Rebecca Ann Lind
R1,007 Discovery Miles 10 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The netted human we may call Homo Irretitus resides in a space made possible by technologies frequently referred to as new media, social media, emerging media, and Web 2.0. Traditional conceptualizations of audiences and producers are shifting so the very making of our social practices, spaces, and contexts in this brave new world of the World Wide Web, the work of Homo Irretitus in this intersectional space, must be interrogated. If we are to understand this space, we should approach it from varied vantage points. This book gathers scholars from both within and external to the core of new media studies, each of whom applies a unique theoretical perspective to the intersection of audience and production in the space enabled by emerging communications technologies. In doing so they help shed light on a variety of the tensions evident in the new digital spaces in which we create and recreate (and often produse) so much of our lives, our identities, and our selves. Focusing multiple spotlights on the intersection of audiences and production made possible by social software helps make clearer a more nuanced perspective than would otherwise be possible as well as opening up questions for further debate within the field.

Reading Biblical Greek - A Grammar for Students (Hardcover): Richard J. Gibson, Constantine R Campbell Reading Biblical Greek - A Grammar for Students (Hardcover)
Richard J. Gibson, Constantine R Campbell
R699 Discovery Miles 6 990 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Reading Biblical Greek introduces first-year Greek students to the essential information needed to optimize their grasp of the fundamentals of the Greek language-no more and no less-enabling them to read and translate the Greek of the New Testament as soon as possible. The learning approach in Reading Biblical Greek revolves around three core elements: grammar, vocabulary, and reading & translation. Grammar. The grammar consists of micro-lessons, which break up information in small, digestible chunks. Each micro-lesson addresses a single point. This arrangement makes for easy comprehension and review. It also allows the teacher to pace the material based on its difficulty and ability of their students. New learning is incremental and recursive-each new piece builds on and reinforces prior learning. Lessons are structured in three columns: 1) Introducing new topic; 2) Material to be memorized; and 3) Examples and exercises. Vocabulary. As an essential complement to grammar, vocabulary is introduced at strategic points and is arranged first by what the student has been learning in grammar, and then by frequency. The vocabulary lists are collated at the back of the book for easy access. The first 13 vocabulary lists are keyed to Mark 1-4 to help students to integrate their vocabulary learning with a "real" Greek text. Reading & Translation. The goal of this grammar is to enable students to read and translate the Greek of the New Testament. Thus, the content is structured and tied to a specific Greek text to enable reading as soon as possible. The student will have read and translated the whole of Mark 1-4 by the end of the course. The accompanying Reading Biblical Greek Workbook is a vital part of the approach. It breaks up the text of Mark 1-4 into manageable portions and provides vocabulary and grammatical assistance as required. While Reading Biblical Greek only introduces students to information that is essential to grasp of the fundamentals of the Greek language, it is informed by the latest and best of Greek and linguistic scholarship, enabling students to move seamlessly to further study.

Grounded in the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM), a usage-based meaning construction model of language of recent design, this research argues that illocutionary meaning either results from filling in constructional variables such as X in the Can You XVP? construction or from affording access to abstract situational cognitive models through the metonymic activation of relevant elements of their structure. One such model is the Cost-Benefit Cognitive Model, which is incorporated into the description of pragmatic meaning and presented as lying at the core of the conventionalization process of illocutionary constructions. The inferential path based on the instantiation of the Cost-Benefit Cognitive Model determines the activation of speech act values that may become conventionalized within a linguistic community. The study determines the applicability of the analytical tools developed by the LCM for illocutionary description. The illocutionary acts selected are those proposed by the Cost-Benefit Cognitive Model as exploiting cultural principles of interaction.

Ali Mumin Ahad
R2,294 Discovery Miles 22 940 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Somali Oral Poetry and the Failed She-Camel Nation State: A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Deelley Poetry Debate (1979-1980) examines the most expressive medium in Somali culture and politics, that is, oral poetry, in its ideological and discursive dimension. Oral poetry has a formidable impact on Somali society and its internal dynamics. Somali Oral Poetry is the first critical discourse analysis of the connection between oral poetry and politics in Somalia. The book brings out contradictions and conflicts between the ways of thinking of a society structured in clans and a rightful claim for nationhood and the state of law. In addition, it highlights the difficulty the society finds in renouncing clan mentality that requires loyalty to the clan rather than to the State. The present volume illuminates, through the critical analysis of the Deelley poetry debate, the circumstances and issues that preceded the civil war in Somalia. Therefore, the book is of particular interest for its original explanation and understanding of the extraordinary subsequent failure of the State in Somalia.

Lessons 6, 8, 9 and 10 introduce the learner to the lesson format, which remains consistent throughout the remaining books.

The comprehension, retention and production of idiomatic expressions is one of the most difficult areas of the lexicon for second language (L2) learners, even very advanced students, to master. This book investigates this under-researched and interesting aspect of language acquisition, shedding light on both conventional uses of idiomatic expressions as well as creative variant forms. The chapters in the book delve into different aspects of idiomatic mastery: students' comprehension of canonically used idioms in both their first and second language; the effects of multimedia and visualization techniques on learners' comprehension and retention of L2 idioms; students' misinterpretations of L2 idioms; L2 learners' comprehension of creative idiom variants and their use of idioms in free composition writing.
