Harnessing Value in the Supply Chain - Strategic Sourcing in Action (Hardcover): E Banfield Harnessing Value in the Supply Chain - Strategic Sourcing in Action (Hardcover)
E Banfield
R4,178 Discovery Miles 41 780 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

A definitive roadmap for implementing effective supply chain management

Strategic sourcing redefines the traditional approach to buying and using materials and services. Purchasing and supplier programs are receiving substantial attention in current professional literature, but there is little information on implementing supplier strategies and techniques.

Harnessing Value in the Supply Chain offers a specific, step-by-step approach to the strategic sourcing process, developed by the author at Southern California Edison. This unique reference provides expert guidance on designing, launching, executing, evaluating, and maintaining a sourcing project. It includes illustrations, examples, and templates for immediate use. Finally, supply chain management and strategic sourcing are presented in a usable, comprehensive, and cost-effective framework.

To illustrate this approach, the book describes the experience of Southern California Edison, a utility company that achieved $150 million in annual cost reduction through a strategic sourcing program. The story is told from the perspective of the people who led the revolutionary change at SCE, as wellas the suppliers. A detailed method on how to duplicate SCE's success is included in the book.

This book is unique in that it fully traces a strategic sourcing initiative from conception to implementation—and it is the only book that documents the SCE story. Harnessing Value in the Supply Chain is a powerful tool that will help organizations optimize their resources and develop relationships to sustain effective supply chain management.

Maritime Logistics Value in Knowledge Management (Paperback): Eon-Seong Lee, Dong-Wook Song Maritime Logistics Value in Knowledge Management (Paperback)
Eon-Seong Lee, Dong-Wook Song
R1,377 Discovery Miles 13 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Knowledge management has been widely applied to various industries as a good strategy to help improve firms' performance. As globalisation accelerates and international trade increases more and more, maritime transport operations have become one of the vitalest industries to receive large attention from international managers. This is because the managers have perceived that the maritime transport system is an integrated entity within the global logistics and supply chain, and it should be therefore managed in the most efficient and effective ways possible, as an organic body within a global logistics system. Taking this approach, this book examines how maritime transport operators - such as shipping companies, port terminal operators and freight forwarders - could successfully play a role within the global logistics flow wherein they are embedded by improving their logistic value, i.e. maritime logistics value. As per the objective, the current book suggests a knowledge management based solution. It attempts to systematically investigate what types of knowledge are needed in the maritime logistics industry, how maritime operators could effectively acquire the knowledge, and whether the acquired knowledge would help maritime operators enhance maritime logistics value. This book provides not only comprehensive understandings of knowledge management strategy, but also its practical application to the maritime logistics industry. This would therefore be a useful guidebook for the managers, academics, and undergraduate / postgraduate students in the field of maritime transport and global logistics, to help them to gain comprehensive knowledge of the application of knowledge management strategy to the industry.

Rosy Boardman, Rachel Parker-Strak, Claudia E. Henninger
R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Fashion buying and merchandising has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Aspects such as the advent of new technologies and the changing nature of the industry into one that is faster paced than ever before, as well as the shift towards more ethical and sustainable practices have resulted in a dramatic change of the roles. As a result, contemporary fast fashion retailers do not follow the traditional buying cycle processes step by step, critical paths are wildly different, and there has been a huge increase in 'in-season buying' as a response to heightened consumer demand. This textbook is a comprehensive guide to 21st-century fashion buying and merchandising, considering fast fashion, sustainability, ethical issues, omnichannel retailing, and computer-aided design. It presents an up-to-date buying cycle that reflects key aspects of fashion buying and merchandising, as well as in-depth explanations of fashion product development, trend translation, and sourcing. It applies theoretical and strategic business models to buying and merchandising that have traditionally been used in marketing and management. This book is ideal for all fashion buying and merchandising students, specifically second- and final-year undergraduate as well as MA/MSc fashion students. It will also be useful to academics and practitioners who wish to gain a greater understanding of the industry today.

