“Sometime in November 2007 while working as an entertainment and lifestyle journalist, a job that had seen me party and hang out with local and international stars, including John Legend, I realised that I was over my life in South Africa. My job was fab and my life should have been great but it wasn’t because who cares if you get to pose with Beyoncť? I had had enough of writing about people living their wildest dreams. It was time to see what the story of my life would be. I had always had wanderlust, especially for Africa. And so I made the decision to leave South Africa, an urgent need that consumed me and almost drove me to a point of insanity. I planned to spend three months in Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo and Benin.”
When Lerato Mogoathle left South Africa for a planned three-month break to West Africa little did she know that those three months would turn into five years.
Vagabond is her hilarious and honest account of her five years of living as a drifter in Africa. In between the borders, foreign architecture and interesting new ways of life, Mogoatlhe found passion, love, laughter and heartbreak. On these pages you will find capsules of time spent in 21 countries in five regions of Africa. You will be regaled by the tales of how she tries to worm herself into hotels when she has no money because of unpaid invoices back home. You will be mortified and proud of how she navigates herself out of difficult situations like being misread by a man who tries to force himself on her.
Mogoatlhe’s book is a travel memoir driven by the belief that whatever else Africa is, it is first and foremost a home. It is punctuated with a deep urge to know the continent differently.
Most people think of Antarctica as a white smudge at the bottom of the world map. Yet it’s a landmass almost half the size of Africa with weather and ocean currents that dominate the planet.
In Blue Ice, award-winning travel writer Don Pinnock journeys to the seventh continent – the last to be discovered. He explores what drew Cook, Bellingshousen, Shackleton, Scott and other adventurers and naturalists to this vast terrain
With sensitive descriptions and startling photography, he travels to the heart of Antarctica’s wilderness and explores the intimate relationship between Cape Town and the frozen south.
This is an extravagant travelogue, which paints a vivid portrait of one of the most remote and unforgiving places on earth. It reveals the extremes of adventure, courage and unspoilt beauty with precision, humour and a sense of wonder.

"I have this one term for the kind of woman my mother raised me not to be, and I call it a 'Do-Nothing B-tch'. It's the kind of chick that just tries to be pretty and be taken care of by somebody else. That's why I think it's hilarious when people say that my body looks masculine or something. Just because my body was developed for a purpose other than f-cking millionaires, doesn't mean it's masculine. I think it's femininely badass as f-ck because there isn't a single muscle on my body that doesn't have a purpose because I'm not a 'Do-Nothing B-tch'!."
When Ronda Rousey made this speech she inspired women everywhere. Beyonce even played a recording on-stage and it went viral. But Rousey has been inspiring others her whole career. The journey to the top for the most dominant mixed-martial-arts fighter in history has been filled with challenges. From a childhood marked by speech problems to the painful loss of her father, she grew up repeatedly pushing her mind and body to the limit in order to win. She battled prejudice to become the first female fighter in UFC. Now she is the biggest name in the sport, breaking attendance levels and re-writing the history books with her astonishing knockout victories, most in under a minute. She has also forged a successful Hollywood career as an actor. In this honest and inspiring book, Rousey relives her greatest fights and shares her secrets for success and mental toughness. She reveals how we can all be at our best, even on our worst days, and how we can turn our limitations into opportunities.
It will leave you ready to face your own challenges in life, whatever they may be.
One of South Africa’s most accomplished travel writers takes you on a series of journeys through Africa – following the footsteps of David Livingstone, wandering the back streets of old Stone Town in Zanzibar, crossing the central Sahara, puzzling over the rock-hewn churches of Ethiopia.
He hikes over lost mountains, motorcycles along the 29th parallel, canoes clear across the Okavango Delta and explores the secrets of Knysna Forest.
His descriptions show a sharp eye for detail, a fascinating knowledge of the continent’s history and, above all, a deep love of the warm people and strange creatures of Africa.
The Springbok rugby captain, over more than a century, has represented many things to many South Africans. He has united, and he has divided. He has thrilled, he has disappointed. He has inspired, he has disheartened. He has triumphed, he has failed. But he has always had an impact.
In this revealing narrative, Edward Griffiths and Stephen Nell depict the men who have been able to call themselves ‘Springbok Captain’ through their backgrounds, triumphs and disappointments. Relive the heyday of rugby legends Bennie Osler, Danie Craven, Hennie Muller, Johan Claassen, Naas Botha, Francois Pienaar, Gary Teichmann, Joost van der Westhuizen, Andre Vos and others.
Now fully updated with the accounts of Bobby Skinstad, Victor Matfield and Jean de Villiers, The Springbok Captains is the epic story that lies at the heart of South African rugby.
In 1902 Harry Wolhuter was one of the first game rangers in the Sabi Nature Reserve, which would eventually, along with the Shingwedzi Nature Reserve, become the Kruger National Park. Originally a hunter, Wolhuter made the protection of the Kruger’s wildlife his life’s work.
Memories Of A Game Ranger tells of his days in the bush, when rangers went on horseback and lions considered them fair game – like the infamous time Harry was ambushed by two lions and managed to kill one of them while it was dragging him off into the grass.
There was very little in the way of danger Harry didn’t have to cope with – from crocodiles in swimming pools to irate hippos at ranger posts – and that’s not even taking into account the poachers, the malaria or the little old ladies wanting protection from those fearsome giraffes.

This is a hilarious, eye-opening tour of the new romantic landscape, from one of America's sharpest comic voices and one of its leading sociologists.
In the old days, most people would find a decent person who lived in their village or neighbourhood, and after deciding they weren't a murderer, get married and have kids - all by the age of 22. Now we spend years of our lives searching for our perfect soul mate and, thanks to dating apps, mobile phones and social media, we have more romantic options than ever before in human history. Yet we also have to confront strange new dilemmas, such as what to think when someone is too busy to reply to a text but has time to post a photo of their breakfast on Instagram. And if we have so many more options, why aren't people any less frustrated? For years, American comedian Aziz Ansari has been aiming his comic insight at dating and relationships, and in Modern Romance, he teams up with award-winning sociologist Eric Klinenberg to investigate love in the age of technology. They enlisted some of the world's leading social scientists, conducted hundreds of interviews, analyzed the behavioural data, and researched dating cultures from Tokyo to Buenos Aires to New York City.
The result is an unforgettable picture of modern love, combining Ansari's irreverent humour with cutting-edge social science.

Fikile aims to break those boundaries created by the past regime and contribute to the unity that is needed for all South Africans to move forward and experience this country equally.
