In the wake of President Bush's faith-based initiative, many are still wondering about the effectiveness of these faith-based organizations in providing services to those in need, and whether they provide better outcomes than more traditional government, secular nonprofit, and for-profit organizations. In "Faith, Hope, and Jobs", Stephen V. Monsma and J. Christopher Soper study the effectiveness of 17 different welfare-to-work programs in Los Angeles County - a county in which the U.S. government spends 14 per cent of its entire welfare budget - and offer groundbreaking insight into understanding what works and what doesn't. Monsma and Soper examine client assessment of the programs, their progress in developing attitudes and resources important for finding self-supporting employment, and their experience in finding actual employment. This study reveals that the clients of the more explicitly faith-based programs did best in gaining in social capital and were highly positive in evaluating the religious components of their programs. For-profit programs tended to do the best in terms of their clients finding employment. Overall, the religiously active respondents tended to experience better outcomes than those who were not religiously active but surprisingly, the religiously active and non-active tended to do equally well in faith-based programs. "Faith, Hope, and Jobs" concludes with three sets of concrete recommendations for public policymakers, social service program managers, and researchers.

The Spirit of the Heart is a collection of poems with most written during late 2012 through mid-2013. Each of them resulted from personal thoughts and experiences and from studying God's Word. Before writing down these words I processed them through my heart to be blessed by the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit dwelling in the human heart, the heart opens up to the Truth of being. It takes practice, patience and faith to hear and understand as the Holy Spirit responds, conveys and directs the Truth through the magic of the heart. My hope is that each reader will use these poems as a guide and a catalyst to gain insight into the power and love of the Holy Spirit, who was sent as a Comforter by the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

We as a people of a proud and historic nation have watched as our economy was fractured badly during the 2001 period through 2009. The lust for big power and wealth has caused some leaders of government, business, and religion to have more ambition to achieve their own personal success than to care about those persons they are responsible in leading and protecting. These poems deal mostly with Biblical issues. Some address our human condition based on the Scriptures. Others deal with unseen influences that many of us are unaware of, but which impact our lives for better or worse. They were written as a result of 21 years of studying the Bible. Originally my journey into the Scriptures began as I sought solutions to my own problems. However over the years it has became a quest for answers to life's deeper issues. When I began reading the Bible I did not believe I would find solutions to my problems. I started reading it out of desperation after I had exhausted books on philosophy and the occult and just about anything else I got my hands on. I read many books promising "the secret" but they disappointed me. It is really astonishing that a book which just about everyone has sitting around really has the answer to every human need. I wrote these poems because I came to the realization that many people like me years ago, do not believe in the spiritual. And yet I believe it is evident that if we disregard Biblical teachings about the spiritual realms, life simply does not make a lot of sense. However it is also my experience that many people who claim to be spiritual do not understand what the Bible teaches about the spiritual realm that operates in the earth. These poems were also written for people who have difficulty reading and understanding the Scriptures. I try to clarify misunderstanding about many important Biblical issues such as Hell and pre-destination. Free from prison he vows to do it the legal way but definitely not God's way. How long will the Blackwell's stop seeking a legacy and embrace the one Ruth left behind? This book portrays the life of the great King David from a first person viewpoint. Thus it enables the reader to see the life and times of King David as though he were on the scene. It paints a verbal portrait of King David in a "warts and all" way, that is, it tells of his strengths and weaknesses. Some of the high points in his life, such as slaying the giant Goliath, his sin of adultery with the beautiful Bathsheba, fleeing from the army of his rebellious son Absalom, are vividly portrayed from his own viewpoint. This book is designed to enable the reader to understand how King David became known as a "man after God's own heart."

Life is a series of lessons. For the Christian the goal of each is to guide and encourage the student to become a little more like Jesus. For some those lessons are taught in the office or classroom; for others, they arise in the home; for others still those lessons may be taught on the road while traveling from place to place.

For me, many of those lessons have come on the hard and often unforgiving streets of Norfolk, Virginia. Some will bring a smile to your face, while others may bring tears.