RFID in the Supply Chain - A Guide to Selection and Implementation (Hardcover): Judith M. Myerson RFID in the Supply Chain - A Guide to Selection and Implementation (Hardcover)
Judith M. Myerson
R4,511 Discovery Miles 45 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Giving organizations the ability to track, secure, and manage items from the time they are raw materials through the life-cycle of the product, radio frequency identification (RFID) makes internal processes more efficient and improves overall supply chain responsiveness. Helping you bring your organization into the future, RFID in the Supply Chain: A Guide to Selection and Implementation explains RFID technology, its applications in SCM, data storage and retrieval, business processes, operational and implementation problems, risks, security and privacy, facility layout, handling systems and methods, and transportation costs. In short, with its soup-to-nuts coverage, the book ensures that your RFID implementation is successful and that you get the most from your investment.

The book discusses the major paradigm shift in product traceability that began with transitioning to RFID technology from bar code technology. It examines the economic feasibility of rolling out RFID and the challenges in supply chain synchronization, customer privacy, security, operations and IT, logistics, program management, education and training, and implementation, as well as what lessons have been learned. The author addresses the RFID business processes needed to analyze and resolve problems the suppliers face when they deal with multiple customers, each with a different mandate, and with their own set of suppliers.

Going beyond the technology and how it has changed supply chain processes, the book includes selection guidelines and implementation examples, such as speed of tag reads versus quality of computer inputs and optimal tag location. The author discusses the implementation of a business processmodel and the separate but equal concerns that business and IT executives have about the implementation of RFID applications. The book also covers security, integrated control management linked to the corporate strategy, and laws and regulations.

R2,319 Discovery Miles 23 190 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

ERP Systems for Manufacturing Supply Chains: Applications, Configuration, and Performance provides insight into the core architecture, modules, and process support of ERP systems used in a manufacturing supply chain. This book explains the building blocks of an ERP system and how they can be used to increase performance of manufacturing supply chains. Starting with an overview of basic concepts of supply chain and ERP systems, the book delves into the core ERP modules that support manufacturing facilities and organizations. It examines each module's structure and functionality as well as the process support the module provides. Cases illustrate how the modules can be applied in manufacturing environments. Also covered is how the ERP modules can be configured to support manufacturing supply chains. Setting up an ERP system to support the supply chain within single manufacturing facility provides insight into how an ERP system is used in the smallest of manufacturing enterprises, as well as lays the foundation for ERP systems in manufacturing organizations. The book then supplies strategies for larger manufacturing enterprises and discusses how ERP systems can be used to support a complete manufacturing supply chain across different facilities and companies. The ERP systems on the market today tend to use common terminology and naming for describing specific functions and data units in the software. However, there are differences among packages. The book discusses various data and functionalities found in different ERP-software packages and uses generic and descriptive terms as often as possible to make these valid for as many ERP systems as possible. Filled with insight into ERP system's core modules and functions, this book shows how ERP systems can be applied to support a supply chain in the smallest of manufacturing organizations that only consist of a single manufacturing facility, as well as large enterprises where the manufacturing supply chain crosses multiple facilities and companies.

Total Quality in the Construction Supply Chain - Safety, Leadership, Total Quality, Lean, and BIM (Paperback): John S Oakland,... Total Quality in the Construction Supply Chain - Safety, Leadership, Total Quality, Lean, and BIM (Paperback)
John S Oakland, Marton Marosszeky
R2,020 Discovery Miles 20 200 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Organizations in the construction industry struggle with three key issues: quality management or better meeting customer expectations, supply chain management or more effectively working with suppliers to provide a seamless service to customers, and knowledge management, the challenge of learning between collaborating organisations and between people working on similar projects around the world. Excellence in these key aspects of business is the hallmark of great companies.

This book tackles each of these themes, demonstrating their significance as strategic concepts for the construction sector and illustrating how development goals in each of the areas can be met. To be successful Total Quality has to impact on the organisation's Performance, which should be measured on a "balanced scorecard," including the results from the customer. This can be achieved through good Planning and improvements in Processes through involvement of the People. These 4Ps combine with the 4Cs - Customer, Culture, Communication and Commitment to provide a model for implementing total quality into construction.
The book brings together, within this consistent theoretical framework, international case studies from all areas of the construction industry. These include examples as diverse as quarrying, construction, design, real estate, land development and regulatory agencies, drawn from the UK, USA, Hong Kong, Singapore Australia and Japan. Through these the authors demonstrate how a total quality or business excellence strategy can be applied in all activities in the construction supply chain to achieve world-class performance.
Written by two of the world's leading experts, in a logical and verypractical style, Total Quality in the Construction Supply Chain offers students and others new to the subject a clearly structured introduction to the concept of quality in the industry, while offering help and guidance to the most experienced professionals. The book should also appeal to people from all areas of the building and construction sector in any country.
* Key management techniques applied specifically to the needs of the construction industry
* International case studies demonstrate how to achieve real and lasting improvements in quality across the industry

