Art and the Challenge of Markets Volume 2 - From Commodification of Art to Artistic Critiques of Capitalism (Paperback,... Art and the Challenge of Markets Volume 2 - From Commodification of Art to Artistic Critiques of Capitalism (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Victoria D. Alexander, Samuli Hagg, Simo Hayrynen, Erkki Sevanen
R2,059 Discovery Miles 20 590 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Art and the Challenge of Markets Volumes 1 & 2 examine the politics of art and culture in light of the profound changes that have taken place in the world order since the 1980s and 1990s. The contributors explore how in these two decades, the neoliberal or market-based model of capitalism started to spread from the economic realm to other areas of society. As a result, many aspects of contemporary Western societies increasingly function in the same way as the private enterprise sector under traditional market capitalism. This second volume analyses the relationships of art with contemporary capitalist economies and instrumentalist cultural policies, and examines several varieties of capitalist-critical and alternative art forms that exist in today's art worlds. It also addresses the vexed issues of art controversies and censorship. The chapters cover issues such as the culturalization of the economy, aesthetics and anti-aesthetics, the societal benefits of works of art, art's responsibility to society, "artivism", activist arts as protest and capitalism-critical works, and controversies over nudity in art, as well as considering the marketisation of emerging visual arts worlds in East Asia. The book ends with the a concluding chapter suggesting that even in today's marketized and commercialized environments, art will find a way. Both volumes provide students and scholars across a range of disciplines with an incisive, comparative overview of the politics of art and culture and national, international and transnational art worlds in contemporary capitalism.

R2,838 Discovery Miles 28 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Specter of Hypocrisy - Testing the Limits of Moral Discourse (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Raphael Sassower The Specter of Hypocrisy - Testing the Limits of Moral Discourse (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Raphael Sassower
R1,388 Discovery Miles 13 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Raphael Sassower examines the concept of hypocrisy for its strategic potential as a means of personal protection and social cohesion. Given the contemporary context of post-truth, the examination of degrees or kinds of hypocrisy moves from the Greek etymology of masks worn on the theater stage to the Hebrew etymology of the color adjustment of chameleons to their environment. Canonical presuppositions about the uniformity of the mind and the relation between intention and behavior that warrant the charge of hypocrisy are critically reconsidered in order to appreciate both inherent inconsistencies in personal conduct and the different contexts where the hypocrisy appears. Sassower considers the limits of analytic moral and political discourses that at times overlook the conditions under which putative hypocritical behavior is existentially required and where compromises yield positive results. When used among friends, the charge of hypocrisy is a useful tool with which to build trust and communities.

Hunger, Whiteness and Religion in Neoliberal Britain - An Inequality of Power (Hardcover): Maddy Power Hunger, Whiteness and Religion in Neoliberal Britain - An Inequality of Power (Hardcover)
Maddy Power
R3,223 Discovery Miles 32 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Exploring why food aid exists and the deeper causes of food poverty, this book addresses neglected dimensions of traditional food aid and food poverty debates. It argues that the food aid industry is infused with neoliberal governmentality and shows how food charity upholds Christian ideals and white privilege, maintaining inequalities of class, race, religion and gender. However, it also reveals a sector that is immensely varied, embodying both individualism and mutual aid. Drawing upon lived experiences, it documents how food sharing amid poverty fosters solidarity and gives rise to alternative modes of food redistribution among communities. By harnessing these alternative ways of being, food aid and communities can be part of movements for economic and racial justice.

Hooligans, Ultras, Activists - Polish Football Fandom in Sociological Perspective (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Radoslaw... Hooligans, Ultras, Activists - Polish Football Fandom in Sociological Perspective (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Radoslaw Kossakowski
R2,636 Discovery Miles 26 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is the first comprehensive attempt to identify the deeper causes that have shaped contemporary behaviour patterns and motivations among football fans in Poland. Fan culture in Poland has long been based on a distinctively grassroots, spontaneous movements that ruled out any cooperation with local authorities and sports organizations. The activity of supporter groups has regularly failed to meet the principles set by official bodies, intentionally breaching the moral and legal standards of the day. Based on data derived from ethnographic fieldwork, content analysis of fan journals, magazines, social media and online forums, as well as a wide range of qualitative interviews conducted over the years, the book analyses the ways in which fandom culture in Poland has evolved: from its moderate beginnings in the shadows of a communist regime in the 1970's, through the anomic, 'uncivilized' and pathological decade of the 1990's, to the peculiar culture based on strong cohesion, capabilities of social mobilization and emerging 'resistance identity' in the 21st century. It thus provides a detailed analysis of Polish fandom's multi-dimensional structure, and will be of interest to students and academics interested in the growing field of football research, as well as those researching the transformation of Central and Eastern Europe, or more generally in European Studies.

