The surface of the lino is cut away using special lino cutters or a knife to form the basis of the lino print. The block is inked up with a roller (known as a brayer) and this creates a positive image when printed onto paper or fabric. The printing process can be done by hand or with a press. You can use water-based lino ink, oil-based lino ink, or a block printing medium mixed with paint.

Made from soft, natural latex gum rubber with a precision-ground finish, Speedball Soft Rubber Brayers are ideal for use with linoleum, vinyl, or wood blocks.  The heavy-duty steel frame provides enhanced durability, and the flexibility of the 40/42 durometer rubber ensures for even ink distribution especially over uneven surfaces. The roller diameter is 30mm and the widths range from 1.5in/38mm to 6in/150mm.  Designed for use with water based and oil based inks. This tool is used to prepare metal plates for mezzotints. By repeatedly working the tool over the surface of the plate in a rocking motion, the printmaker can create a smooth carpet of burrs, which will hold ink and show up as a dark area when the plate is printed. This rough surface can then be smoothed with a scraper or burnisher, which will lighten the print in those areas.EC Lyons rockers are known world wide as the finest mezzotint rockers available. Lyons rockers have handles of stained birch and a tool surface of high carbon tool steel. The density of teeth for a rocker is measured in LPI or 'tooth count', a measure of the number of lines per inch on the cutting face of the tool. This is a fine gauge rocker with a 2.5 inch blade and a tooth count of 100.Please take care when using this tool near the edge of your plates, as unless you have bevelled the edge of the plate it is possible that the tool may slip off or be damaged by the sharp edge.

Burnishers are used to flatten a section of a metal plate in order to remove engraved or etched patterns and lines. This 'erases' the marks on this area. This ball-burnisher is designed to be used for detailed work. If you wish to flatten an extensive area, you would be better off using a straight burnisher.This tool is made of high carbon tool steel and is manufactured by EC Lyons.

They call these inks ‘safe wash’ and they are available for both relief and intaglio printing.Caligo Safe Wash Etching inks are suitable for all types of intaglio printing, for example, etching, aquatint, line engraving etc.This range does not contain any driers. If you want faster drying rates, you can add a small amount of cobalt or manganese driers.

When metal plates are engraved for intaglio printmaking, small ridges of cut-away metal called 'burrs' will be left either side of each linear incision. This scraper has a triangular blade, and is designed to be used during intaglio printmaking processes, to scrape away burrs thrown up during the engraving process without damaging the plate. Its sharp face can also be used to scrape and lower the plate surface.It has a wooden handle, and is made of high carbon steel.

Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Inks are an oil-based range of bold, permanent colours designed to be with washed up with soap and water. They are an opaque ink with excellent coverage and by adding Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Transparent Extender you can create transparent colours while maintain the inks viscosity.These inks are designed to print onto smooth fabrics that do not possess a heavy texture or stretch such as cotton, linen, broadcloth or denim. Nylon and canvas are not recommended. Your printing block can be lino, wood or any similar surface and soft rubber rollers or brayers are ideally suited for inking the block.Speedball’s Fabric Block Printing Inks will dry to the touch overnight depending on your climate and they do not require any setting with heat. It is recommended you wait 4-7 days before washing your fabrics after printing.

Once the drawing fluid is dry, the entire screen surface is then blocked out with System 3 Removable Screen Block, applied by squeegee. Again, once dry, the previously drawn image is washed out in cold water to leave an open-mesh positive image ready for printing. The screens can be reclaimed after printing by washing out the screen block with hot water and soap. Screen Block should be kept upright and stored at normal room temperature.
