Dialogue Games - An Approach to Discourse Analysis (Hardcover, 1985 ed.): L Carlson Dialogue Games - An Approach to Discourse Analysis (Hardcover, 1985 ed.)
L Carlson
R4,548 Discovery Miles 45 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This essay constitutes yet another approach to the fields of inquiry variously known as discourse analysis, discourse grammar, text grammar, functional 1 syntax, or text linguistics. An attempt is made to develop a fairly abstract unified theoretical frame work for the description of discourse which actually helps explain concrete facts of the discourse grammar of a naturallanguage.2 This plan is reflected in the division of the study into two parts. In the first part, a semiformal framework for describing conversational discourse is developed in some detail. In the second part, this framework is applied to the functional syntax of English. The relation of the discourse grammar of Part II to the descriptive frame work of Part I can be instructively compared to the relation of Tarskian semantics to model theory. Tarski's semantics defmes a concept of truth of a sentence in a model, an independently identified construct. Analogously, my rules of discourse grammar defme a concept of appropriateness of a sentence to a given context. The task of the first Part of the essay is to characterize the relevant notion of context. Although my original statement of the problem was linguistic - how to describe the meaning, or function, of certain aspects of word order and intonation - Part I is largely an application of various methods and results of philosophical logic. The justification of the interdisciplinary approach is the simplicity and naturalness of the eventual answers to specific linguistic problems in Part II."

Children's Voices - Talk, Knowledge and Identity (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): J. Maybin Children's Voices - Talk, Knowledge and Identity (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
J. Maybin
R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on ethnographic research inside and outside the classroom, Janet Maybin investigates how 10-12 year-old children use talk and literacy to construct knowledge about their social worlds and about themselves, as they negotiate the transition from childhood into adolescence. Through the analysis of examples of talk, she shows how children use collaborative verbal strategies, stories of personal experience and the reworked voices of others to investigate the moral order and forge their own identities.

Oratory and Rhetoric in the Nineteenth-Century South - A Rhetoric of Defense (Hardcover, New): W.Stuart Towns Oratory and Rhetoric in the Nineteenth-Century South - A Rhetoric of Defense (Hardcover, New)
W.Stuart Towns
R2,776 Discovery Miles 27 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The only modern collection of speeches by southerners on the themes that have shaped the history and culture of the region, this anthology, which spans eighty tumultuous years of southern history, reflects the strategies of southern orators as they attempted to defend the indefensible, as well as those few who advocated a more compassionate South. Southern leaders were judged largely by their oratorical ability and their skills in defending the southern way of life. Accordingly, they placed much emphasis on developing consummate rhetorical skills. Thus, one can read the history of the region in the speeches of its politicians, ministers, and other public figures. Beginning in 1820 with the debates over the admission of Missouri to the Union, many southerners took a defensive posture against those forces from outside the region which they saw as threats to their culture. While the rhetoric of most southern leaders was clearly defensive, one must remember that they were dealing with the difficult issues of slavery; the relationship of federal and state government; their vision of the ideal society; the coming civil war and its aftermath; and living in a defeated, desolate, war-torn region. As demagogic, defensive, and archaic as they may seem today, these speakers developed and expanded patterns of thought and rhetorical strategy that echoed throughout the region. The collective memory that they created would shape their contemporaries and affect the lives of generations to follow.

How to Do Critical Discourse Analysis - A Multimodal Introduction (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): David Machin, Andrea Mayr How to Do Critical Discourse Analysis - A Multimodal Introduction (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
David Machin, Andrea Mayr
R3,283 Discovery Miles 32 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

How is language used? This book sheds light on the different ways language can be used for different outcomes. Machin and Mayr examine how discourses signify ideas, values and identities through implicit and complex semiotic choices. With a focus on a multimodal approach - Images, tables and case studies - the book guides students to an understanding of how subtle plays of co-operation, negotiation and deception are played out in everyday media texts. The book is approachable and accessible for social science and linguistic students, with a focus on using material to design projects and help answers your specific questions. Alongside this, the diverse range of methodological approaches such as Appraisal Theory and Conversation Analysis will allow you to gain a wider understanding into Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and understand the relationship between language and social practices. Addressing communication in our post-modern society, the book has a unique and compelling point of view of contemporary examples of CDA - but never oversimplifies it. David Machin is a lecturer at Cardiff University. Andrea Mayr is an Assistant Professor at Zayed University, UAE.

