Speedball’s Speedy-Carve Blocks are designed for relief printmaking. They have a soft, putty-like surface which is easier to cut than traditional linoleum, and are designed for use with lino-cutting tools. As they are flexible, Speedy-Carve Blocks can be used to print onto flat or curved surfaces.

As in lino-cutting, the desired design is cut in reverse into the surface of the block with gouges or knives. Water-soluble or oil-based ink is then transferred to the raised, uncut areas of the block using a roller/brayer. The design can be printed onto paper or fabric, in a press or by hand. The blocks are Latex-free.

Lozenge Gravers are used by wood engravers and copper engravers. The face of the tool is lozenge-shaped and will cut a line deeper than it is wide.

This tool was made from high carbon tool steel in the United States by E.C. Lyons. It is supplied factory-sharp, but it has not been honed to a fine edge.

This tool is used to prepare metal plates for mezzotints. By repeatedly working the tool over the surface of the plate in a rocking motion, the printmaker can create a smooth carpet of burrs, which will hold ink and show up as a dark area when the plate is printed. This rough surface can then be smoothed with a scraper or burnisher, which will lighten the print in those areas.EC Lyons rockers are known world wide as the finest mezzotint rockers available. Lyons rockers have handles of stained birch and a tool surface of high carbon tool steel. The density of teeth for a rocker is measured in LPI or 'tooth count', a measure of the number of lines per inch on the cutting face of the tool. This is a fine gauge rocker with a 2.5 inch blade and a tooth count of 100.Please take care when using this tool near the edge of your plates, as unless you have bevelled the edge of the plate it is possible that the tool may slip off or be damaged by the sharp edge.

The smooth surface and soft texture of the SoftCut lino sheets makes cutting easy: blades will glide through with minimal effort. SoftCut prints well onto a range of surfaces including paper, card and fabric. It can even print onto curved surfaces due to its flexibility. The surface of the lino is cut away using special lino cutters or a knife to form the basis of the lino print. The block is inked up with a roller (known as a brayer) and this creates a positive image when printed onto paper or fabric. The printing process can be done by hand or with a press. Burnishers are used to flatten a section of a metal plate in order to remove engraved or etched patterns and lines. This 'erases' the marks on this area. This ball-burnisher is designed to be used for detailed work. This combination tool is designed to be used in intaglio printmaking processes. Both tools will reduce the ability of an area of a plate to hold ink.One end is a blunt burnishing tool, used for smoothing the face of the metal plate in order to soften engraved lines and remove burrs. The convex stem of the tool, just below the tip (rather than the tip itself) is used for this purpose, in a polishing motion. Japanese double sided vinyl is a great alternative to traditional lino. It is easy to carve and gives a clean cut, the smooth surface gives an even print and it takes fine detail very well. Both the green and the blue sides can be used making it very economical, and the fact that it has a black core means it is very easy to see where you have carved.
