Speedball’s Speedy-Carve Blocks are designed for relief printmaking. They have a soft, putty-like surface which is easier to cut than traditional linoleum, and are designed for use with lino-cutting tools. As they are flexible, Speedy-Carve Blocks can be used to print onto flat or curved surfaces. As in lino-cutting, the desired design is cut in reverse into the surface of the block with gouges or knives. Water-soluble or oil-based ink is then transferred to the raised, uncut areas of the block using a roller/brayer. The design can be printed onto paper or fabric, in a press or by hand. The blocks are Latex-free.Dimensions: 10x15 cmThickness: 0.6 cm
The water-based, high-quality aqua-Linoprint colours contain natural binders such as gum Arabic as well as organic/inorganic pigments. They are easy to apply due to optimum open-times and result in even, sharp prints with fast drying times (wipe-resistant after approx. 15 minutes).
This odorless and water soluble lino print color is easy to use an offers an excellent introduction to lino printing. The selected colors offer even printing results when used directly from the tube or mixed with each other, and are suitable for educational purposes as a result of the color properties and the good value for money. The color palette can be expanded extensively by mixing the colors.
Lozenge Gravers are used by wood engravers and copper engravers. The face of the tool is lozenge-shaped and will cut a line deeper than it is wide.
Rockers are used to prepare metal plates for mezzotints. By repeatedly working the tool over the surface of the plate in a rocking motion, the printmaker can create a smooth carpet of burrs, which will hold ink and show up as a dark area when the plate is printed. This rough surface can then be smoothed with a scraper or burnisher, which will lighten the print in those areas.EC Lyons Rocker Weights are used to weigh rockers down. This makes the process of preparing a plate for mezzotint significantly easier, since it is not neccessary to push the rocker down onto the plate. These weights come with screws to attach them to a Lyons rocker.
Akua Intaglio Ink was originally formulated for intaglio printmaking, however this ink can also be applied with a brayer for relief printmaking, monotype, and collagraphs; and it will print from any plastic, wood, linoleum or metal plate. It is a soy based ink which is made with high quality lightfast pigments. The inks have a thick consistency with minimal water content and contain no toxic driers - this means a longer working time. The ink cleans up easily with a dry rag followed by soap and water. Inexpensive liquid dish detergent can be used. Never use toxic solvents. Prints can be re-soaked immediately after printing if handled carefully. Once the print is dry, Akua Intaglio is permanent. Ink will never skin or harden in the jar or the ink slab, meaning minimal ink is wasted. Wiping the plate with Akua Intaglio is easier than wiping oil-based ink, meaning you need to spend less time cleaning up.
Wood engravers use Tint Tools to create incisions on the surface of woodblocks. As woodblocks are inked with a roller, these recessed incisions do not receive ink. They therefore show up white in the final print. This is a medium-fine Tint Tool (#3), designed for cutting straight lines of a constant width. The trade engravers of the Nineteenth century referred to a series of parallel lines as a 'tint'. They used tints to depict colour and form; by varying the width and spacing of the lines that made up their tints, they were able to attain a sophisticated range of mid-tones, between the white of the paper and the black of the ink. This tool is not designed to cut curves; use a Graver or (preferably) a Spitsticker for that. The shank of the tool may be damaged if you force it to make corners. This tool was made from high carbon tool steel in the United States by E.C. Lyons. It is supplied factory-sharp, but it has not been honed to a fine edge. Please note, engraving tools are known by different names in the UK and the United States. Tint Tools are known as 'Angle Tints' or 'Angle Tint Tools' in the US.
Wood engravers use Square Scorpers to create incisions on the surface of woodblocks. As woodblocks are inked with a roller, these incisions do not receive ink, and therefore show up white in the final print. Because the tip of a Scorper is flat, rather than pointed (as Spitstickers and Gravers are), scorpers of larger sizes are used to clear large areas of woodblocks (often round the edge of the design, or at the corners of a block) so that they will not print. This is a medium-fine Square Scorper (#39). It has strait sides, which means that it will cut a line of a constant width. Because the tip of the cutting face is completely flat, lines cut with this tool will begin and end abruptly, with a square edge. They will not swell or taper, like lines made with a spitsticker or a graver might; nor will they be rounded at the ends, like cuts made with a Round Scorper.Scorpers are often used to lighten areas of a print by stippling: repeatedly pecking at the woodblock with the tip of the tool, so that the surface bears a carpet of tiny incisions. This tool will create large, angular, squarish dots; for rounded dots, you will need a Round Scorper. This tool was made from high carbon tool steel in the United States by E.C. Lyons. It is supplied factory-sharp, but it has not been honed to a fine edge. Please note, engraving tools are known by different names in the U.K. and the United States. Square Scorpers are known as 'Flat Gravers' in the U.S.A.