Culture's Engine - Inside Science and Technology (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): William Gosling Culture's Engine - Inside Science and Technology (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
William Gosling
R2,410 Discovery Miles 24 100 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Culture's Engine offers an insightful and penetrating analysis of the enduring relationship between technology and society. William Gosling explores in absorbing historical detail how humans have experienced change through a sequence of technological revolutions, each giving rise to new social organisation, which in turn influences the shape and timing of the next such revolution. Gosling argues that it is through this dialogue that successful technology sets the direction and pace of all cultural evolution. The state of technology at any time is the major influence on the world, and not just the material world. This book then is not a history of technology, still less of science. It fundamentally questions how technology and social forces interact, leading to these successive revolutions and their outcomes.

Religion in Process - An Approach Inspired by Human Dignity, Rights, and Reasonableness (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Johannes A.... Religion in Process - An Approach Inspired by Human Dignity, Rights, and Reasonableness (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Johannes A. van der Ven
R2,627 Discovery Miles 26 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book argues that contemporary Christianity is in crisis because freedom of religion is concealed and under pressure by secularization and migration. A drastic change is necessary - in the Catholic Church at first - from a God-given hierarchical structure to a democratic religion that rests on human dignity and human rights. The text conveys that such a change -that should happen from within- will put an end to challenges such as in Catholicism where outside human rights are promoted, but from inside a different story is told. Cultural change in religion is also covered with the move from centuries-old dictates to the reasonable justification of freedom of experiences, symbols, rituals and inter-religious intercourse as well as the cross communication between believers and non-believers alike. This approach makes religion an as yet unfinished religion. The text appeals to researchers and academics working in human rights and religion.

The Palgrave Handbook of Humour, History, and Methodology (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Daniel Derrin, Hannah Burrows The Palgrave Handbook of Humour, History, and Methodology (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Daniel Derrin, Hannah Burrows
R4,307 Discovery Miles 43 070 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This handbook addresses the methodological problems and theoretical challenges that arise in attempting to understand and represent humour in specific historical contexts across cultural history. It explores problems involved in applying modern theories of humour to historically-distant contexts of humour and points to the importance of recognising the divergent assumptions made by different academic disciplines when approaching the topic. It explores problems of terminology, identification, classification, subjectivity of viewpoint, and the coherence of the object of study. It addresses specific theories, together with the needs of specific historical case-studies, as well as some of the challenges of presenting historical humour to contemporary audiences through translation and curation. In this way, the handbook aims to encourage a fresh exploration of methodological problems involved in studying the various significances both of the history of humour and of humour in history.

Craft Learning as Perceptual Transformation - Getting 'the Feel' in the Wooden Boat Workshop (Paperback, 1st ed.... Craft Learning as Perceptual Transformation - Getting 'the Feel' in the Wooden Boat Workshop (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Tom Martin
R2,862 Discovery Miles 28 620 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Through an examination of three wooden boat workshops on the East coast of the United States, this volume explores how craftspeople interpret their tools and materials during work, and how such perception fits into a holistic conception of practical skill. The author bases his findings on first-person fieldwork as a boat builder's apprentice, during which he recorded his changing sensory experience as he learned the basics of the trade. The book reveals how experience in the workshop allows craftspeople to draw new meaning from their senses, constituting meaningful objects through perception that are invisible to the casual observer. Ultimately, the author argues that this kind of perceptual understanding demonstrates a fundamental mode of human cognition, an intelligence frequently overlooked within contemporary education.

Consumer Nationalism and Barr's Irn-Bru in Scotland (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): David Leishman Consumer Nationalism and Barr's Irn-Bru in Scotland (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
David Leishman
R1,392 Discovery Miles 13 920 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book connects a detailed analysis of Irn-Bru's brand identity over time to theories of national identity, consumer studies, and banal nationalism. It situates the commercial history of Barr's Irn-Bru in a transnational context and shows how Irn-Bru has become a symbol of Scotland through processes of rewriting, reframing and institutionalized forgetting, linking the consumption of what began as a trans-national generic product to a specific national community. As such, Leishman presents a longitudinal, cross-disciplinary approach to analysing branding and advertising as multi-modal forms of discourse, in order to underline the role of commercial, non-state actors and popular consumerism in the phenomenon of banal nationalism. It will be of interest to students and scholars researching nationalism, consumption, and Scottish studies.

