Asthma - Clinician's Desk Reference (Hardcover): J Douglas, Kurtis Elward Asthma - Clinician's Desk Reference (Hardcover)
J Douglas, Kurtis Elward
R6,301 Discovery Miles 63 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the series title implies each Clinician's Desk Reference is a practical resource and a daily aid for physicians in the hospital setting and in primary care. Asthma is one of the most important chronic disorders in the developed world. Evidence from around the world shows the prevalence of asthma has increased considerably since 1975, and now affects around 7.2% of the world population (about 100 million individuals). In the UK asthma is now the most common chronic disease affecting all age groups with approximately 11% of the population being diagnosed as having asthma at some time in their lives. Understanding of the basic mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of asthma has improved dramatically over the past 20 years. Along with this increase in basic scientific knowledge, randomized clinical trials have produced evidence to guide clinicians in how to manage patients with asthma. The book covers epidemiology, diagnosis and management, and takes a look at future developments. The authors highlight the under diagnosis of occupational asthma and emphasize the importance of effective patient education, particularly asthma action plans. There are ten clinical cases dealing with common diagnostic and management problems, frequently asked questions and appendices containing resources for patients and clinicians including useful websites, information leaflets and major references.

The Making of a Social Disease - Tuberculosis in Nineteenth-Century France (Hardcover, Reissue): David S. Barnes The Making of a Social Disease - Tuberculosis in Nineteenth-Century France (Hardcover, Reissue)
David S. Barnes
R2,243 Discovery Miles 22 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this first English-language study of popular and scientific responses to tuberculosis in nineteenth-century France, David Barnes provides a much-needed historical perspective on a disease that is making an alarming comeback in the United States and Europe. Barnes argues that French perceptions of the disease--ranging from the early romantic image of a consumptive woman to the later view of a scourge spread by the poor--owed more to the power structures of nineteenth-century society than to medical science. By 1900, the war against tuberculosis had become a war against the dirty habits of the working class.
Lucid and original, Barnes's study broadens our understanding of how and why societies assign moral meanings to deadly diseases.

The Microbiome in Respiratory Disease - Principles, Tools and Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Yvonne J. Huang, Stavros... The Microbiome in Respiratory Disease - Principles, Tools and Applications (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Yvonne J. Huang, Stavros Garantziotis
R3,666 Discovery Miles 36 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book comprehensively covers the microbiome in respiratory disease, from the initial research study to the disease-specific implications and related applications. Research on the respiratory microbiome is increasing in volume and scope. This reflects rapidly growing interest in the study of respiratory disease to understand how microbiota shape mechanisms of disease pathogenesis. The respiratory tract spans the nasal passages, sinus cavities, oropharynx, and the tracheobronchial tree of the lungs. In these compartments of the upper and lower respiratory tract, the microbiota have now been studied in the context of several chronic respiratory conditions. These include chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis, to name a few. The potential impact of ecological interactions (i.e., between microbes and between microbiota and host) within and across respiratory compartments is increasingly recognized. The book is organized into two main sections. Part I, Principles and Tools, covers conceptual modeling of the respiratory microbiome, experimental methodology with a focus on a priori considerations in study design and sampling, laboratory and computational methods for analysis of respiratory microbiome data, and minimizing interpretive pitfalls. Part II, Applications, discusses the evidence from specific studies that have shed novel insights into the influence of respiratory microbiota on mechanisms or outcomes in specific diseases. Based on current best evidence, disease-specific chapters include chronic rhinosinusitis, asthma (pediatric and adult studies), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis (CF), bronchiectasis not due to CF, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and lung transplant. This is an ideal reference for forward-thinking practitioners with interest in novel developments in precision medicine applications in lung disease, as well as translational scientists in the field of microbiology, immunology and lung biology.

Critical Care of COVID-19 in the Emergency Department (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Joseph R. Shiber Critical Care of COVID-19 in the Emergency Department (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Joseph R. Shiber
R2,149 Discovery Miles 21 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book functions as a comprehensive manual for emergency care providers who are treating critically ill COVID-19 patients. Beginning with an overview of the COVID-19 infection and an examination of the patients who received critical care from hospital emergency departments around the country, this book provides clinicians with a guide to best-practices in everything from personal protection while deploying critical care to COVID-19 patients to evaluation and diagnosis of the illness. Subsequent chapters break down care of various comorbidities seen in COVID-19 patients and the care offered to patients suffering from the illness in a multitude of ways. Closing chapters examine how emergency departments can best prepare for potential surges in COVID-19 patients as the illness continues to develop, providing important information on how to best protect hospital employees and best care for future patients in a constantly shifting landscape. Due to the rapid onset of the illness and strong-hold the pandemic had on the lives and careers of healthcare professionals, Critical Care of COVID-19 in the Emergency Department fills a critical gap in the literature available on this topic.
