Faith, Hope, and Jobs - Welfare-to-Work in Los Angeles (Paperback): Stephen V. Monsma Faith, Hope, and Jobs - Welfare-to-Work in Los Angeles (Paperback)
Stephen V. Monsma
R1,364 Discovery Miles 13 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This title offers a front-burner issue on the public policy agenda today is the increased use of partnerships between government and nongovernmental entities, including faith-based social service organizations. In the wake of President Bush's faith-based initiative, many are still wondering about the effectiveness of these faith-based organizations in providing services to those in need, and whether they provide better outcomes than more traditional government, secular nonprofit, and for-profit organizations. In "Faith, Hope, and Jobs", Stephen V. Monsma and J. Christopher Soper study the effectiveness of 17 different welfare-to-work programs in Los Angeles County - a county in which the U.S. government spends 14 per cent of its entire welfare budget - and offer groundbreaking insight into understanding what works and what doesn't. Monsma and Soper examine client assessment of the programs, their progress in developing attitudes and resources important for finding self-supporting employment, and their experience in finding actual employment. This study reveals that the clients of the more explicitly faith-based programs did best in gaining in social capital and were highly positive in evaluating the religious components of their programs. For-profit programs tended to do the best in terms of their clients finding employment. Overall, the religiously active respondents tended to experience better outcomes than those who were not religiously active but surprisingly, the religiously active and non-active tended to do equally well in faith-based programs. "Faith, Hope, and Jobs" concludes with three sets of concrete recommendations for public policymakers, social service program managers, and researchers.

The Spirit of the Heart (Hardcover): James P. Robson The Spirit of the Heart (Hardcover)
James P. Robson
R661 Discovery Miles 6 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Spirit of the Heart is a collection of poems with most written during late 2012 through mid-2013. Each of them resulted from personal thoughts and experiences and from studying God's Word. Before writing down these words I processed them through my heart to be blessed by the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit dwelling in the human heart, the heart opens up to the Truth of being. It takes practice, patience and faith to hear and understand as the Holy Spirit responds, conveys and directs the Truth through the magic of the heart. My hope is that each reader will use these poems as a guide and a catalyst to gain insight into the power and love of the Holy Spirit, who was sent as a Comforter by the love and grace of Jesus Christ.

Have We Lost Our Common Sense? (Hardcover): Bob Terrell Have We Lost Our Common Sense? (Hardcover)
Bob Terrell
R866 Discovery Miles 8 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We as a people of a proud and historic nation have watched as our economy was fractured badly during the 2001 period through 2009. The lust for big power and wealth has caused some leaders of government, business, and religion to have more ambition to achieve their own personal success than to care about those persons they are responsible in leading and protecting. Our political system has lost the ability or desire to have bi-partisan teamwork to make the quality of life better for our children and grandchildren. My goal is to get us to seek and find solutions to problems and not just whine and gripe among ourselves for self gain. I am a small town boy from Kentucky who was fortunate to get to go to college on a basketball scholarship. My college education may not have been possible without athletics. Three years as a young Marine Corps Officer gave me an opportunity to see life from another vantage point. Forty years as an Executive in the Auto Industry and an opportunity to live in eleven different states and one territory and raise a family of five gave me another good perspective on life. This book has been born from the memories and actual experiences I have enjoyed from relationships and friendships with many interesting personalities from Baseball Great Roberto Clemente to former Governor George Nigh of Oklahoma to many top executives in industry. I have seen the "Good, the Bad" and even the Ugly" of life. Fortunately I have seen so many good and kind people that the bad and the ugly have been overcome.

Brother Jesus - The Nazarene through Jewish Eyes (Hardcover): Schalom Ben-Chorin Brother Jesus - The Nazarene through Jewish Eyes (Hardcover)
Schalom Ben-Chorin; Translated by Jared S. Klein, Max Reinhart
R3,012 Discovery Miles 30 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

No matter what we would make of Jesus, says Schalom Ben-Chorin, he was first a Jewish man in a Jewish land. Brother Jesus leads us through the twists and turns of history to reveal the figure who extends a "brotherly hand" to the author as a fellow Jew. Ben-Chorin's reach is astounding as he moves easily between literature, law, etymology, psychology, and theology to recover "Jesus' picture from the Christian overpainting." A commanding scholar of the historical Jesus who also devoted his life to widening Jewish-Christian dialogue, Ben-Chorin ranges across such events as the wedding at Cana, the Last Supper, and the crucifixion to reveal, in contemporary Christianity, traces of the Jewish codes and customs in which Jesus was immersed. Not only do we see how and why these events also resonate with Jews, but we are brought closer to Christianity in its primitive state: radical, directionless, even pagan. Early in his book, Ben-Chorin writes, "the belief of Jesus unifies us, but the belief in Jesus divides us." It is the kind of paradox from which arise endless questions or, as Ben-Chorin would have it, endless opportunities for Jews and Christians to come together for meaningful, mutual discovery.

