis. Drawing on an analysis of nearly three years of news coverage and on interviews with journalists who covered the financial crash for major media groups, Adam Cox demonstrates how this framing of issues, often focusing on the costs of tighter regulation rather than the preventive benefits, formed the basis of a post-crisis narrative in the United States that undermined the role of the state, despite the wreckage that had just occurred. He looks at how state actors, think tanks and the financial industry worked in concert to encourage such a narrative, ultimately lending support to a market liberal worldview that was being seriously challenged for the first time in decades. While highlighting journalists' ability to resist agenda-building efforts by powerful actors, this book offers a methodology for considering media narratives based on quantitative analysis of framing patterns. News Media and the Financial Crisis is aimed at students and researchers working at the intersection of communications, journalism, political economy and public policy.

The Construction of News in a Polarised State - Maltese Advocacy Journalism (Hardcover): Adrian Hillman The Construction of News in a Polarised State - Maltese Advocacy Journalism (Hardcover)
Adrian Hillman
R1,663 Discovery Miles 16 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Taking a qualitative approach based on original case studies, this book offers a detailed overview of the contemporary media system in Malta. Three Maltese news organisations are examined to understand the editorial routines, ownership and management structures, and social and cultural factors that affect the day-to-day business of creating news. In-depth interviews with key stakeholders of each organisation are conducted alongside qualitative textual analysis of the content they publish. Contrary to previous research, the work finds that advocacy continues to dominate Maltese journalism, indicating that the country has retained similarities to other media systems within its geographic region. While recognising that the gold standard in journalism is judged to be objectivity and balance, a case is made for a responsible, measured form of advocacy journalism to extend media diversity and contribute to a high level of national political engagement. Presenting an informed case for the need to pay closer attention to small states, especially at a time when many countries are seen to be becoming increasingly socially and politically divided, The Construction of News in a Polarised State is an insightful text for scholars and academics in the fields of media and communication studies, political science, and sociology.

Media Power and Global Television News - The Role of Al Jazeera English (Hardcover): Saba Bebawi Media Power and Global Television News - The Role of Al Jazeera English (Hardcover)
Saba Bebawi
R4,623 Discovery Miles 46 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Middle East has been a particular focus of global crisis reporting. Yet, international coverage of these conflicts has historically been presented through a 'Western' perspective. The absence of Arab voices in the global public sphere has created a discursive gap between the Middle East and the rest of the world. The arrival of Al Jazeera English might, therefore, be regarded as an attempt to bridge this gap by broadcasting discourses from and about the Arab world. Using a framing analysis of selected news reports by Al Jazeera English before and after the so-called 'Arab Spring' protests, this book considers Al Jazeera English's position in the global news environment and identifies the extent to which it addresses this gap between the Arab and global spheres.

Celebrity and New Media - Gatekeeping Success (Hardcover): Stephanie Patrick Celebrity and New Media - Gatekeeping Success (Hardcover)
Stephanie Patrick
R4,493 Discovery Miles 44 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book looks back to the early days of new and social media, to examine the potential threat that such technologies and platforms posed to the mainstream corporate media's gatekeeping, and its ability to exploit, humiliate, and even violate famous women Drawing on her own experiences working as part of this gatekeeping system, Stephanie Patrick argues that, in order to combat this threat, the mainstream media doubled down on gendered narratives of meritocracy that legitimized certain (male) celebrities over others Using a range of case studies spanning "old" media sites and "new," including Disney, Playboy, and reality television, this book demonstrates that sexual exploitation and violation could be considered constitutive of female celebrity, rather than a side effect Patrick's case studies include some of America's most (in)famous celebrities, including Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, Anna Nicole Smith, Paris Hilton, and Donald Trump, urging readers to question their assumptions about these figures and their public trajectories This nuanced exploration of patriarchal capitalism and women's ongoing sexual exploitation by the media will be an important reference for scholars and students of digital and new media, journalism, celebrity studies and gender studies

