Tunnelling - Management by Design (Paperback): Alan Muir Wood Tunnelling - Management by Design (Paperback)
Alan Muir Wood
R1,591 Discovery Miles 15 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tunnelling has become a fragmented process, excessively influenced by lawyers'notions of confrontational contractual bases. This prevents the pooling of skills, essential to the achievement of the promoters' objectives. Tunnelling: Management by Design seeks the reversal of this trend. After a brief historical treatment of selected developments, the concept of design is defined in detail and related to systems and to risk, the central features of this book. A final chapter discusses the failure in 1994 of railway tunnels at Heathrow Airport which well illustrates the expensive results of disregard for several of the criteria for success. The book covers all the main aspects of tunnelling: planning studies which contribute to the viability of a tunnel project the technical aspects of design * the management of construction overall project management a review of recent tunnel failures issues regarding dispute resolution and prevention This book is an essential handbook for professional engineers engaged in all aspects of tunnelling and geotechnically-based construction, including those in public authorities, private consultants and contractors, plant manufacturers, and designers of specialist geoprocessors. It will also appeal to project managers, lawyers involved in contractual issues, and civil engineers from post-docs to professors and researchers in geotechnics and structures, in engineering management, health and safety, construction law and risk assessment.

Trends in Structural Mechanics - Theory, Practice, Education (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): J. Roorda, N.K. Srivastava Trends in Structural Mechanics - Theory, Practice, Education (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
J. Roorda, N.K. Srivastava
R5,358 Discovery Miles 53 580 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The desire to understand the mechanics of elastic and plastic solids, new materials and the stability, reliability and dynamic behaviour of structures and their components under extreme environmental conditions has dominated research in structural engineering for many decades. Advances in these areas have revolutionized design methods, codes of practice, and the teaching of structural engineers. In this volume an international body of leading authorities presents some forty papers on current research directions in the specific areas of solid mechanics, structural computation, modern materials and their application, buckling and instability, design of structural systems and components, reliability, seismic analysis, and engineering education. They were presented at a symposium held July 10-12, 1994, at the University of Waterloo, Canada, to honour Professor Archibald Norbert Sherbourne who recently retired from a long and active career of teaching, research and academic administration at this University. The themes of the work contained within this volume reflect Professor Sherbourne's own research interests and will be of interest to both academics and practicing structural engineers.

Guenter A. Rombach
R3,636 Discovery Miles 36 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Numerical calculations based on the finite element design method have become a standard tool for the design of many structures. In this book, the author highlights that complex numerical calculations should not be used to compensate for any lack of practical knowledge of the behaviour of a structure. This new edition up to date with the increasingly complex finite element models and nonlinear material analysis being used in the field. The book focuses on and references Eurocode 2 throughout.

Modeling and Computing for Geotechnical Engineering - An Introduction (Paperback): M.S. Rahman, M.B. Can Ulker Modeling and Computing for Geotechnical Engineering - An Introduction (Paperback)
M.S. Rahman, M.B. Can Ulker
R1,588 Discovery Miles 15 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modeling and computing is becoming an essential part of the analysis and design of an engineered system. This is also true of "geotechnical systems", such as soil foundations, earth dams and other soil-structure systems. The general goal of modeling and computing is to predict and understand the behaviour of the system subjected to a variety of possible conditions/scenarios (with respect to both external stimuli and system parameters), which provides the basis for a rational design of the system. The essence of this is to predict the response of the system to a set of external forces. The modelling and computing essentially involve the following three phases: (a) Idealization of the actual physical problem, (b) Formulation of a mathematical model represented by a set of equations governing the response of the system, and (c) Solution of the governing equations (often requiring numerical methods) and graphical representation of the numerical results. This book will introduce these phases. MATLAB (R) codes and MAPLE (R) worksheets are available for those who have bought the book. Please contact the author at [email protected] or [email protected]. Kindly provide the invoice number and date of purchase.

Shallow Foundations and Soil Constitutive Laws (Paperback): Swami Saran Shallow Foundations and Soil Constitutive Laws (Paperback)
Swami Saran
R1,553 Discovery Miles 15 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book offers a systematic analysis of footings (i.e. shallow foundations) in a realistic way, using constitutive relationships of the soil. The aim of the book is to deal with the theme holistically, involving the determination of the constitutive law of the soil, and then proportioning the footing occurring in different situations in actual practice. The book has eleven chapters. After giving an introduction and scope of the book in the first chapter, second and third chapters are respectively devoted to constitutive laws of soil and basic stress equations. In the third chapter analysis of strip footings subjected to central vertical load has been dealt. This analysis has been extended for eccentric -inclined load in the fifth chapter. Since problems of shallow foundations resting adjacent to a slope are of prime importance, this aspect has been dealt in sixth chapter. In the seventh chapter, analysis pertaining to square and rectangular footings have been presented. Effect of interference between adjacent footing is covered in chapter eight. Since ring footings are usually provided for tanks, silos, towers etc., ninth chapter is devoted to this. Added attraction of the book is its chapter ten in which footings located in seismic regions have been covered. Effect of embedment below the ground surface on the behavior of footings located both in non-seismic and seismic regions has been dealt in the chapter eleven. The book is intended for senior undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. students of civil engineering, research scholars, practicing engineers, teachers and academicians. The analyses are based on the latest information available. A number of illustrated examples have been included in the text. SI units have been used in the book.

Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations (Hardcover): B. Hertlein Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations (Hardcover)
B. Hertlein
R2,316 Discovery Miles 23 160 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nondestructive Testing involves the use of methods such as wave propagation, electromagnetism, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity to test structural integrity and thereby allow nondestructive assessment of structures and the possibility of structural failures before they occur.

"Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations" covers different techniques designed to provide information about the integrity and quality of the material that makes up a deep foundation.

Nondestructive Testing methods are used at all stages of a structure's life - from new construction quality control to residual lifetime prediction, and even during the monitoring of demolition. In addition, Nondestructive Testing is being increasingly specified in deep foundation projects, though often without a good understanding of its limitations and with the result that methods are often misused. In order to be able to specify an appropriate method, or to recognize an inappropriate specification, it is necessary for the engineer, specifier and/or contractor to understand the capabilities and limitations of each of the methods currently in use.

"Nondestructive Testing of Deep Foundations"" "Describes the most commonly used deep foundation construction techniques, including typical use of materialProvides a brief history of the development of commercially available nondestructive methodsSummarises each method's capabilities and limitationsActs as a one stop reference drawing together resources only previously available in conference proceedings and journal papers

This manual will prove to be a welcome addition to the bookshelf of all practitioners in civil/structural and geotechnical engineering and architecture. It will also provide a valuable insight into this highly technical field for university researchers, lecturers and postgraduate students in civil/structural and geotechnical engineering.

Geosynthetic Encased Columns for Soft Soil Improvement (Paperback): Dimiter Alexiew, Marcio Almeida, Mario Riccio, Iman... Geosynthetic Encased Columns for Soft Soil Improvement (Paperback)
Dimiter Alexiew, Marcio Almeida, Mario Riccio, Iman Hosseinpour
R1,570 Discovery Miles 15 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The geosynthetic encased column (GEC) is a relatively recent method developed for soft soil improvement. The method was firstly introduced as a concept in the 1980s and first practical applications started in the 1990s. GECs have been widely used in some parts of the world for the last three decades. However, there is no book in the literature summarizing the knowledge accumulated during this period in relation to this soft ground improvement technique. The purpose of this book is to provide readers with the GEC fundamentals and practical applications. Chapter 1 presents the general principles of this ground improvement technique including the methods used for GEC installation and how the material properties may be selected. Chapter 2 presents the design methods, thus settlement calculations by means of analytical methods and stability calculations by limit equilibrium methods are explained in detail. Chapter 3 presents calculation examples illustrating the usual steps to be done for both service limit state and ultimate limit state designs. Then field performances exemplifying practical applications of the GEC technique are presented in Chapter 4 for some case histories. Following numerical analyses, often used in design to complement analytical methods, are presented in Chapter 5. Annexes I and II at the end contain the charts developed to perform settlement calculations. The book combines the experiences of four authors with different academic and industry backgrounds to describe GEC design and performance. It is aimed at civil engineers in general, particularly geotechnical engineers, either working in design or in practice, at graduate students, and at senior undergraduate students.

Modelling with Transparent Soils - Visualizing Soil Structure Interaction and Multi Phase Flow, Non-Intrusively (Hardcover,... Modelling with Transparent Soils - Visualizing Soil Structure Interaction and Multi Phase Flow, Non-Intrusively (Hardcover, Edition.)
Magued Iskander
R4,066 Discovery Miles 40 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The fundamental premise of this monograph is that transparent synthetic materials with geotechnical properties similar to those of natural soils can be used to study 3D deformation and flow problems in natural soils. Transparent soils can be made by matching the refractive index of synthetic soil materials and the pore fluid. This monographs presents the geotechnical behaviour of several families of transparent soils that can be combined to meet model-test requirements, in terms of strength, deformation, or permeability.

"Modelling with Transparent Soils" demonstrates how an optical system consisting of a laser light, a CCD camera, a frame grabber, and a PC can be used to measure spatial deformations in transparent soil models non-intrusively. Transparent soil models are sliced optically using a laser light sheet. A distinctive speckle pattern is generated by the interaction of the laser light and transparent soil. A 2D deformation field is obtained from two speckle images by using an image processing technique named adaptive cross-correlation, which is an advanced form of the digital image cross-correlation (DIC) algorithm that utilizes both window sizing and window shifting methods. The monograph demonstrates that comparison of 2D deformation fields between transparent soil and natural soil showed that the results were comparable in almost every aspect. Three dimensional fields can be produced by combining multiple 2D fields in Matlab.

Multiphase flow and surfactant flushing tests were also simulated using a layered transparent soil systems and several contaminants. The developed technology allows for visualizing the contamination concentration and evaluating the performance of remediation technologies in bench scale model tests.
