Caligo Safe Wash Relief Inks are suitable for all types of relief printing, for example, linocut, woodcut, wood engraving, photopolymer and letterpress. Safe Wash Inks are oil-based, this means you can still use many of the modifiers used with traditional inks. For example you can use Magnesium Carbonate / Talc, Cobalt / Manganese Driers, or Caligo Wiping Compound / Tack Reducer etc.
Very dark and opaque finish. For use with etching plates, this varnish is appropriate for backing the plate as well as stopping out (i. e concealing) areas of the plate where the etching process is not required.

This innovative range of oil-based inks can be washed away with liquid soap and water, without the need for harmful and often more expensive solvents. Ideal for printmakers interested in a safe and non-toxic alternative. Caligo 'safe wash' inks are available for both relief and intaglio printing. These grey sheets / blocks of lino are especially made for "linocut" relief printmaking. They are 3.2mm thick, have a fabric backing, and are available in a range of sizes and packs. The surface of the lino is cut away using special lino cutters or a knife to form the basis of the lino print. The block is inked up with a roller (known as a brayer) and this creates a positive image when printed onto paper or fabric. The printing process can be done by hand or with a press. You can use water-based lino ink, oil-based lino ink, or a block printing medium mixed with paint.

Well engineered portable presses from Italy with solid steel rollers and 3mm thick metal bed. Lifting up the top roller is for relief printing only, you will not be able to print anything but thinner intaglio plates on this press, optimally up to 1mm metal with a decent bevel on or thinner 0.8mm plates like our econimy zinc or transparent printing plates. The Fome presses work well for line etching, drypoint, monoprint and relief. It must be stressed that these small press will not print with the same pressure as a larger heavier studio press. If you have designed your prints with your plates, inks, paper using a large heavy press, you will not necessarily be able to reproduce them on these small presses. Putting too much pressure on the presses can damage them. Please Note: The manufacturer recommends to attach this press to a table so you can get enough leverage for proper printing function.SpecificationsWeight: 6 Kg Length: 25 cm Width: 23.5 cm Height: 17 cm Width of roller: 18 cm Diam. lower roller: 3.5 cm Diam. upper roller: 3.5 cm Metal plate: 18.6 x 32 x 0.3 cmMaximum board or lino thickness: 1.7cmRead our series of blog posts about setting up and using the Fome School Etching Press.Other Fome Presses available here.Replacement Fome Felt Mats available here.

The Essdee Soft Lino Roller is designed for use in relief printmaking, and is an effective tool for inking lino sheets and softer surfaces such as Speedball Speedy Carve Blocks.Developed for relief printing, this softer 40 shore synthetic rubber roller is resistant to printers chemicals and not affected by exposure to daylight. Designed to give a more compliant coverage than hard rubber material, it is more forgiving on uneven surfaces. It is a favourite with certain printing methods but needs extra care in storage to prevent indentation to its soft surface.

The Akua Retarder has two purposes. A few drops mixed into Akua Liquid Pigment helps transfer ink onto dry paper during the printing process. It can also be added to Akua Liquid Pigment to prevent the ink from drying on the monotype plate thereby extending the working time of the ink. - A clear liquid, it is ideal for hot, dry or very cold studio conditions. Only a tiny amount is needed, too much will cause the ink to bead. It is not suitable for use with Akua Intaglio Inks. Easy clean up with water. -
A great starter set which contains some of the essential items needed for quality printmaking. Use with monotype brushwork or roll up, intaglio, etching collograph and more. This set contains three Akua Intaglio Inks, which are high quality, lightfast pigments. The inks have a thick consistency with minimal water content and contain no toxic driers – this means a longer working time. The set also contains Phthalo Akua Liquid Pigment Ink which originally was developed for monotype printmaking and is a fluid concentrated pigment. Included in this set are also two modifiers, the Transparent Base Modifier is designed to have Akua Liquid Pigment added to it which will not only thicken the Liquid Pigment but will give you the ability to create new intaglio or relief colours. The set also contains a Blending Medium which can be used with both the Akua Liquid Pigment and the Akua Intaglio Ink - it is a clear, colourless liquid and is to be used to thin the ink for brushwork, wash effects or used as a resist for viscosity monotypes. There is also a handy instruction guide.
