This book explores the lived experience of cultural
entrepreneurship examining the challenges associated with cultural
labour including the insecurities of managing precarious working
conditions. Drawing on interviews conducted with cultural workers,
Cultural Entrepreneurship focuses on how individuals articulate
their experience of entrepreneurship in the cultural and creative
industries. Noting the importance of place, the local cultural
milieu is examined as a means of situating entrepreneurial
practices through cultural and enterprise policies, local networks,
and significant relationships. Within this framework, the cultural
entrepreneurs' stories reveal means of subverting or
re-interpreting identities and the possibility for 'rethinking
cultural entrepreneurship.' Aimed at researchers, academics and
students investigating cultural entrepreneurship, cultural policy
and cultural labour, Cultural Entrepreneurship will additionally be
of value to creative industry consultants, cultural policymakers,
and those setting up creative enterprises. Researchers from fields
such as geography, investigating different aspects of the cultural
industries in relation to cultural policy and place, will also find
this book to be a useful contribution.

Investigating how people and places are connected into the creative
economy, this volume takes a holistic view of the intersections
between community, policy and practice and how they are
co-constituted. The role of the creative economy and broader
cultural policy within community development is problematised and,
in a significant addition to work in this area, the concept of
'place' forms a key cross cutting theme. It brings together case
studies from the European Union across urban, rural and coastal
areas, along with examples from the developing world, to explore
tensions in universal and regionally-specific issues.
Empirically-based and theoretically-informed, this collection is of
particular interest to academics, postgraduates, policy makers and
practitioners within geography, urban and regional studies,
cultural policy and the cultural/creative industries.

While the questions of ethics have become increasingly important in
recent years for many fields within the humanities, there has been
no single volume that seeks to address the emergence of this
concern with ethics across the disciplinary spectrum. Given this
lack in currently available critical and secondary texts, and also
the urgency of the issues addressed by the critics assembled here,
the time is right for a collection of this nature.
This book brings together many new and exciting international
approaches to sport heritage. It provides a thought-provoking sport
heritage case study that would be of interest to students and
researchers in history, geography, anthropology, marketing, and
industry practitioners at sporting events.
The book highlights 'new perspectives' on volunteerism in sport,
covering frameworks, methods, context and variables on several
levels from community sport clubs to international events. In
analysing the processes of control within voluntary sport clubs, a
new theoretical framework - critical realism (CR) - challenges how
we think about theory and how scientific inquiry should proceed.
Further themes raised are: Should sports clubs be viewed as a
crossing between a traditional volunteer culture dominated by
collective solidarity, and a modern volunteer culture focused on
the individual benefits? Are former athletes a new group of
possible volunteers? Can personal narratives of experiences of
being a volunteer in a big international event provide us with new
insight that has not previously been considered? Identity is
suggested as a motive for understanding volunteers at sporting
events. Two new theoretical models are presented, one on the
development of volunteer commitment and the other on a framework
that incorporates both individual- and institutional-level
variables. All chapters have recommendations for future research.
The testing of these theories and influencing factors will provide
new directions in the research of sport volunteerism. This book was
originally published as a special issue of European Sport
Management Quarterly.
This examination of changes taking place in the world of football
focuses on its growing commercialization. It covers such topics as

This new ground-breaking analysis explores the social history and politics of 'mega-events' from the late 19th century to the present. Through case studies of mega-events such as the 1851 Crystal Palace Expo, the 1936 Berlin Olympics and the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Maurice Roche investigates the impact Expos and Olympics have had on national identities, on the marking of public time and space, and on visions of national citizenship and international society in modern times. Historical chapters deal with the production of Expos by power elites, their impacts on mass culture, and the political uses and abuses of international sport and Olympic events. Chapters also deal with the impact of Olympics on cities, the growth of Olympics as 'media events' and the current crisis of the Olympic movement in world politics and culture.
This book is unique in that it offers the first truly rigorous application of economic principles to its subject. The authors analyse: * the economic literature on sporting leagues * the demand for professional team sports * the players' labour market. Amongst the topics discussed are the US system of franchising and draft picks and the chances of their being adopted elsewhere, the implications of player strikes, the onset of pay-per-view and digital television, and the relatively new notion that sport is a business like any other.

The Economics of Sport and Recreation provides a much needed and up-to-date analysis of sport's contribution to the global economy. This new edition covers all aspects of the economics of sport and recreation but gives prominence to the staggering rise of the commercial sector over the last decade. Special attention is paid to the economics of the sports goods industry, the economics of sports sponsorship, the economics of major sports events, the economics of professional team sports, and the economic relationship between sport and broadcasting. In the first edition of this book published in 1985, the emphasis was on the government and voluntary sectors as the lead sectors in the sports market. As we enter the next millennium, it is the commercial sector that is the lead sector in the sports market and this is reflected in the content and structure of the new book. Aimed specifically at students engaged in the study of sport and its interaction with the economy, this book will be an invaluable resource. eBook available with sample pages: 020347483X
Including an array of distinguished contributors, this novel book
fills a gap in the literature by addressing an important yet under
researched issue in the field of sports economics. It places great
emphasis on the notion that sport is a significant component for
improving the happiness, health and well-being of citizens,
communities and society as a whole. In so doing, it addresses
whether, in an environment of increasing pressure on public
spending, governments should continue to subsidise sporting
activities at the expense of other public resources. Written in a
clear and accessible style, this pioneering book explores a number
of specific issues including: -the relationship between sport and
happiness -the effect of sport on health, including the capacity of
sport and exercise to reduce spending on medical expenses -the
relationship between sport and productivity -whether sport as a
leisure activity can improve quality of life. Innovative and
original, this volume will strongly appeal to students and
researchers of sport, health and welfare economics. Contributors
include: C. Breuer, C. Cabane, M. Davis, P. Downward, C. End, D.
Forrest, J. Garcia Villar, H. Huang, B. Humphreys, G. Kavetsos, M.
Lechner, J. Leyva, I. McHale, S. Oreffice, T. Pawlowski, J. Price,

Volunteers make important contributions across the spectrum of
event settings, most visibly at high profile mega events such as
the Olympic Games they are volunteers are lauded as 'Games makers',
'unsung heroes' and the like. Less visibly volunteers are the heart
and soul of community events and festivals, often undertaking
multi-faceted roles from event leadership through to operations and
ensuring that these celebrations are made possible in the absence
of big budgets and professional event staff. This book is the first
to showcase and advance international research into the
volunteering experience at events, drawing on the work of key
scholars in this field. Events of all sizes benefit from volunteer
support but event volunteering research is frequently case
study-based and individually these cases make a limited impact.
This text brings together cases from around the world, specifically
including those that expand theoretical and methodological
boundaries. It features mega events like the 2012 Olympics and the
2011 Rugby World Cup, alongside music festivals and sports events.
New areas that are examined include the benefits of event
volunteering for students, the role of volunteers in social
enterprise events and new methodological approaches to researching
this phenomenon, specifically ethnographic and cross-national
studies. This innovative book acts as a global source of key
information for practitioners and researchers, an important text
for students of event management and will provide stimulus for
further work in this emerging area.