Hamed Fazlollahtabar
R1,729 Discovery Miles 17 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is a wide field in which several specialties are included. In general, operations and production management players use SCM to organize the problems and analyze the solution approaches. Due to these points, a reference which can encompass a range of problems and their modelling approaches is required. This book will contain three general sections of forward, reverse, intelligent, and uncertain problems. While the book provides different problems in the three commonly used categories in SCM, it is very helpful for the readers to find out, or adapt their own application studies to the ones given in the book and employ the corresponding modeliing approach.

The Economics of Food Loss in the Produce Industry (Hardcover): Travis Minor, Suzanne Thornsbury, Ashok K. Mishra The Economics of Food Loss in the Produce Industry (Hardcover)
Travis Minor, Suzanne Thornsbury, Ashok K. Mishra
R4,481 Discovery Miles 44 810 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Food loss is a serious issue in the United States. It affects all aspects of the supply chain, from farmers to consumers. While much is already known about loss at the consumer level, our understanding of the amount of food that never makes it to this stage is more limited. The Economics of Food Loss in the Produce Industry focuses on the economics of food loss as they apply to on-farm produce production, and the losses that are experienced early. The book both analyses current food loss literature and presents new empirical research. It draws lessons from those who have encountered these issues by focusing on how past regional or national estimates of food loss have been conducted with varying degrees of success. It includes chapters on several themes: understanding food loss from an economic perspective; efforts to measure food loss; case studies across commodities within the produce industry; and economic risks and opportunities. The commodity case studies provide detailed discussion of factors impacting changes in loss levels within the produce industry, and a wealth of knowledge on strategies and contexts is developed. The book concludes by identifying critical knowledge gaps and establishing future priorities. This book serves as an essential reference guide for academics, researchers, students, legislative liaisons, non-profit associations, and think tank groups in agriculture and agricultural economics.

Buying into the Environment - Experiences, Opportunities and Potential for Eco-procurement (Hardcover): Christoph Erdmenger Buying into the Environment - Experiences, Opportunities and Potential for Eco-procurement (Hardcover)
Christoph Erdmenger
R1,781 Discovery Miles 17 810 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Green purchasing - or eco-procurement - by local and central governments has long been recommended in documents such as Agenda 21 to be a key - although sometimes supplemental-ingredient in the achievement of more environmentally responsible economies. Certainly, sustainable consumption cannot be considered a realistic goal without the full engagement of public authorities. Many initiatives have been undertaken in OECD countries, most successfully in Japan and Denmark where green public purchasing has been proven to be workable and highly effective, while, in other countries, city municipalities have successfully pioneered the development of sophisticated public environmental purchasing policies. However, for the vast majority of countries and their major cities, the potential for green public purchasing remains woefully untapped. A key question is what would be the environmental impact if the majority of cities in Europe replicated the success stories of those leading the way? Public procurement has, after all, been an important tool in achieving other public policy goals such as defence. Why should it not be used as a tool to defend the environment? The RELIEF project, funded by the EU's "City of Tomorrow and Cultural Heritage" programme was established to answer exactly this question: to define the true potential of eco-procurement and to develop a strategy for change in Europe. Buying into the Environment is the result of the research segment of the project which has now been completed. A further stage-to design a Europe-wide action plan will follow in 2004. The book, organised under the auspices of the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) analyses national approaches already tested, and provides in-depth surveys on the pioneer cities such as Hamburg, Malmo and Zurich. Serious attention is given to city-specific hurdles which have been faced and overcome. The most relevant product groups for eco-procurement such as construction, transport, energy, information technology, furniture and food. are also analysed. Uniquely, the book also provides calculations on the environmental benefits potentially achievable through greener purchasing. Tools were developed and tested by the RELIEF researchers on the environmental assessment of products, public buying power and on evaluations of market conditions in order to provide scenarios for the application of green purchasing at a European level. The conclusions are that there is huge potential for both local and central governments to adapt their behaviour patterns and purchase in a more environmentally responsible way. For example, 18% of the EU's Kyoto Protocol commitment could be achieved if major cities in the European Union purchased green electricity. The results are complemented by new ideas on how best to foster innovation in public contractual arrangements-to encourage the development of products such as super-energy-efficient computers and fuel cells-and how the legal system may require adaptation and reform. The results presented in this book will provide an indispensable resource for municipalities, governments, researchers and business practitioners looking for answers on how public procurement can have a fundamental and manifestly positive effect on the environment.

