A blueprint for the nation after the boom.
"Hope and the Future" presents a provocative examination of what being optimistic about the future ultimately depends on. It describes how we face a growing number of human challenges that require that we think, act, and relate in new ways-often fundamentally new ways. And it looks at how effectively addressing those challenges will require not just fresh ideas, but a critical "growing up" as a species-a new Cultural Maturity. This short book introduces the concept of Cultural Maturity and examines how the changes it describes will be necessary to a future that is at all healthy-and perhaps even survivable. It also looks at ways in which Cultural Maturity's changes are already happening, and how, when we are ready for them, needed changes can seem surprisingly straightforward; indeed, like common sense. Hope and the Future is an exploration of the "new common sense" on which our future depends.
What will America do when robots render 50% of its human workforce obsolete? Accelerating progress in artificial intelligence and robotics ensures that mass human obsolescence will arrive sooner than we might expect. And it won't stop there. Economic incentives will relentlessly drive advances in robotics until robots displace the entire human workforce. How will Americans survive? Who will support them? Can a human reasonably hope to control robots that are smarter than he is? Are Asimov's laws adequate? Is a robot-human war inevitable? How can we smoothly transition from having no intelligent robots to being overrun by them? How do we avoid violence and privation on the way to becoming a robot nation? Tackling these questions head on, Robot Nation not only describes the stark consequences of mass human obsolescence, it lays out solutions and argues that these require unprecedented changes in the political, economic, social, and moral underpinnings of Western civilization.
* THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * * Future-proof yourself and your business by reading this book * Technological advances have benefited our world in immeasurable ways, but there is an ominous flipside. Criminals are often the earliest, and most innovative, adopters of technology and modern times have led to modern crimes. Today's criminals are stealing identities, draining online bank-accounts and wiping out computer servers. It's disturbingly easy to activate baby cam monitors to spy on families, pacemakers can be hacked to deliver a lethal jolt, and thieves are analyzing your social media in order to determine the best time for a home invasion. Meanwhile, 3D printers produce AK-47s, terrorists can download the recipe for the Ebola virus, and drug cartels are building drones. This is just the beginning of the tsunami of technological threats coming our way. In Future Crimes, Marc Goodman rips open his database of hundreds of real cases to give us front-row access to these impending perils. Reading like a sci-fi thriller, but based in startling fact, Goodman raises tough questions about the expanding role of technology in our lives. Future Crimes is a call to action for better security measures worldwide, but most importantly, will empower readers to protect themselves against these looming technological threats - before it's too late.
The purpose of the book is to provide an applied, practical, yet theoretically grounded, reference on social influence strategies for environmental behavior change. The book is intended to be used as a professional reference by practitioners in governmental and nongovernmental organizations worldwide. The book is also intended to be used as a text by students of environmental science, environmental communication and environmental education.
How are borders built in the modern world? What does Brexit mean for Ireland's border? And what would happen if Elon Musk declared himself president of the Moon? In Border Wars, Professor Klaus Dodds takes us on a journey into the geopolitical conflict of tomorrow in an eye-opening tour of the world's best-known, most dangerous and most unexpected border conflicts from the Gaza Strip to the space race. Along the way, we'll discover just what border truly mean in the modern world: how are they built; what do they mean for citizens and governments; how do they help understand our political past and, most importantly, our diplomatic future?
Human civilization faces more challenges than ever before. Unless
urgent action is taken, there will soon be biting shortages of
energy, food and fresh water. Climate change also demands our
attention, while conventional economic decision making and mass
consumerism are leading us to ruin. The time has therefore come to
fix the world.
At the beginning of the 20th Century, no one could have predicted men walking on the moon, transcontinental jet air travel and of course, the personal computer revolution. And yet, all this happened before the close of the 20th Century. We are now at the beginning of a new century, but what lies ahead is anyone's guess. This book takes us on a whirlwind tour of human progress and achievement, highlighting many astonishing new ideas that may transform our lives during the course of the 21st Century.