Sex, Feminism and Lesbian Desire in Women's Magazines (Paperback): Kate Farhall Sex, Feminism and Lesbian Desire in Women's Magazines (Paperback)
Kate Farhall
R1,406 Discovery Miles 14 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines evolving pop culture representations of sex and relationships from the 1970s onwards, to demonstrate parallels between the strength of the feminist movement and positive portrayals of women's sexuality. In charting changes in the sex and relationship content of women's magazines over time, this analysis reveals that despite surface-level changes in sexual and relationship content, the underlying paradigm of hetero-monogamy remains unchanged. Despite a seemingly more diverse, empowered and liberated sexuality for women in contemporary magazines, in reality, such feminist rhetoric masks an enduring model of sexuality, which rests on women's sexual and emotional maintenance of male partners and their own self-objectification and self-surveillance. Where substantive changes can be identified, they rise and fall in tandem with feminism. By demonstrating this empirical relationship between cultural products and feminist organising, the book validates an assumption that has rarely been tested: that a feminist social milieu improves cultural narratives about sexuality for women. Sex, Feminism and Lesbian Desire builds on ground-breaking feminist texts such as Susan Faludi's Backlash to present an empirically focused, comprehensive study interrogating changes in content over the lifetime of women's magazines. By charting the representation of sex and relationships in two women's magazines-Cosmopolitan and Cleo-since the 1970s through an analysis of over 6,500 magazine pages and 1,500 articles, this timely work interrogates-and ultimately complicates-the apparent linear progression of feminism. This book is suitable for researchers and students in women's and gender studies, queer studies, LGBT studies, media studies, cultural studies and sociology.

Reporting Mental Illness in China (Paperback): Guy Ramsay Reporting Mental Illness in China (Paperback)
Guy Ramsay
R1,384 Discovery Miles 13 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines how Chinese-language newspapers across greater China report on severe mental illness, and why they do so in the ways they do, given that reporting in local newspapers can strongly influence how Chinese readers view the illness. By assessing how the reporting in three leading broadsheet newspapers from mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan constructs the illness, the book considers how the distinct social and political histories of the three culturally Chinese communities shape the reporting, and whether it bears out or contests the intense stigma against the illness that prevails locally. The findings can usefully encourage and inform attempts to humanise, include, and empower those with a severe mental illness across greater China and the global Chinese diaspora. Employing a well-tested, transparent discourse analytic approach, the book also includes numerous Chinese-English bilingual news report extracts to illustrate its claims. As such, Reporting Mental Illness in China will be of interest to sinologists, discourse analysts, mental health professionals and public health authorities across the globe, especially in places where there are large Chinese-speaking populations.

Networked - A Contemporary History of News in Transition (Hardcover, New): A. Russell Networked - A Contemporary History of News in Transition (Hardcover, New)
A. Russell
R1,684 Discovery Miles 16 840 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Journalism, what happened? In the last decade, the industry and the profession have been rocked to the core. Newspapers as consumer product are as ripe for comic mocking and satire as are the techniques of the journalism profession. The contemporary death and life of journalism is the story of an historic cultural transition. We have lived through the end of the mass-media era and the beginning of the networked-media era. We took in news one way for a century and we simply don't do it like that anymore. Networked: A Contemporary History of News in Transition examines this moment in journalism, the conditions that brought it about and the characteristics that have shaped it and will shape its future. In crafting this sophisticated yet accessible study, new-media scholar Adrienne Russell draws on personal interviews with journalists and analysts at the center of the shift, examines innovative and revealing digital news projects, and underlines larger cultural changes that reflect the new news reality. Networked also examines emergent journalism practices that suggest the forces at work and the stakes involved in developments we have all experienced but, caught up in the rush of change, have had limited perspective to interpret.

The Future of the Presidency, Journalism, and Democracy - After Trump (Hardcover): Robert E. Gutsche, Jr. The Future of the Presidency, Journalism, and Democracy - After Trump (Hardcover)
Robert E. Gutsche, Jr.
R4,801 Discovery Miles 48 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume examines the effects of Donald Trump's presidency on journalistic practices, rhetoric, and discourses. Rooted in critical theory and cultural studies, it asks what life may be like without Trump, not only for journalism but also for American society more broadly. The book places perspectives and tensions around the Trump presidency in one spot, focusing on the underlying ideological forces in tensions around media trust, Trumpism, and the role of journalism in it all. It explores how journalists dealt with racist rhetoric from the White House, relationships between the Office of the President and social media companies, citizens, and journalists themselves, while questioning whether journalism has learned the right lessons for the future. More importantly, chapters on liberal media "bias," the First 100 Days of the Biden Presidency, gender, and race, and how journalists should adopt measures to "reduce harm" hint as to where politics and journalism may go next. Reshaping the scholarly and public discourse about where we are headed in terms of the presidency and publics, social media, and journalism, this book will be an important resource for scholars and graduate students of journalism, media studies, communication studies, political science, race and ethnic studies and sociology.