Introduction to e-Supply Chain Management - Engaging Technology to Build Market-Winning Business Partnerships (Hardcover):... Introduction to e-Supply Chain Management - Engaging Technology to Build Market-Winning Business Partnerships (Hardcover)
David Frederick Ross
R4,501 Discovery Miles 45 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the quest to remove supply channel costs, streamline channel communications, and link customers to the value-added resources found along the supply chain continuum, Supply Chain Management (SCM) has emerged as a tactical operations tool. The first book to completely define the architecture of the merger of SCM and the Internet, Introduction to e-Supply Chain Management: Engaging Technology to Build Market-Winning Business Partnerships shows you how to exploit this merger and gain an unbeatable competitive advantage.

The tightening of the economy and heavier restrictions and security measures placed on channel flows have rendered access to real-time, accurate supply chain information more critical than ever. Connectivity, messaging, and collaboration have become today's foremost buzzwords, as companies compete for survival in an environment where cycle times and permissable margins of error continue to shrink. Introduction to e-Supply Chain Management explores the concepts, techniques, and vocabulary of the convergence of SCM and the Internet so that companies can move beyond merely surviving and thrive in today's competitive marketplace.

James B Ayers
R4,554 Discovery Miles 45 540 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Any supply chain improvement project, even if well conceived, has a good chance of failing, unless the accompanying information technology enables the design. Being prepared, understanding the risks and how to reduce them, will give you the edge you need. Combining a technology focus with practical advice, Making Supply Chain Management Work: Design, Implementation, Partnerships, Technology, and Profits gives you the tools to not only design new supply chains, but to design them effectively.

The book begins with an introduction to SCM. It identifies and describes the five management tasks that are changing as organizations increasingly compete as parts of supply chains rather than standalone entities. Doing well in all five is a prerequisite for success. These tasks are:

· Designing supply chain for strategic management
· Implementing collaborative relationships within the organization
· Forging supply chain partnerships with other organizations
· Managing supply chain information
· Making money from the supply chain

The book provides insights into the special requirements for improving supply chains, and consequently improving competitiveness. The chapters show you how to streamline the supply chain change implementation process, including systems changes, reducing the risk of wasting your time and money on an effort that is going nowhere in an area vital to the survival of your business. Making Supply Chain Management Work: Design, Implementation, Partnerships, Technology, and Profits highlights what can go wrong and more importantly, gives you the tools to make it go right.

Basics of Supply Chain Management (Hardcover): Lawrence D Fredendall, E. D Hill Basics of Supply Chain Management (Hardcover)
Lawrence D Fredendall, E. D Hill
R2,975 Discovery Miles 29 750 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Supply Chain Management (SCM) was once a "pie in the sky" concept that could not be fully achieved. A key barrier was the cost of communicating with and coordinating among the many independent suppliers in each supply chain. SCM is possible because of three changes: technology has developed that simplifies communication, new management paradigms have developed that are shared among supply chain members and simplify their coordination efforts, and the development of a highly trained workforce.

Managers recognize that costs can be reduced while customer satisfaction is increased when production and inventory decisions are based on analysis of the total system of delivering products and/or services. Gradually, firms have begun to see themselves as a system of closely linked processes which deliver products and/or services to customers and to recognize that the entire firm is one link in a chain of firms that serve the customer. By increasing the integration in the entire supply chain, all the firms in the chain can increase their profits.

Competition in the workplace has pushed firms to make SCM a reality. Those who master it gain a competitive edge. Therefore, SCM means money and jobs. The Basics of Supply Chain Management will give you the tools you need to master this crucial subject.