Brilliant. A must read for every voter. Reminiscent of George Orwell s 1984. Unlike anything written on the subject. These are some of the comments from readers of Judge David Minier s future history, One Nation, under Obamas . . . Written from the viewpoint of a liberal historian, and illustrated with photographs from the future, this book chronicles America s descent into tyranny from the present until 2021, when a Joint Resolution to Repeal the Twenty Second Amendment is introduced in Congress so Barack Obama can serve a third term as President. In the ten year interim, American citizens have gradually surrendered their freedoms to an ever more powerful state. Michelle Obama has succeeded her husband as President, and America has become a one party state. Barack Obama is now President of the United Nations. The Supreme Court has been packed with four more liberal judges, talk radio has been silenced, books have been placed on the Seditious Literature List and banned from sale, and citizen riots have been brutally suppressed. The loyalty oath of public officials and military personnel had been amended to require defense and support of the President, United States Army officers have been executed for treason, and under Obamas has replaced under God in the Pledge of Allegiance. America has abandoned its nuclear weapons, placed its armed forces under United Nations command, acquiesced to Russian and Islamic expansionism, and become the world s forth ranking economy. The future history portrayed in One Nation, under Obamas . . . is a liberal s dream come true and a conservative s worst nightmare. Whether or not it becomes true is up to the American voter.

"Quick and Dirty Answers to the Biggest of Questions "addresses how the new kind of understanding we need today, besides helping us confront modern-day challenges, also brings a new creativity of perspective to more ultimate questions. It describes how many such ultimate questions have baffled us not because they are inherently difficult, but becase they require a maturity of understanding of which we are only now becoming capable. This short book uses the thinking of Creative Systems Theory to take on some of the most important and timely of such quesions. Some examples: -How do we best understand the times in which we live? -How do we best understand the human story as a whole? -Why, at different times in history, has human understanding taken the forms that it has? -How do we best understand the experience of free will? -Are the beliefs of science and religion just different or, instead, parts of a larger picture? -What is our place in the larger scheme of things? These questions share a common bond: they are systemic, and systemic in a particular sense we are only beginning to fully grasp. "Quick and Dirty Answers"describes how the needed answers to these questions are in fact straightforward, indeed rather common sense. What is new and different is that this is a sort of common sense that we are only beginning to be able to get our minds around. "Quick and Dirty Answers to the Biggest of Questions"is intended for people who find particular fascination with overarching, "theory of everything" reflection.
This book forecasts the world of 2030, which predictions estimate, will be radically transformed from our world today. By 2030, no country, whether the U.S., China, or any other large country, will be a hegemonic power. The empowerment of individuals and diffusion of power among states and from states to informal networks will have a dramatic impact, largely reversing the historic rise of the West since 1750, restoring Asia's weight in the global economy, and ushering in a new era of "democratisation" at the international and domestic level. In addition to individual empowerment and the diffusion of state power, two other megatrends will shape our world out to 2030: demographic patterns, especially rapid ageing; and growing resource demands which, in the cases of food and water, might lead to scarcities. These trends, which are virtually certain, exist today, but during the next 1520 years will gain much greater momentum. Underpinning the megatrends are tectonic shifts (ie: critical changes to key features of our global environment that will affect how the world "works").
THE MOST FRIGHTENING TRUE STORY EVERY TOLD On March 20, 1969, Dr. Lawrence Dunegan listened as a member of "The Order" delivered a hair-raising speech to a room full of doctors. He and the others were told not to record what they were hearing but, instead to take notes. The speaker insisted that he was doing the doctors a favor by explaining how the world was going to change. He said he believed if they knew, they would be better prepared to accept the coming changes. Anyone can read this book and know these changes are well underway. What we didn't know was where these changes have been taking us. Until now Lock the doors, pull the curtains and prepare to see what you may never have realized. Once you understand the plan, you cannot help but to see it advancing all around you. The biggest question of all is not should we but, how can we... stop what is happening? Inside these pages is the transcript of three taped interviews on the "New Order of Barbarians," referred to on the tapes simply as the "new world system." Tapes one and two are the reminiscences by Dr. Lawrence Dunegan of a speech given in 1969 by an insider of "The Order," Dr. Richard Day, whose credentials are listed as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics for the University of Pittsburgh; Medical Director of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and member of The Order."
