When metal plates are engraved for intaglio printmaking, small ridges of cut-away metal called 'burrs' will be left either side of each linear incision. This scraper has a triangular blade, and is designed to be used during intaglio printmaking processes, to scrape away burrs thrown up during the engraving process without damaging the plate. Its sharp face can also be used to scrape and lower the plate surface. It has a wooden handle, and is made of high carbon steel.
Cyanotype is the ‘original’ sun-printing process, one of the earliest photographic techniques. Discovered in 1842 and distinctive for producing rich, Prussian blue monochromatic prints, it was popular well into the 20th century as an inexpensive method for reproducing photographs, documents, maps and plans (hence the enduring architectural term blueprint) and famously, for making impressions of biological specimens in the field (photograms). Harness the power of the sun to make detailed prints from virtually any object that casts a shadow: tools, toys, plants, leaves, stones, sand, string, lace, etc. Simply place the object on the sensitised surface and expose it to sunlight. Use a digitally-printed photographic negative (an inverted black and white photo inkjet-printed onto a transparency) instead of an object to create full-resolution photographs on paper or fabric. Great for photographers, mixed media artists, printmakers, quilters, kids and more. The cyanotype process is easy, forgiving, quick, magical and fun. It can be used on any natural fibre/porous surface including cotton, linen, silk, canvas, wood, paper, wood and leather. This set contains enough chemistry to make approximately sixty-five 8in x 10in prints on paper or fifty 8in x 10in prints on fabric. The two components are: Part A - Potassium Ferricyanide (a red iron salt used with Ferric Ammonium Citrate for cyanotype) and Part B - Ferric Ammonium Citrate (a light-sensitive iron salt used with Potassium Ferricyanide for cyanotype).
Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Inks are an oil-based range of bold, permanent colours designed to be with washed up with soap and water. They are an opaque ink with excellent coverage and by adding Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Transparent Extender you can create transparent colours while maintain the inks viscosity. These inks are designed to print onto smooth fabrics that do not possess a heavy texture or stretch such as cotton, linen, broadcloth or denim. Nylon and canvas are not recommended. Your printing block can be lino, wood or any similar surface and soft rubber rollers or brayers are ideally suited for inking the block.Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Inks will dry to the touch overnight depending on your climate and they do not require any setting with heat. It is recommended you wait 4-7 days before washing your fabrics after printing.
This innovative range of oil-based inks can be washed away with liquid soap and water, without the need for harmful and often more expensive solvents. Ideal for printmakers interested in a safe and non-toxic alternative. Caligo 'safe wash' inks are available for both relief and intaglio printing. Contains a small percentage of driers (less than 1%).Caligo Safe Wash Relief Inks are suitable for all types of relief printing, for example, linocut, woodcut, wood engraving, photopolymer and letterpress. Safe Wash Inks are oil-based, this means you can still use many of the modifiers used with traditional inks. For example you can use Magnesium Carbonate / Talc, Cobalt / Manganese Driers, or Caligo Wiping Compound / Tack Reducer etc. We also stock Caligo Safe Wash Oil - a washable oil that you can add to any ink from the Safe Wash range when you need to thin your ink a little.
Burnishers are used to flatten a section of a metal plate in order to remove engraved or etched patterns and lines. This 'erases' the marks on this area. This ball-burnisher is designed to be used for detailed work. If you wish to flatten an extensive area, you would be better off using a straight burnisher. This tool is made of high carbon tool steel and is manufactured by EC Lyons.
This traditional easy-cut art-print lino is specially made for carving. Available in a variety of sizes and also pre-mounted onto 18mm fibreboard blocks, giving extra rigidity allowing the user to achieve consistent, flat prints.
These grey sheets / blocks of lino are especially made for "linocut" relief printmaking. They are 3.2mm thick, have a fabric backing, and are available in a range of sizes and packs. The surface of the lino is cut away using special lino cutters or a knife to form the basis of the lino print. The block is inked up with a roller (known as a brayer) and this creates a positive image when printed onto paper or fabric. The printing process can be done by hand or with a press. You can use water-based lino ink, oil-based lino ink, or a block printing medium mixed with paint.

The smooth surface and soft texture of the SoftCut lino sheets makes cutting easy: blades will glide through with minimal effort. SoftCut prints well onto a range of surfaces including paper, card and fabric. It can even print onto curved surfaces due to its flexibility. The surface of the lino is cut away using special lino cutters or a knife to form the basis of the lino print. The block is inked up with a roller (known as a brayer) and this creates a positive image when printed onto paper or fabric. The printing process can be done by hand or with a press. High quality Swiss made carving tools suitable for either lino or wood cutting. Each tool is made from chrome vanadium steel, precisely forged, sharpened and polished for excellent results. Palm-handles are made of hardwood from ecologically managed Swiss forests. Full bolster and square tang for optimal stability. Internal steel ferrule under bolster prevents handle from splitting. Tools are hardened to edge of bevel. Blades electronically hardened to exacting tolerances.

Drypoint Junior Etching Tools are great for those new to engraving. These lightweight tools are made of carbon and alloy steel and are mounted on handles made of the finest beechwood. Practical, beautiful and economical, these tools provide the best possible start to etching. They come in a range of sizes for producing a variety of different effects.
This tool is used to prepare metal plates for mezzotints. By repeatedly working the tool over the surface of the plate in a rocking motion, the printmaker can create a smooth carpet of burrs, which will hold ink and show up as a dark area when the plate is printed. This rough surface can then be smoothed with a scraper or burnisher, which will lighten the print in those areas.EC Lyons rockers are known world wide as the finest mezzotint rockers available. Lyons rockers have handles of stained birch and a tool surface of high carbon tool steel. The density of teeth for a rocker is measured in LPI or 'tooth count', a measure of the number of lines per inch on the cutting face of the tool. This is a fine gauge rocker with a 2.5 inch blade and a tooth count of 100.Please take care when using this tool near the edge of your plates, as unless you have bevelled the edge of the plate it is possible that the tool may slip off or be damaged by the sharp edge.
Pfeil Sharpenin Stones are the ideal tools to sharpen your lino cutting equipment and, in turn, to achieve excellent quality cut marks.
Twisted steel double-ended dry point scribe, used for adding detail or tone to metal plates for intaglio printmaking processes. The line is created as the dry point or needle is dragged or drawn over the plate. If this tool is used to add detail or tone directly to the metal plate (a technique known as 'drypoint'), it will inscribe a line with a slight burr, which will print a blurred, indistinct line. This effect can be controlled by manipulating the angle at which the point meets the plate.
A durable plastic square spatula for inking plates. This spatula strengthened central area for grip.

Lozenge Gravers are used by wood engravers and copper engravers. The face of the tool is lozenge-shaped and will cut a line deeper than it is wide.
For printmakers interested in non-toxic printmaking, Caligo are pleased to offer a new and innovative range of oil-based inks that can be washed away with liquid soap and water, without the need for harmful and often more expensive solvents.