Celebrity Bromances - Constructing, Interpreting and Utilising Personas (Hardcover): Celia Lam, Jackie Raphael Celebrity Bromances - Constructing, Interpreting and Utilising Personas (Hardcover)
Celia Lam, Jackie Raphael
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This comprehensive work presents a thorough exploration of celebrity 'bromances,' interrogating how bromances are portrayed in media and consumed by audiences to examine themes of celebrity persona, performativity, and authenticity. The authors examine how the performance of intimate male friendships functions within broadly 'Western' celebrity culture from three primary perspectives: construction of persona; interactions with audiences and fans; and commodification. Case studies from film and television are used to illustrate the argument that, regardless of their authenticity (real or staged), bromances are useful for engaging audiences and creating an extension of entertainment beyond the film the actors originally sought to promote. The first truly interdisciplinary study of its kind, this book will be of great interest to scholars and students of communications, advertising, marketing, Internet studies, media, journalism, cultural studies, and film and television.

Reporting Immigration Conflict - Opportunities for Peace Journalism (Hardcover): Mariely Valentin-Llopis Reporting Immigration Conflict - Opportunities for Peace Journalism (Hardcover)
Mariely Valentin-Llopis
R2,692 Discovery Miles 26 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Reporting Immigration Conflict: Opportunities for Peace Journalism, Mariely Valentin-Llopis examines the role of American and Mexican media in promoting harsh views against Central American migrants. This examination focuses on the U.S. southwestern border crossing conflict in 2014 and 2019, both separate consequential periods in time. Valentin-Llopis contextualizes migrants' plight with careful consideration to unaccompanied minor migrants and the family separation crisis. As a counterpoint, the author also takes the news content analysis through a historical journey to when news reporters seemingly bent traditional journalism principles to protect Cuban children refugees fleeing the Castro regime and communism, showing that it is possible to provide fair depictions of migrants and their struggles. Valentin-Llopis challenges journalism's traditional approach to news production by introducing the peace journalism rubric to immigration reporting. Scholars of international relations, journalism, history, and minority studies will find this book particularly useful, while media practitioners in the field can also find practical approaches to transforming their work for the benefit of peace solutions to pressing transnational conflicts.

Andrew Coopersmith
R536 Discovery Miles 5 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An intriguing picture of life during the Civil War, through the newspapers of the period. Delving into an untapped source to tell the story of the Civil War from an entirely new and fascinating perspective, Fighting Words provides a sweeping history of the conflict through colorful, idiosyncratic, and highly opinionated newspaper accounts from all sides of the conflict. Coopersmith's innovative new study is a reminder of the way in which, then as now, our understanding of the world is shaped by and powerfully reflected in the media. Lavishly illustrated with more than one hundred facsimile reproductions from the newspapers themselves, many never before available to a contemporary audience, Fighting Words includes accounts of such events as the capture and occupation of New Orleans, the drive toward emancipation, the enlistment of black soldiers, the New York City draft riots, class conflict in the Confederacy, and the assassination of President Lincoln. Educational and entertaining, rousing and often contradictory, it reveals the vastly different priorities, worldviews, and political objectives that shaped the war and its outcome.

The Language of Journalism - A Multi-Genre Perspective (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Angela Smith, Michael Higgins The Language of Journalism - A Multi-Genre Perspective (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Angela Smith, Michael Higgins
R3,985 Discovery Miles 39 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Language of Journalism (2nd edition) provides lively and accessible tools to understand and analyse the language of journalism. The authors explain how language develops across divergent media platforms, old and new, by looking at the differences across various forms of journalism - including broadcast, magazine, newspaper, sports, radio, and online and citizen. As well as introducing the reader to the principles and methods of discourse analysis and how it can be applied to media, the book addresses the dynamic interplay between the emerging linguistic forms of social media and the journalistic field. With this new edition, the authors draw upon a range of international examples, including from the USA, India, Australia, China and the UK. They focus on an exploration of how social media is incorporated into the journalistic output of print media, with a particular focus on 'clickbait'. This edition also focuses on the global ambitions of online newspapers - such as the Daily Mail and the Guardian - which are UK based, but have Australian and US subsections.