Radicalizing Literacies and Languaging - A Framework toward Dismantling the Mono-Mainstream Assumption (Paperback, 1st ed.... Radicalizing Literacies and Languaging - A Framework toward Dismantling the Mono-Mainstream Assumption (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Alexandra Babino, Mary Amanda Stewart
R2,867 Discovery Miles 28 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book names and confounds the mono-mainstream assumption that invisibly frames much research, the ideologies that normalize monolingualism, monoculturalism, monoliteracy, mononationalism, and/or monomodal ways of knowing. In its place, the authors propose multi- and trans- lenses of these phenomena steeped in a raciolinguistic perspective on Bourdieu's reflexive sociology to move toward a more accurate, multidimensional view of racialized peoples' literacy and language practices. To achieve this, they first engage in a comprehensive review of literacies, languaging, and a critical sociocultural framework. Then, the distinct testimonios of four women underscore this framework in practice, followed by action steps for research, policy, and pedagogy. This book will be of particular interest to literacy and language education researchers.

Lower League Football in Crisis - Issues of Organisation and Legitimacy in England and Germany (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020):... Lower League Football in Crisis - Issues of Organisation and Legitimacy in England and Germany (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Daniel Ziesche
R2,648 Discovery Miles 26 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

While the field of football studies has produced an abundance of literature on professional, top-league football, there is little research output to do with the non-top level football. This book explores the relationship between the top and lower leagues, laying open the drastic schisms that exist between the different levels. The study links the developments at the top level of English and German football in the past 30 years to transformational processes in lower league football. Illustrating how the hegemonic status of top football weighs hard on the spheres below, it depicts how it also serves as a blueprint for lower league football clubs' strategies in coping with a threefold dilemma of institutional legitimacy that shows itself in economic, cultural and social dimensions. Taking the different club structures in both national contexts as a starting point, it portrays both the efficacy of institutional frameworks and how these can be challenged from below. This research will be of interest to students and scholars across football studies, sports studies, the sociology of sport, and organisation studies.

Grazyna Gajewska
R1,378 Discovery Miles 13 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Focusing on non-human actors, Grazyna Gajewska expands the discussion of eroticism in contemporary culture by bringing in material culture, object studies, and "the anthropology of things." She sets out from the assumption that things (such as, for instance, attire, underwear, shoes, or jewelry) play an important role in arousing erotic imagination-they are genuine participants in the process, not mere signifiers of eroticism. Their use does not denote only undeniable facts of everyday life associated with functionality, the pragmatic or aesthetic aspect, but also contribute to the shaping of human emotions, fantasies and phantasms. In her study, Gajewska brings eroticism in contemporary culture to light through applying gender studies to new contexts-animals, robots, virtual worlds-even as she explores a new methodology, the anthropology of things.