The Extent of the Literal - Metaphor, Polysemy and Theories of Concepts (Hardcover, New): M. Rakova The Extent of the Literal - Metaphor, Polysemy and Theories of Concepts (Hardcover, New)
M. Rakova
R2,859 Discovery Miles 28 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Extent of the Literal develops a strikingly new approach to metaphor and polysemy in their relation to the conceptual structure. In a straightforward narrative style, the author argues for a reconsideration of standard assumptions concerning the notion of literal meaning and its relation to conceptual structure. She draws on neurophysiological and psychological experimental data in support of a view in which polysemy belongs to the level of words but not to the level of concepts, and thus challenges some seminal work on metaphor and polysemy within cognitive linguistics, lexical semantics and analytical philosophy.

Cultural Interactions of English-Medium Instruction at Vietnamese Universities - The Western Proposition by the Eastern... Cultural Interactions of English-Medium Instruction at Vietnamese Universities - The Western Proposition by the Eastern Implementation (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2023)
Thi Quynh Huong Luu, Helena Hing Wa Sit, Shen Chen
R3,618 Discovery Miles 36 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a case study of English-Medium Instruction (EMI) implemented by universities in Vietnam, making valuable theoretical, empirical, and methodological contributions to the research in EMI which is currently a popular theme in the field of Higher Education. The importance of internationalization of higher education has been widely recognized by many countries all over the world. The spread of English as an international language has resulted in its crucial role in teaching and learning any disciplines. Globally, higher education in many non-English speaking countries has witnessed rapid expansion of (EMI) which was initiated in Europe, then to Asia and other continents which are featured with "Cultural Circles" spread in the world. Although there are many publications with the same theme available today, this monograph is unique because it is the first time to examine EMI classroom interaction from the cultural perspective specifically rather than from linguistic or pedagogical perspectives. It is a pioneering attempt to discuss in depth about cultural issues relating to EMI, namely (1) the social-cultural context of EMI classes in higher education; (2) the cultural backgrounds of EMI teachers and learners; and (3) culture interactions between teachers and learners in EMI classrooms. In addition, both quantitative and qualitative methods are employed to collect data from teachers and learners. Finally, a context-based model of EMI is proposed based on findings of this research. As a country within the Confucius Heritage Cultural Circle, Vietnam has been selected for this study because few studies to date are carried out in how EMI is culturally integrated to teaching and learning in the Vietnamese universities. This book is a joint effort by international academics, prepared for established scholars, researchers, educators, and research higher degree students who are interested in higher education, second and foreign language education and EMI teacher training.

Textual Metonymy - A Semiotic Approach (Hardcover): A. Al-Sharafi Textual Metonymy - A Semiotic Approach (Hardcover)
A. Al-Sharafi
R2,881 Discovery Miles 28 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Textual Metonymy" employs a theoretical framework combining rhetoric, figurative theory and textlinguistics. In the process, a very full historical account of treatments of metonymy from classical traditions up to the present time is given and critiqued. The author proposes a semiotic approach to the treatment of metonymy, on the basis of which a textual model of metonymy as a process of representation is developed to account for text cohesion and text coherence.

