In the Civil War White House, John Hay became the ultimate insider, the man who had the president's ear. "Only an extremely small number of persons ever saw Abraham Lincoln both day and night in public as well as private settings from 1860 to 1864," notes Wayne C. Temple, chief deputy director, Illinois State Archives. "And only one of them had the literary flair of John Milton Hay."

The most privileged of reporters, Hay sent out dispatches and editorials that shed direct as well as indirect light on Lincoln. With ample access to the president, Hay was in a position to report his words and deeds as well as to offer opinions that may have reflected Lincoln's own views. Indeed, Burlingame suggests that Lincoln influenced Hay to write and place the articles in northern newspapers.

Burlingame takes great pains to establish authorship of the items reproduced here. He convincingly demonstrates that the essays and letters written for the "Providence Journal," the "Springfield Illinois State Journal," and the "St. Louis Missouri Democrat" under the pseudonym "Ecarte" are the work of Hay. Additionally he finds much circumstantial and stylistic evidence that Hay wrote as "our special correspondent" for the "Washington World" and for the "St. Louis Missouri Republican," Easily identifiable, Hay's style was "marked by long sentences, baroque syntactical architecture, immense vocabulary, verbal pyrotechnics, cocksure tone (combining acid contempt and extravagant praise), offbeat adverbs, and scornful adjectives."

John Hay believed that "real history is told in private letters," and the more than 220 surviving letters and telegrams from his Civil War days prove that to be true, showing Abraham Lincoln in action: "The Tycoon is in fine whack. I have rarely seen him more serene & busy. He is managing this war, the draft, foreign relations, and planning a reconstruction of the Union, all at once. I never knew with what tyrannous authority he rules the Cabinet, till now. The most important things he decides & there is no cavil."

Along with Hay's personal correspondence, Burlingame includes his surviving official letters. Though lacking the "literary brilliance of [Hay's] personal letters," Burlingame explains, "they help flesh out the historical record." Burlingame also includes some of the letters Hay composed for Lincoln's signature, including the celebrated letter of condolence to the Widow Bixby.

When an enraged reader gunned him down in Waco, April Fool's Day 1898, William Cowper Brann had published ""The Iconoclast"", the nation's most controversial magazine, for some forty months. Die Berichterstattung durch Medien ist Anknupfungspunkt zahlreicher Beitrage in Rechtsprechung und Literatur. Um die effektive Reichweite von Rechten zu ermitteln, wird zunachst ihr Inhalt definiert. Was Gegenstand der Recherchefreiheit ist, wird in dem ersten Teil der Arbeit dargelegt. Danach wird aufgezeigt, welchen allgemeinen Grenzen die Recherchefreiheit im Verfassungsrecht und Presserecht unterliegt. Sodann werden die Schranken fur die journalistische Recherche im Strafgesetzbuch untersucht. Schliesslich werden die Begrenzungen dargestellt, die das Strafverfahrensrecht fur die journalistische Recherche enthalt.

What takes place when we examine texts close-up? The art of close reading, once the closely guarded province of professional literary critics, now underpins the everyday processes of forensic scrutiny conducted by those brigades of citizen commentators who patrol the realms of social media. This study examines at close quarters a series of key English texts from the last hundred years: the novels of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, the plays of Samuel Beckett, the poetry of Sylvia Plath and Philip Larkin, the films of Alfred Hitchcock and the tweets of Donald Trump. It digs beneath their surface meanings to discover microcosmic ambiguities, allusions, ironies and contradictions which reveal tensions and conflicts at the heart of the paradox of patriarchal history. It suggests that acts of close reading may offer radical perspectives upon the bigger picture, as well as the means by which to deconstruct it. In doing so, it suggests an alternative to a classical vision of cultural progress characterised by irreconcilable conflicts between genders, genres and generations.

Die Studie untersucht mit einem diskursanalytischen Ansatz deutsche UEbersetzungen amerikanischer journalistischer Texte. Ziel ist es festzustellen, inwieweit die Translate dieser Nachrichten und Reportagen deutschen Mediennutzern sachgerechte Informationen uber die USA vermitteln. Die Analyse ergibt, dass bei der UEbersetzung oftmals journalistische Leitkriterien verletzt werden und es in vielen Fallen zu fehlerhaften bis hin zu eindeutig falschen Darstellungen kommt, die verzerrte bzw. entstellende Bilder uber die USA verbreiten und Stereotype falschlich bestatigen. Die Arbeit ruckt diese ubersetzerischen Mangel in den Blick und gibt wichtige Anstoesse zur translatorischen Qualitatssicherung im Bereich der Printmedien. Sie leistet damit einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Vermeidung irrefuhrender Berichterstattung und zur Verbesserung der Beziehungen zwischen beiden Nationen.

Kurt Tucholsky war einer der bekanntesten und wichtigsten politischen Publizisten und Satiriker der Weimarer Republik. Seine Beitrage entlarvten die Machenschaften der konservativen preussisch-deutschen Eliten in Politik, Justiz und Militar, die mit Hartnackigkeit daran arbeiteten, die ungeliebte Demokratie zu einer Farce werden zu lassen. Tucholsky konnte mit den Tausenden von Beitragen, die er wahrend der kurzen Jahre der Weimarer Zeit in den unterschiedlichsten Zeitungen veroeffentlichte, jedoch nicht den Rechtsruck und schliesslich das Abgleiten in die Diktatur verhindern. Desillusioniert von der Wirkungslosigkeit seines Engagements fur Demokratie, Menschenrechte und Gerechtigkeit verstummte der Autor und wahlte schliesslich, im Bewusstsein seines voelligen Versagens, den Suizid. In dieser Veroeffentlichung wird Tucholskys Weg in das Schweigen nachgezeichnet und den Grunden fur sein Verstummen nachgegangen, welche nicht allein in dem Gefuhl der Hoffnungslosigkeit zu suchen sind.

Die Printmedien besetzen auch im Zeitalter elektronischer Kommunikation eine fuhrende Rolle in der oeffentlichen Meinungsbildung. Eine freie Presse ist notwendig zur Aufdeckung gesellschaftlicher Missstande und gehoert zu den Grundpfeilern einer demokratischen Gesellschaft. Auffallend ist allerdings auch der immer rucksichtslosere Umgang mit den Persoenlichkeitsrechten des Einzelnen. Vor dem Hintergrund der wachsenden Macht der Medien stellt sich die Frage, ob das vorhandene System der Presseselbstkontrolle noch zeitgemass ist. Auf der Basis aktueller Falle wird eine kritische UEberprufung der Einhaltung ethischer und presserechtlicher Regeln vorgenommen und es werden neue Wege, aber auch Verbesserungsvorschlage und Loesungsmoeglichkeiten im Rahmen der Presseselbstkontrolle aufgezeigt.

Bevor Texte in den Massenmedien veroffentlicht werden, sind sie an verschiedenen Stellen im Nachrichtenfluss redigiert und dabei allmahlich verandert worden. Am Beispeil von Auslandsnachrichten der Deutschen Press-Agentur (dpa) aus London werden in der vorliegenden Arbeit die in der Nachrichtenagentur und anschlieBend bei 14 deutschen Tageszeitungen vorgenommenen Veranderungen linguistisch analysiert. Mit Hilfe eines eigens entwickelten Kategoriensystems werden die Veranderungen der Agentur-und Zeitungsredakteure im Hinblick auf ihre Art und ihre Ziele charakterisiert und miteinander kontrastriet, so dass die Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten im Bearbeitungsverhalten von Agentur- und Zeitungsredakteuren sowie von Redakteuren verschiedener Zeitungen deutlich werden.