Square Gravers are used by wood engravers and copper engravers. The face of the tool is square-shaped and will cut a line as deep as it is wide. This is a fine Square Graver (#1).Copper engravers use Square Gravers to create incisions on the surface of metal plates, which will hold ink during the printing process. The lines thus show up as black in the final print.

Based on carefully selected pigments and the latest advances in polymer technology, Permaset delivers pure colour, a superior soft handle and excellent durability in an easy to use ink that is environmentally friendly. Permaset Aqua breaks new ground; a water based ink that offers superior performance and eliminates the historical trade-off between printability performance on the screen and post-production performance of the finished garment including user comfort and safety and environmental sustainability. This 100% solvent free range is environmentally friendly. The pigments provide intense, vibrant colour, rich in coverage and deliver exceptional colour yield. The unique polymer binding the pigment to the fabric delivers exceptionally soft handle and yet shows excellent resistance to damage by rub, wash and dry-cleaning, all without the need for additives.
For printmakers interested in non-toxic printmaking, Caligo are pleased to offer a new and innovative range of oil-based inks that can be washed away with liquid soap and water, without the need for harmful and often more expensive solvents. They call these inks ‘safe wash’ and they are available for both relief and intaglio printing.Caligo Safe Wash Etching inks are suitable for all types of intaglio printing, for example, etching, aquatint, line engraving etc. This range does not contain any driers. If you want faster drying rates, you can add a small amount of cobalt or manganese driers.

The Essdee Soft Lino Roller is designed for use in relief printmaking, and is an effective tool for inking lino sheets and softer surfaces such as Speedball Speedy Carve Blocks.Developed for relief printing, this softer 40 shore synthetic rubber roller is resistant to printers chemicals and not affected by exposure to daylight. Designed to give a more compliant coverage than hard rubber material, it is more forgiving on uneven surfaces. It is a favourite with certain printing methods but needs extra care in storage to prevent indentation to its soft surface.
Speedball Professional Relief Inks are lightfast and archival oil-based printmaking inks which can be washed up with just soap and water. These inks are designed for all types of relief printing, especially linocut and woodcut. This is an 8oz (236.5ml) tin of Titanium White (PW6, Speedball Lightfastness rating I). It is suitable for mixing with any of the Speedball Professional Relief Ink colours. To increase the transparency of this ink, add Speedball Professional Relief Transparent Base. The ink can be stiffened with talc or magnesium carbonate, and thinned with water. Because the ink can be thinned with water, it is preferable to print onto dry paper.
Somerset is a world leading traditional printmaking paper. Mould made from 100% cotton to high archival standards. The surface has a gentle texture, soft and good-tempered nature, and is a strong and stable enough sheet to ensure excellent printing. It remains flat after printing and offers durability and long life to finished editions of work. All materials are screened in the mill to ensure minimal environmental effect. No hazardous chemicals are released into the water ways. Pulps are sourced from sustainable sources (no rainforests are harmed in making the papers), and the cotton linters are a by-product from the textile industry.
The smooth surface and soft texture of the SoftCut lino sheets makes cutting easy: blades will glide through with minimal effort. SoftCut prints well onto a range of surfaces including paper, card and fabric. It can even print onto curved surfaces due to its flexibility. The surface of the lino is cut away using special lino cutters or a knife to form the basis of the lino print. The block is inked up with a roller (known as a brayer) and this creates a positive image when printed onto paper or fabric. The printing process can be done by hand or with a press. You can use water-based lino ink, oil-based lino ink, or a block printing medium mixed with paint.
Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Inks are an oil-based range of bold, permanent colours designed to be with washed up with soap and water. They are an opaque ink with excellent coverage and by adding Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Transparent Extender you can create transparent colours while maintain the inks viscosity. These inks are designed to print onto smooth fabrics that do not possess a heavy texture or stretch such as cotton, linen, broadcloth or denim. Nylon and canvas are not recommended. Your printing block can be lino, wood or any similar surface and soft rubber rollers or brayers are ideally suited for inking the block.Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Inks will dry to the touch overnight depending on your climate and they do not require any setting with heat. It is recommended you wait 4-7 days before washing your fabrics after printing.
This new-generation acid resist has been specially designed as part of the acrylic-resist etching system. The lines and marks which can be generated by using the Lascaux Hard resist are comparable to those offered by traditional hard grounds. It is painted on the plate in a thin even layer which when dry can be drawn into with etching tools. As the waxy resist allows free movement of the etching needle, delicate line drawings can be made. The resist may be used in its clear form or coloured after application. Broader open marks can also be created in the layer of resist. Lascaux Hard resist is water-soluble, ready to use, nontoxic and suitable for use on copper, brass, zinc, steel and aluminium. Plates should be correctly prepared, whether unbitten or previously etched (e.g. aquatint, deep open bite). The resist is highly acid resistant and durable. It is compatible with the other Lascaux resists and photopolymer resists such as Photec. Lascaux Hard resist may also be used to create a variety of effects on collagraph plates
