Structural Design via Optimality Criteria - The Prager Approach to Structural Optimization (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): George I.N.... Structural Design via Optimality Criteria - The Prager Approach to Structural Optimization (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
George I.N. Rozvany
R5,249 Discovery Miles 52 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"During the last two decades, research on structural optimization became increasingly concerned with two aspects: the application of general numeri- cal methods of optimization to structural design of complex real structures, and the analytical derivation of necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimality of broad classes of comparatively simple and more or less ideal- ized structures. Both kinds of research are important: the first for obvious reasons; the second, because it furnishes information that is useful in testing the validity, accuracy and convergence of numerical methods and in assess- ing the efficiency of practical designs. " (Prager and Rozvany, 1977a) The unexpected death of William Prager in March 1980 marked, in a sense, the end of an era in structural mechanics, but his legacy of ideas will re- main a source of inspiration for generations of researchers to come. Since his nominal retirement in the early seventies, Professor and Mrs. Prager lived in Savognin, an isolated alpine village and ski resort surrounded by some of Switzerland's highest mountains. It was there that the author's close as- sociation with Prager developed through annual pilgrimages from Australia and lengthy discussions which pivoted on Prager's favourite topic of struc- tural optimization. These exchanges took place in the picturesque setting of Graubunden, on the terrace of an alpine restaurant overlooking snow-capped peaks, on ski-lifts or mountain walks, or during evening meals in the cosy hotels of Savognin, Parsonz and Riom.

Applied Soil Mechanics With ABAQUS Applications (Hardcover): S Helwany Applied Soil Mechanics With ABAQUS Applications (Hardcover)
S Helwany
R3,828 Discovery Miles 38 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A simplified approach to applying the Finite Element Method to geotechnical problems

Predicting soil behavior by constitutive equations that are based on experimental findings and embodied in numerical methods, such as the finite element method, is a significant aspect of soil mechanics. Engineers are able to solve a wide range of geotechnical engineering problems, especially inherently complex ones that resist traditional analysis. "Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS(R) Applications" provides civil engineering students and practitioners with a simple, basic introduction to applying the finite element method to soil mechanics problems.

Accessible to someone with little background in soil mechanics and finite element analysis, "Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS(R) Applications" explains the basic concepts of soil mechanics and then prepares the reader for solving geotechnical engineering problems using both traditional engineering solutions and the more versatile, finite element solutions. Topics covered include: Properties of Soil Elasticity and Plasticity Stresses in Soil Consolidation Shear Strength of Soil Shallow Foundations Lateral Earth Pressure and Retaining Walls Piles and Pile Groups Seepage

Taking a unique approach, the author describes the general soil mechanics for each topic, shows traditional applications of these principles with longhand solutions, and then presents finite element solutions for the same applications, comparing both. The book is prepared with ABAQUS(R) software applications to enable a range of readers to experiment firsthand with the principles described in the book (the software application files are available under "student resources" at www.wiley.com/college/helwany). By presenting both the traditional solutions alongside the FEM solutions, "Applied Soil Mechanics with ABAQUS(R) Applications" is an ideal introduction to traditional soil mechanics and a guide to alternative solutions and emergent methods.

Dr. Helwany also has an online course based on the book available at www.geomilwaukee.com.

Dynamics of Rail Transit Tunnel Systems (Paperback): Shunhua Zhou Dynamics of Rail Transit Tunnel Systems (Paperback)
Shunhua Zhou
R3,590 Discovery Miles 35 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dynamics of Rail Transit Tunnel Systems develops the dynamic theory of a rail transit tunnel system and provides research methods for the evaluation of long-term settlement of rail transit tunnels in soft soil, the service performance of tunnel structures, and the characterization of environmental vibration induced by trains. In recent years, a large number of rail transit tunnels have been constructed and put into operation, particularly in China. To evaluate the time-dependent degradation of tunnel structures and train-induced environmental vibration, a reliable model must be established to determine the dynamic response of a vehicle-track-tunnel-soil system, hence the introduction of this timely resource.

Kiyohiro Ikeda, Kazuo Murota
R5,915 Discovery Miles 59 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bifurcation and Buckling in Structures describes the theory and analysis of bifurcation and buckling in structures. Emphasis is placed on a general procedure for solving nonlinear governing equations and an analysis procedure related to the finite-element method. Simple structural examples using trusses, columns, and frames illustrate the principles. Part I presents fundamental issues such as the general mathematical framework for bifurcation and buckling, procedures for the buckling load/mode analyses, and numerical analysis procedures to trace the solution curves and switch to bifurcation solutions. Advanced topics include asymptotic theory of bifurcation and bifurcation theory of symmetric systems. Part II deals with buckling of perfect and imperfect structures. An overview of the member buckling of columns and beams is provided, followed by the buckling analysis of truss and frame structures. The worst and random imperfections are studied as advanced topics. An extensive review of the history of buckling is presented. This text is ideal for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and applied mathematics. To assist readers, problems are listed at the end of each chapter, and their answers are given at the end of the book. Kiyohiro Ikeda is Professor Emeritus at Tohoku University, Japan. Kazuo Murota is a Project Professor at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Japan, as well as Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan.

Alberto Castigliano; Translated by Ewart S. Andrews
R1,272 Discovery Miles 12 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many of the modern methods of structural analysis based on concepts of virtual work and energy were developed and popularised in Italy in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Building on the work of Luigi Menabrea, the mathematician Carlo Alberto Castigliano (1847-84) provided the first full proof of these methods in his 1873 dissertation while based in Turin. Equally important was his popularisation of the theory in his Theorie de l'equilibre des systemes elastiques et ses applications (1879), in which he applied his theory to a wide range of important real-world cases. The work is here reissued in its 1919 English translation, by the consulting engineer and lecturer Ewart S. Andrews. Castigliano covers the basic theory of elastic stresses, introducing useful approximations; he then moves on to the analysis of real structures, including roof trusses, arches and bridges in both iron and masonry.

Long-Throated Flumes and Broad-Crested Weirs (Hardcover, 1985 ed.): M.G. Bos Long-Throated Flumes and Broad-Crested Weirs (Hardcover, 1985 ed.)
M.G. Bos
R2,734 Discovery Miles 27 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the context of water management, structures that measure the flow rate in open channels are used for a variety of purposes: (i) In hydrology, they measure the discharge from catchments; (ii) In irrigation, they measure and control the distribution of water at canal bifurcations and at off-take structures; (iii) In sanitary engineering, they measure the flow from urban areas and industries into the drainage system; (iv) In both irrigation and drainage, they can control the upstream water at a desired level. This thesis represents an attempt to place such flow measurements on a solid foundation by explaining the theory of water flow through 'long-throated flumes' and their hydraulically related 'broad-crested weirs'. On the basis of this theory, and on practical experience, these structures are recommended for use whenever the water surface in the channel at the measuring site can remain free. The thesis concludes with a design procedure that will facilitate the application of these structures. The idea to undertake research on discharge measurement structures was born upon my appointment as the first civil engineer with the International Institute for Land Reclamation and Improvement (ILRI). Because my recruiter, Ir. J.M. van Staveren, then Director of ILRI, had left the Institute before my arrival, and because I was the 'first of my kind' in an agricultural environment, I looked for contact and found - vii- support from: the late Prof. Ir. J. Nugteren, Prof. Ir.