Where are we heading? Stripped of all the hype and fantasy - where really is the world economy set to take us by 2040? Those of us alive today are on an extraordinary course: For several decades our future has largely been determined by a handful of relatively-obscure trends that together generate the awesome propulsion of a High-Tech engine that is launching the international community on a voyage into completely unfamiliar territory. But where will we all end up? Based on unparalleled insights into what organizations across the globe are actually doing, for the first time the world's foremost expert on the hidden inner-workings of society explains in simple and accessible language exactly where the most deeply-established trends are taking us. How, despite claims that its accelerating progress is not sustainable for much longer, Digitization is on an inexorable course to a mind-blowing society of virtual-assistants, robot cars, cyborgs and everything on-the-record. And how Networking will combine with Digitization to lead by 2040 to computers capable of human-like interaction and an internet a billion times more powerful than today's. Dr. Scott-Morgan reveals how the Miniaturization trend offers nanotech breakthroughs ranging from cancer treatments to quantum computing - but not, as has often been claimed, Star-Trek Replicators or the threat of 'grey goo'. And he shows how exponential Simulation will support fundamental and sweeping advances that lead to almost limitless electricity and maybe almost limitless life-extension. Our world is set for a Global Renaissance. However, the backdraft of the High-Tech launch engine is also stirring up a turbulence of unintended consequences that threaten to disrupt our trajectory. Rather than Global Renaissance, we would then enter Global Chaos. Yet these are not ordinary times. In the startling conclusion to his book, Dr. Scott-Morgan reveals how in only the last couple of years a brand new exponential trend has begun to emerge out of the turbulence. In terms of influencing our destination - whether we end up in a Global Renaissance or in Global Chaos - it is that trend that will be the most important one of all. NOTE: This is the companion volume to 'The Reality of Global Crises' by the same author.
All the political systems of the modern age have been the products of three distinct ideologies: the first, and oldest, is liberal democracy; the second is Marxism; and the third is fascism. The latter two have long since failed and passed out of the pages of history, and the first no longer operates as an ideology, but rather as something taken for granted. The world today finds itself on the brink of a post-political reality - one in which the values of liberalism are so deeply embedded that the average person is not aware that there is an ideology at work around him. As a result, liberalism is threatening to monopolise political discourse and drown the world in a universal sameness, destroying everything that makes the various cultures and peoples unique. According to Alexander Dugin, what is needed to break through this morass is a fourth ideology - one that will sift through the debris of the first three to look for elements that might be useful, but that remains innovative and unique in itself. Dugin does not offer a point-by-point program for this new theory, but rather outlines the parameters within which it might develop and the issues which it must address. Dugin foresees that the Fourth Political Theory will use the tools and concepts of modernity against itself, to bring about a return of cultural diversity against commercialisation, as well as the traditional worldview of all the peoples of the world - albeit within an entirely new context. Written by a scholar who is actively influencing the direction of Russian geopolitical strategy today, The Fourth Political Theory is an introduction to an idea that may well shape the course of the world's political future. Alexander Dugin (b. 1962) is one of the best-known writers and political commentators in post-Soviet Russia. In addition to the many books he has authored on political, philosophical and spiritual topics, he currently serves on the staff of Moscow State University, and is the intellectual leader of the Eurasia Movement. For more than a decade, he has also been an advisor to Vladimir Putin and others in the Kremlin on geopolitical matters, being a vocal advocate of a return of Russian power to the global stage, to act as a counterweight to American domination.
