Secondary Research Methods in the Built Environment (Paperback): Emmanuel Manu, Julius Akotia Secondary Research Methods in the Built Environment (Paperback)
Emmanuel Manu, Julius Akotia
R1,528 Discovery Miles 15 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The use of secondary data for research can offer benefits, particularly when limited resources are available for conducting research using primary methods. Researchers and students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including their academic instructors, are increasingly recognising the immense opportunities in applying secondary research methods in built environment research. Advances in technology has also led to vast amounts of existing datasets that can be utilized for secondary research. This textbook provides a systematic guide on how to apply secondary research methods in the built environment, including their various underpinning methodologies. It provides guidance on the secondary research process, benefits, and drawbacks of applying secondary research methods, how to source for secondary data, ethical considerations, and the various secondary research methods that can be applied in built environment research. The book incorporates chapters dealing with qualitative secondary analysis, systematic literature reviews, legal analysis, bibliometric and scientometric analysis, literature-based discovery, and meta-analysis. Secondary Research Methods in the Built Environment is an ideal research book for undergraduate and postgraduate students in construction management, construction project management, quantity surveying, construction law and dispute resolution, real estate and property management, building services engineering, architecture, and civil engineering.

Leadership in the Construction Industry - Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World (Paperback): George Ofori,... Leadership in the Construction Industry - Developing Authentic Leaders in a Dynamic World (Paperback)
George Ofori, Shamas-ur-Rehman Toor
R1,483 Discovery Miles 14 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents a new framework for leadership in the construction industry which draws from the authentic leadership construct. The framework has three major themes: self-leadership, self-transcendent leadership, and sustainable leadership. Despite its significance, leadership has not been given due importance in the construction industry as focus is placed on managerial functionalism. At the project level, even with the technological advances in the industry in recent years, construction is realized in the form of people undertaking distinct interdependent activities which require effective leadership. The industry faces many challenges including: demanding client requirements and project parameters; more stringent regulations, codes and systems; intense competition in the industry; and threats from disruptive enterprise. In such a complex environment, technology-driven and tool-based project and corporate management is insufficient. It must be complemented by a strategic, genuine, stakeholder-focused and ethical leadership. Leadership in the Construction Industry is based on a study on authentic leadership and its development in Singapore. Leadership theories and concepts are reviewed; the importance of leadership in the construction industry is discussed; and the grounded theory approach which was applied in the study is explained. Many eminent construction professionals in Singapore were interviewed in the field study. Emerging from the experiences of the leaders documented in this book are three major themes: (1) self-leadership: how leaders engage in various self-related processes such as self-awareness, self-regulation, and role modeling. (2) self-transcendent leadership: how leaders go beyond leading themselves to leading others through servant leadership, shared leadership, spiritual leadership, and socially-responsible leadership; and, finally, (3) sustainable leadership or the strategies leaders employ to make the impact of their leadership lasting. A synthesis of these themes and their implications for leadership development is presented before the book concludes with some recommendations for current and aspiring leaders about how they can engage with them. This book is essential reading for all construction practitioners from all backgrounds; and researchers on leadership and management in construction.

Connexions - The Unseen Hand of Tony Hunt (Paperback, New): Nigel Dale Connexions - The Unseen Hand of Tony Hunt (Paperback, New)
Nigel Dale
R1,169 Discovery Miles 11 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'...His ambition and desire to experiment are without parallel in the last 40 years of structural engineering...Within the pages of this book you'll find yourself enthralled by the effectiveness and originality of his work. Time and again he has brought structures of astounding ingenuity to life. Structural engineers that dream on the scale of Tony Hunt are few and far between'. Extract from Foreword by Sir James Dyson Tony Hunt spent the six decades of his professional and personal life interacting with the elite in the fields of engineering, architecture and industrial design - this is his story. His life and career are described, showing how he formed lasting relationships with architects, patrons, artists, photographers, industrial designers, writers, critics and with his own staff. Connexions demonstrates the way in which he was able to adapt his engineering solutions in collaboration with architects in the formative stages of the design process to find structural solutions sympathetic to their architectural aspirations. It examines the quest for technological advance and Hunt's passion for industrial and product design which led him to favour an industrialized component-based approach to engineering in architecture. He showed an unerring ability to identify and express key components within a design, concentrating on the way they connected together, and demonstrated a practical knowledge and experience of the technology required for their manufacture. The results of Hunt's contribution, and the many prestigious commissions he received, when working with the generation of acclaimed architects emerging from the Architectural Association, the Royal College of Art and from Yale University scholarships in the early period of his career, are well-documented and publicised. Direct comparisons with the great European and American architect engineers such as Richard Buckminster Fuller, Charles Eames, Fritz Haller and Jean Prouve are justifiably made. Connexions also concentrates on the personal and professional relationships that Hunt formed during his career and, by reference to past and contemporary architects, engineers, industrial designers, artists, etc., the place that Tony Hunt occupies in the history of UK design.

Durability of Concrete Structures - Investigation, repair, protection (Hardcover): G.C. Mays Durability of Concrete Structures - Investigation, repair, protection (Hardcover)
G.C. Mays
R7,592 Discovery Miles 75 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the rapid expansion of the construction industry during the 1960s basic advice regarding cover to reinforcement and impermeability of concrete to moisture for subsequent durability often went unheeded. Today the UK is seeing the result and similar effects are being observed worldwide. The book draws together experts from the fields of concrete durability, repair and protection to provide a state-of-the-art review on current thinking, materials and techniques. The basic deterioration mechanisms and methods for the site investigation of distressed concrete structures are initially considered. Materials and techniques for repair are critically reviewed and relatively novel ideas for protection are discussed. The second part of the book is presented as a series of case studies for various structure types. They are written by those who have immediate experience of both the technical and financial difficulties of concrete repair and maintenance programmes. This book should be of interest to civil and structural engineers in consulting engineering firms, contractors and local authorities, repair materials suppliers and technologists, building surveyors and architects, lecturers and stu

Steel Structures - Analysis and Design for Vibrations and Earthquakes (Paperback): Karuna Moy Ghosh Steel Structures - Analysis and Design for Vibrations and Earthquakes (Paperback)
Karuna Moy Ghosh
R1,154 Discovery Miles 11 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Steel Structures: Analysis and Design for Vibrations and Earthquakes analyses the behaviour of two steel framed structures and their structural elements subjected to complex dynamic forces under the actions of earthquake motions and vibrations due to dynamic forces created by the effects of an unbalanced rotating mass of machines. Both the complete structures and the structural elements are analysed in compliance with Eurocode 8 and Eurocode 3.

There are books available that consider the design of structural members and deal with isolated problems but in the main these emphasize the theory and do not consider the practical design and detailing which engineers face in the design office and within construction. This book considers the structure in its entirety providing a complete picture, guiding the engineer through the full process.

The general principles and practices, design concepts, evaluation of seismic design parameters, calculations of design base shear force in elastic analysis, and vibration analysis are all considered before presentation of the calculations. The author takes the reader through the process in a simple and lucid way with a step-by-step approach stating the design philosophy, design considerations and clarifying the referred clauses of the code of practice, all complemented by design sketches and tables.