Stardom in Contemporary Hindi Cinema - Celebrity and Fame in Globalized Times (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Aysha Iqbal... Stardom in Contemporary Hindi Cinema - Celebrity and Fame in Globalized Times (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Aysha Iqbal Viswamohan, Clare M. Wilkinson
R3,796 Discovery Miles 37 960 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this book, film scholars, anthropologists, and critics discuss star-making in the contemporary Hindi-language film industry in India, also known as "Bollywood." Drawing on theories of stardom, globalization, transnationalism, gender, and new media studies, the chapters explore contemporary Hindi film celebrity. With the rise of social media and India's increased engagement in the global economy, Hindi film stars are forging their identities not just through their on-screen images and magazine and advertising appearances, but also through an array of media platforms, product endorsements, setting fashion trends, and involvement in social causes. Focusing on some of the best-known Indian stars since the late 1990s, the book discusses the multiplying avenues for forging a star identity, the strategies industry outsiders adopt to become stars, and the contradictions and conflicts that such star-making produces. It addresses questions such as: What traits of contemporary stars have contributed most to longevity and success in the industry? How has filmmaking technology and practice altered the nature of stardom? How has the manufacture of celebrity altered with the recent appearance of commodity culture in India and the rise of a hyper-connected global economy? By doing so, it describes a distinct moment in India and in the world in which stars and stardom are drawn more closely than ever into the vital events of global culture. Hindi films and their stars are part of the national and global entertainment circuits that are bigger and more competitive than ever. As such, this is a timely book creates opportunities for examining stardom in other industries and provides fruitful cross-cultural perspectives on star identities today. "Grounded in rigorous scholarship as well as a palpable love of Hindi cinema, this collection of 19 essays on a dizzying array of contemporary Hindi film stars makes for an informative, thought-provoking, illuminating, and most of all, a joyful read. Pushing boundaries of not only global Star Studies but also film theory as a whole, this de-colonised and de-colonising volume is a must read for film scholars, students and cinephiles!" Dr. Sunny Singh, Senior Lecturer - Creative Writing and English Literature, Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture & Design, London Metropolitan University "A wide-ranging overview of Hindi cinema's filmi firmament today, focussing on its most intriguing and brightest-burning stars. The variety of approaches to stardom and celebrity by both established and upcoming scholars reveals a web of interconnecting stories and concerns that provide fascinating new insights into the workings of today's Hindi film industry, while shining fresh light on contemporary India and the world we live in." David Kellogg, Nikolai Veresov; L.S. Vygotsky
R4,662 Discovery Miles 46 620 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides both a lost last word and a firm first foundation: seven lectures, given in the last months in the life of the Soviet thinker, teacher, and writer L.S. Vygotsky, offer us the most comprehensive and developed form of his thoughts on the child, expressed in the most fundamental and even popular form that Vygotsky himself used with his beginner-level students. As the title of Vygotsky's course indicates, these are foundations upon which cultural-historical researchers can rebuild the lost science of "pedology", a holistic approach to child development based on the dynamic unity of physical and mental development. Volume One includes translations of seven of Vygotsky's lectures that reflect his approach to pedology; the method of pedology and the "methodics" of the unit of analysis; the role of heredity and social environment in child development; and general laws of development in childhood that will help parents and teachers understand the way the child's endocrine system, nervous system, and mind change as the child enters a culture and learns to make history.

Troubling Sociological Concepts - An Interrogation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Martyn Hammersley Troubling Sociological Concepts - An Interrogation (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Martyn Hammersley
R2,631 Discovery Miles 26 310 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Sociology addresses challenging social issues and seeks new ways to understand them. However, much sociological terminology suffers from multiple, vague, or uncertain meanings. This is true of many of the central terms that sociologists use, such as 'power', 'ideology', 'culture', 'social class', and even 'society'. The result is that the conclusions reached by sociological investigations are frequently subject to discrepant interpretations, and their validity is difficult to assess. The chapters in this book address several of the key terms employed by sociologists, examining the concepts associated with them in depth - from both an historical and an analytical perspective. The aim is not to develop an entirely new framework but rather to document the various meanings associated with these terms, and to suggest ways in which they could be refined or developed for the purposes of sociological analysis. Since the concepts addressed are of wide relevance, Troubling Sociological Concepts will be of interest and use to researchers and students across the social sciences.

Law, Insecurity and Risk Control - Neo-Liberal Governance and the Populist Revolt (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): John Pratt Law, Insecurity and Risk Control - Neo-Liberal Governance and the Populist Revolt (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
John Pratt
R2,894 Discovery Miles 28 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines our contemporary preoccupation with risk and how criminal law and punishment have been transformed as a result of these anxieties. It adopts an historical approach to examine the development of risk control measures used across the US, UK, New Zealand, Australia and Canada - particularly since the 1980's - with the rise of the "security sanction". It also takes a criminological and sociological approach to analysing shifts in criminal law and punishment and its implications for contemporary society and criminal justice systems. Law, Insecurity and Risk Control analyses the range and scope of the 'security sanction' and its immobilizing measures, ranging from control over minor incivilities to the most serious crimes. Despite these innovations, though, it argues that our anxieties about risk have become so extensive that the "security sanction" is no longer sufficient to provide social stability and cohesion. As a consequence, people have been attracted to the 'magic' of populism in a revolt against mainstream politics and organisations of government, as with the EU referendum in the UK and the US presidential election of Donald Trump in 2016. While there have been political manoeuvrings to rein back risk and place new controls on it, these have only brought further disillusionment, insecurity and anxiety. This book argues that the "security sanction" is likely to become more deeply embedded in the criminal justice systems of these societies, as new risks to both the well-being of individuals and the nation state are identified.