Biblical Truths in Poetry (Hardcover): Hope E. Burns Biblical Truths in Poetry (Hardcover)
Hope E. Burns
R800 Discovery Miles 8 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

These poems deal mostly with Biblical issues. Some address our human condition based on the Scriptures. Others deal with unseen influences that many of us are unaware of, but which impact our lives for better or worse. They were written as a result of 21 years of studying the Bible. Originally my journey into the Scriptures began as I sought solutions to my own problems. However over the years it has became a quest for answers to life's deeper issues. When I began reading the Bible I did not believe I would find solutions to my problems. I started reading it out of desperation after I had exhausted books on philosophy and the occult and just about anything else I got my hands on. I read many books promising "the secret" but they disappointed me. It is really astonishing that a book which just about everyone has sitting around really has the answer to every human need. I wrote these poems because I came to the realization that many people like me years ago, do not believe in the spiritual. And yet I believe it is evident that if we disregard Biblical teachings about the spiritual realms, life simply does not make a lot of sense. However it is also my experience that many people who claim to be spiritual do not understand what the Bible teaches about the spiritual realm that operates in the earth. These poems were also written for people who have difficulty reading and understanding the Scriptures. I try to clarify misunderstanding about many important Biblical issues such as Hell and pre-destination. They are written in simple poetic language for the benefit of anyone who is interested in Biblical Truth

"Put your hands together, everybody say Sunday Morning " No The Blackwell's want nothing more to do with Sunday Mornings or God which is not the way Ruth Blackwell raised her children. Ruth trained up her children in the church but when she died suddenly from cancer it seemed everything she taught them died with her. She left behind three precious bibles and a prayer that they will one day find their way back to God. It is true every man when he is driven away it is of his own lust and entice. Each Blackwell is driven by something. Jade, the youngest, is driven by love and surely she should be able to find it at church? When she finds herself alone and pregnant after the death of her mother, it is the church that cast her out like the woman wearing the scarlet letter. Determined to never return again she seeks for the love that's been missing in the arms of a man only to find rejection and another child. Her only source of freedom now is the club life. No longer cleaving to what she was taught but now must make her own choices her own way. Alexandria, the middle child, is driven by bitterness of the past and resolves to better her own life. Seeking for fame as a fashion designer, she is determined to make her mark in the world. She doesn't need any distractions to stand in her way. Not her needy sister, looser brother, not fine Trent Tyler, and definitely not God. Jasper, the oldest, is driven by riches but his search keeps landing him in jail. All he could remember while sitting behind prison walls was what his mother used to say "You can't hide from God." He's wasn't hiding he just wanted to do what he wanted to do? Free from prison he vows to do it the legal way but definitely not God's way. How long will the Blackwell's stop seeking a legacy and embrace the one Ruth left behind? How long will they continue to cry, No More Sunday Mornings?

"King David - 'My Life as I Remember It'" (Hardcover): R. Furman Kenney "King David - 'My Life as I Remember It'" (Hardcover)
R. Furman Kenney
R703 Discovery Miles 7 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book portrays the life of the great King David from a first person viewpoint. Thus it enables the reader to see the life and times of King David as though he were on the scene. It paints a verbal portrait of King David in a "warts and all" way, that is, it tells of his strengths and weaknesses. Some of the high points in his life, such as slaying the giant Goliath, his sin of adultery with the beautiful Bathsheba, fleeing from the army of his rebellious son Absalom, are vividly portrayed from his own viewpoint. This book is designed to enable the reader to understand how King David became known as a "man after God's own heart."

There Is Hope - And Other Lessons Learned by a Christian Cop (Hardcover): Chris Amos There Is Hope - And Other Lessons Learned by a Christian Cop (Hardcover)
Chris Amos
R620 Discovery Miles 6 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Life is a series of lessons. For the Christian the goal of each is to guide and encourage the student to become a little more like Jesus. For some those lessons are taught in the office or classroom; for others, they arise in the home; for others still those lessons may be taught on the road while traveling from place to place.

For me, many of those lessons have come on the hard and often unforgiving streets of Norfolk, Virginia. Some will bring a smile to your face, while others may bring tears. Some result in great victory, while others appear to end in tragedy and defeat. Some may provide answers, while others may raise questions, but all have a common purpose. Each one, when learned, will lead to a closer walk with Jesus Christ.

This book is a collection of those lessons written in hopes that you too may be encouraged in your quest to become more like our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. God is still, as in times past, using the most unsuspecting people to teach some of His most profound lessons. Join with me now as together we let the lessons begin.
