Rhind's Etching Balls are the traditional form of ground that can be applied directly to a warmed plate and spread with a roller or dabber. This hard ball ground can be smoked to darken, making it easier to see your drawing, and takes fine lines and cross-hatching without chipping or foul biting.
Lawrence Resin Powder is used to make aquatint in etching, a precise method of creating tone. Made with colophony rosin, a natural powdered pine resin, the grains are dusted on to the etching plate either in an aquatint box, or by gently shaking through muslin. Once the grains are heated, they melt and adhere to the plate, creating tiny islands of acid resist around which you can etch your plate to varying degrees.
It is a natural substance so the particle size can vary. Wear a dust mask when using.

Lawrence Letterpress Relief Ink is a simple, traditional formulation of pigments finely ground in linseed oil. Ideal for wood engraving and letterpress printing.
The range offers a sophisticated selection of rich, subtly toned black inks, specifically designed for wood engraving and all letterpress techniques. Each ink in this range is carefully formulated with pigments from deep greens to striking graphite shades, including the purest Carbon Black for those seeking a classic black.
The traditional blend of finely ground pigments and linseed oil ensures optimal viscosity, preventing ink from squashing while achieving excellent paper penetration for crisp, smooth prints. These inks perform exceptionally well whether printed by hand or machine, providing consistent, professional results.
Founded in 1859, TN Lawrence & Son has been a trusted name in fine art materials, delivering unparalleled quality to printmakers worldwide.
Lawrence Lump Resin is used to make aquatint in etching, a precise method of creating tone. Made with natural pine resin, it can be melted as part of making your own etching ground or used for making aquatint where the grains are dusted onto the etching plate either in an aquatint box or by gently shaking through muslin. Once the grains are heated, they melt and adhere to the plate, creating tiny islands of acid resist around which you can etch your plate to varying degrees.
The beauty of grinding your own resin powder from the lump form is that you can precisely control the appearance of your aquatint with a variation of grain, lifting the tonal areas from too flat an appearance.
Wear a dust mask when using.
Lawrence’s Rhinds Stop Out Varnish is a traditional strong bitumen-based stopping out varnish. It dries with a very dark and opaque finish. Appropriate for backing the plate as well as stopping out areas not to be bitten during etching.
Lawrence Sugar Lift Solution is a traditional saturated sugar recipe for use in etching. Apply with brush or dip pen to your thoroughly degreased etching plate to create painterly marks. When dry, paint over with stop-out or dark straw-hat varnish. Use in conjunction with aquatint to add tone, or without to create areas of open bite.
Lawrence Student Quality Rollers offer an economical option, especially if you would still like to make use of the 25-30 shore durethane. Both the student rubber and the student durathene are 38mm in diameter, good for smaller projects or detail, and both are lighter in weight than the artist quality rollers.
With it's translucent emerald green appearance, durathene is ultra smooth and soft and is made from a new generation of elastomer. The student quality rubber rollers are harder than the artist quality, at 65-70 shore and perfect for beginners or student classes. Frames are made from wood and metal components and are assembled in the UK.