Language Acquisition and the Functional Category System (Hardcover): Peter Jordens Language Acquisition and the Functional Category System (Hardcover)
Peter Jordens
R4,979 Discovery Miles 49 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Research on spontaneous language acquisition both in children learning their mother tongue and in adults learning a second language has shown that language development proceeds in a stagewise manner. Learner utterances are accounted for in terms of so-called 'learner languages'. Learner languages of both children and adults are language systems that are initially rather simple. The present monograph shows how these learner languages develop both in child L1 and in adult L2 Dutch. At the initial stage of both L1 and L2 Dutch, learner systems are lexical systems. This means that utterance structure is determined by the lexical projection of a predicate-argument structure, while the functional properties of the target language are absent. At some point in acquisition, this lexical-semantic system develops into a target-like system. With this target-like system, learners have reached a stage at which their language system has the morpho-syntactic features to express the functional properties of finiteness and topicality. Evidence of this is word order variation and the use of linguistic elements such as auxiliaries, tense, and agreement markers and determiners. Looking at this process of language acquisition from a functional point of view, the author focuses on questions such as the following. What is the driving force behind the process that causes learners to give up a simple lexical-semantic system in favour of a functional-pragmatic one? What is the added value of linguistic features such as the morpho-syntactic properties of inflection, word order variation, and definiteness?

Paradigms of Reading - Relevance Theory and Deconstruction (Hardcover): I MacKenzie, Ian MacKenzie Paradigms of Reading - Relevance Theory and Deconstruction (Hardcover)
I MacKenzie, Ian MacKenzie
R2,876 Discovery Miles 28 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Linguistic signs do not coincide with intended or interpreted meanings. For relevance theory, this theoretical commonplace merely demonstrates the inferential nature of language. For Paul de Man, on the contrary, it suggested that language is unstable, random, arbitrary, mechanical, ironic and inhuman. This book seeks to show that relevance theory is a more plausible account of communication, cognition and literary interpretation than the deconstructionist theory de Man elaborated from readings of Rousseau, Hegel, and Nietzsche.

Saying, Meaning and Referring - Essays on Francois Recanati's Philosophy of Language (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): M. Frapolli Saying, Meaning and Referring - Essays on Francois Recanati's Philosophy of Language (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
M. Frapolli
R1,525 Discovery Miles 15 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The distinguished philosopher of language, Francois Recanati, has proposed a wide-ranging truth-conditional model of pragmatics. In this collection, various aspects of his theories are addressed by distinguished contributors, and are then commented on or answered by Recanati himself so that the reader is drawn into the central debate within philosophy of language and cognitive science as to what kind of pragmatics system is needed.

Shakespeare's Visual Regime - Tragedy, Psychoanalysis and the Gaze (Hardcover, New): P. Armstrong Shakespeare's Visual Regime - Tragedy, Psychoanalysis and the Gaze (Hardcover, New)
P. Armstrong
R1,522 Discovery Miles 15 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Can postmodern accounts of the gaze--deriving from the psychoanalytic theories of Freud, Lacan, Fanon, and Riviere—tell us anything about those structures of vision prior to, and repressed by, modernity? Shakespeare's Visual Regime examines the tragedies, histories, and Roman plays for an emergent early modern spectatorial subject, thereby locating Shakespearean theater within those discourses most crucial to the contemporary exposition and disruption of regimes of vision: perspective painting, cartography, optics, geometry, Puritan anti-theatrical polemic, and the occult.

Lexical Diversity and Language Development - Quantification and Assessment (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): D. Malvern, B Richards, N.... Lexical Diversity and Language Development - Quantification and Assessment (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
D. Malvern, B Richards, N. Chipere, P. Duran
R2,881 Discovery Miles 28 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Vocabulary richness, including lexical diversity and use of rare words, has an important role in assessing proficiency, diagnosing progress and testing theory in the study of language development. This book first reviews different methods for quantifying how vocabulary is deployed in spontaneous speech and writing, and then introduces an alternative approach which can assess overall lexical diversity, measure morphology development and compare the development of different word classes. The new approach is illustrated by its application to first and second language learners.

