Decentering Comparative Analysis in a Globalizing World aims to go
beyond the traditional criticism in comparative analysis. It wants
to shed new light on the question of comparing as a form of
categorizing. In this perspective, three relevant dimensions to
question the naturalized categories of comparison are mobilized:
ethnocentrism, the nation, and academic disciplines. Based on
original empirical work, the volume proposes to use comparative
categories by mixing and shifting the analytical perspectives. It
brings together contributions that come to terms with the
historicity of the comparative method in the social sciences. It
eventually deals with the key issue of comparability of various
cases, in the enlarged context of a globalizing world. Contributors

This book presents cross-sectional and cross-time analyses at the
territorial level targeted by these initiatives focusing on the
design, theory and impacts of urban projects developed under the
framework of initiatives promoted by the European Union. The book
includes a new methodology to analyse the design and theory of
urban plans (the comparative urban portfolio analysis) and
quasi-experimental strategies to perform impact assessment at the
neighbourhood level (the territorial target of those initiatives).
Although empirical analyses focus on examples in Spain, the
resulting analytical and methodological outcomes of these studies
can be applied in a broader context to analyse integral urban
policies in other countries.

people who use illicit drugs. Stigma is powerful: it can do untold
harm to a person and place with longstanding effects. Through an
exploration of themes of inequality, power, and feeling 'out of
place' in neoliberal times, this collection focuses on how stigma
is negotiated, resisted and absorbed by people who use drugs. How
does stigma get under the skin? Drawing on a range of theoretical

The seminal medieval history of the Second Commonwealth period of
ancient Jewish history. Sepher Yosippon was written in Hebrew by a
medieval historian and noted by modern scholars for its eloquent
style. This is the first known chronicle of Jewish history and
legend-from Adam to the destruction of the Second Temple-since the
canonical histories written by Flavius Josephus in Greek and later
translated by Christian scholars into Latin. Sepher Yosippon has
been cited and referred to by scholars, poets, and authors as the
authentic source for ancient Israel for over a millennium, until
overshadowed by the twentiethcentury Hebrew translations of
Josephus. It is based on Pseudo Hegesippus's fourth-century
anti-Jewish summary of Josephus's Jewish War. However, the
anonymous author (a.k.a. Joseph ben Gurion Hacohen) also consulted
with the Latin versions of Josephus's works available to him. At
the same time, he included a wealth of Second Temple literature as
well as Roman and Christian sources. This book contains Steven
Bowman's translation of the complete text of David Flusser's
standard Hebrew edition of Sepher Yosippon, which includes the
later medieval interpolations referring to Jesus. The present
English edition also contains the translator's introduction as well
as a preface by the fifteenth-century publisher of the book. The
anonymous author of this text remains unique for his approach to
history, his use of sources, and his almost secular attitude, which
challenges the modern picture of medieval Jews living in a
religious age. In his influential novel, A Guest for the Night, the
Nobel Laureate author Shmuel Yosef Agnon emphasized the importance
of Sepher Yosippon as a valuable reading to understand human
nature. Bowman's translation of Flusser's notes, as well as his own
scholarship, offers a well-wrought story for scholars and students
interested in Jewish legend and history in the medieval period,
Jewish studies, medieval literature, and folklore studies.
Behind the scenes of the many artists and innovators flourishing
beyond the bounds of intellectual property laws Intellectual
property law, or IP law, is based on certain assumptions about
creative behavior. The case for regulation assumes that creators
have a fundamental legal right to prevent copying, and without this
right they will under-invest in new work. But this premise fails to
fully capture the reality of creative production. It ignores the
range of powerful non-economic motivations that compel creativity,
and it overlooks the capacity of creative industries for
self-governance and innovative social and market responses to
appropriation. This book reveals the on-the-ground practices of a
range of creators and innovators. In doing so, it challenges
intellectual property orthodoxy by showing that incentives for
creative production often exist in the absence of, or in disregard
for, formal legal protections. Instead, these communities rely on
evolving social norms and market responses-sensitive to their
particular cultural, competitive, and technological
circumstances-to ensure creative incentives. From tattoo artists to
medical researchers, Nigerian filmmakers to roller derby players,
the communities illustrated in this book demonstrate that
creativity can thrive without legal incentives, and perhaps more
strikingly, that some creative communities prefer, and thrive, in
environments defined by self-regulation rather than legal rules.
Beyond their value as descriptions of specific industries and
communities, the accounts collected here help to ground debates
over IP policy in the empirical realities of the creative process.
Their parallels and divergences also highlight the value of rules
that are sensitive to the unique mix of conditions and motivations
of particular industries and communities, rather than the
monoculture of uniform regulation of the current IP system.

This is an engaging autobiographical account of a young American
woman's life in her Samoan husband's native home. Fay Calkins, a
descendant of Puritan settlers, met Vai Ala'ilima, a descendant of
Samoan chiefs, while working on her doctoral dissertation in the
Library of Congress. After an unconventional courtship and a
typical American wedding, they set out for Western Samoa, where Fay
was to find a way of life totally new and charming, if at times
frustrating and confusing. Soon after her arrival in the islands,
the bride of a few months found herself with a family of seven boys
in a wide range of ages, sent by relatives to live with the new
couple. She was stymied by the economics of trying to support
numerous guests, relatives, and a growing family, and still
contribute to the lavish feasts that were given on any
pretext--feasts, where the guests brought baskets in which to take
home as much of the largesse as they could carry. Fay tried to
introduce American institutions: a credit union, a co-op, a work
schedule, and hourly wages on the banana plantation begun by her
and her husband. In each instance, she quickly learned that Samoans
were unwilling or unable to grasp her Western ideas of input
equaling output, of personal property, or of payment received for
work done. Despite these frustrations and disappointments, however,
life among the people of her Samoan chief was for Fay happy and
productive.

various manifestations - to Coppola's films, exploring fashion's

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery estimates there
are about two-and-a-half million Botox procedures performed
annually, and that number continues to increase. The procedure is
used as a preventive measure against aging and a means by which
bodies, particularly women's, can be transformed and "improved"
through the appearance of youth. But why is Botox so popular, and
why is aging such a terrifying concept? Botox Nation draws from
engaging, in-depth interviews with Botox users and providers as
well as Dana Berkowitz's own experiences receiving the injections.
The interviews reveal the personal motivations for using Botox and
help unpack how anti-aging practices are conceived by, and resonate
with, everyday people. Berkowitz is particularly interested in how
Botox is now being targeted to younger women; since Botox is a
procedure that must be continually administered to work, the
strategic choice to market to younger women, Berkowitz argues, aims
to create lifetime consumers. Berkowitz also analyzes magazine
articles, advertisements, and even medical documents to consider
how narratives of aging are depicted. She employs a critical
feminist lens to consider the construction of feminine bodies and

aimed at maintaining the desired appearance of youth, the culture

seemingly healthy bodies, and the growth and technological
advancement to the anti-aging industry. A captivating and critical
story, Botox Nation examines how norms about bodies, gender, and
aging are constructed and reproduced on both cultural and
individual levels.