Gentrification around the World, Volume II - Innovative Approaches (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Jerome Krase, Judith N. Desena Gentrification around the World, Volume II - Innovative Approaches (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Jerome Krase, Judith N. Desena
R2,652 Discovery Miles 26 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Bringing together scholarly but readable essays on the process of gentrification, this two-volume collection addresses the broad question: In what ways does gentrification affect cities, neighborhoods, and the everyday experiences of ordinary people? In this second volume of Gentrification around the World, contributors contemplate different ways of thinking about gentrification and displacement in the abstract and "on-the-ground." Chapters examine, among other topics, social class, development, im/migration, housing, race relations, political economy, power dynamics, inequality, displacement, social segregation, homogenization, urban policy, planning, and design. The qualitative methodologies used in each chapter-which emphasize ethnographic, participatory, and visual approaches that interrogate the representation of gentrification in the arts, film, and other mass media-are themselves a unique and pioneering way of studying gentrification and its consequences worldwide.

Martijn de Koning, Carmen Becker, Ineke Roex
R2,886 Discovery Miles 28 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Based on ethnographic research in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Germany, this book presents a novel approach to studying Muslim militant activism. While much existing research focuses on the process of radicalization, these authors introduce a different set of questions that investigate specific modes of activism, and their engagement with dominant discourses and practices in media and state policies. Drawing on social movement theory and Foucault's work on counter-conduct, this research explores how da'wa networks came about, and how activists developed themselves in interaction with state and media practices. This perspective highlights a form of activism and resistance in which activists turn against policies and debates centring on Muslims and Islam, while attempting to create and protect an alternative space for themselves in which they can experience Islam according to their own perception of it. The study will contribute to debates about resistance, social movements and militant activism among Muslims in Europe.

Thorsten Fitzon, Sandra Linden, Kathrin Liess, Dorothee Elm Von Der Osten
R3,673 Discovery Miles 36 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How people relate to time is one of the oldest questions of mankind. This book centers on life phases to show how the life cycle is structured, and it discusses how various theological and literary models denote and divide up the different phases of life. These life-phase models reflect congruent or contrasting overall concepts of time. Using examples from texts from the Ancient Near Eastern era up to the 20th century, the contributions in the book discuss how the different life phases were construed and what potential the respective life phases offer for a time-critical reflection."

R4,003 Discovery Miles 40 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Doing Fandom presents a body of knowledge essential to football fandom research, and the study of gender, space, emotions and culture more generally. The analytical framework follows the theory of practice, drawing on three acclaimed sociological concepts to expand current scholarship on fandom: habitus, doing gender, and claiming the right to space. The authors apply these perspectives to interrogate the development, performative and experiential aspects of fandom, and inform analysis of fans' social and political activism beyond the stadium. Drawing on several case studies conducted among fans in the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe, the anthology provides substantial insight into the construction of fandom, and will be invaluable for students and scholars across sociology, anthropology of sport, and cultural studies.

Rethinking Military Professionalism for the Changing Armed Forces (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Krystal K. Hachey, Tamir Libel,... Rethinking Military Professionalism for the Changing Armed Forces (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Krystal K. Hachey, Tamir Libel, Waylon H. Dean
R3,332 Discovery Miles 33 320 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book will make a first contribution to identify the gaps in current practices and provide alternative mechanisms to conceptualize professionalism that is reflective of changing requirements, culture, and demographics of the contemporary military force. The military profession promotes the development, sustainment, and embodiment of ethos, which guides conduct across operational contexts, from times of national and international crises and security challenges (e.g., war, natural disasters, and peace support operations). It is imperative for military leaders to understand how ethos and doctrine shape professional frameworks, which guide the conduct of military members.

Jews at Work - Their Economic Progress in the American Labor Market (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Barry R Chiswick Jews at Work - Their Economic Progress in the American Labor Market (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Barry R Chiswick
R4,028 Discovery Miles 40 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book addresses the educational, occupational, and income progress of Jews in the American labor market. Using theoretical and statistical findings, it compares the experience of American Jews with that of other Americans, from the middle of the 19th century through the 20th and into the early 21st century. Jews in the United States have been remarkably successful; from peddlers and low-skilled factory workers, clearly near the bottom of the economic ladder, they have, as a community, risen to the top of the economic ladder. The papers included in this volume, all authored or co-authored by Barry Chiswick, address such issues as the English language proficiency, occupational attainment and earnings of Jews, educational and labor market discrimination against Jews, life cycle and labor force participation patterns of Jewish women, and historical and methodological issues, among many others. The final chapter analyzes alternative explanations for the consistently high level of educational and economic achievement of American Jewry over the past century and a half. The chapters in this book also develop and demonstrate the usefulness of alternative techniques for identifying Jews in US Census and survey data where neither religion nor Jewish ethnicity is explicitly identified. This methodology is also applicable to the study of other minority groups in the US and in other countries.