Development of the Syntax-Discourse Interface (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): S. Avrutin Development of the Syntax-Discourse Interface (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
S. Avrutin
R3,002 Discovery Miles 30 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book, I address several issues of child linguistic development from the perspective of the syntax -discourse interface. Traditionally, language acquisition research has focused on the development of one of the linguistic modules, e.g. acquisition of syntax, morphology or phonology. While this approach can be viewed as fruitful in some cases, there is a number of linguistic phenomena whose explanation depends on the interaction of different modules and, therefore, different domains of linguistic knowledge. A typical example is pronominal anaphora: It can be shown that to correctly use pronominal elements, normal adult speakers must possess both syntactic and pragmatic knowledge, and that these kinds of knowledge must interact with each other. With regard to the language acquisition process, such phenomena suggest a somewhat different approach to the language acquisition research. Indeed, if some experimental studies show that children make errors in the construction under investigation, it will be necessary to consider these results from the point of view of the interaction of the different domains of linguistic knowledge involved in their interpretation. In other words, if this particular construction requires the integration of, for example, syntactic and discourse-based knowledge, children's errors may, in principle, be due to their lack of the former, the latter, or both kinds of knowledge, and cannot be taken as direct evidence for the "underdeveloped" status of just one of them.

Interpretation as Pragmatics (Hardcover): J. Lecercle Interpretation as Pragmatics (Hardcover)
J. Lecercle
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why is it that all interpretations are possible, and none is true? That some interpretations are just, but some are false? Lecercle draws on the resources of pragmatics, literary theory and the philosophy of language to propose a new theory of literary, but also of face to face, dialogue that charts the interaction between the five participants in the fields of dialogue and/or interpretation: author, reader, text, language and encyclopaedia. Interpretation is taken through its four stages, from glossing and enigma solving to translation and intervention.

R4,480 Discovery Miles 44 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

As a usage-based language theory, cognitive linguistics is predestined to have an impact on applied research in such areas as language in society, ideology, language acquisition, language pedagogy. The present volumes are a first systematic attempt to carve out pathways from the links between language and cognition to the fields of language acquisition and language pedagogy and to deal with them in one coherent framework: applied cognitive linguistics.

Frege on Definitions - A Case Study of Semantic Content (Hardcover): John Horty Frege on Definitions - A Case Study of Semantic Content (Hardcover)
John Horty
R2,121 Discovery Miles 21 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this short monograph, John Horty explores the difficulties presented for Gottlob Frege's semantic theory, as well as its modern descendents, by the treatment of defined expressions.
The book begins by focusing on the psychological constraints governing Frege's notion of sense, or meaning, and argues that, given these constraints, even the treatment of simple stipulative definitions led Frege to important difficulties. Horty is able to suggest ways out of these difficulties that are both philosophically and logically plausible and Fregean in spirit. This discussion is then connected to a number of more familiar topics, such as indexicality and the discussion of concepts in recent theories of mind and language.
In the latter part of the book, after introducing a simple semantic model of senses as procedures, Horty considers the problems that definitions present for Frege's idea that the sense of an expression should mirror its grammatical structure. The requirement can be satisfied, he argues, only if defined expressions--and incomplete expressions as well--are assigned senses of their own, rather than treated contextually. He then explores one way in which these senses might be reified within the procedural model, drawing on ideas from work in the semantics of computer programming languages.
With its combination of technical semantics and history of philosophy, Horty's book tackles some of the hardest questions in the philosophy of language. It should interest philosophers, logicians, and linguists.

Ari Huhta, Claudia Harsch, Dmitri Leontjev, Lea Nieminen
R4,093 Discovery Miles 40 930 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The Diagnosis of Writing in a Second or Foreign Language is a comprehensive survey of diagnostic assessment of second/foreign language (SFL) writing. In this innovative book, a compelling case is made for SFL writing as an individual, contextual, and multidimensional ability, combining several theoretically informed approaches upon which to base diagnosis. Using the diagnostic cycle as the overarching framework, the book starts with the planning phase, cover design, development, and delivery of diagnostic assessment, ending with feedback and feed-forward aspects to feed diagnostic information into the teaching and learning process. It covers means to diagnose both the writing processes and products, including the design and development of diagnostic tasks and rating scales, as well as automated approaches to assessment. Also included is a range of existing instruments and approaches to diagnosing SFL writing. Addressing large-scale as well as classroom contexts, this volume is useful for researchers, teachers, and educational policy-makers in language learning.
